    Hey gang, let’s hang out! I want to show you the newest member of my little bass family, my new (used) Peavey Cirrus 5-STRING!!! I bought this bass within 30 minutes of seeing it. It’s so close to being an exact copy of my 4-string that I know and love so well, I had to have it.
    In this video I’ll take you on a little tour of these basses, what modifications I’ve made to maximize their awesomeness, and play around with the new bass a little bit.
    Shoutout to Hipshot for sending me the hardware to put on the new bass! I love those shiny new tuners.
    Check out my complete step-by-step beginner course: joshfossgreen.c...

    Hey josh, I’m the one who started the comments on reddit about the angle of your wrist. I stand by what I said, so I’m glad your aware of it, as I was pretty sure was the case. I do want to point out, that people on that site have sort of blown it out of porpotion, and just took it upon themselves to assume that I hate you and think you have no credibility. That is not the case, I think you have many good videos, I have recommended them to other bassists looking to learn, but I did make sure to bring up the wrist thing. I have brought this up whenever someone mentions you on Reddit, Because I feel it’s necessary so someone who wants to learn to knows not to do that whenever it’s avoidable. On that site Now it seems that whenever you get brought up(which isn’t uncommon, so your doing something right) someone mentions me and assumes I’m going to come on and attack your credibility, i don’t do that. I apologize if you read any of that and thought i was just being a pretentious jerk, I was not trying to do that at all.

      Hey James! I'm glad you made the comments you did. Like I said in this vid, I actually play with pretty straight wrists (except when that's impossible, like playing certain chord shapes etc.) in "real life," but hadn't really noticed until I read your comments and rewatched some of my videos that I play quite differently when I'm just sitting and teaching. Totally helpful and constructive criticism. Thanks for taking the time to write here, and keeping my wrists honest! :)

    I actually find this video has a deep message. So many channels dedicated to NEW! SHINY! gear and how to get the ZAMAZINNN! TONE! And I watch a lot of them and they're fun. But here you have a guy who is a total bass pro, deep skills, can handle many/most genres, has given away so much for free to the world... And he simply found a bass that works for his sound and needs. Then he moved on. TO PLAY. Bravo.

    Hey Josh ! I love the new Cirrus. Your dad does the BEST set ups and the additional upgrades like input jack, and battery clips are great, too. Your bass is probably around a 2000. The Cirrus came out in 1998. Your wood is walnut with maple stringers and a walnut top, but it might be bubinga, too. Like you, I've played many basses and the Cirrus (the old USA made) are about as good as it gets and a steal for the money.

    • @lipptech1

    Have had my 5 string Walnut Cirrus since the first year they came out in 99. Still sounds great. Signed by Les Claypool and Victor Wooten. Put some buffalo horn knobs on it. Looks great. Changed the headstock, by sanding off graphite and went with custom truss cover. Great basses.

    Hi Josh, I've been a pro player for some 50 years, but have had the pleasure of sponsorships from both Peavey & G&L. Still have my USA Cirrus, probably at the end of the production run. It's one of the most versatile instruments I've ever played, right up there with a Stanley Clark Alembic. Keep up the good work, pass on info to the younger players. Thanks for your videos. Still currently active in 2 pro level bands here in Mexico.

    First I got me a Cirrus 5 BXP tigereye (indonesian model) for a Toto project and I really liked it and still do. So I searched the web for an US model. I found this walnut with bubinga one too. It‘s my workhorse now. For all who are interested, it‘s a 35" scaled bass. Not that convenient for small hands, but a narrow string spacing. I like that, others hate it and say you can‘t slap on it. I‘ve no problems slapping this bass. I had no chance to compare my old one with a new cirrus, but maybe somebody out there has. Look TH-cam for Mike Porcaro and John Taylor (Duran Duran).

    Unplug from the amp or put it on standby before you change guitars. That loud pop can damage your speakers. If you want good knobs try allparts they have a good selection.

    • @joshfossgreen
      @joshfossgreen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha, thanks Robert, I know very well how to avoid the pop, I just didn't want to go through the process while filming, and I knew I was at a low enough volume not to damage my speaker. Also I was running through an amp I don't care about too much. :)

Your's have African bubinga tops with walnut bodies and walnut and maple necks and Pao ferro fretboard. The tigerwood knobs likely aren't original.

    Hey Josh, Good video! I have one question for you which had bothered me for a quite of time. I started my bass this March, and I am about to switch a new bass in June or July. When I was browsing an affordable bass, your 4 string Peavey has got my attention. But I noticed that it is 35 scales instead of 34. My hand is good on Fender Squire vintage......which is 34. Is there a big difference between that? I mean some issues like my finger will have to press harder and stretch more? Thanks.

      Hey Clinton, it's hard to say. I've been playing it so long I don't notice it, it's just what the bass feels like. I don't feel like my Fenders are "shorter" in terms of my subjective experience while playing them. But it does put your arm pretty far out from your body when you're using the first fret. I have a lot to learn, but I will 😉, nice guitar. As a beginner which bass should I get? I enjoyed it 🎸👍🏾😊..... one more thin which way does a lefty hold there guitar from a right handed? Thanks 🎸🎸🎸🎸

      Hey Lena, I've got some in-depth beginner bass reviews here, along with some recommendations: www.bassbuzz.com/gear/beginner-basses/?ref=2
      Playing left is usually just a mirror reversal of playing righty, you get a left hand instrument where everything is flipped. I personally am left-handed but I learned bass like a right-handed person, which is what I tell students to try for the sake of ease in finding instruments. Unless you really want to play lefty, in which case more power to you!

    Hi, I want to purchase a bass that can have low action and low tension on the strings. Years ago someone lent me an old bass without visible brand/model and it played liked butter, effortless pressing of the strings and low smooth tension, even in standard tuning. The owner then moved and came back for it and ever since I've been trying to replicate that bass feel/play. Even the owner didn't know the brand/model of the bass. It was similar to a Fender precision but it wasn't one. I went to a music store and tried several basses but they all seem to have high action and the strings had high tension, they were too tight compared to that bass I loved to play! I'm starting to think that bass was an oddity, maybe those rare instruments that had some kind of "defect" but I'm not giving up on my search. In your experience is there a particular bass model/string combo that can give me what I'm looking for? Thanks!

      Hard to say Tony! Sounds like you should make an offer on that old bass. :)

    I've gotten the Peavey cirrus 5 recently and I've heard that there is a -10 dB control but I can't find it. My di keeps blowing even if the input is on min. I think the 18v electronics are bit too strong for it. Any help is appreciated

    I'm in the market for a new bass. Been playing for 3 years and wondering if I should buy a 5 or 4 string. If it were up to you, would have picked up the peavey cirrus 4 or 5 string? in a hypothetical scenario where you had neither that is.

    • @joshfossgreen
      @joshfossgreen  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Oh definitely 4 string for me, that's where my heart is. Looking forward to exploring the 5 more though.

      Five string is the way to go. Greater range in the sweet spot of the fretboard, deeper depth with the low B string, which more and more music is calling for these days. I found the five string easier for position shifts because of the extended range, which made learning new music incredibly easier. All said, if I were just starting out I would begin with the 5'er.

      My advice for you is to buy a bass with the amount of strings you want.
      I had a four-string bass at first but now I've had a five-string bass a little over a year. I could certainly survive with four strings, but the extra range on a five-string sure is handy sometimes. Especially on theatre-type projects, latin music or if there's a lot of transposing of songs and you just need to get that low note at a point in a song. On a five-string you have also more notes available on a given position which is helpful sometimes. Fivers are usually bigger and weigh more than four-string basses, and if you don't really need that B-string I guess it's better to go with a four-string bass. For a beginner, four strings might be better because of usually better ergonomics, and also because having one less string kind of forces you to change positions more which probably helps when learning the fretboard. I should mention that also one of the reasons I got a 5-string bass was because you could get the 16.5mm string spacing only on the five-string version of my bass (Ibanez SR range) instead ot 19 mm in the four-string ones.

    I use elixirs on my bass but I have found that I have to buy a regular four string set and then buy the single B string In extra long scale. The long scale string doesn’t fit. What do you do?

    • @joshfossgreen
      @joshfossgreen  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use all X-long scale strings on the Cirrus's since they're 35".

  • @millerbassplayer
    @millerbassplayer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have a Cirrus 5 string. I don't know the actual scale, but I can only play a few brands of string that are long enough. I play in drop A and the taper doesn't reach on a lot of strings. Any suggestions?

    • @joshfossgreen
      @joshfossgreen  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cirruses are 35" scale, so I always string them with extra long scale strings. Elixir only makes an extra long B in a taperwound (at least from what I saw, I could be mistaken). It seems to be working okay, but I don't know that much about taperwound vs. not.

    • @millerbassplayer

    First vid of yours I've watched. Glad I saw this one first, as the bent wrist issue you said is in other videos would have really bothered me lol. I like this one. You say "um" a lot, which doesn't bother me, but it's a good idea to figure out what's causing that in your mind.
    Here's what causes the Um issue for me, from higher-order to fundamental: I don't want to be interrupted; I don't feel like I have a strong social presence, so I feel people will step over me in conversation if I don't use a placeholder word; I lack self-confidence; I'm unhappy with myself.
    Sorry for talking. Nice video

    Second thing... String squeak, its driving my friend crazy and I never hear it in your videos? How come? What's the secret? Cheers
