Mother Gothel is probably one of my favorite Disney villains because they nailed her abusive and manipulative behavior so well that when you’re a kid u don’t see it but when you’re older it’s like woah. She’s probably the most realistic villain behavior wise cause there are a lot of parents who are narcissistic, manipulative, abusive, and gas light their children like her.
Gothel, Frollo (Hunchback of Notre Dame) and Lady Tremaine (Cinderella) are probably my favorite Disney villains, because they actually feel like real people you could encounter in real life. They are not that of kind of stereotypical dark/gothic villain, or that kind of villain with a sad tragic story you can empathize with. They're just selfish assholes, like the villains of real life. Anyone can have a jealous family member like Lady Tremaine, or a narcissistic mother like Gothel, or meet a corrupt/abusive politician/religious leader like Frollo at some point.

it’s fairly realistic as a person who grew up and is still dealing with abusive and manipulative parents when i was younger i genuinely thought that they were great parents but as i grew i slowly realized that the way they treated me was abusive and that they mostly manipulated me and most of those things i just completely ignored as a child so mother gothel and rapunzels relationship really shows the process and realization rapunzel thought that gothel was a good mom and was just trying to protect her but as she grew and put herself out into the world more (quite literally as she had never left that tower) she realized that the way she treated her wasn’t ok

"Her eyes are massive!" It's a character design thing. Big wide eyes make a character look younger and more innocent...or even cute, whereas narrow eyes make them seem sinister.
listen, the moment eugene cuts off rapunzel's hair and sacrifices herself has me bawling my eyes out every time i watch it - it's the ultimate selfless movie after starting out as selfish and shows how much he loves rapunzel. the whole last sequence in the tower is so good, and the hug when eugene pulls his face into rapunzel is just SO GOOD that it makes me feel loved as a viewer, which is really impressive for a movie

The power of animation: Neither the King or Queen have any lines. Yet we know EXACTLY what they're thinking! Frozen has its moments, but Tangled is still better, IMO.

Whenever Gothel shows Rapunzel any kind of affection, she actually showing it to her hair. By comparison, Flynn makes it a point to push her hair AWAY from her face.
4:54 There is a Tangled tv series, now. It heavily implies that Gothel was once a student to a powerful evil sorceress. This sorceress was also obsessed with the flower (among other things ;) the series was surprisingly amazing on delivering some nice lore!) So that's probably how Gothel knows of the flower and the song.

Wait I just noticed at the scene 8:39 before Rapunzel sang her healing song.. mother was kind of aged, and had gray in her hair. When Rapunzel sang extra fast it made mother more youthful again. (I cant believe i just noticed after watching the movie 50 times) But does Rapunzel know she is making her more youthful again and thats why she let's her brush her hair?
I think it’s lead on that mother Gothal has in fact informed her of her magical abilities (and the benefits for Gothal), I’m sure she uses it as another reason to isolate Rapunzel even more.
The part where she's holding her thumb out in front of her when she's painting is an artist's trick, where you compare sizes of objects versus a canvas. But you can use it for measuring other things. 👍
The reason Mother Gothel didn't tell Rapunzel about the stairs was to make her think that if she left, her mother would never go home. Another reason she didn't leave was a guilt trip of 'abandoning her mother'
I love this movie and you're easily becoming one of my favorite movie reactors! You're so funny and know how to enjoy a movie, even if it's a "children's" movie, it can still be enjoyed by everyone! What a true icon

Gothel lived in a kingdom called the dark kingdom. They knew a bunch of incantations therefore that's how she knew about to sing that specific song to the flower and activate it's powers.

Okay, as much as we all dislike Gothel, her hair is a 10/10. Like look at the detail in some of those shots. The little stray hairs, the texture of the curls, the shine. I've seen Tangled like 10 times but never really paid attention to the small details (granted, I sit much farther away from my TV than I do the computer monitor, so maybe that has something to do with it.)
And I'm not joking they literally called it Corona but the series 4 years ago said that it was called Corona but you know three years later that's just kind of a weird name for us.
My suggestions for animated movie reactions are simple, I love them but I call them "The Forgotten Movies Trilogy" cuz a lot of people forget they exist :) - Treasure Planet - Atlantis - Sinbad: The Leyend of the Seven Seas

Frollo is also a great disney villain! There’s most likely plenty of people in the world that are exactly like him, and it’s frightening.
