UPDATE TO THIS TECHNIQUE: We have revised our recommended approach to stopping nipping and biting in Doberman puppies and we made a much more helpful video showing this in action! Watch it here: th-cam.com/video/hcyGzs3ZbcM/w-d-xo.html

To clear up one thing here... If your Dobie pup CONTINUES nipping after you have done the "time out" to try and calm him or her down... it's a good idea to simply separate the dog until they calm down. You don't want to get caught in the cycle of constant, repetitive, level 3 corrections indefinitely. Separate the dog into an area, like a penned-off area, with plenty of chew toys and "good outlets" for their frustration. Somewhere with plenty of chew toys, puzzle toys, plush toys, frozen toys, etc (LOTS of options). Then when they appeared to be calmed down a bit and they're focused on something else, simply open the door to their pen and let them walk out whenever they want. In other words, separation is better than repetitive level 3 corrections. Stay consistent and calm, and when they're through the teething stages this will get MUCH better. So many owners want to give up at this stage, but it's only temporary as long as you address it.

yes I practiced this last evening when it kind of got overwhelming and hyperactive and started nipping… after initial distractions I just ignored him and calmed myself giving no response to him and then put him in his kennel with some chewables. did not greet him till he calmed down. worked well. hope to be successful in future as well

These techniques apply well to males in the large breeds . I did similar tactics with my Sheppard/husky pup .

We are in this stage. We repeat stage 3 repeatedly . Literally as soon as he gets up from "calming down" he immediately lunges to bite again. When I say bite, its not just nipping it's biting HARD, and draws blood. We will try the time out method. He also will bite just randomly. As I'm making dinner or just walking he is constantly at my ankles biting and tripping me. I know he wants to play, but it always just a challenge just to keep his teeth off of us.

@@samanthagautieri6099 I don’t have a Doberman put I’ve had bully breeds. The best thing to do so exercise your Doobie get him to learn fetch give him treats when he brings back the ball and start making him run constantly that’ll break down that energy he has and his nipping will slow down every time the dog is trying to nip after a good hr min work out 2 preferably give him his chewing toys bones in his mouth every time the dog try’s to bite at you. This will help don’t give up keep him busy mentally with sit stay fetch come commands while playing ball.

Our second Dobie was extremely dominant. She actually run after the rest of my family and destroyed a lot of their clothing. She wasn’t as bad with me as I have a deeper voice and she seen me as the Alpha. But we all stuck with with her training, the biting stopped and she was an amazing Dobie. A true friend to us all. We miss her deeply. So, here we go again with our new little Storm.

When my dobie puppies were going through the teething stage, I'd give them a big, raw, frozen marrow bone instead of toys. They loved to chew on the bones and the marrow made their coat nice and shiny.
One of my dobies always chewed on my wrist...not hard...and I read that, since they don't have arms to give you a hug, that's how they show their affection for you...so despite having a dog-slobbered wrist or coat sleeve, I never discouraged her from doing it. She lived to be 14 and had beautiful teeth 'til the end of her life.
The one that I have now is 13 and still loves to get a marrow bone every couple of weeks. His coat is so glossy and his teeth are also really good for a dog his age.
eems that the marrow bones also gave them an outlet for their need to chew, since they never destroyed anything in the house.

I love that you make it very clear that owning a dog requires serious work to get the dog you want. Dog ownership is very rewarding but you get out of it what you put in. You need a brilliant bond and to develop trust and love between you. This doesn't happen overnight and without a lot of work and effort. The rewards are awesome and being a dog owner has given me some of my best memories and happiness in my life.

Been a Doberman handler and owner for over 40 years. I use the words "Hey Easy" in a firm alpha voice and that has always worked for me and as well I use the same tone and words when giving out treats. My dogs do not get a treat as long as they are going for in a fast or hard manner when I first reach out to give it to them. Upon trying a second time I repeat "Easy" and I turn the backside of my hand to them before turning the hand around and giving it to them if they respond properly. Using these words during play and treats teaches them manners towards you and your family as well as people and other dogs during play times.

We just got a 8 month old red/rust female American Doberman and she’s a princess! But the previous owners didn’t really train her at all. & I’m not sure if she is worried she is going to lose another owner since i am the 3rd owner. She’s super smart and listens when she wants to. I can’t get her to stay down off of other people. & she always walks in the way of us instead of walking on the side. Also she doesn’t listen to my wife & it’s irritating. But other then that she has only had a couple accidents in the house but other then that she only plays with big sticks outside even though I try and not let her have them since I don’t want her getting anything stuck in her teeth. We got her a bone 🦴 & a toy but she has no entrees in it it’s crazy. Thanks for all the great videos been trying to watch them all! 🙏🏼🙏🏼

@DobermanPlanet I'm so thankful I found your site! I fortunately found it on my first stop and have been very impressed with all I've seen and watched today. I have a huge idea I'll be a frequent follower and fan from all I've seen and read today. I've had 4 dobermans, one being a red male professionally trained guard dog I rescued from my vet, I didn't have the heart to leave him there. I was raised with them and I just bought my 5th new fur baby Doberman who has proven to be my greatest challenge yet! So you may see me often at least for a while! Lols!! The man I bought her from has several and I've been around them all. He ended up with 2 huge litters born on the same day! Being as we live in the very deep south of Louisiana it's extremely hot and he tried to keep them indoors for fear of heat stroke. He worked with them well and by barely 4 weeks old he had them eating well but couldn't keep them indoors any longer so I ended up bringing a 4 week pup home that I had first pick of both litters. I chose a black and rust female from European black and rust stud and a European Blue female (Having lived 6 yrs before, during and after the fall of Berlin Wall in what was then W. Germany I became even more familiar with them and their background being German bred. I also have a 5 yr old German "Shedder" Shepherd as I call him and my vet found very funny but true especially as they are I both indoors) as luck would have it I chose the Alpha Bitch from hell tossed out Lols! I knew it on the ride home with her, was more convinced the 2nd day. She's now right at 6 wks and yesterday it was confirmed! So I knew what I was up against from day one! My arm's look like I've been attacked by a wild cat. I've tried ALL I know that you spoke of plus a couple of others but never using physical punishment that I know better than to do. Shcatzi (German for loved one, special one)has been a bitter, snapping, growing full time job and handful. She's also split my lip twice in a day! I went straight to step 3 after a couple of days knowing that technique already. She has her 2nd vet trip Thursday for her 6 wk checkup. I'm already in search of the right trainer and I may have to resort to a guy I've been knowing who trains all of our P.D. canines but is way out of my price range but I'm going to bring her to him next week for Pro aggressive assessment from him and hopefully a cut Lols! He may charge me to not take her!! I will be pulling up your website to read it and start a plan of action. Getting rid of her is not an option. I'd greatly appreciate any deeper insight you may have. I have 13 grandchildren of all age range and she's not doing as well as I'd like with socializing even at this young of an age. The vet had me put her on large puppy food because she's growing too fast being European. So I hope that you can give me anything that I've not already started consistently. My body would greatly appreciate any further abuse. She'll be one I'll eventually have to manhandle on the ground to calm her down if I don't get more help soon!! I think you're doing a HUGE service for this particular breed who can sometimes be just a little difficult!! Thanks in advance!!

I've found that for chewing on the hands, a firm "NO", then turn the tables on them by gently holding the dogs mandible with your fingers and palm, put your thumb inside their mouth and press lightly down on top of their tongue works well. They then try to get your thumb out of their mouth. After a couple of seconds of not being able to do that, release your grip and continue whatever activity you were doing. Maybe not the best advise, but has worked successfully for me.
Also, for hierarchy of dominance, when the puppy (about 3 months and up) gets too rambunctious, I will get them to the ground and basically pin them down by totally covering the dog with my body, arms , and legs. Then let them struggle and try to escape, until the quit fighting it and give up. Then let the dog loose. ...works for me.

A lot of great advice. I can only speak to my own experience. Growing up and to this day we have kept GSD and Rottweilers. A lot of your advice definitely carries over to both those breeds. I would argue that playing tug of war with your dog (assuming they don’t have resource aggression) is huuuuuuge to reduce puppy biting. And letting them win is fine as long as they bring the toy back to you, that shows their are engaged and focused on you, relying on you for that positive engagement. Be clear that biting is not acceptable but playing tug with your dog, if that is an activity they like, is a great and extremely time efficient way to play and bond with your pup.

I definitely have to do level three, I try to redirect my Doberman pup and she keeps fighting! We have her on a leash inside still because we aren’t letting her in certain rooms yet and we try to redirect her with that, she ends up biting us a couple times es because the leash is a bit hard to redirect with. I just saw my grandma do the level three trick and it worked! Thank you so much!

i love your videos and your passion for the greatest breed in the world!! something that needs to be mentioned is how much stronger a Dobe puppy's jaw is than other non-defense breeds! i had owned Irish Setters and Labradors before and their bite as a pup or even an adult is nothing compared to a Dobe puppy bite! =) those jaws are strong! good at defending you, not so fun as the "pincher" bite they sometimes like to do; just using their 4 little teeth in front; 2 top, 2 bottom ones, no fangs needed to pinch you hard! So this is really great for you to teach us to not let our puppy bite us ever. Now i have a 6 year old boy that still "mouths" me when he is excited, but that is NEVER a bite, only a greeting; like shaking or holding my hand when he wants to show love and excitement for seeing me. anyone else have a Dobe that does this?

This is the video I have been waiting for 🙂We have a 15 week old European doberman that was causing me some serious bruises with biting. We found that any physical touching to correct made him bite more frequently and harder. We have to be really consistent about redirection, everyone in the house using the exact same method. Bitter apple spray on furniture and whatever spot or thing on me he was trying to nip made him lose interest really quickly as well. We also started using a snuffle pad for feeding meals and mentally exhaust him a little bit. We have seen drastic improvements this week 🙂

So glad I hit a topic that was useful for you Gonnie! Congrats on your Dobie pup! I haven't experimented much with a snuffle pad... but that's interesting that you are getting a good response with it. I might have to try one of those soon.

John, I'm truly hoping you can help me here. You nor anyone else on TH-cam has ever touched on this subject: I am an American English professor teaching in South Korea and I bought my Dobie, Guinness, in November at 7 weeks old (yes, I know you shouldn't take a pup from its mother until at least 8 weeks, and I feel, personally, minimum 10 weeks, but the idiots kept the dogs outside in back of a battery/tire shop, and it was filthy and getting cold, and I didn't want anything "more" harming my boy [I fell in love with him the moment I met him because he had the most beautiful feet!]). I'm not a fan of backyard breeders, but it's not easy finding a reputable breeder here in Korea, and, beside, I feel I'm saving a life in this way. Now to my issue: Guinness is and always has been a biter! He has a fantastic personality, non-aggressive in any way; I can take his food or any other item no matter its food-value and he will let me have it with no resistance; he love dogs, animals, children, etc. but is a lunger and often scares people even though he is just saying "hi" due to Koreans' fear of large black dogs. However, ever since a "little" puppy, he bites and you can not redirect him with a toy nor even food. He just wants my hand. We wake up with him, he's happy to see me, and once I start petting him, he's after my hand; we play together, tug-of-war (and, by-the-way, he will release the moment I tell him), he's soon after my hand. Granted, he's not biting to hurt, and I'm not worried about that, it's just that at 8 months old, he should not be doing it. Yes, I've tried every single thing you and the "pros" have mentioned (walk away, yelp, redirect, etc.!!! And nothing works!!!) I've raised five Dobermans from my teens to the late 1980s, and I have never had this issue. In fact, my others I could wrestle with them and the only time they put their mouths on me was in play and would merely clamp and hold and would release the moment I told them. I love Guinness very much, and though there are some other issues, this is by far the worst, for I can not seem to break it.

Great video! This works for all breeds. The third one is great, because it doesnt hurt them, but it gives you both a cool down in which they get into petting mode. Never failed for me. My lab never EVER bites now, so its very effective. Arlo is one lucky pup. I didnt know know about the tug of war thing, i let my pup win to keep him engaged. Some things might be different for dobermans, as labs tend towards a gentle attitude. Great video dude!

    • @DobermanPlanet
      @DobermanPlanet  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Thanks so much! Yeah you're right... the not letting them win thing is mainly because Dobermans can be so dominant and it's a good way to keep the dominance in check. Not as much of an issue with many other breeds.

A hand signal, a stern voice and a rolled up newspaper which can be used to make a smacking sound is useful. And in case of puppies, a light return nip/bite on their snout/nose is a good way to discourage biting.

Excellent video!!! The boosting you mentioned towards the end, I totally agree & encourage as for my boy Edmond, having a couple of puppy playdates worked tremendously & if he ever becomes mouthy now, since he learned bite inhibition from playing with the other pups, he knows human skin & will ever so gently just nibble & never chomp down like he did before!

I could redirect my puppy as much as I want she will still want to bite me. I love all the videos and information you provide. We watch them as a family as a way to keep consistent with our 11 week old dobie. At the moment, we are struggling with biting. It is more than nipping or mouthing, it leaves marks and sometimes draws blood (usually from the yanking away because it happens so quickly). I am constantly re-directing him to a toy and have tried level 2 and 3 but nothing is working. I do know this behavior is very related to when he is tired but that is still no reason for biting and if you say no to him he seems to come back at you more forcefully. His behavior is causing a lot of stress and our 13 year old daughter doesn't really want anything to do with him because she is scared. We have a 10 year old pit and had 2 german shepherds in the past so she is very comfortable around dogs but our boy is quite a handful lately and causing a lot of stress for us. Any other suggestions to get him to stop this very unwanted behavior?
