Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is quite the infamous virus, which rose to notoriety in the 1980s once it was discovered to be the cause of AIDS, a terrible disorder of the immune system. HIV is a retrovirus, so what does that mean, and how does that make the virus special? What does it do, and precisely how does it cause AIDS? This is good information for anyone to know, so let's get a closer look now.

I'm so proud of some college students here in my hometown. They started educating people on HIV/AIDS and those infected students went against all their fears of stigma, tabboo or rejection and revealed that they were positively infected and undergoing ART. This was followed by more people both adult and young ones openly coming out to encourage other infected who live in the dark corners of their personal space to be brave and live the live they deserve, in a society that understands the disease rather than hate the victim. There will always be a few people who cannot accept facts and continue to hate victims until they themselves or their loved ones catch the virus.
People deserve to live in society that stands for each other rather than discriminate or ill-treat others based on their appearance or misfortune because not every AIDS patient is a whore, an addict or a sex maniac. There are people who got it while helping someone in need too. We must learn to see them.for what they really are, as humans, fellow humans and.love them because they need it most.

I know someone that got it by helping someone. He had only been with 2 women his entire life (his first and then second wife) and his second wife was a virgin when they got married. He helped someone who had broken their window trying to get into their car one day. Soon after that incident, they found out they were expecting their second child, and that they had HIV.

yes, because none of us our perfect and we all take turns being victimized by circumstance. interestingly, one of my favorite authors, Isaac Asimov, caught HIV from tainted blood used in a blood transfusion during heart surgery. poor Isaac wasn't one who exercised very much and this meant that he had a weak immune system, so the HIV quickly took over and killed him. now blood is screened more carefully for viruses. Now thanks to Dr. David Ho who developed special drugs, HIV is manageable and can be reduced to very low levels

There are some people who are ‘elite controllers’ but they’re few and far between, and much is known about why they are able to control the virus without ART. Also, questions still remain about the underlying longer term effects of not using ART in these individuals. Still lots to do

Too much profit being made from selling ART. 2 people have been cured while undergoing treatment for leukaemia by rebuilding the immune system with cells that lack the ccr5 receptor (one that the virus binds to). Ironically this was tried by a doctor who knew about hiv, but not a specialist.
The fact that successful treatment brings the virus levels to under 50 copies per 100ml, which is termed undetectable, means it can't be passed on (ref the Swiss Partner Study) by sexual intercourse makes lifelong treatment an option and can be argued that this in itself is a way of combating the disease. However, because of the profits made by big pharma, there is no motivation to pursue an actual cure even though it is possible. And that, in my opinion, is evil. The current way leaves populations very open to manipulation.
