He played a of drama roles before in TV so it's not like he wasn't playing heroic roles, but he often isn't the primary actor when there were other bankable names. he's more famous now because he was part of the old guard (though young at his time) that could still fight like this when big name actors like Jackie Chan and Jet Li are rotating out for health reasons. That being said, he's still not that major since the market favorite is Donnie Yen right now. That being said, he is known to play the "bad boy" or "hero with a history" archetype and is not really known for his comedic chops, so his ability to actually be a major leading man is limited by the fact that he doesn't have Yen or Chan's range.
This is what's amazing with these actors like Wu and Donnie; I first discovered Donnie as a villain then him fighting Wu here as a the protag this time. And then later on I find out there are movies where Wu is the protag. It's like a cycle :D
The second fight scene. Wu Jing has said on an interview before that because the director didn't wanna overcomplicate things and since the director knew both actors were trained martial artists, Donnie Yen and him were fighting unchoreographed. Of course, they won't out to kill each other but he did say that they were being hit for real (even if the weapons were blunt). So, any expressions of fear and pain during that scene were real.
@Hello World! it's semi choreographed. There are segments of the knife fight where it went full unchoreographed. You could tell the difference where those segments are if you have spent sometime practicing full contact combat sports. There are moments where donnie yen and wu jing hesitate striking in fear of counter attacks and when they just went apeshit swinging for few seconds. The element of chaos is what sells this fight scene
Yes, part of the fights were random, not choreograph. The director said what took days to shoot was done in hours in the same night bcoz part of the fight were "free sparrings" between two greats ... Wujing from China and Donnie Yen from Boston ( Donnie was send to Hong Kong in his pre-teen by his mother for getting into too many school fights ).
It’s fully choreographed, but choreographed with their own natural moves. They both introduced moves and would question the other as to how they would respond. So they built much of the fight scene based on how they’d naturally react to specific moves rather than a fight choreographer fully mapping it out. Thus, it looks more natural and specific to their personal styles...but it’s still choreographed.
From my personal viewing experience I say that this is the best fight scene in history. There are many that are more spectacular and longer and crazier. But the way this was shot, the actual duelist approach of the improvised clashes, the stunning choreography and performances....no fight scene has ever come close to this for me. Especially after seeing the BTS footage of how they filmed it and how much dedication and work went into such a masterful scene. And I love Donnie Yen films and all sorts of animes and action films, nothing comes close to this for me. Wu Jing's character is basically the sickest knife fighter who's ever lived.
@@zhangshuo517 Agreed. That's what makes this one so special, imo. Just two highly trained artists trying to hit one another. Outside of Norris and Lee in Return of the Dragon this is the greatest REAL fight scene ever put to film.

The reason that why this scene is so epic is because this is the real fight when making this(both of them were not satisfied when watching the first arranged martial arts). Donnie and Wu hired massagers after that.

Greatest weapons fight ever filmed in my opinion. Donnie Yen and Wu Jing at their best. Other countries - Thailand, Korea, Japan, Vietnam and USA now have choreographed some great fights, but I still think Hong Kong action/martial arts films will always be the Crown.
As old as Donnie Yen is, in a realistic fight, many people close to him have said, if he was serious he'd kill Jet Li. (Probably gassing him up. Yet, & still...) That's quite a statement. Some interviewers brought up questioning the comparison of Jackie Chan up to Donnie, and then proceeded to laugh at his humbling answer; as if they couldn't phantom why on Earth would Donnie respect his martial arts. Of course many have said Jet Li was tough too and made counter arguments, but have also said were there had been a problem in their youth... Donnie would of definitely been a problem to Jet.
First time watching a video from this channel. I don't know the name of the guy explaining the backstory, but he sure knows his shit! It's SO IMPORTANT to know the motivations of the characters and WHY they want to kill each other especially in fight scenes. Those who think the flashy kicks and stunts are all there is to it are missing most of the emotional candy.
Donnie Yen is a legit black belt in Karate, Muay Thai, Judo, master in spear, katana and other weaponry, Parkour practicioner, BJJ. And he's action scene choreographer, movie director and plays piano very well. Donnie Yen is a huge fan of Bruce Lee: the serie "Ip Man" is a tribute to Bruce Lee's master, Ip Man, who created his own style, faced tirany and hunger when Japan invaded China, and influenced a whole generation in Martial Arts.
Also, when preparing himself to play Ip Man (Bruce Lee's Wing Chun master), Donnie got a private training session by Grandmaster Ip Chun (Ip Man's son) in Wing Chun fighting style, there is a video in TH-cam of them training together.
don't know if you guys have seen tony jaa's tom yum goong but i'mma tell you the fight scenes and stunts in that movie is God Tier, one of the best I've ever seen..
