Great idea with the fishing line! I think it will be even better if the knots are on the outside of the cover so the lines are easier to pull out while keeping the gasket seated.
Great tutorial once again. The electric driver sure speeds things up. A quick tip I used when I did the valve covers on my previous Nissan: I sprayed a tiny bit of spray glue on the valve cover so that the gasket wouldn't fall out when installing it.
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE For sure it helps a ton. The one thing you don't want is your gasket to move and get pinched! lol Kinda defeats the purpose of changing it in the first place :) I had a Maxima before owning my G35 and I did the rear valve covers on it... what a pain the rear! Good job not editing out the tape mishap like most people would have. I just used a few dots of RBD around the gasket to hold it in place but the fishing line was a good idea too. How about removing and installing that #7 bolt on the drive side valve cover!? They knew what they were doing by putting those back there...

Just installed a magnaflow on my 350z, spotted an oil leak from the valve covers and recesses of plug wells. Unfortunately I have to replace the covers too but you're helping me save on the labor! Thanks!
Use weatherstripping glue. A dot of it, around each bolt hole will be enough. Dries very quickly. Once you set it down it won't move. It's right next to the silicone at the auto parts store. I use it on o-rings and gaskets that won't stay on by themselves.
This the best video for this I seen yet. I’m doing these and throwing on my gtr injectors , ported lower plenum , spacer and 4inch intake then flashing the tune at the same time as this
I was just watching your spark plug tutorial and found oil all over one so thank you I might try this myself next weekend. At the very least I have a good understanding of what this is so I can take it to a mechanic if I need to. Thank you! Glad I decided to change the spark plugs myself, I would have been charged so much $$$ and would’ve had no idea what was going on.
you made a very good video for both 1st time diy'ers & professionals. you kept with the step-by-step procedure with little or no unnecessary talk. including the factory service manual pages with torque specs and other info was a nice touch. the only step i would've added was to cover the exposed intake manifold ports during assembly as well as disassembly. also, it wouldn't hurt (and is recommended) to cover up ALL holes & passages i.e. hose connections, etc. the blue tape you used works well since it comes off easier than electrical tape or similar. also, for all the work it takes to replace the vc gaskets, i would also replace the vc's themselves in order to get new spark plug tube seals. and a new pcv valve along with installing that catch can wouldn't hurt, either. i plan to keep my car indefinitely, so i don't care to all of this work a 2nd time in a short time because of a leaking tube seal. thanx again for your very good video
I used Victor Reinz 15-10107-01 gasket on 05 G35 and they stayed in the valve cover without falling out. No tape or string required. Also install new NGK LFR5AHX Ruthenium plugs. Did a slight porting and polishing of both the upper and lower plenum. My Butt Dyno says I have a noticeable increase in power.
Very well done. Great video. My mechanic friend advised that I replace the valve covers. He said the plastic valve have likely warped from heat and age. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for the detailed video.

But overall great video, will go back to it when I do my covers.
Awesome videos bro just what I was looking for! I would recommend you change the valve cover as a whole instead of the gasket due to the fact when your spark plug o rings give out you will have to do the job all over again🤦♂️ just a heads up 👌
I did my cover gaskets and oil cooler seal at the same time just to get rid of the most common VQ leaks. Especially since I had too, I did an oil change and ALL of my 5 quart oil drained from the oil filter when I turned on the car.
By any chance do you know the torque values for this job from the valve covers all the way up the final build up? Or were i can find them. Iv been searching online but I cant seem to find definate answers

Very detailed video I'm going to subscribe little bro. Great video just did the job myself with some aluminum ones, I was a little confused when I didnt see you pull out the last coil packs lol threw me off a bit but other than that 👍🏼👍🏼
I need to do this job next weekend. Thank you for the video, I feel confident now to do the job. Question...did the felpro set come with all intake gaskets etc.? Maybe you mentioned it but I missed it.
Idk if you found out yet but it’s only necessary to change out the valve covers if they are cracked, or the spark plug wells have oil because the gaskets for the spark plugs go bad. It’s also recommended to be changed every 100,000 miles, and if you’re buying new valve covers buy OEM don’t buy aftermarket.
Great video! Really helped a lot. I just got done doing this. It came up with three new codes. Two of the codes where because of the valve covers. I was mention that i could have possibly over thighed the valve covers. Even tho i used a torque wrench. Is that even possible for it to throw a code for that because of over thighed?
Eric would create a lot of smoke if there is to much oil in the motor but i my i think my valve cover is done because it leak smoke out the back of the motor and there is oil in the back to spark plug wells
Great video bro!.. Question, I'm having trouble getting the bolt off of the passenger side valve cover in the back, any suggestions on what tool to use because it's not much space at all back there, thanks
fish line idea is brilliant; perfect it by not dragging the knots under the gasket while removing. tie it on top, or cut it/remove so as to not drag it along the gasket/underside. Bump #g35
I've done this job on the VQ35DE a handful of times. The only thing I ask is why take out the coils before the 7:00 part? It has always seemed a lot easier to wait until it's clear to do so? Plus the tape and fishing line? That's a little excessive. Just use your hands! Passenger side is definitely a lot more difficult than the driver side 👍
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Ok so when I removed the plenum, I noticed it was very dirty and had a good amount of sludge built up. I cleaned it pretty good. Is it a good idea to change the oil afterwards?
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Ahh ok I appreciate the tip brother. I'll let you know the end result. I messed around and dropped two of the screws to the valve cover so it's off to the you pick tomorrow. 🤦🏿♂️😂
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE so I finished the job. Unfortunately it's worse than when I started. Its not drawing power when I accelerate. There is a popping sound coming from the exaust, and I smell gasoline when the car is running. The check engine light flashes when I drive so I know the issue is serious. I made all the proper connections, hoses, wires, and bolts. The new valve covers are intact, no leaks coming from them. The intake and throttle body are connected right. Plenum and manifold gasket were put back correctly. My guess is that the spark plugs/coils aren't properly installed. I had trouble extracting the plugs because my socket wrench wouldn't fit. So I left the ones my mechanic put in. Which are new. I don't know...feels like it's not firing on all cylinders. Your thoughts?
You make it look so easy! I have oil on spark plug number 6 i was told to replace the seals but you said i need to replace valve cover? Can you do it for me? Im in California ! I have this issue p0302 cylinder 2 miss firing ,i replaced plug and coil and still no luck! 04 nissan 350z
I need to do this soon, for $25 more I can get new valve covers as well on eBay. Thinking about getting new coil packs they have a package for $98. New valve covers, gaskets, and coil packs. I'm thinking about painting the new valve covers with some high temperature paint. Need a color that will pop, might as well paint the plenum too. Then finish it off and paint the cam covers. Just bought a 04 G35x and it's in great condition. It does have a small leak that I've pin pointed to being the oil cooler gasket. Then I noticed there's oil buildup on the driver side valve cover. It's likely just all of the spilt oil from missing the fill hole while filling it with oil. The other side isn't bad, just dirt and 16yrs of build up. I'm going to change the plugs, so I was thinking might as well replace the valve covers. I'm curious how clean the intake is, as well as the cams and valve train. Anyone know if you can clean them while the valve covers are off? Would all of the crud wash down into the pan? Just flush it out with a light weight oil. Maybe I should just wipe it down? I just figured since I have everything accessable, might as well give it a good cleaning. I don't see why it'd harm anything, unless it's really dirty and there's sludge everywhere. I don't think mine is, the engine is runs smooth and is pretty quiet. If I get some seafoam in a spray bottle and just give everything a good soak. Then go over it with an old toothbrush. Any thick sludge, if it even has any I can wipe away with a microfiber cloth. Just making sure nothing thick falls into the oil pan. Not sure if it'll even be worth the trouble. I'm not expecting any miraculous changes, just maybe better response time and gas mileage? I'm very mechanically inclined this is an easy job. I've just never cleaned the valve train before, so I'm curious if it's even worth the hassle? I will also clean the intake really good as well as the throttle body. If I unplug the throttle body and clean it, will I still have to do the re learning procedure? I'm also going to add some more intake piping so I can relocate the MAF and intake filter. Right now it's resting by the dip stick right next to the valve covers. Wanting to bring it right behind the headlights into the bumper area.
I use indian shellac it works as an liquid adhesive that allows the gasket silicon to tack to the cover for the install pricey but worth its weight try it the sell that at all auto parts

If you’re in an emergency and can’t order that gaskets, you can use ultra grey Rtv to make the gaskets. Done it many times lasted two years or more
Thanks for the video brother. I didn't have tape or fishing line and it took me about 5 attempts on each side lol
Went To Turning My Socket Wrenches Today, Cause Your Video!!!...My Gasket was leaking so Bad My FX Was practically Pouring Out Oil.
Gonna tackle mine after this video. Great work man. Very helpful. 👍
Thank you!
Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up if you found it useful thanks for watching!
Where did u get the head gasket kit?
@@edgarmartinez8070 I didn't replace the head gasket in this video if your referring to the valve cover gasket it bought it from rock auto
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE my bad, i meant the kit u got other than the valve cover gaskets. The metal ones.
I bought that one from autozon for like $45
Very detailed video I'm going to subscribe little bro. I'm usually a Mercedes man but I bought a 2004 Infiniti G35 because I wanted to see what it was like to drive one of those got it for 1500 and it had a bunch of mods on it so now I need to clean up what he didn't take care of and this is one of the jobs that needed to be done
Great video just did the job myself with some aluminum ones, I was a little confused when I didnt see you pull out the last coil packs lol threw me off a bit but other than that 👍🏼👍🏼
The tape idea 🤣🤣. Great stuff tho awesome vid Eric!
Awesome video dude. Any chance you could drop the link to the gasket kit you used to replace all those metal ones?
Here you go www.amazon.com/dp/B005E9LOPW/ref=cm_sw_r_as_gl_apa_gl_i_3EQ09EGNKGAP1CWHDFQ3?linkCode=ml2&tag=ericsdiygarag-20
I need to do this job next weekend. Thank you for the video, I feel confident now to do the job.
Question...did the felpro set come with all intake gaskets etc.? Maybe you mentioned it but I missed it.
Tip, use blue rtv, small bead, inside the valve cover then set the gasket into the cover, let it sit for about 10 minutes, gasket won't fall out..
Thanks for the tip but I rather not use rtv to hold the gasket in place, never liked that method
Is there a specific reason you did the coils first and then the plenum? Seems like it would be easier to do coils after the plenum has been removed?
No reason one of those things you realize after you do it lol
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE its sad I asked this question two years ago, yet I still haven't gotten around to doing my valve cover gasket lol
Hey boss great video! I just have one question is it necessary to change the valve covers when you’re doing the valve cover gasket’s?
Idk if you found out yet but it’s only necessary to change out the valve covers if they are cracked, or the spark plug wells have oil because the gaskets for the spark plugs go bad. It’s also recommended to be changed every 100,000 miles, and if you’re buying new valve covers buy OEM don’t buy aftermarket.
This video was done incredibly well, thank you!
No thats not possible. I need to know what codes you have so I can better answer your question but vavle covers don't give a code
Thanks bro for the vid. You saved my ass. You have a subscriber for life now
Thank you, I'm glad the video helped ✊
Perfectly explained every step...GREAT.
thank you!
Eric would create a lot of smoke if there is to much oil in the motor but i my i think my valve cover is done because it leak smoke out the back of the motor and there is oil in the back to spark plug wells
Yes correct
Super sick man, gives me the confidence to do it myself.
glad the video helps out 💪🏼
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE haven't put it back together, been to busy with work Dx
I miss my car 😔😔💔
Good video. Very helpful. The edits and the part Pics was good 2.
Thank you!
Great video bro!..
Question, I'm having trouble getting the bolt off of the passenger side valve cover in the back, any suggestions on what tool to use because it's not much space at all back there, thanks
Get a small 10mm gear wrench that usually works or a 10 swivel
fish line idea is brilliant; perfect it by not dragging the knots under the gasket while removing. tie it on top, or cut it/remove so as to not drag it along the gasket/underside. Bump #g35
Yup Works every time 👍
I've done this job on the VQ35DE a handful of times. The only thing I ask is why take out the coils before the 7:00 part? It has always seemed a lot easier to wait until it's clear to do so? Plus the tape and fishing line? That's a little excessive. Just use your hands! Passenger side is definitely a lot more difficult than the driver side 👍
Yeah now I remove them after I remove the upper and lower plenum.
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Yes the passenger side is a lot more difficult to seat in the gasket than the driver side. I know this!
Very informative video. This is my first attempt at changing the valve covers on my 06 Infinity M35. Fingers crossed. I'm going in!
let me know if you have any questions👌🏼
@@ERICSDIYGARAGE Ok so when I removed the plenum, I noticed it was very dirty and had a good amount of sludge built up. I cleaned it pretty good. Is it a good idea to change the oil afterwards?
the oil is from the pcv you might need a oil catch can. The sludge will get burnt in the combustion camber you don't need to change your oil
Your thoughts?
nice technique with the fishing line
They do sell spark plug tube seals ! You just have to buy them separately. According to the auto part store.
Great work in the video bro. Very useful for sure.
Thank you!
Yo bro thank you I love how you explain everything definitely helped me out
You make it look so easy! I have oil on spark plug number 6 i was told to replace the seals but you said i need to replace valve cover? Can you do it for me? Im in California ! I have this issue p0302 cylinder 2 miss firing ,i replaced plug and coil and still no luck! 04 nissan 350z
I'm az unfortunately but I would do it for you
Should have had the intake plugged up with the towels while you were installing the valve covers too
I need to do this soon, for $25 more I can get new valve covers as well on eBay.
Man. If you lived in LA I would pay u to do this for me. I'm a girl and don't have the tools. Wished I knew how to do it myself
I use indian shellac it works as an liquid adhesive that allows the gasket silicon to tack to the cover for the install pricey but worth its weight try it the sell that at all auto parts
What’s the name of the hose that gets brittle which connects across the valve cpvers
Joler Sampang this
Not exactly sure but you can just get a regular hose and clamp it in place

I'm trying to look for a video like this but for a head gasket replacement.
Great video buddy. 👍. As good as Christ Fix’s one. Once again congratulations 👍👍👍
Thank you!
instead of the fishing line thing you can just put some blobs of rtv in the grove that the gasket sits in. makes for more cleanup next time around up much easier in the moment.
I've never been a fan of using rtv on a gasket
30 minute tutorial

It can be difficult lol

Why was gasket spray adhesive not used? Just curious....
is servicing the injectors required ? or can i just finish doing the valve cover gaskets once all that’s off ?
How can you tell if spark plug tubes leak?
If you see oil inside the spark plug tube
