Service Dog Tasks for Anxiety - Body Blocks

  • Learn how to teach your dog three service dog tasks to help mitigate PTSD, Anxiety, Panic Attacks, and more.
    “For people who experience anxiety in crowded settings the dogs can be taught to provide a barrier between individuals and the handler by blocking the handler on the front side or providing cover for the back of the handler. When teaching the dog to create a barrier between handler and other people, the dog is taught to stand in front of the handler by using hand targeting to either position the dog directly in front of the handler facing outward or across the front of the handler. The dog can either sit, lie down or stand in this position.
    With training the dog can “Cover” the handler’s back and prevent people from walking up too close to the back of the person and surprising them. The dog must not must not wander and must stay directly behind the handler. It is best to train this with a wall behind the handler, so the dog gets used to being very close to his handler. Then the handler says, “Watch my back.” or “Cover” as people walk by.”

    Funny how when I was younger I didnt understand why someone would need a service dog (other than the blind and deaf). Now I understand and I wish my mom would have recognized my disorders so maybe I could have had a service dog growing up. Would have saved me a concussion two years ago...but I blame myself for not getting proper help.

      don't blame yourself for not getting help. getting help means opening up and that's a huge huge step when we aren't really sure of "what/if anything is wrong." You may have been told to take more vitamins or sleep more or be less sensitive. after hearing this for so long, it's hard to trust "people". i still have a lot of things i need to realize about myself and those around me. thank you for sharing a comment I can relate to, I wish you the best with your health.

      Don't blame yourself, its not your fault. I'm 36 and last year figured out I have sever adhd and autism and got my diagnosis and medicine and therapy. I also blame myself at times but I realize I had no true way of knowing what was wrong with me and even got misdiagnosed as a 21 yro with bipolar disorder and took meds that eventually caused me to get arrested 3 times due to a loss of empathy and no ability to calm down. I finally got the correct diagnosis and do still struggle with my self esteem and taking care of things I need to. It's not your fault you didn't find out you have an issue as it's not your fault you have a disorder or disability.
      Hope I could help.

    I have GAD, or generalized anxiety disorder, and something that always messes with me if people standing behind me. I just freak out because a) I don't know what their doing and b) i can't hear them well enough and I'm always freaking out about people just watching my every move and judging me. When your dog does "Cover" all I could think about is how it would make feel safer knowing that there's someone(thing) behind me and I can know what he/she is doing instead of wondering and being to scared to turn around.

      It’s exactly the same with me. I think I would fee so much better if I had a barrier between me and other people. When I line up in the supermarket people constantly bump into me which makes me feel super uncomfortable. Especially when they get so close it’s almost rude.

    Ive been training my dog service dog techniques even though she won't become a service dog. I just do so as it is helpful with my anxiety and depression. She knows the commands very well but the issue is once the treats are gone so is her motivation though sometimes when i do go into an episode she will react if in the right mindset. I've used a lot of the techniques in this video only I've changed the names for my training. Block for me is to go behind me and the word Front is for obviously being infront of me. Cover is for dpt in my case. This video is really helpful 🖤🖤

    I had no idea I could get a dog to help me with anxiety I get being alone in public spaces, especially when strangers get too close to me. I knew they’d be able to help me with medications and panic attacks, but this would help me so much more with day to day stuff that is more subtle than stopping an immediate attack. This is a game changer.

    Sometimes I feel like I'm the service animal for my dog 🤣 Gonna teach all these to keep my boy in a safe distance when he's uncomfortable with people coming close. Especially when someone stops to have a chat he gets nervous and doesn't know how to act. I want to avoid people touching him in those situations, but I never figured out, how to get him that close to me so the bodyweight can tell me he's still fine behind my back. Using a platform will solve this in a minute! Thanks a lot for this and all of your Videos! Lots of kisses to Oak and Tucker

    I was trying to find out how to get a service dog for anxiety... Everything I read online is for medical ailments .. so not sure and also how can you purchase your own puppy to train as it grows for this? I have debilitating panic attacks and due to this can't be in public alone.. I would love to be able to be a normal adult and be able to take my kids to the park or go grocery shopping... Any info or a point in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

    I have some form of severe anxiety that prevents me from going into stores with lots of noise/scents/people
    I get extremely anxious every time i leave the house, ive tried to pinpoint the cause of it but the only thing i can think of is i get extremely anxious and panicked around alchohol and several years ago when i was 9 my mom got drunk and my step dad wasn't homr so i had to take care of her.
    She was just acting silly and wouldn't go to bed until she got sick so it wasn't even that bad but it still freaks me out.
    I want to ask a doctor about it but i just turned 15 and i don't know how to ask my aunt or mom to take me to a doctor to figure it out.
    I genuinely think some form of medication, treatment or maybe even a service dog could help.
    Im just scared to ask.
    I recently almost had a breakdown when we were in Khoals (the store im not sure how to spell it) i started hugging myself and freaking out, my grandma noticed and immediately told my great aunt we had to leave.
    We then went into a shoe store to find shoes for my great aunt and i just sat in a chair with my earbuds in almost crying with my head in my lap.
    I heard people around me saying is she okay and i heard my great aunt ask my grandma "Whats wrong with her?" Then my grandma said "she got overwhelmed in the store"

I decided to just train him until they pass a law that says you can have one in shops or with you at all times. I think they should have to maybe go on a course or pass a test to get a licence to prevent just anyone getting one. But so far you can only seem to get a dog ready trained from a charity. And you have to give it back when your done (if you can ever be done with PTSD it would be a miracle) there just doesn't seem to be anything to help others

    I wish I had a service dog. I have really bad anxiety and PTSD ( I really hate saying things like that) and I cant deal with people getting to close to me because of my PTSD, but then my anxiety drops me from telling them to move. I would like the service dog to be able to block them so they dont get too close, especially if they are yelling at me or something. And it would really help with anxiety attacks and it could also let other people know when to not approach me since I'm too scared to tell them. I dont think I'll ever get one because I'm too scared to tell anyone that I need one, or that I need any kind of help. Plus they wouldn't listen to me anyway. I dont know what I'm gonna do, I'll have to think of something I cant live like this.

She’s known what to do from the beginning. She is very small (16 pounds) and obviously a senior, so would you recommend any other training methods based on her size and age? My only issue is I’ll have to bend down to give her a reward, which may distract her (she does have a bit of adhd). Also how should I go about her wanting to visit with other dogs in public while she’s on the job? She is very good about sending my tension, but will often exhibit Little Dog Syndrome and go into protect mode if she notices negative body language.

    How do you train your dog to stop you from doing nervous habits (Like chewing nails, scatching, etc)

    • @triplesixsinner
      @triplesixsinner 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For scratching I take a treat (make sure they know you have a treat), put it in my palm, then I scratch my leg. They should nudge you trying to get to the treat. When starting out scratch for 1-2 seconds then give them the treat, you can add time as the dog gets better. After doing this for a while you can scratch without the treat in you hand then give them the treat and soon no treat will be needed.

    Does anyone know if you can use this for cats? I'm training my cat to be an ESA for my depression and Axeinty.

    • @blancobunni1171
      @blancobunni1171 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cat can be trained to do certain tasks, however in your case an ESA does not need to be trained. You must first receive a letter from a therapist confirming that you need an ESA. Then when you have acquired one, you can train it however you like. The difference is that a service animal is trained with a task, because it is for someone with a disability. A cat is not recognized as a service animal. So really in short, it is up to you if you want to do this training with your cat. It really isn't necessary for your depression and anxiety, but if you think it will help, you can try.
      A side note. This training seems specific for social anxiety, as ot is hard to function is society with extreme social anxiety. The dog learns these tasks to make it easier to avoid a panic attack when someone approaches, such as the block technique. In reality there would be no reason to train your cat with these, since it is not allowed in public places.

    So i have really bad social Anxiety. I don't like being in crowds, i can barely go to stores beacuse of it, I can't talk to new people and being in a room with even 4 people will get me anxious. Can i have a service dog for that? I've been told they are only for people with disabilities.

    I have a therapist, and have quite a bit of anxiety thats constant- especially in public. I want to bring up to my therapist that its comforting to me to have a person doing what the dog is (my sister will place her hand on my back, or hold my hand or arm), but my anxiety prevents me from mentioning it. Im not sure if i would even qualify for having a service dog- once again, anxiety. I have constant mental breakdowns too- atleast multiple times a week. Do you think all this would be worth mentioning to my therapist, along with the thought of a service dog? My parents listen to her suggestions more than mine.

      unheoly I would definitely discuss with your therapist and see if a service dog is the best option for you. Having a service dog isn’t always the best for everyone as it brings a lot of public attention and is a lot of responsibility. But definitely talk to your therapist to see what may be the best for you!

    • @luvbvnny
      @luvbvnny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Taryn Hitte but the thing Is that with esa animals they can only do so much.. as someone to lives with severe anxiety having my dog around at home wouldn’t really help me.. however there are psychiatric service dogs and if your mental illness is bad enough your therapist can prescribe one and you can greatly benefit from it

    I don't know if I have anxiety..whenever my teacher calls my name I start to panic and i feel like everyone is looking and laughing at me so I start crying but no one notices, I get so scared and I feel like my heart is going to pound out of my chest and I always pick my lips and shake my leg and I sometimes have breakdowns when I remember my sister because she died in a car accident and I also had a dream that I got a service dog..i don't know what to do, I also blame stuff on myself like "it's my fault mom and dad left each other" can you please tell me if I have anxiety or something, I'm sorry if this is really long but please answer quickly and what I should do, I'm 12 years old and I feel like if I tell my mom she will think I'm going crazy and please tell me if I need a service dog or not

    • @Whiskeytoller

      Carla SanCam hi Carla, thank you for being so brave to comment here! Service dogs unfortunately do not cure anxiety. I would definitely bring this up to your parents and I’m sure that they will try to understand. The best next step would be to talk with them and possible look into a therapist or doctor who can help you find what’s the best solution for you. ❤️ good luck

      @@thepizzainthebackofyourfre9615 barking usually has some sort of motive behind it. So once you determine the motivation, that's where you can determine how to work through it! However, all dogs are going to bark at one time or another.
