Paper Mario: Master Quest - Giga Bowser

  • There's only one real major change in the Bowser fights in Master Quest. When Bowser's HP falls below a certain threshold (150 in this fight), he will attack immediately after using the Star Rod to go invincible. Not only can Bowser obviously not be hit when invincible, but his attack power increases significantly (I believe it doubles in Vanilla Paper Mario, but I think it's different in Master Quest). In the rematch against Final Bowser (named Giga Bowser in the Star Temple), he will use the Star Rod to go invincible after every three attacks, so you are able to predict when Bowser will go invincible. When you know he's going to go invincible, you can use Bow to go Outta Sight to completely avoid his attack, which can kill you even at full health with all defensive badges.
    I brought nothing but Jelly Ultras to this fight. I tried to stall out when I used them by using Smooch instead, that way I could run my FP to near 0 before needing to heal, and getting as much use from every Jelly Ultra that I could, on both the HP and the FP side.
    Also, there is a bug in this version that if you hide from Bowser when he goes invincible and he uses his triple claw+fire breath attack, he won't go back to his original position until his next attack. This can throw off some of your timing on blocking the attacks. The biggest two attacks you must block are his shockwave attack, which hits your partner, and you absolutely must block the attack with your partner or you're dead, and his lightning attack, that can paralyze Mario if unblocked. This was the most nerve-wracking part of the fight, as a missed partner block on the shock wave effectively ends the battle. Your partner will be out of commission when Bowser goes invincible, and Bowser will have you in checkmate.
    The shock wave from Bowser can also remove any status boosts that you or your partner have in effect (including Water Block), so I always wait until after Bowser shock waves to put up a new Water Block, that way I get full use from it.
    Finally, since Bowser heals three times, you need to get his three heals out of the way before you can finally take him down. When he heals is dependent on your percentage of your maximum HP vs. his, so I try to bait him into healing a couple of times. Until he gets all three heals in, I try to conserve my FP a bit.
    For partners, Watt is the strongest member damage-wise, as she can deal 4HP using no FP. The next good bet is Goombario, who can deal 6HP with Ironbonk.

    It's always fun to come back to this video. I wish TTYD had a Master Quest, too.

    I can block everything except the shockwave. The timing is so odd. And it doesn't make it any easier considering the glitch where Bowser is closer. Aghh. I'll get it here soon. The battle is long enough. After the third heal is when you really really need to make sure you block that attack. You can slip up maybe a few times beforehand, but after that and his HP below 150.. you are toast.

      Apparently it is possible to double-block the wave, but you have to hit the A-button very fast in quick succession. I created a save state right when the attack starts to practice double-blocking it, even then it was still pretty hard. I think part of it is that you're not accustomed to hitting the button really fast in succession in this game, unless you're mashing to charge up an attack. I only focus on getting the partner block to work, the attack is relatively weak on Mario, my trick was to just delay the block a split second from when you would block it as Mario so that it would block for the partner instead.
      Blocking the attack for Mario doesn't do much, even if you do block it, it will still remove any boost you have on Mario (Jump/Hammer Charges, Turbo Charge, Water Block, and even Cloud Nine in the original game).

      Is there a set amount of times he heals, or does he just have a chance to do it every single time throughout the fight?

    What happens if you use Zap Tap?

    • @sonicdoommario
      @sonicdoommario  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      There's a safeguard in place for that one, the first time he gets zapped he'll tell you that he's "switching his tactics up", and his combo attacks will start with the fire breath (which isn't a direct contact move) and then the claw/jump.

      @@sonicdoommario wait is that worse? What difference does it make if he attacks different ways?
      Does he still take damage?

    • @sonicdoommario
      @sonicdoommario  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bryanc1772 The difference is that the flamethrower doesn't directly contact Mario, so it wouldn't get broken up by Zap Tap if the flamethrower is used first. Since Bowser's claw/jump attacks directly contact Mario, Bowser gets shocked and his attack combo is broken up, stopping him from using the flamethrower that turn, practically halving the damage Mario takes from the combo.
      I'm not sure if he still gets hit from Zap Tap afterwards, it would have more of an impact on his claw attack, since he uses that three times and it could still block the 2nd/3rd claws from being used.

    What emulator do you use for this game?

    Is there a difference between Pro Mode and Master Quest or are they the same mod? I’m not sure…
    If the creator is here, I mean no disrespect.

      Master Quest was kind of built off Pro Mode, some of the things in Pro Mode (the boss rematches, the remade Dry Dry Desert, etc) were retained in Master Quest, but Master Quest has far more balance and difficulty changes than Pro Mode and has its own exclusive content (a dungeon you can access postgame, a Pit of 100 Trials, etc).
      The biggest thing Pro Mode does difficulty-wise is a blanket double-damage dealt from enemies, while Master Quest largely modifies the stats of each individual enemy (and in most cases, their AI) to bump up the difficulty. Pro Mode was never really finished, and the new content kind of runs out by midgame, while Master Quest is more finished in that regard.

    so, he heals everytime you heal too?

    • @sonicdoommario
      @sonicdoommario  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      He heals based on your percentage of HP remaining in comparison to his. If your HP% is 20 or more higher than his, he has a decent chance of healing

      @@sonicdoommario this guy healed himself 4 times always at 60-90 hp ... giga bowser is bonkers

    • @sonicdoommario
      @sonicdoommario  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Flashdog97 He heals three times for 80HP each. The first half of the fight is me getting to use his three heals without using too much of my resources. When he's below 150HP, he's below 75% of his maximum HP (200), so if I have 95% or over of my maximum HP during that time (the 20% difference), there's an increased chance he heals. You could keep your HP low to avoid him healing, but with the amount of damage he deals it's pretty risky to do.

      I feel with you having 55 HP then I think a safe area would be around 25 or so HP as Bowser seems to not do enough to take you down with his moves at around that amount.
