  • This video details what it's like to fly with a service dog, complete with footage from Harlow's very first flight at nine months of age. I include all the need-to-know' s, how-to's and what-to-do's I can think of. Hopefully this video gives you some insight, especially if you are preparing for your first flight with a service dog!

    Great tips! I do want to mention that people with disabilities are allowed an additional carry on for meds. ALL meds should be carried on the plane and never checked. So you are allowed to have them in a separate carry on if need be. Last year we went to Orlando for a week so I needed to pack my nebulizer, and I always pack a month of meds, just in case of emergencies, etc. So I had a personal carry on, and then my medical bag. It's nice to have that additional room if you need it.

      Kelley Hornberger Thank you! I didn't know that! I know you posted this a while back so I don't know if you'll answer but, I have multiple "invisible" illnesses that have caused me to be disabled but I'm not in a wheelchair or anything like that. What do I need as proof that I'm disabled to go through the disabled line??

    I saw someone getting their service dog patted down in security and the dog kept licking the security guards hands and thought he was petting her!

      Try the web site Blackdogsrule.com. They have 2 service dogs for their son, who has type 1. They also have a Facebook page.facebook.com/GuardianAngelforQuinton/?fref=ts
      They give a lot of info on training and maintaining a diabetic Alert Dog. You can contact them and they will give you advice

    Just wanted to add that you don't ever have to take your hands off your dog at any time throughout the screening process if you don't feel comfortable doing so. You can walk through the metal detector together, and you can also offer one hand at a time for the explosive residue swab.

      Yes, but it is easier send them through first, Usually TSA removes all of their dogs from the area if there is a a service dog. So sad now Harlow enjoying life as a puppy.

    SO MUCH GREAT INFO! I'm really glad you mentioned the meds, I always use an organizer, too, and I can totally imagine myself forgetting about that!
    Not planning on flying anytime soon, but this is so wonderful how you broke down all of what happened, I've always been fearful about how that all works, etc, and admittedly, my pup and I have plenty of work to do before we are ready for public access type stuff even, but it's so great to see what all the steps are like, since most things I'm anxious about are just because I have no idea what to expect!
    Thank you so so so much!

      As far as I know, you are not required to answer those questions.
      A business can only ask if your dog is a service dog and what task does he perform.
      Then again, its a free country and it will not stop people from inquiring.
      I really don't have a problem with the questions, but I don't like people wanting to constantly touch my service dog all the time. Had a guy literally go straight into his face once and my dog even has a "do not pet" patch on.

    My intrathecal pump always sets off metal detectors and when they pat me down they can feel it and always ask what it is then they take me to a secluded area to lift up my shirt which sucks. They have also made me feel terrible and almost give me an anxiety attack bc they ask why I have so many pill bottles and stuff. It's hard to travel for me and anytime I enter a federal building that has a metal detector I set it off and have to lift up my shirt to explain the bulge under my skin. I'm so glad that you have Harlow she's a good dog!

    Hi Jaquie, I am looking into an allergen detection service dog for all of my anaphylaxis allergies. I am currently reading all of the ADA and ACAA laws etc. The program I am going through is an 18 month program, therefore the dog would still be a "service dog in training" for quite some time. However I must travel by plane a lot and watched this video just recently. Had Harlow already passed her Public Access Test and was officially out of the "in training" phase or did you fly with her before her PAT and you were still able to fly with her even though she was still a "service dog in training"? I am currently working out whether or not I would be allowed to fly with a dog in training but enrolled in a professional program with me, before able to take the Public Access Test.

    I'm disabled and booked and notified air Canada of my situation. They put me right across from the restroom. Window seat (which literally had no window, just a wall) most claustrophobic plane ride ever. I asked for bulk head because of my mobility issues and was told they would keep charge me an additional $50. Does ADA rules apply to an Airline which belongs to another country but the flight originates in the US? I would assume that ADA laws do not apply. Your thoughts?

    Hi Jaquie! I have a quick question for you. I have a mobility support dog and I cannot walk independently without him. He is a large breed (5 year old Golden Retriever). Can they allow us to get a pat down instead of going through the detectors since I cannot move independently without him? Thanks

    • @tarananajaika
      @tarananajaika 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My advise would be to tell the airport before your flight (when getting tickets, when checking in) that you can't walk through the medall detector on your own. Either they will take your offer to get padded down or they will offer to get you through with a wheelchair for the security process.

    • @elijahlivingston155
      @elijahlivingston155 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Legally they cant ask you to separate from your service dog or take the dogs leash or harnesses off. Id suggest looking into airport gear that wont set off metal detectors but they will pat down you two if you set off the detectors.

    I know this video is from a long time ago, and I tried looking this up but was unable to find the answer: in there any extra (free) carry-on allowance for a service dog, or is it free only when it is checked?

    • @jaystorm3574
      @jaystorm3574 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      SnowySpiritRuby I believe so... My SD has saddlebag packs on her harness and they checked them but didn't count them as carry ons, I had two carry-ons already, a backpack and a purse but they airline didn't count anything on Sugar as a carry on. I would check with your airline to be sure

    • @ChronicallyJaquie
      @ChronicallyJaquie  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Avery Brown Nope, no one asked for a doctors note. No one questioned Harlow at all, in fact. As long as your dog is behaving, you should not have any problems! I would definitely find some buses to practice on, and I would also try to practice a 5.5 hour down stay at least once before the flight. Though, I am sure you will be surprised with how well your dog will do!

    I travel with the Ruffwear Mt. Bachelor Pad (medium size). It rolls up tightly in a small roll. I clip it with a D ring to my carry on backpack. It's a great way to make my SD more comfortable and give that visual and tactile reminder to my SD of where her space is and not to leave it. I leave her on the bed when I go to the bathroom on the plane and don't worry b/c of the strong reminder of where she is supposed to be.
    www.ruffwear.com/Mt-Bachelor-Pad-Dog-Bed?sc=2&category=17
    It doesn't take up any of my carry on space b/c of clipping it on the outside of my backpack. It's great for us.

    Just finding your channel in 2021...who was that dog beside Harlow on the plane? Anyone you know or just a random other service dog?

    Last time I was travelling I was with my ESA and they told me to put him in my lap. Now I have a Golden mix Medical Alert Service Dog the size of a small lab. Will they allow me to have her in my lap or only on the floor?

    • @ReadingisMagicTV
      @ReadingisMagicTV 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jensen Hammack I called Southwest and they said the service dogs can either be on the floor or in your lap. In my case, my dog is about 16 lbs, so holding her on my lap makes sense.

    How do I train my pup to let someone pat her down? She gets over excited and wiggles, and licks people and sometimes jumps.

    What happens if the service dog wants to use the restroom on the plane? where could it go? (im curious)

    • @heartfullbutterfly314
      @heartfullbutterfly314 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      dc5trust on the plane there isn't a place for the dog to go to the bathroom. There is however areas in airports that dogs can go to the bathroom. So they will have to go in between flights

    This is the first I've heard of needing a doctor's note for a psychatric service dog for a plane , can someone link the law/rule for that? I never found it anything like that when I flew with my ESA, I now have a SD and plan on flying next year for a trip.

    Quick question, are dog boots required? I am training a seven month old GSD and I never thought of getting him dog boots before.

    • @service_poodles
      @service_poodles 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jennifer Turner if your area is very hot or very cold it's a good idea

    • @MissaLVT
      @MissaLVT 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Jennifer Turner It's definitely not required but highly recommended if you live in a hot climate and your dog is going to be on concrete for an extended period of time. A good way to check if your dog needs boots is by placing the back of your hand on concrete that's been in the hot sun. If you're not able to keep your hand there for more than a few seconds comfortably then your dog needs boots. If your dog is only going to be out on grassy areas then he/she is perfectly fine without boots. Hope that helps! ☺

      Jennifer Turner if you can't comfortably put your hand on the ground, you shouldn't expect your dog to have their feet on the pavement for long periods of time. :)

    • @cloudyskyz2237
      @cloudyskyz2237 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      no, unless you need bulkhead seating, which costs more

  • @carolmcelheney7152

    When I booked my flight, I was told I had to book an extra seat for Ninja who weighs 120 lbs. We got window and middle seats on all 4 legs of our travel. Ninja may NOT sit in the seat! This is United, and I hope they don't take our extra seat away and boot us off the flight.

      Karen Jacobsen I will

    • @ipsurvivor
      @ipsurvivor 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      miranda h - not sure but the medical alert should classify your dog as a "regular" service dog and therefore no note required BUT PLEASE CALL THE ACAA IF YOU HAVE ANY CONCERNS... A note probably wouldn't hurt just in case but also you may want to go with what a disability lawyer tells you.

      Ege Akdora they really dont dogs can go for like 12-15 hours without peeing or pooping and always owners use the dog stops at the airport.
