How I compare the Fox Float DPX2 to the DPS and X2!!!

  • Quick disclaimer: I am sponsored by both Fox and Jenson!
Check out the Fox DPX2 shock at Jenson USA here: bit.ly/JensonUSA2022JKW Anything you purchase while at Jenson will help keep my channel supported. Thank you!
Let’s hit the trail and discuss this thing! For context, I’ll be comparing this to the Fox Float X2 and to the Float DPS.
Climbing: riders may set the blue compression adjustment lever in either open, mid, or firm settings. Fully open is often the best setting for my Ibis bikes. On many other bikes, the mid-setting is great for trail climbs that aren’t too technical, and firm is great on pavement or gravel.
The DPS has the same type of adjustment, and I’d say the DPX2 loses nothing to the DPS on the uphills. The big X2 has a climb switch, so it’s either way firm or fully open. The open is great on bikes such as the DW Link equipped Ibis models, where minimal damping is required to avoid bobbing. However, on bikes with poor pedaling characteristics, the X2 will present some challenges by not having a mid-damping adjustment. I’d say the DPX2 is the best all-around option for a bike that needs to perform well up hill as well as downhill.
On flatter sections of trail that require a lot of pumping to maintain speed, the DPX2 feels great. The volume adjustment is key for getting this right. Since the DPX2 has a larger volume than the DPS, it will require a little more tuning to dial in the correct mid stroke support. With the 10 clicks of low speed compression adjustment the shock can be fairly precisely dialed in to provide enough support for this type of riding. The DPS only has three clicks of adjustment, thus limiting riders in comparison to the DPS. The X2 is a different beast, and I honestly prefer the DPX2 over the X2 for most of these flatter sections of trails. The 2018 and older versions of the X2 require a bit more of an impact to move the shock, and they feel like they are valved more firmly. This can be great on aggressive descents, but it can be a little harsh on regular, flatter trails.
Descending: Let’s break this down into three categories: cornering, jumping, and smashing.
Cornering: the DPX2 corners great as well, and those 10 clicks of damping adjustment should provide a precise enough adjustment to avoid an overly harsh feeling for even the lightest of riders. The X2 can be a tad over damped for really light riders, but it’s not a huge issue.
Jumping: a good shock for jumping has a consistent feel, meaning no surprises on steep lips or on flat landings. Beyond that, it needs enough high-speed compression to keep from bottoming on both the take off and the landing, and enough progressively to similarly avoid bottoming. The DPX2 does great for this. The little Float DPS lacks high speed compression adjustment and can therefore bottom on both take offs and bigger landings. The X2 jumps great, and has plenty of adjustment. However, there is the possibility of adjusting the X2 to be too firm and creating a mushy feel that’s hard to get off the ground.
Smashing: I have not pushed the DPX2 to the extremes of temperature, meaning the longest descent I did was only about 2100 feet, or 700 meters. For something truly long and gnarly, the X2 will always have the advantage. Not only can it be dialed in very precisely, but it has much more oil volume than the DPX2. The little DPS can overheat pretty quickly. That overheating is caused by tons of really aggressive hits forcing that small amount of oil through the damping orifice really quickly.
In conclusion, the DPX2 is a great all-around shock. I would recommend it for anyone who considers themselves a trail or enduro rider. The DPS is indeed lighter, and still feels great in many situations. The DPS is cheaper as well. For someone riding more rolling terrain, on a shorter travel bike, and happily using a 34 or 32mm stanchion fork, the DPS will be just fine.
For someone who primarily is concerned with downhill performance, and who needs that high speed rebound adjustment, then the X2 is the way to go. If I rode bike parks a ton, or if my bike was real long travel, then I’d stay with the X2. On my ~150mm down to 130mm travel Ibis bikes, the DPX2 is an awesome shock, and I would gladly recommend it to any of my closest friends.

I find the same results as you with the DPX2 while climbing. I have the current rendition of the Pivot Mach6 Carbon with the DW link suspension. I climb in the open position and it really does a good job with hardly any felt bobbing in the rear.

Got this shock on my HD4. One thing to note is that it takes quite a bit more PSI than a 'normal' shock to set sag properly. Normally you'd go geared up rider weight in PSI which would be 180 for me. I had to put in over 200 psi, and yes I cycled the shock every 50 psi per the manual. Once dialed though I'm with Jeff, this shock is pretty awesome, though it should come with the volume spacer kit stock.

Great review and comparison. I tested the DPX2 head2head with a Topaz T3 on my ION - 15. The DPX2 seems more controlled, but also a bit harsher. The air chamber tuning on the topaz, together with the really plush initial stroke made me keep the Topaz for further experimenting. Both shocks have a good medium setting by the lever, which just adds a little more LC relative to the "open" mode. (so the lever on both is actually useful for more than climbing). Would be great to hear your opinions about the Topaz.

nice job, looks like a great piece. now what's your opinion for the people who do mostly slow speed tech. where i live avg trail speeds are 5 to 10 mph with techy rock gardens that require constant pedaling.. perhaps that falls into the techy climb performance category you covered?

    • @Mjolnir125
      @Mjolnir125 5 ปีที่แล้ว

I switched from the DPS evol on a Hightower to the DPX2 and I actually find it works better in technical climbs. I can put it in the middle compression setting and it sits higher in the travel to prevent pedal strikes while still giving me traction. When I had the DPS in the middle mode it usually felt too stiff in the medium setting. It was fine in the open setting with higher pressure, but then it wasn't as good going down as the DPX2. The DPX2 weighs a bit more but I prefer it for climbing.

@@beesting987 I decided to just keep the factory DPS and instead replace the fox 34 fork with a 140mm rockshox pike ultimate, which is probably better bang for the buck if you had to choose just one. Adding the DPX2 would probably add more support on long and fast chunky descents. If this what you're normally riding tho, it makes you wonder if you might be better off just getting the Ripmo instead.

I think he means 2019 X2 - changes happened from 2018: increased allowable pressure, token volume, bump stop. Versus 2016, the 2018 X2 would have a lower pressure max (250psi) and different token system/volume, plus hex key to keep the air can from rotating off inadvertently.

Eh gotta disagree there... The float X2 lockout totally sucks. Almost does nothing at all. Yes, after A year and a half on my Nomad... I randomly test rode a Hightower LT, the DPX2 is quite remarkable how form it gets. But the float X2 you can pretty much leave 'locked' 24/7 😂

I left my x2 locked for a descent today.. It was horrible! I don't have a clue what you mean 😂😂😂

@@Loosebirnieee guess you haven't owned a shock with a firm lock!
Just picked up new 21' float x2 in place of my factory dpx2. They claimed it was much firmer. Nope again!

Kinda disappointed I am having to send my dpx2 into fox due to cavatation. $180 dollars to fix it is a hard pill to swallow just over a year old.

The DPX2 costs twice as much as the DPS.

My fox float dps exploded at the bike park in epic fashion. Cannot recommend

Awe shucks Andrew, sorry to hear that! The DPX2 has been the most reliable of the Fox options for me. I'd say the competition (DVO, Rock Shox, Cane Creek, etc) are all similar in terms of reliability.

X2 is much better for enduro. If you need proof, Martin maes runs an X2 and he the best.

Drop playback speed to 0.75x and it's easier to keep up with him.
