  • "Touch" and "go touch" are commands that I have transferred over to many tasks Harlow performs. "Touch" refers to a nose bump on my body while "go touch" indicates Har to nose bump a target (away from my body).

    I think you're a lifesaver, I have a puppy I plan to train as a service dog because of my chronic pain and illness. Right now I'm just potty training and manners. I find your videos are the most helpful. Thank you for making them for us.

    I love your training tutorials.
    QUESTION: You mentioned blue is the color dogs see the best. . . . I had done some research out of curiosity years ago and I had learned it was shades of pink, or, reddish more on the pink side.
    ..... I wish I knew where you learned about blue ! ?

    I am so thank you for these dog training videos. I have two dogs and each one has their special areas to help. One thing I can not figure out is how to teach them how to bow (with their rear staying up). Zoey is an Alaskan husky with a mellow heart, and Lucky is one now, a yellow labX crazy boy. He is extremely intelligent also, but that can sometimes make him question me. I need some helpful hints on how to teach Lucky to bow (your “Namaste” ) without his rear end going down also. My command I use is “bow”.
    Thank you so much! Already Lucky is good at getting my socks for me and knows a lot of the names of items to retrieve; although he sometimes drops things at my feet or tosses them to me. haha. I walk with a cane, so the touch command will be helpful! Looking forward to that! Again Jaquie, thanks! Joann in NH

    Thanks, this was nice and clear and precise without being overwhelming. What types of treats do you use? We have become aware of unsafe things in a lot of treats and was being educated by Dr Dobias on youtube on these things. We are concerned because we keep hearing how service dogs have such a short servuce life and I have seen healthy active dogs much older than 6-8 years of age, any thoughts or recommendations on this?

    I absolutely love your videos. I'm training my first service dog partially myself, but sometimes I can't work with him for a period of time and he seems to forget what we had down just a week or two before, or he's very stubborn and won't listen during some training sessions. I work extra hard with him to get him back on track, but loose leash walking, and heeling are things he just isn't picking back up, and the bigger he gets, the harder it is to take him out for practice when all he does is yank me around. Do you maybe have any tips?
    Much appreciated!

    I think these are going to be invaluable to me, thank you. I am at that point that I think a SD could enhance my life, but I can't afford to go through a program and pay thousands of dollars. In fact, I live on disability because of my chronic illness. My only other option is to acquire my own dog through the shelter or from local sources and train it myself (this will also help me train my other dogs who are pets and brats lol).
    I have been stressing about that possibility because I have only the most basic of training skills but I think your videos will help me a lot.
    If you don't mind answering a question...how did you get/find Harlow? Was she a small puppy or was she a bit older? Did you have to go through the preliminary stuff like house breaking before you could even begin training her to assist you?
    Also, how do you handle/interact with friends or family who don't like dogs or have allergies and won't allow her in their homes? Obviously, their wishes in their own private spaces should be protected, yet Harlowe's assistance is so very important to you.

    Another option for getting them to touch your hand is to put a treat in between your middle finger and your ring finger😁

  • @SamakaSRC
    @SamakaSRC 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    After you've mastered her touching the blue dot on the wall, do you then transition to moving the dot to other places around the house for her to go touch? Then transition to taking blue dots in public for her to go touch specific things? Eventually transitioning to no blue dot? I'm trying to figure out how I would transition from using the blue dots on the wall - to having this be an actual task without blue dots needed.

    If I am trying to train my pup how to touch/nudge persistently when I am beginning to experience anxiety (example: a shaking hand) would I use this method but have him touch a shaking hand with the blue dot on it?

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +Vanessa Gallardo I would simply have him "touch" your hand when you begin to shake it, without using a blue dot. The dot is more for targeting. Practice by shaking your hand, replicating as much as you can the way you shake when you become anxious, and have your dog "touch." Slowly phase out your voice command so the cue becomes your physical motion.

    Just found your videos. My pup is only 8 months old, so he's still just starting out and learning slowly. Do you have any suggestions on refining a touch so that it's only the nose? My boy has an annoying habit of doing his first touch perfectly, with his nose, and then he gets excited, and has a happy open mouthed pant going... Which for some reason causes his aim to be completely off, and my hand ends up inside his mouth every time! It's like he's trying to hit my hand with the middle of his mouth, rather than his nose. I do what I can to not react, not reward, reset, and try again, but he hasn't seemed to grasp it. He just gets more insistent and shoves my hand further into his mouth! LOL Which when you're trying to break puppy nibbling habits, is counter productive. So we've taken a break from training for it, since it's not one he needs yet, we'll pick it up again when he's more mature/less mouthy but any pointers for a stubborn puppy would be appreciated if I happen to need him to learn it sooner.

    I'm really excited that you started doing videos!! It would be really cool to see a video where you talk about some struggles you dealt with when you were first starting with Harlow. I am partially owner training my first service dog and there doesn't seem to be any real videos out there about the difficult parts of training and what to expect!!
    P.S. I was able to teach my dog touch using your method in a single training session. I'm excited to move on to funky objects with my girl.

    Do you use high value treats or kibble???

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Rachel Meehan Harlow uses kibble. If you need high value treat suggestions, I would go with Natural Balance food logs, cut up into cubes. But keep in mind, dogs don't magically start behaving because of a particular treat. It is the training and determination of the handler that makes the difference.

    You used the laser pointer for a while too, do you just like sticky notes better?

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Caroline and Chloe I also used a laser pointer! However, I found that the light was not strong enough to be seen (even by myself) when outside. So I prefer the blue dots, and eventually Harlow will no longer need them for targeting handicap buttons. The blue dots I use in the home are stationary.

    How often do you and Harlow train?

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Rachel Meehan We have training everyday. I can't give an exact number because so much depends on my health, schooling and other obligations on any given day, but I try to turn most things into a training experience. For example, we need eggs. Instead of having someone else go to the store, I opt to do so in order to get Harlow some extra public access training.
