The Fox Float DPX2 is a great rear shock! I’ve been asked a handful of questions about how to dial in the shock, so here’s how I set up my own bikes!
Mojo 3 settings:
185 psi
4 clicks from max low speed comp
9 clicks from max rebound
.8 volume reducer
Ripley LS settings:
195 psi
6 clicks from max low speed comp
11 clicks from max rebound
.4 volume reducer
It was super interesting installing these shocks simultaneously on both my Ibis Mojo 3 and Ripmo bikes. Not just installing them- but testing them back-to-back on the same trail, too!
The Mojo 3 had a 2016 Factory Series Float rear shock- the OEM, stock shock. My Ripmo had a 2018 Fox Factory Series Float X2 rear shock. Swapping both of these over to 2019 DPX2s has been a very interesting change! Comparing the DPX2 directly to these two (very different) OEM shocks is framing up my next video- a DPX2 review!
Going back and forth from the short travel 27.5 bike to the longer-ish travel 29er was interesting too- the differences between the two steeds was immediately noticeable! The little 27.5 bike indeed felt like a skate board. Short, nimble, easy to get airborne, easy to drift through corners, and a hair out-of-control. Super fun and lively. The Ripmo felt longer, but on the trail, the bike was almost as fun and playful as the Mojo 3, just a little bit harder to get off the ground (it has more suspension travel) but not a slug by any means. On the flip side, WOW, what a confidence boost to have that much traction and stability! The bikes were both fun, just in different ways.

I actually just installed my DPX2 on my Cannondale Moterra from Jensen after adding my Fox 38 Factory, also from Jensen. My Santa Cruz Hightower came with the Fox DPS, this is also nice.

Nice walk through. I just picked up the dpx2 and put it on my mojo3 in the spring. It's been a really nice difference on there and it really saw me through some chunder in NC and fun out in Oakridge. Great setup.

Great video. I just installed a DPX2 on my Canyon Spectral. Once my kids' schedules allow I'll get to try it out. I've got the sag adjusted and the rebound. Need to ride to see if I'll need to add any volume reducers. Great video!

Got a DPX2 with my Transition Scout; after sag and rebound, my setup was pretty spot-on for the character of the bike that I wanted. Might have a click or two of LSC, but I'm a pretty light ~135lbs riding weight so I can get away with it.
Great tip on rebound. I've heard rolling off a curb but never while sitting.
Thanks Brian! CEO of Ibis gave me that tip 10 yrs ago! I used to just set it as slow as I could before it'd start packing up, now I'm going a little faster since compression damping works so much better than it did BITD.

I have to say, as much as I loved this upgrade from RS Deluxe to FOX Factory DPX2, when I put the Cascade link in my Stumpjumper THAT changed everything dramatically--much more than expected. I noticed clearly that the DPX2 performs differently, better and more responsive, in all 3 positions. The Cascade link IMPROVED the shock and how it performs. I'm getting the exact responsiveness and progressivity that I was hoping for w/the DPX2, but much more since I installed the Cascade.
I know they're not designed for every brand or model of bike, but I'd highly recommend for any SJ or SJ EVO.
DPX2 also required a lot more psi than I was expecting to need, but once I got that to no more than 25% sag the compression and rebound settings were also more responsive. I'm sure the Cascade has something to do w/that, but I really didn't change the settings much before I installed the link. Love the DPX2--perfect.

I bought a custom bike, Santa Cruz High Tower LT with Fox Factory 36, DPX2 rear shock.
Shock systems are are as followed: FOX 36. What worked best for me are the following: High Speed Compression - 10 Clicks to the Neg side, Low Speed Compression - 11 Clicks to negative, Rebound - 5 Clicks to Negative.
DPX, 5 clicks to the negative. PSI around 190.
I have two trails locally that I can test my set up to determine if it is dialed in or not

Great video, I can't wait to see what you think about it after more time on trail. Mine came with my Trance Adv.1. Superb feeling, very sensitive. I think I have to put it a little firmer, currently 30% sag but 25% will be better... keep bike a bit higher and maybe avoid some pedals stroke. I haven't played with the LSC adjustment yet, full open for now, need to t'check. Really happy with this shock!

Some of the components had arrived and the rest are slowly arriving. The last to arrive will be either the frame or groupset which will be in the 3rd/4th week of September. My first bike build project.

I've got the dpx2 performance elite on my altitude... because I have no idea what i'm doing... all I know is that it feels BEST for my riding style and trails completely wide open on compression and rebound (face palm!) I like how fast and playful it is... I feel like it came stock with a slower tune, so all the way open works...
I originally had the tiniest volume reducer in there.. didn't like it, so I put in the largest... hated that... and have fallen somewhere in the middle on volume reducers...
I'm going to have to try out your setup tips to see if I could benefit from a slower rebound, and a little bit of low speed compression (3mm hex inside the red knob).

Running the DPX2 shock on my HD4. Came stock from Ibis. But it's the performance model, so no low speed adjustment.

AMAZING RIDING (man I wish I could ride like that!) and excellent, easy tips for knowing the impetus for each adjustment. I have a DPX2 rear shock that came with my 2018 Rocky Mountain Instinct BC Edition. If you listen to Fox (or watch their service vids), they recommend you remove the shock and vice it before replacing volume spacers, but I see you simply do it while it remains on the bike. Thats fine to do?
Thanks man! Yeah I think it’s fine to do it as I did in the video, Fox might have other advice and I’m not a Fox employee or anything. This way of doing it has worked for years though.
Added a dpx2 to my Ripley LS. It definitely “rips” with the beefier rear shock and still climbs great. But I’m still dialing it in so this was super helpful, since I am new to tinkering with my suspension. Have you tried a dpx2 on your Ripley?
I have a 2016 Ripley LS, and I just bought a 2021 DPX2. Can't wait to install it and see how much it transforms my ride over the DPS that came on it! Did it make that much of a noticeable difference on yours?

I would think so for sure. I'm 185 lbs, I've added a volume reducer and I'm about to add another one, hoping that I can get my Ripmo to stop bottoming out but still feel plush.
Bracketing: Works for exposure settings on cameras, works for suspension too.

When you are adjusting the LSC with the 3mm hex, are you starting from the Firm position? If I turn mine clockwise from Open, the first 2 "clicks" are also turning the knob to medium then firm...
If you add volume spacers to your shock, do you put it to the psi you had previously when setting the sag? Or does the needed psi change to achieve the same sag once you’ve installed spacers?

In your settings you are writing that you set youre lsc "X" clicks from max. So, with "max" lsc you mean open not closed, right?
I'm getting an upgrade DPX2 for my enduro bike from my local bike shop, with a remote lever fitted due to shock placement. I think I'll start with the largest volume space and work backwards, as I'll be around 250lb rider weight with gear - does it make sense for my situation to start with the largest spacer?
I'm picking up my DPX2 tomorrow, which I ordered from a somewhat local bike shop (50 miles away), the reason being they were the closest Pivot dealer, and from talking with Pivot they said I needed to request their "special tune" DJ95, but when we ordered the shock, Fox said that's their factory tune, on the plus side I didn't have to pay an upcharge, and on the down side I could have ordered it sooner. Did you have to get a special "Ibis tune" or did you just go factory? I will probablly be revisiting this video a few times this weekend after I get mine mounted, one more question, did you just use the same mounting hardware or is the DPX2 different from the DPS? Looking forward to the review video.
Hey there Tommy! I'm not sure about the Pivot factory tune, but I do not have the custom Ibis tune, I'm just using a standard aftermarket shock and it's working great. The codes are different between the bikes, when I get a chance I should add the codes of my shocks. But honestly, I doubt the special factory tunes are all that different. Subtly different, sure, but Pivot and Ibis both have pretty standard requirements for the shock. Not sure on the hardware question, trying giving Fox or Jenson a ring there!
Hello, I have the same damper myself and I do not know how to set the LSC too well to be good, and then know that this is the optimal setting? I weigh about 65 kg, I have 150 psi (30% sag) and I never got a suspension but around 90% were several times. rebound full open 3 click to close

When you adjusted you rebound on that small curb, did you adjust just the LSR or HSR?
Hi Jeff! great vidz and lots of good info, keep it up. i have a question about the DPX2 sound, did you experience any unusual noise for this shock? i've read a lot about others complaining about the noise this shock makes and it seems Fox Service people says this is "normal" for this shock since they are using a different viscosity for the damper as compared to other older Fox shocks. would appreciate if you can comment on this.
Hi Errol, my DPX2s all sound like a normal shock, which means you can hear some of the fluids moving as it compresses. If the shock is working fine then I wouldn't worry about it.

I have a 2017 dpx2 elite but do not have the 3mm LC insert? There is only a torx slot in middle of 3 pos blue knob, does mine not have the 3mm LC setting?
Great info JKW. Like the new logo btw. My SC Bronson came with this shock. How does one know what the initial sag measurement should be? Is it different for each bike?
Thanks Joey! Sag is different for every bike, it is usually referred to as a percentage of total shock stroke, which is tricky since you need to know how long the stroke of the shock is. Jeff Kendall-Weed thanks Jeff. I always just did the 30% by eyeball method. I will check out the link and get the exact measurement. Been working on dialing my suspension the past few weeks, so this really helps simplify it.

Too much equals to too firm ;)
Not all dpx2 have a compression screw, mine just holds the blue ring on. I only got open, trail and closed positions.

Nice video ! I have couple of questions for you and I hope you can help me out. I got my Ripmo 3 months ago. How much do you weight? The reason is because I’m running 160 PSI on my DPX2 to use or maximize the travel but not to the point that I’m bottoming out. I’m 175 lbs with gear. Also, What tire pressure are you running front and rear and what tire size are you using 29x 2.5 front and rear? Thanks in advance!
Hey Dennis, thank you! I weigh about 160 lbs and my back is pretty heavy. Man I had to put a lot more air in than ya, and STILL had to add a volume reducer! Feels pretty spot on with the 195lbs psi and the .4 reducer for me. I'm running ~22-24 psi in front and ~24-26 psi in the rear, with old WTB Vigilante 2.3 tires. Thanks man!

Awesome video Jeff and even better riding! Interesting you did your sag whilst standing and not sitting. Do you have any recommendations and or pointers for setting it accurately? I assume since you're mostly out of the seat you decided to conduct it this way and would set it up seated if you were to crank out more miles am I right?
Lastly, is there any other method for setting up the fork's rebound other than the open palm on the grips and pushing down hard and having the tire stay put on the floor and not bounce?

Hey Miguel, thanks for the note! I've always ended up happiest with fork rebound a hair faster than rear shock rebound, as that will keep my bike a little slacker and more planted. I've always gone off feel, but always do use some quick bracketing to make sure my "feel" isn't crazy off!
I was also wondering about this. Jeff- since you set sag standing at 14mm do you have a bit more when sitting? I always thought it made sense to set sag in the attack position.

Hey Tom, I leave the shock wide open for all set up. And for 90% of all riding, as well.
You can give the DPX more mid-platform support for jumping and snappiness right?
Yes, with the low speed compression. Too little and it'll cycle the suspension when you need some support, too much and it'll lose traction and ride kinda harsh. Use bracketing and repeat a test section of trail to dial it in!
Very useful. Now, if you could tell me the perfect sag for the Sentinel with the DPX2, you'd be most helpful!
Haha thanks Lionel! I googled your question and found this: They suggest 18-20mm of sag, so I started at 19mm. It bottomed violently multiple times on my normal trails and also felt like it got hung up in the rough sections. I went up 20 psi in the shock and it made the rear of bike hold up in the turns and stay on top of the bumps better than the previous setting. My sag is now 16-17mm. After these changes, I've never had such a stable ride from a bike. It also goes without saying it helped the climbing performance, too.

Transition has some useful tech docs for all their frames under Support -> Bike Archive -> [your frame] -> [Frame Manual].pdf. Good stuff to download for future shock setup, required pivot bearings and torque specs, etc.

You probably already have the answer to this..but for my dpx2 performance elite (black...not gold Kashima)... The 3mm clicks of compression only affect the open setting 👍🏼

@@ambermojo4 - the mid and firm position with the lever will bypass the low speed compression setting with the 3mm hex.
When you're in your fully open mode, that's where the 3mm bolt will adjust the low speed compression...
Some of the dpx2 shocks that are lower tier don't have the 3mm adjustment in the open... the performance elite version I had did have the 3mm low speed compression adjustment for the open position. on my current bike, I just have the performance version, not "elite".... and there's no 3mm hex for LSC...it's just open, medium, firm.
sometimes if the lever moves too easily, while in the open position i would hold the lever in the open position while i used the 3mm to adjust either way.

No, unfortunately not! That was a custom design to commemorate the old graphics guy after he passed in a tragic car accident. Sometimes WTB does sell custom stuff on their site tho!

Why did you use 2 different sag measurement for each bike?
How often do you make these adjustments?
I'm thinking about getting a DPX2 for my HD3, which has a similar leverage curve to the Ripmo. Ibis says that a low compression / medium rebound tune is best for the HD3, but that info is from before the DPX2 existed. Do you think that a M/M tuned DPX2 would have enough adjustability in the LSC to work well for this bike?
Hey JR, if you are >150lbs or an aggressive rider then the stock DPX2 will be fine. I have a stock Factory series DPX2 and I love it- I even added some volume reducers to make it ramp up more. If you want super crazy plush, then a L/M would be better, but I'm quite happy with the M/M.

Hey Gavin, thanks for the note! I haven't had a moment to chase the differences between my DPX2 and the stocker, but I'd say the X2 is not a necessary upgrade for most on the Ripmo.

Great tips. Do your dpx2s make any noise when returning from compression? Mine makes almost an air sucking sound as it returns from being compressed. Fox says it’s normal but I’ve never heard a shock make this before and I wonder if air got into my damper.
mine is the same and i adked the same question. what psi are you using? they told me it's more pronounced when it's high. i'm 75 kg and for the correct sag i have it at 230 psi
Hey Brendan, mine doesn't make much noise, though I can hear the oil a little bit. My X2 shocks all make TONS of noise though, but they have tons more oil (and air) inside.
Mine also makes this noise sounds like it’s cavitating. Only 2 rides in on it and been doing it from new. I’ve dropped the dealer an email with vid of the noise so will see what they say

Is bottom out really at the end of the shaft or just after the kashima writing?
Depends on your bike. Some designs use a full stroke, others will only cycle part of the stroke. Go to the manufacturers specifications page for your bike and see what sizes stroke the shock is, then measure accordingly.

Hey Tommy, that sounds like it could be correct, you might want to get the shock revalved to offer more rebound damping.
