4 Auto is for pavement driving. It's not meant for off-roading. I mean, you can, but you increase the chances of overheating the clutchs built into the transfer-case. It's the MP3022, in 4 Auto it's sort of like having an AWD mode.
That's where Jeep went wrong when they did that 4 auto mode, they should have went back to the old school mechanical Selec-Trac transfer case setup that was found in the XJ, MJ, ZJ, WJ, and the KJ....that system had a mechanical open differential in the transfer case, no clutch packs like today's auto mode transfer cases use. I wish I had a way to record some video footage with my Liberty between full time and part time modes, there's a huge difference in capability between those 2 settings that many people probably wouldn't realize. On a test hill, I found I'd spin a tire or a couple, couldn't make it up in full time, shift to part time and it would crawl up it with much less fuss....low range you could just about idle up the hill across the ruts.
Ok, so this thing is pretty well equipped. (understatement) But at $66K, it is a bit steep for me. Is it wicked and capable? Yes. Do I like this configuration? Yes. Vehicle prices are just getting insane. I fully understand that this is a highly capable, fully loaded off-road monster, that you can also daily, if you don’t mind the punishment, but it’s still crazy. There are very few manufacturers that have well equipped vehicles for a reasonable price still. Subaru comes to mind. With their most expensive fully loaded model coming in around 47 or so I believe. I mean the average transaction price for a vehicle now is over 48 which is nuts. And the problem is that the automotive media is trying to downplay it. I can’t tell you how many reviews I’ve seen of the new Land Cruiser being referred to as “affordable”. Lol are you serious? The base model STARTS at 56. Now granted, compared to the last available LC in the US which was around 80-100, sure, 56 is “affordable”. Just like the ADMs. As long as there are people out there who enjoy being ripped off and continue to pay this ridiculousness, they are going to keep charging it. Awesome rig, crazy capabilities, but 66K? Nah. Good review as usual though Ryan. And I will say that you do generally call out pricing when it’s atrocious. Anyway keep up the good work.
Specifically regarding a land cruiser, you have to remember that previously the land cruiser was only available for around $80-$90,000 in the US. So the new model is relatively affordable compared to prior Land Cruiser models.
@@drivingsports Totally agree. That’s why I sited that exact point in my comment. However, relatively affordable, and affordable are two completely different things. Which was mostly my point.
@@drivingsports It shouldn't be compared to the previous 200 Series though on any level. The 300 series is the successor to that model. I know you know this and were making the point about relativity, but it's a false economy that is lost on a lot of folks. If only they'd bring the 300 here although at today's vehicle pricing they'd have to somehow slot it in between the LX600 and the Sequoia which would put it in a weird spot.
A Subaru Forester Wilderness is on my buy list eventually....for what I do its all I'd need....a Wrangler would be fun, but the repairs, and expense, and cleaning after that fun isn't worth it LOL.
Being a Big Fan of Full Time/Auto 4WD I'm Glad to see Jeep is still offering it on the "Regular" Wrangler I had thought they had started limiting it to only 4XE models in 2023
The full time/auto 4WD would be nice if they would have kept it mechanical....I'm not sure how well that clutch pack would hold up in something like a lifted/modified offroad Wrangler....from my understanding that clutch pack is also used in part time mode, its just locked up rather than allowed to slip as it does in the full time/auto mode. That's also how the full time 4WD worked in my 2008 Ford Explorer. It didn't have a 2WD option, it was auto, hi, and low...but the clutch pack was the only coupling to the front axle even in low range the clutch pack was doing the work to get the power to the front.
@@wildbill23c I have a JEEP Full Time only system in my 06 Commander & I am very Happy with it It also includes a Locked 4WD Low Range Let me add this the Full Time System in the Wrangler is meant for on road Surfaces that can change from Slippery to non Slipperey and Back again For Offroad Dirt Surfaces I believe the 4WD High is the preferred Choice EDIT: The 4WD System in the Commander & the Newer Grand Cherokee's are the Quadra Trac/Drive Systems the Auto 4WD system in the Wrangler is a newer Version of Selec Trac
Would love to have this Jeep. I even tried to build this Jeep up at a Jeep dealership. Only way to get this specific Jeep Wrangler 2-door is with the 2.0 liter turbo 4-cyl. 3.6 liter isn't available. I'd rather have the Pentastar 3.6 liter V6. Hopefully they make it available.
Props to Jeep that it still offers front and rear solid axles. Even G wagon no longer offers those front solid axle. Great review on great old off road course. Greetings
I think all the other Jeep Lineup now has independent suspension front and rear....well the Gladiator and Wrangler line both are solid axle, but everything else has gone independent all the way around I think. My ZJ had solid axles, I believe the WJ was the last Grand Cherokee model with solid axles, the WK was independent front, and now I think they're independent at all 4 corners. Hmm, does the Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer have solid rear axles?
It would be nice if they saw the pressure from the bronco and other off-roaders and instead of going IFS, innovated to make solid axels better everyday drivers
Mmm mm mm. Coffee and the Rubicon review! About time man! lol. Love its capability, that's for sure. Not too hard on the eyes either. I wonder how the Bronco would do on the new course!
The new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X looks great, but even better those new trails, I'm excited to see all the different vehicles on it, personally I would like to see the new facelift F-150 Raptor R
Finally, a jeep on the channel! You need a tougher course to test a jeep, this was a bit of a joke. *Btw you should not use 4 hi auto off road, this can damage the system. 4hi should have been used. Also disconnect the sway bar as soon as you hit the trail, not on an obstacle 🤦
I love my two-door Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which I have modified to be even much more capable off-road with a lift, larger and whiter mud tires, a winch, metal inner and outer fenders, metal bumpers, onboard air compressor, etc., etc., etc.
Been enjoying the 2.0 in my 2 door willys in high velocity. Only issue seems to be a small small coolant leak but have 60K miles on it and its been reliable even through seeing mud and dirts regularly
I absolutely love the two door Jeep Wranglers. Are they practical? Not really. Are they fun. Heck yeah! Liking the Canary Yellow on that one too BUT.......... HOW MUCH?!!!!! 🤯 I've owned two 2 door and one 4 door. But when I did the prices were reasonable. This is outrageous! Oh and mine were all the Pentastar 6 cyl.
$65k is too much. That said, many will get $65k of fun by using the Jeep off-road. I would like a new Ford Ranger Raptop but they have dealers marking-up the price... for now!
I think the issue would be as with any pickup, the wheelbase, and approach, breakover, and departure angles will cause issues. The more basic 2 door Wranglers are quite capable as is because of their short wheelbase....trucks typically don't fare so well in those types of scenarios as shown in the video you lose traction and ground clearance too quickly.
Im perpetually confused at how 2 cars can be virtually identical techwise and hardware wise apart from the doors, yet people still think that a 2 door isn’t worth a the money.
@@Papershields001 I like the idea of two doors but I also have a family who could not fit in the back seat of the 2 door version. Having a jeep which effectively fits only two people, seems like a bad value for so much money, no matter how capable.
Couple things I don’t like after going from a JK to a JL is the electric power steering whine, and the return of the front axle disconnect. Other than that It’s a huge upgrade to the cheap plastic feeling JK. I feel like every part is more premium.
Ryan love your channel and the new course!! If you added the rollers slip test like tfl I think it would be a good addition! Personally I'd like to visually see the difference between the AWD traction control and the off road x.

Great video, and really love the Rubicon but have always worried about the reliability of the vehicle and hated the thought of always ending up in the dealer workshop…
Lockers are the cheat code. Just happens the Rubi Jeep has them. And frankly, pretty much anything with lockers can do those trails. And for a fraction of the price. Don't know how long they've had that 4Auto setting but good to see Jeep catching up with 30yr old Toyota Land Cruiser tech in terms of full-time 4wd. And yes, it is all the good things you said about it. Unlikely Jeep's version will last near as long as Toyota's given that I'm sure it's all sensor/software-based, but still. Good video and review. 👍
Have you driven a Jeep with that twin turbo I6 yet? Curious how they are doing as I haven't heard anything about them....then again they're putting them in $100k+ luxury Jeeps soooooo....there's that issue LOL.
@@wildbill23c I have this wonderful thing called an imagination. It lets me simulate how things will be even if they aren't right in front of me. I know an I6 turbo has higher performance than the current v6 and the 4xe hybrid system removes the slack.
I have a Wrangler Rubicon 392 and they have been known to burn the clutches up. I haven’t had any issues with mine yet, but 470 hp and 470 lb/ft of torque can be hard on the clutch packs. One thing you should never do if you want to save them is not go off-road in 4 auto, always engage at least 4 hi to lock the clutch pack up and save wear and tear.
No, saving gas matters on long off-road trips. My old TJ uses very little gas while wheeling, but my JL drinks gas when off-roading. I’ve had to get fuel canisters for the first time in 20 years of wrangler ownership for my long JL trips.
Ryan, I think it is a good idea that you try all the vehicles that have the option of 4x4 Auto to run all the courses like that first and then run again in the settings that you think are going to work best, to compare how the vehicles behave and see witch 4x4 Auto is the best and each Auto brand
The manufacturer's fuel consumption figures are determined in a standard, unladen vehicle with on road tires and no accessories that might affect wind resistance.

I just keep watching this video trying to keep my eye on the prize and push through.
@@drivingsports lol my 2014 honda CRV LX FWD with 3'' lift could do any of this crap js.
A Subaru Forester Wilderness is on my buy list eventually....for what I do its all I'd need....a Wrangler would be fun, but the repairs, and expense, and cleaning after that fun isn't worth it LOL.
This two door Wrangler Rubicon on 35” looks really good
For me this video really highlighted what all those off road features can do. Excellent job-really enjoyed it. cheers
Being a Big Fan of Full Time/Auto 4WD I'm Glad to see Jeep is still offering it on the "Regular" Wrangler
I had thought they had started limiting it to only 4XE models in 2023
The full time/auto 4WD would be nice if they would have kept it mechanical....I'm not sure how well that clutch pack would hold up in something like a lifted/modified offroad Wrangler....from my understanding that clutch pack is also used in part time mode, its just locked up rather than allowed to slip as it does in the full time/auto mode. That's also how the full time 4WD worked in my 2008 Ford Explorer. It didn't have a 2WD option, it was auto, hi, and low...but the clutch pack was the only coupling to the front axle even in low range the clutch pack was doing the work to get the power to the front.
@@wildbill23c
I have a JEEP Full Time only system in my 06 Commander & I am very Happy with it
It also includes a Locked 4WD Low Range
Let me add this the Full Time System in the Wrangler is meant for on road Surfaces that can change from Slippery to non Slipperey and Back again
For Offroad Dirt Surfaces I believe the 4WD High is the preferred Choice
EDIT: The 4WD System in the Commander & the Newer Grand Cherokee's are the Quadra Trac/Drive Systems
the Auto 4WD system in the Wrangler is a newer Version of Selec Trac
Would love to have this Jeep. I even tried to build this Jeep up at a Jeep dealership. Only way to get this specific Jeep Wrangler 2-door is with the 2.0 liter turbo 4-cyl. 3.6 liter isn't available. I'd rather have the Pentastar 3.6 liter V6. Hopefully they make it available.
That two door with the X package are suuuper capable. I would love one of these things
@@wildbill23c Grand Wagoneer also has independent at all 4 corners.
Great video! As a 2 door Jeep JL owner: Thanks for representing
The new Jeep Wrangler Rubicon X looks great, but even better those new trails, I'm excited to see all the different vehicles on it, personally I would like to see the new facelift F-150 Raptor R
Collison avoidance is awesome , saved me on several occasion !!!
Great review. Looks like you want one! I sure do!
I think the willy's with a manual, 35's and the turbo engine is the sweet spot for what I want. Jeeps get excessive quick with all these options
Right? My 98 Wrangler was $18k new. $66k is just stupid for anything that's not Mercedes
@@dragmorian6347 I'm a little late to seeing your comment but it's absolutely outrageous how expensive they've gotten!!!!!😂
I’m team 2.7l TT Bronco!
I'm team 3.0 inline 6 please. Sounds like both 2.0 and 3.6 seem to struggle to pass 100'000 miles.
$65k is too much. That said, many will get $65k of fun by using the Jeep off-road. I would like a new Ford Ranger Raptop but they have dealers marking-up the price... for now!
Great review
Great Work
Greetings from Chile 🇨🇱
I WOULD LIKE TO SEE A MODIFIED SUBARU FORESTER WITH A LIFT KIT AND BIGGER TIRES TAKE THE SAME COURSE
There's a video with his buddy's modified outback wilderness vs his 4runner, that subie wud do!
@@rockyklassen8978 seen it. the forester has better approach angles than the outback
As I understand the Subaru lift options are very limited to only a couple inches?
I’d like to see a bronco monster truck if they can be as modified as you like. But he’s talking about this Jeep how you would buy it.
It’s about time. I love wranglers. I can’t wait to buy one!
Amazing! Really an offroad vehicle
For nearly the same money, that 2 door Jeep or the 4 door Ranger Raptor? I would like to see how that Ranger Raptor does on that same course.
You sir, have the best job on the planet!
Ryan love your channel and the new course!! If you added the rollers slip test like tfl I think it would be a good addition! Personally I'd like to visually see the difference between the AWD traction control and the off road x.
Team 392 here. Got it for $70 used with 4500 miles.
I wonder if the full time transfer case locks or is clutch driven all the time
Is it as fun as the old cj5s? I had one of those years back as my first vehicle, loved that thing. Wouldn't mind something similar in these days, but... is jeep a good name these days?
What can take on that rubicon? Well I’ve got a 2 door Badsquatch bronco parked right outside.
This is a proper demonstration! Thanks much. Cheers from Tampa Bay🌴 100324
fabulous color; i didn't even catch anything being said while looking at it.
I'm team I6 twin turbo hurricane 4xe whenever/if ever that happens.
I was starting to wonder what happened to this course.
Hi,Thank you for the Video👌The Wrangler JL is a great Car,i'm proud to own an Jeep Wrangler Sahara Short "Made in USA"🖖
Wearing a shirt with a picture of a Bronco while reviewing a Wrangler 5:59
😂😂
I've done all this and more in a stock Suzuki Samurai on stock all season tires, way cheap more fun!
Have you experienced or heard of the Jeep 4 auto having clutch problems in the tcase like the GM trucks have experienced?
I have a Wrangler Rubicon 392 and they have been known to burn the clutches up. I haven’t had any issues with mine yet, but 470 hp and 470 lb/ft of torque can be hard on the clutch packs. One thing you should never do if you want to save them is not go off-road in 4 auto, always engage at least 4 hi to lock the clutch pack up and save wear and tear.
@@scorpio13617 That was always my understanding. I have had multiple GM pickups and even just in snow I tend to run in 4H.
2 liter turbo from Stelantis. What could go wrong.
My 2024 Willys 4 door 2.0 is amazing ( except fuel economy ! )
No, saving gas matters on long off-road trips. My old TJ uses very little gas while wheeling, but my JL drinks gas when off-roading. I’ve had to get fuel canisters for the first time in 20 years of wrangler ownership for my long JL trips.
impressive. very impressive!
Your yard is a lot of fun
Need to find a 2-door Bronco Wildtrak to try right behind this 2-door Jeep Rubicon X.
Man she’s a beauty in 2 doors!👌🥰👍👉❤️very impressive!!
Is the black portion of the top a bikini? I noticed it wasn't color matched to the rest of top. The reason for asking is I am thinking of purchasing a Jeep with soft top vs hard top, I live in AZ so really not needing a hard top. thoughts?
Just for fun, you should take the Crosstrek Wilderness on that course. Assuming it won't make it, it would be good to see the delta between the two.
That auto 4x4 is impressive
Thanks for this new video. Do you think you can test with a Jeep Sahara?
Sahara is a trim, not a model name. I'm assuming you mean Jeep Wrangler Sahara?
Can we get another Compass Trailhawk test on this new course? Be cool to see if it can do it where the Crosstrek Wilderness couldn't!
At a glance it looks like a Jimny. Damn I wish we could get those here!
Too bad you cannot order one like this right now. The Rubicon X is not available with the 35" tires and only comes with the V6 and manual transmission.
Let the contractor take that Ram around the course.
2 door Jeeps still the King!
Im team 4L straight 6
Nice bronco shirt
I wish I could have a job like this. I wish I could get paid to test out jeeps like he is.
Awesome. Love it
$65k sounds expensive BUT consider if you had to modify a $35k 😮Sport to be Rubicon X you’d be spending the same. There is a reason the X is expensive.
