Greg, I'm only adding my voice to this chorus because I know from some of your past videos that you're an ethics-conscious creator, especially when it comes to sponsors/brand deals. I know that you care about the impact you have on your viewers and on the world, because you have shown that you're that kind of person. I trust that you didn't know about the allegations against BetterHelp (they might be more than allegations at this point, not sure), and I trust that once you become aware of the situation that you would drop the sponsor as soon as you're legally able to. Great video by the way--you're one of the best people I've seen on TH-cam when it comes to giving detailed tasting notes. I've wondered how much of a range there is in ginger beers before, and apparently there's a lot! Keep up the great work!
More generically known as clouding agents. Basically they mimic the cloudy, colloid suspension you would typically see in fruit juice (or vegetable juice, since we're talking ginger) by adding an oil emulsion. It's an optical illusion to make the drink appear cloudy as if it had a higher juice or natural product content. Basically never a good sign to see on an ingredient list, unless you're specifically looking for a cloudy mixer.
From another beverage's official ingredient tax filing: FN-14043 Neutral Cloud is a thick white liquid composed of 50 percent emulgum solution, 21 percent demineralized water, 15 percent gum arabic solution, 12 percent estergum solution, and less than one percent each of citric acid, and sodium benzoate. The product is used to create opacity (cloudiness) in citrus drinks such as lemonade.
@@hiddennemo9301That's not always the ingredient contents, however. I work in the beverage industry as a food scientist and lots of companies have their own recipes.
Long-time fan of the show, just expressing that the Betterhelp sponsor is bad as their service often actively harms people. I fully expect that you didn't know they were harmful but I hope not to see this sponsor return.
Content creators need to make money any way they can so stop being a snowflake and let people pay their bills. If you don't like a product, don't use it.
@@vleaky3430I mean sure people need to make money but isn't it generally universally frowned upon for people to make their money off of something that harms others? I mean there are laws to protect consumers from companies who would do whatever they could to make a profit regardless of the effects on the people.
@@vleaky3430 As someone who backs Gregg's patreon for this exact reason... Stop being a facetious asshole. It's one thing to promote a product that's just... Bad, but isn't harmful; taking their money just doesn't matter as much. But... BetterHelp actively harms its users, and uses the lack of knowledge of this from smaller creators to get people to sponsor them so they can continue to rake in money while continuing to not care about their clients. If they ACTUALLY cared, had licensed therapists, and were just providing a bad service because of overpricing or something? Okay, that's pretty excusable; annoying, but excusable if people wanna overpay; but... Taking advantage of people not knowing better is beyond scummy, it's actually villainous. I cannot cite any exact sources of what BH has done, but I know they sell info of their users (although who doesn't, these days...) and they, again, have unlicensed, unvetted therapists just there to make money. Or even if they ARE there to help, they might be giving the wrong advice and being taken to heart because it's a therapy service and they're unlicensed.
I think he does know but is locked into a contract (which he likely signed when he didn't know yet), if you look at how he promoted them compared to other sponsors, both in the video and pinned comment, it seems like he's not as enthusiastic and is basically just doing the bare minimum the contract requires of him.
A cool fact about Goslings vs Barritts. The traditional Bermuda dark n' stormy was made with Goslings black seal rum with Barritts ginger beer. The partnership between Goslings and Barritts fell through at some point and Goslings began to make their own ginger beer. Still if you are in Bermuda, it will be Barritts with Goslings rum.
I dunno what happened but I've always found it douchey. They'll sue you for making one with any other rum, but apparently swapping the ginger beer is fine. Massive hypocrisy
@@nevadanate4957 In Australia, Bundaberg Rum has the copyright for Dark and Stormy, Goslings are presently trying to contest it. Bundaberg don't sue though; they just use the copyright to sell premixed canned drinks.
Yep, also my favorite. They have a good sugar free version and makes a great Moscow Mule. It is quite a bit sharper, but has better taste compared to Bundaberg.
I've tried a lot of ginger beers. CnB is by far the best and plays it's role best in mixed drinks that require it. Which is hilarious, because I'm pretty sure there isn't any actual ginger in it...
It's one of my favorites, though the Barretts and Bundaberg are good too. Kroger's ginger beer is a great mixer as well. My absolute favorite is Cock n Bull Cherry Ginger Beer, but it's hard to find.
MAN Bundy is the best, a quintessential part of the Aussie Christmas for me. You haven't lived life til you've spent Christmas Day sitting on the back porch in 29c heat, with a bundy ginger beer in one hand and a fresh mango in the other, watching the most incredible sunset you've ever seen.
About once a month I make the ginger syrup recipe that Cocktail Chemistry used for his Moscow Mule. It’s delicious. My stepdad goes fucking feral for it.
This is a fantastic episode, Greg, it's such a shame that you took Betterhelp as the sponsor. I know a guy has gotta pay the bills, but they have such a long history of selling clients data (not officially medical, not HIPPA protected!) and otherwise having unlicensed therapists give desperate people potentially dangerous advice. I'm legitimately devastated to find out they got an overall honest man like you to sell for them. I really, really encourage you to look deeper into their history as a company and their violations of medical ethics.

Gonna be real, Greg- I was disappointed to see the better help sponsorship. Their therapists are often unlicensed or students and they're not HIPAA compliant, which means that their patient's information isn't private or protected. Get that bread, by all means- just don't get it from Better Help.
@@eventingirl001 then again, "The Federal Trade Commission finalized an order requiring online counseling service BetterHelp to pay $7.8 million and prohibiting it from sharing consumers’ health data for advertising, resolving allegations the firm shared consumers’ sensitive health data with third parties such as Facebook and Snapchat for advertising after promising to keep such data private." was last year already.
I don't like the idea of Better Help, but is their evidence they are not HIPPA compliant at this time? Also, they clearly state their therapists are licensed. Is there evidence this isn't true?
I can get 1 litre bottles of Schweppes Ginger Beer in my local supermarket here in France and that's pretty good too! Especially as one bottle of that costs the same as one bottle of Bundaberg or Fentimans!
By excluding "ginger ales,' you missed out on a classic southern US option: Blenheim's Ginger Ale. Available in the regular (designated as "NAH," or "not as hot" on the bottle) and spicy ("HOT" on the bottle) you've missed out on an American icon. Made in Hamer, South Carolina since 1903, it's a classic, straightforward ginger ale with a serious kick: rivaling--nay, surpassing--the power of so-called ginger "beers" in its balance of sweetness to gingery-ness. I heartily recommend you seek out a six-pack of both the regular and hot Blenheim ginger ales. You won't be disappointed.
Just want to let you know Greg that BetterHelp is a known scam organization. I would assume you didnt know when you agreed to the sponsorship. Hopefully you can distance yourself from them in the future

So I'm a ginger beer snob and here's my rule of thumb. If I can't feel the ginger beer burning fown my esophagus and then settling hot into my stomach, it's not spicy enough. Source: I'm Caribbean. We do ginger beer *strong* here.
I really like a strong burn from my ginger beer too. It's just really inconvenient to find really solid ones where I live in the States. I usually stick to Reeds, Barritts, and Fever Tree is my fallback option if the others are sold out. Pretty much all the other ones at the stores around here are more like ales or seltzers and it really sucks.
I came here to say this. I can’t find a properly gingery, less sweet ginger beer like I used to drink when I was in college (not even sure what the brand was, but I asked a friend recently and it’s no longer made), but Fever Tree has come closest of the many I’ve tried. I am curious to try Reed’s Strongest and also the Betty Buzz, but I’m really surprised Fever Tree didn’t rank higher with Greg!
I was very confused that Fever Tree wasn't in his top 3... it's well balanced, perfect for mixing, and he didn't have anything bad to say about it so that was strange.
I think it could be regional, and is also called a ginger *brew,* but Maine Root makes one of the best I have ever had. Great heat and balanced sweetness.
For those who were asking about Goya (and you should be) it's buried in the 'international' section at grocery stores in the North East. Most people don't go there when they're looking for ginger beer. If you know, you know. It's our little secret. Greg had good takes on all of the ones he tried. That Saranac is dreadful stuff.
Kind of out of left field with this post but wanted to thank you Greg for making me decide to get a Drink Mate as my up grade for a soda maker/carbonation machine, thing is great! Using fruit juice to make fizzy drinks is actually really good.
When it comes to ginger beer, my favorite for drinking straight is definitely Maine Root, but the ginger is probably too strong/spicy for mixing. There's also Galvanina, which is a believe an Italian brand, that has an amazing ginger beer. For mixing though, it's gotta be Fever Tree.

@@thespethalone1950 I watch every HTD episode pretty much religiously and do not ever recall him pushing this sponsor. I'm confident he never had them before then either.
Fentiman's is pretty common in the UK - in the supermarkets and a decent number of pubs/bars. I'd say as popular as Fever Tree. My go-to in the UK is the Supermalt Ginger Beer. Similar to Bundaberg but less carbonated, less sweet and more gingery. The Old Jamaica Extra Fiery is also pretty good. +1 on BetterHelp comments.
Greg! Look forward to the video, Gingerbeer is wonderful, and in NC we are lucky enought o have a Ginger Brewery called Gingers Revenge which has an alcholic version of a vairety of their Gingerbeers which are wonderful. Not sure if you can get them your way, but I highly recommend, great for the Summertime. Cheers!
In Scotland, especially Glasgow, ginger is a generic for any fizzy drink like Americans would use soda or pop. This is because it was the first commercially made and sold fizzy drink. Also Crabbies alcoholic ginger beer is fantastic
For reference, fentimans is classed as a premium soft drink company in the uk. Swepes or fevertree is normally a standard over here for most mixers. Crabbies is the standard ginger beer you get here but is alcholic and they also do ginger wine which is worth a try as a ginger lover
I'm not saying don't take the Better Help sponsorship. Get that bag. But I would say to go listen to Robert Evans of Behind the Bastards for how to deliver a Better Help spot. Dude sounds like his dog just got put down while talking about Better Help. I have never come across a notional therapy ad that made me regard the therapy organization as a place to actively avoid until I heard him pitch Better Help. He sounds like he'd rather talk about Pol Pot and Robert E. Lee than talk to a therapist from Better Help while ready Better Help copy. It's remarkable.
heh, I found a bottle of that in the grocery store as a young woman who thought it was like ginger ale. I made a mistake that about knocked me outta my chair when I took a deep drink, then found a new favorite drink as soon as I recovered.
It’s a travesty I didn’t see this until now, I LOVEEEEE GINGER BEER. I personally always prefer local/homemade ginger beer, I especially love the more dry and more sharp ginger beers! AMAZING VIDEO OVERALL.
Reed's Strongest was the ginger beer I was hoping you'd cover! I love it as a mixer or by itself. When I tried making my own ginger beer, it was the flavor I was trying to approach. The pineapple juice really does something to compliment the ginger burn without over-sweetening the beverage. I try to keep some on hand in case of an upset stomach, too (but often fail to, its just that good!)
Glad to see that the very first one is the first ginger beer I've ever tried on its own. It really is approachable too. Made me realize how much I apparently love ginger. Highly recommend, even if it doesn't end up being your favorite like it is mine.
My favorite ginger beer is The Great Gentleman. Nice balance of spice and sweetness. I never see anybody using it in cocktails but it's pretty tasty in a dark and stormy.
I recently did a similar ginger beer experiment, myself! I'm so glad this came out when it did. If you have access to Maine Root beverages (I think they sell online, too), they make a Ginger Brew that I can't recommend enough. It registers as pretty sweet for me (3.33...g/fl.oz.), but it has a wallop of ginger kick. Like "make you cough if you drink it straight" kick. Lightly carbonated, with a lovely green/fresh flavor. It has become my go-to for Mezcal Mules.
I love Ginger Beer both Alcoholic and non-alcoholic. I have even started making Ginger Mead, which is amazing, the Ginger and Honey just work so good together!
My understanding is that the alcohol content of small beer is a side effect of the fermentation process, but that fermentation process was actaully intended to provide effervescence. I really like Bunderberg because a lot of the ginger beers I've had have, at least to me, too much of a lime flavor on the back end because I think they're inteded to be mixers more than drinks to drink on their own. That said, the big ginger beer I see here a lot is Fever Tree, which comes in bottles rather than the mixer cans.
Fever Tree is definitely my favorite, it's dryer and hotter than Bundaberg, but it also has no other fruit juices or flavors, so it definitely makes for a great drink on it's own or as a mixer I also really dislike reeds, I don't want pinapple in my ginger beer, might work well in a dark n stormy, but if i'm just drinking it on its own or in a mule, I much prefer something without fruit juices
Don't see a lot of ginger beer brands where I am, but the one I like is at the spicier end & high carbonation is The Great Gentleman. I do drink it straight, but it's intensity goes well in mixed drinks too. It's branded as "Jamaican style" but made here in Canada.
Love me a mule. My grandfather used to make ginger, root, birch and sasparilla beers. He'd put em in the basement until the bottles started to explode. Not the safest way to brew, but man he made delicious soda
I lived in Boston for many years and really appreciate that below your comment TH-cam automatically supplied the “Translate to English” hyperlink! Hahahahaha
Missed Grace, which is my favourite. Possibly only available in Canada. Deffo the cheapest one usually found in grocery stores, slightly artificial flavour but waaaaay spicier than anything else I've found locally.
As someone who decided to adopt a straight edge lifestyle this year I really appreciate and love these alcohol free/mostly/partially alcohol free episodes. Even though I'm boring now you aren't getting rid of my subscription. Just try! Edit: I just realised I don't actually understand or know how TH-cam works and don't know if you have the power to ban me from subscribing but if so please don't, I was all bluster
I’m a sober human and I love this channel. Mostly for Greg, secondarily for the content and some good ideas. And I also appreciate the episodes with some non-alcoholic variety.
Okay, the only brands in this video I've seen in a local store here in Western Canada are Fever Tree and Fentiman's. Around here I've seen and occasionally purchased Grace, The Great Gentleman, and Canada Dry (yes, they make a Ginger Beer as well as Ginger Ale).
I love ginger beer! Probably my favourite soft drink, that's so frustrating not finding it in Italy (for a fair price). We need a part 2 with Fever Tree, Bundaberg light (it's also more gingery, I prefer it), Fentiman's Pink Ginger, Old Jamaica (original and fiery)... ;) (also, you probably just forgot to do your background check on BetterHelp, but seriously, their employees sometimes aren't even psych professionals, they sold private medical data, people were mistreated by "therapists"... Probably one of the worst mainstream sponsors available nowadays. Please, ditch them, blink twice during the segment if you signed a multiple episode deal and can't opt out)
Neutral cloud is 50% emulgum, 21% demineralised water, 15% gum arabic, 12% estergum and a small amount of citric acid and sodium benzoate. It's used to make drinks look cloudy, presumably without altering the flavour too much.
I was half expecting Ryan Reynolds to just break a wall into your show by pausing it, pulling the frame to one side and saying “Oh, you thought it wasn’t actually ME, huh? Well, now I’m in your show, so let’s do this.”
Im from Australia and Ive been to the town of Bundaberg where they make the ginger beer and another company also called bundaberg make rum there and that rum is very popular, the most popular in Australia, if you could somehow get your hands on some I highly recommend the overproof bottle or the solera, they taste fantastic, lots of molasses notes.
I buy quite a bit of fever tree ginger beer, but they stopped selling the cans where I live which was the best way to buy it. Only bottles left which are way more expensive.
If you get a chance, try Maine Root’s ginger brew. It is a very punchy and ginger forward ginger beer. The only one that I know to rival (and edge out) the Reed’s extra ginger.
After a big party I inherited a large volume of Fever Tree ginger beer and I've been making my way through it. To avoid drinking a lot of alcohol at home all the time, I also tried it out as Greg did with some bitters and, my friends, this is EXCELLENT. The bit of cinnamon and spice notes from a few dashes of bitters of any kind really makes it pop over some ice. Try it with orange bitters for sure! Now I need to restock...
The "Spicy Ginger Brew" from Maine Root is easily my favorite. It stands up to alcohol when mixing, and by itself, it's a refreshing, ear opening, gingery beverage. One of the few sodas I will actually buy anymore! (Also, is that not Angostura up against the brick on the camera-left?)
We make a lot of mules and have always used Q mixers for convenience. I love to drink them on their own with a bit of rose's sweetened lime juice too. Never thought that when compared to other ginger beers that it would be less ginger beer-y! I thought it was solidly ginger haha, I do love citrus though so it makes sense that I like the orange in there!
iirc the reason why Bundaberg does traditional-ish fermented ginger, root beer, and birch beer is the fact that well they're an actual distillery, this is their side hustle
Bundaberg soft drinks aren't the same company as Bundaberg rum, but the factories are very close to each other, I've been to both and the soft drink factory was way more fun honestly, they have a special cola they only sell at the factory.
They actually do a huge range of sodas, including an excellent passionfruit one, but also icecream soda, a lemon/lime bitters, guava, blood orange and lemonade, all of which are very serviceable. Given the quality of their engine cleaner (aka "rum"), sodas should be their main hustle.
So excited for this episode, ginger beer is the star of some of my favorite drinks. I've recently gotten into homebrew for ginger beer and its interesting in its own right.
It sounded familiar, had to check and that brought me back to 2016, when I tried every ginger beer I could find during an internship in the UK. YES PLEASE! It's among the ones I liked the most!
I’d like to this the video but with all alcoholic ginger beers. Because I only know Crabbie’s. It’s great, but I really like ginger beer, so I’d like to know all of them
For my home bar I'll typically stock: - Fever Tree - Regatta - Topo Chico Ginger Beer Maine Root Ginger Brew gets an honorable mention as well. I dislike the Q Ginger Beer or any other Ginger Beer that adds capsaicin or chili extracts to mimic what ginger juice/extract should be providing in the drink.
Just a note about Betty Buzz: I'm a buyer for a wine shop. The Betty Buzz line (non-alc, they have a RTD cocktail line as well) was presented to me as mocktails that can moonlight as mixers. Blake Lively doesn't drink but many people in her life do, so she wanted something that could easily work both ways. At least that was the pitch the sales rep gave me. I've had maybe 75% of these ginger beers. Other than Bundaberg and maybe Fever Tree, Betty Buzz is probably my favorite.
Got a couple in my neck of the woods in PA (and used to work at one). Happy surprise to see the shout out, but I can't say I've ever tried the store brand ginger beer.
Not gonna lie, if I want a dark and stormy, I go to Fever Tree (in bottles!) or Goslings (which is more mellow). But hey, we're all different in tastes
Sorry, dude. Once I heard the sponsor, that's an automatic skip. I know they pay a lot, but you absolutely know better. See you in the next video, buddy.
Thanks for this. You can't beat decent ginger beer. But I'd also recommend some of the _Rochester Ginger_ Dickensian ginger drink: a mix between a syrup/cordial/concentrate, it's nice to drink neat, amp up ginger drinks, or to replace ginger and sugar in drinks. You can DIY it too.
I mean I know this is probably because it's America, but the lack of Old Jamaica is crazy. It's not fancy but it is 100% the easiest to find in the UK where ginger beer is pretty commonly drunk by itself
Old Jamaics and Coca Cola is a lovely combo. (Or at least it was before the sugar tax). They have tried a few times to make ginger flavoured coke and it always comes out like syrupy ginger bread. What you need is the sweetness to be cut and the heat from the ginger. Complements the cola very well. (Much like vanilla)
How did this video not get more likes? This was a fantastic review, so if you come back and watch these videos, hit that button. Show this man and his work some love.
Barrett's varies distinctly if it is canned or bottled. The bottled version being much more cream soda like in both taste and texture. Personally we use canned for mules and bottled for a dark and stormy.
The Q Kola is amazing. Fantastic mixer that doesn't overwhelm nicer whiskeys and rum. It's not robust, kinda thin, but complex flavor. And Fever Tree has the best tonic I know of.
As an Indonesian, I suggest you need a follow up for the homemade of Ginger Beer from Betawi clique in Jakarta, Indonesia. That kind of Beer is also a counted non-alcoholic but it has a good taste that similar to something called 'Sparkling Herbalic Soft Drink' taste. You and Meredith should check it and make that for next episode (or maybe someday).
BetterHelp has been investigated for selling protected patient data. They used to have a large presence on TH-cam but fell off the map due to overwhelming backlash. They're trying to make a comeback; please don't use them as a sponsor.
Bundaberg, one of my favorites. Not too hot, not too strong, not too sweet. Well balanced. I like ones with more kick to them, but this makes a very good comparison point for everything else.

Neutral Cloud is basically a combination of neutral flavored oils designed to promote that cloudy look in citrus or ginger drinks, for anyone curious.
More generically known as clouding agents. Content creators need to make money any way they can so stop being a snowflake and let people pay their bills. If you don't like a product, don't use it.
agree

We're lucky enough to have Barritt's in a few of the local liquor stores. I prefer it to the Goslings version.
No cock n bull? That one is my favorite. Makes a good dark and stormy too.
Yep, also my favorite. They have a good sugar free version and makes a great Moscow Mule. It is quite a bit sharper, but has better taste compared to Bundaberg.
yeah just tasted that one a few weeks ago. It is probably my most favourite ginger beer besides homemade.
I've tried a lot of ginger beers. CnB is by far the best and plays it's role best in mixed drinks that require it. Which is hilarious, because I'm pretty sure there isn't any actual ginger in it...

My absolute favorite is Cock n Bull Cherry Ginger Beer, but it's hard to find.

Ooh, I'll have to try that! I usually just go buy a packet of champagne yeast at the brew supply store.
Glad to see you liked Fever Tree. Its my go-to for cocktails, mixes exceptionally well.
Fentimans is sold as a premium soft drink in the UK. More standard types are Britvic (okayish mixers) and D&G from Jamaica.
I can get 1 litre bottles of Schweppes Ginger Beer in my local supermarket here in France and that's pretty good too!
Especially as one bottle of that costs the same as one bottle of Bundaberg or Fentimans!
Adding my voice to the Better Help Bad, Actually chorus.

Pretty much all the other ones at the stores around here are more like ales or seltzers and it really sucks.
I really like me a Fever Tree ginger beer.
Never tried Fentimans ginger beer, but they make a rose lemonade that I just ADORE
Their Dandelion and Burdock is great as well.
I was very confused that Fever Tree wasn't in his top 3... it's well balanced, perfect for mixing, and he didn't have anything bad to say about it so that was strange.
Fever Tree is absolutely terrific, and my local Costco carries it, so that's that.
Would have liked to see him try Blenheim's.

Cheers!
Sounds interesting! Where do you find them locally?
In Scotland, especially Glasgow, ginger is a generic for any fizzy drink like Americans would use soda or pop. This is because it was the first commercially made and sold fizzy drink. Also Crabbies alcoholic ginger beer is fantastic
Greg, there's clearly a giant bottle of Ango behind you.
I was thinking the same haha
Nice!! Been waiting for this one!! Thanks HTD Team!
For reference, fentimans is classed as a premium soft drink company in the uk. Swepes or fevertree is normally a standard over here for most mixers.
Crabbies is the standard ginger beer you get here but is alcholic and they also do ginger wine which is worth a try as a ginger lover
I'm in Canada and just discovered Crabbie's this year. I'm going to go broke buying those bottles lol.

I would recommend Summit Ginger Beer. It’s the house brand at Aldi and has a nice, strong peppery bite. It’s my go-to for a Dark and Stormy.
My favorite ginger beer is a Caribbean style made by Grace Island Sodas. It will burn the hair right out of your nose the ginger is so strong.
heh, I found a bottle of that in the grocery store as a young woman who thought it was like ginger ale.
Bundaberg's lemonade is amazing too. Makes great drinking and cocktails. It's my choice for lemon, lime, and bitters.
Love that you're doing ginger beers! (Or as my husband calls it, beer. Gotta love redhead dad jokes.)
I love the idea of adding mixers to the comparison series. Can you do pre-made tonic waters and tonic syrups next?
Hey, Greg, you missed out on Old Jamaica Ginger Beer. That stuff rocks.
Fever Tree is definitely my favorite, it's dryer and hotter than Bundaberg, but it also has no other fruit juices or flavors, so it definitely makes for a great drink on it's own or as a mixer
I also really dislike reeds, I don't want pinapple in my ginger beer, might work well in a dark n stormy, but if i'm just drinking it on its own or in a mule, I much prefer something without fruit juices
Don't see a lot of ginger beer brands where I am, but the one I like is at the spicier end & high carbonation is The Great Gentleman. I do drink it straight, but it's intensity goes well in mixed drinks too. It's branded as "Jamaican style" but made here in Canada.
No Maine Root Ginger Brew. It’s a staple here in the North East. Once I bought it I could never go back to any other.
Awesome on its own and makes a great mule.
Love me a mule. My grandfather used to make ginger, root, birch and sasparilla beers. He'd put em in the basement until the bottles started to explode. Not the safest way to brew, but man he made delicious soda

Yeah Maine Root's is my favorite. I don't really see it around anymore these days since Whole Foods got sold to Amazon.
