Great video John. I have been watching your videos for months, all of them have valuable insight. I was just approved by H.A.D.R. (Houston area doberman rescue) to adopt a doberman. After watching your videos I feel sooo much more prepared for the fun times and challenging times that are in store for me. Thank you for the imformative material you provide. 🙏🤝
I followed all his videos, its pure super duper advice you can get. Subscribe and you will watch videos for every stage of your pup's upbringing. All the very best
My three year old dobie rescue was not crate trained when I got him. Now he automatically goes into his crate when he senses I'm about to leave for work! There are a few other actions that he will do without me directing him, just because he's used to doing it over and over. I love it because it feels like we both have a strong connection with each other.
@@Prep4lifeiskey Oh really, yes I plan to gey him potty trained outside as soon as possible. My 1st ever dog so any more tips will be much appreciated :)
This plays in perfectly with that! Thanks so much for mentioning it - psychology and understanding how the human mind and dog mind work are huge components of training!
Nice video John! Super helpful with me and my Dobie Karma. She’s only 15 monthes but every single time we get inside from a walk she goes instantly wild 🤣I’m gunna use this technique to correct this behaviour. Thanks so much. Also, can we talk about how handsome your son is ! 🥺❤️
Haha thanks so much! :) Your Dobie, Karma, seems like the typical 15 month old! So glad you were able to get some useful nuggets of information to use from this video, too, Lexi!
I've always had pitfalls. Love them. Then a friend gave me a half rott half dobie. GAME CHANGER. Her brother Gary is the laid back rott half. Mindy is textbook doberman. What an amazing breed.
My 10 month old female actually snapped the black chain collar, she was lunging a bit at a car that was passing and went to correct her and thing snapped, at the furthest point from my house on our walk. This was at 6am and pitch black and my girl is already 85lbs and very strong. I literally froze for a second and she did also, she actually sat down and awaited instruction in stead of bolting or straying, and this was during the end of her heat. Anyway just in case another car came or dog, i ended up trying the collar around her neck and made it home with actual less pulling than the chain. I was impressed how she sat and waited for me to do something, like she knew something was wrong. I usually bring a back up collar but did not have one with me on that day. I do think I would have been able to keep her beside me without the leash tied as i've trained her in the back yard to stay with me, and the repetition of doing that on our walks since she was 10 weeks old would have helped for sure. I just didn't want to take the chance if we saw a dog or another car since those are trigger points for her (where she loses focus) and didn't want to give one of old ladies I see inn the mornings sometime a heart attack if she went running at their dogs.
That's great that she looked to you for advice on what to do! You were both probably thinking "Uh oh...what now?!" Sounds like you handled the situation like a pro!
Thx for the videos I am getting an Isabella cream Doberman this weekend and I am researching so I know what to expect and your videos have been so helpful thank you so much
I've been missing your videos!!! gotta play catch on your videos for the last 2 months.. looking forward to watching them... prepare for a bunch of comments as i catch up!!! btw this was a great video...love watching Arlo develop into such a wonderful loving and obedient Doberman!!!
Hi, Georgia! No, not yet. We've got a pretty in-depth article on our website though that covers a great deal of topics: www.dobermanplanet.com/how-to-train-a-doberman/. If you see anything that's not on there that you need help with, please let us know!
Hey ! At first, the quality of your videos is insane ! I am living in France and I would like to Know if u can recommend me some great breeders to have an American Doberman, breeders Who sells and can forwards dog in France. Here in France it's impossible to found an American doberman and with cropped ears. Thanks You!
LOL! I need to work on getting Moses out of the habit of waking me up in the middle of the night to go out to go potty. It is my fault because I play with him so late in the day after work. He then drinks like crazy. Even though I take him out before bedtime, I think he thinks it is normal to go out somewhere between 1;00 and 3:00 am because he doesn’t always empty much. It is definitely a habit that I helped create.
A wonderful video full of great content, and a reminder of other areas where I can redirect some of the lingering unwanted behaviors of our rescue dobe. He has it in him, now to bring it out with repetition becoming habit. Thank you.
Love you both. I guessed wrong on the tooth brushing segment. I just knew you were going to find your little boy brushing Arlo's teeth with your tooth brush. 🤪🤪🤪
@@russellmcmillan3778 Yeah my Dobie doesn't like the harness. I used it a couple of times when he was younger but when I tried to put it on him again, he got mad and was combative. I guess he felt he was too old for that "kid treatment". lol
I don't yet have a doberman but have been watching nearly all of the videos on your channel and others training videos here on YT in preparation. I aspire to have my doberman only come on the couch next to me when his special blanket is laid out for him to be on. How would the blanket be the trigger instead of the couch in this situation? Is it possible to get to the point to where he doesn't get on the couch if the blanket isn't laid out? Or would I have to be paired to the couch and blank for what I want to be done? -hope that makes sense.
Hey! That's completely possible! I've known a few dogs who have this same behavior engrained in them. Just start conditioning the trigger of the blanket. Most often, the first "trigger" the dog will recognize will be the action of you laying out the blanket. That one is easier to train and much quicker. If you want the dog to recognized an already laid out blanket that you placed on the couch prior, and you are gone from the situation (at work or whatever), and you want your Dobie to only climb up on that blanket, then that will definitely take a lot more work. But I'd start slow and begin working on the trigger of you laying out that specific blanket first (with you present). Your Doberman will quickly learn that means they can come up with a handful of repetitions.
Hello John. Love your channel. I was wondering if you have any videos about protection/guarding training? I have two dobermans (one Red American female and one Black European male) in my ranch and I would like to know if there is anything I could do to ensure that they will protect my family and property while I am gone for work. My dobermans share their home with three rescued little dogs (no dobermans). My female red doberman is a little over 2 years old and she seems to be scared of literally everything which I was shocked by bevause I'd never had a boberman like that before. My black European is about 4 months old and at this point I am not sure about his caracter. I would trully apreciate any advise that you may have. Thank you so much!
Hi , Please tell me ,what do you think about having a Doberman in city house with a back yard, growing from little puppy with us,safe in a family with 2 kids 9 and 4 years old??? We all love this breed but I'm not sure how it will be in the future ,to not become dangerouse for the kids or so? Does a program training for a while at the early age would be enough for him ,to stay with peace of mind if my kids are playing with him at home without knowing some special rules ,can this become dangerouse, or it can be safe anytime? Please write me an answer with your opinion ,becouse I need to decide soon what to do before Christmas.Thank you very much!!!
