Foreign accent syndrome is usually related to some form of brain damage. Most commonly after a stroke, but also from head trauma, brain lesions, or even migraines. Facial surgery can be a potential cause. It's also more common in women for some reason. One of the earliest reported examples of this syndrome was a Norwegian woman who was hit by shrapnel during WWII and came out of it speaking with a German accent (which, considering the time, left her ostracized). And it's so rare (as few as 80 people worldwide have it), we don't really have a proper treatment for it yet, with speech therapy really being the only option. At the very least, it's usually temporary. When questioning people who had this condition about how long it lasted, they reported a range of 2 months to 18 years, with a mean length of about 3 years.

As a Brit, to me she sounds like a continental European whose learned English and lived a little bit in London, a bit in the West Midlands and a bit in the North. It’s a kind of hybrid of several of the many different British (or, specifically English) accents.
Yeah, I wouldn't have placed her as native British but I guess it's based on her perception of what a British accent is. Just as I wouldn't be able to pick out the difference between some American accents she's not picking up on everything that makes a British one.
I don't know man. People will do anything for attention. They pretend to have cancer and all kinds of diseases and condition. An accent in comparison is harmless. But who knows.
There’s nothing wrong having a British accent , or an Irish accent, or whatever. The issue is you suddenly aren’t yourself anymore. It’s like having your hair dyed without asking, or waking up left handed instead of right handed. A piece of you is disjointed from your perception of yourself. It’s not a “bad” thing, but it wouldn’t feel good.
@@Katie-B it's certainly not a posh accent nor a "neutral" TV accent, it rather sounds like some type of regional accent. It slips here and there but she could pass as a Brit in lots of places.

I knew an English lady who had a stroke and afterwards had a proper Italian accent. It was incredible, but terribly traumatic for her. She hated it. I never told her that I thought her new accent was better than her old accent. Before she sounded quite hard. The Italian accent was softer and melodic
I bet she’s just tired of strangers asking her where she’s from and then not believe her when she says she’s lived in Texas her whole life. I bet it’s also exhausting to have to put up with people who think she’s just “faking” it for attention. I don’t blame her for trying to get rid of it.
I spoke in strong accents uncontrollably (Australian, Irish, Russian, southern) after domestic violence and a lot of trauma. It was very strong and not in my control and subsided after healing from trauma.
There's another similar syndrome, if a person has studied even a little bit of a foreign language sometimes they wake up and and they can only speak that one instead of their first language and it takes them a while to regain their ability to talk their first language but it does come back. So I hope this lady has gotten her accent back by now if that's what she wants!

Dena Barton Nah, not being able to talk would be far more devastating. You can recognize your voice, because it's coming out of your mouth. It wouldn't be hard to adjust to it. Not being able to talk is far worse, and very related. If you can't talk, you would need a board or something to communicate with. You can't get someone's attention by talking to them anymore. You can't cry for help if you need it. Talking would take more time and energy. Laughing would be hard. If you just can't speak because your mouth wont be able to create the right gestures to talk, then it's pretty much the same.
She sounds nothing like a Londoner at all...& the second woman with the irish accent really if an actual irish person heard her talk they'd probably laugh at her.
Wow, that is interesting! I had a somewhat similar thing happening to me. I'm from Romania but I moved to England almost 8 years ago and my English didn't sound British at all. Anyway after a few months of living here I gave birth to my first child (vaginally),but I had a retained placenta and had to be given anaesthesia to have it surgically removed and I noticed that during the procedure I was speaking English with a very British accent. It's like I couldn't help it, it just came out so naturally even though I was unable to do that before. It only lasted for a few hours after the surgery though. It seemed weird but I didn't think much of it back then. I assumed that it was the drugs that somehow enhanced some part of my brain or something like that. Anyway, it's interesting to see that others got that as well, and even 'worse'.

Well, since she's not actually British, I wouldn't expect her to have an accurate British accent. Just a guess, it came from British movies or shows she's watched, and her neurological twist is relying on those memories. That's probably how she thinks a British accent sounds.

Adorable Princess Ikr
She sounds Australian

i know right! Like, oh yeah Mary Poppins had a Yorkshire accent didnt she looooooooooool

FeathersofDxhlia Yorkshire?, have you ever heard a Yorkshire accent?😂 she sounds nothing like us
Ellie Taff Yeah i studied in Leeds, she defo has a yorkshire sounding accent, maybe not Manchester or Leeds or your particular accent but it does sound somewhere in the midlands x
Am I the only one who wouldn't mind having a British accent? That would be kinda cool in my opinion.
I agree haha!!
nope! I was just wondering how I can get that? I would want an Italian off course :)
What british accent would you have theirs like over a dozen of them?
Well I have one... So yeah
Haha. Yes: over a dozen. Just like there's over a dozen cities.
0:55 i straight up thought the doctor was holding a concha in his hand😂😂
She sounds nothing like Mary Poppins...
As a Brit I can 100% say that she doesn't sound British. Maybe a bit northern but a lot Australian as well.
I agree
Im Australian and she does NOT sound Australian at all
No one wants her 😂
She sounds Kiwi I guess :P
Totally agree! I'm from Britain and I don't think she sounds British at all! She sounds different but not british
Still wondering how long it took and how many people were employed to think up the name of this syndrome
OutdoorLifeFamily no it isn't a joke. It is a real condition....
Goes in for Overbite surgery and comes out with an Underbite. I feel like she woke up feeling so different that it just naturally happened. How many times have you gone to do a British accent and the Jaw comes right out and up to emphasize. Like when someone smiles without their dentures in. Seems like a blessing in disguise! God Bless
its like south africa meets cockney meets Yorkshire....
collymonster she doesn't sound Yorkshire I'm from Yorkshire I can't hear it myself
Brandan Smith where abouts in yorkshire? its not clear clear but its the the way she pronouces some words it sounds very yorkshire/Northern.
btw i'm from North Yorkshire.
collymonster LOL I'm from London and a bit of geordie added to it
...meets New Zealand
It sounds a bit like a South African Northerner at the job centre.
Polite though. That's something.
Imagine waking up and sounding like Arnold Swarzenegger

"British accent is a medical syndrome" damn who woulda thought
These people clearly haven’t been to London or anyone else in England for that matter 😴😂
SadieRose xo exactly
No scence
Yeah. That’s why I dislike Inside Edition. Some of their stuff is dumb and doesn’t give enough info
Her accent sounds like every other American who is trying to do a Brit accent, same with the Irish one
SadieRose xo lmfao fr
I love how Americans can't distinguish one British accent from another.
What am I talking about? I'm American.
We can add Irish to that as well. Dang.
Josie Alyvia same the other way around, british people cant distinguish the multple american accents
Yeah we can. People in New York sound nothing like people from Texas. Much like how people in London sound nothing like people from Birmingham or Manchester.
YangSing1 true but you're also using a couple of the most known states to compare. Like you probably can't tell the difference between someone from Rhode Island to someone from Virginia.
Jocy Herrera Who knows. But I was giving a reasonable explanation to how different each British accent is from each other. In each major city in England the accent is very different, the accent is only similar to another if it's another town or city in the same region as whatever city.
She dosnt sound British. She sounds like an American who's lived in Australia for a few years trying to do a British accent
jelly jelly we R ^^
+Stan Harding-Hill That's funny, that's exactly what I thought! 😀
I thought exactly the same! doesn't sound British and certainly not from London 😂
Well, since she's not actually British, I wouldn't expect her to have an accurate British accent. Just a guess, it came from British movies or shows she's watched, and her neurological twist is relying on those memories. That's probably how she thinks a British accent sounds.
I've heard chavs from London sound like her. Maybe it's because she's not using the slang so it's a bit off.
She does not sound like Mary Poppins. She has a London accent. Mary Poppins spoke good BBC English.
This lady nail every word and I can’t even fake a British accent.
She definitely didn't 😂
I'm British, she absolutely didn't 👌🤣🤣
She ain't talking like us.
@@CableWrestler "ain't" 💀
@@CableWrestler Then what accent do you reckon she is speaking?
Her accent is like very subtle Manchester tbh
with a smidge of Yorkshire and a dollop of fake. :)
gracie grace you don't know a manc accent
butterflyreflections Haha
gracie grace you clearly don’t know what a Manc sounds like! Wtf
Nope, not a Manchunian, accent. She sounds a little like someone from the Norfolk Broads.
That woman didnt sound like she was from Ireland at all.
I know I thought I was the only one
Ikr
I was like wtf??
trur
It's Americans who made this. That says it all.
All she said was "Doodley Doo"
Alternative slander title: Lady had brain damage and now sounds British.
If I was her I would be thankful that I didn't get an Indian accent
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Ikr, the scammers have given the Indian accent a bad rep.
Joao Cavaliere lmao. Would be hilarious 😂😂😂
LOLOLOLOL
0:06 she's one of us brits now she's even playing footy
We have to give her a warm welcome 😂😂😂
Husband: “I think it’s hilarious.” 😂
I feel like I’m the only one that would love this if it happened to me. I would just embrace it and tell people I was from England. Lol.
Until people found out you wren't really English. How embarrassing...
@InfiniteCookie3 I have had chronic dizziness since my stroke that keeps me all day in bed. I would trade my dizziness with this in a heart beat.
I would love it too tbh
you might not be so lucky and get a thick Vietnamese or Indian accent instead
Your a fraud lol
Husband "I think it's hilarious."
Hahahha.
Goalss 🙌🏼
She sounds Australian, she doesn’t sound like she’s from London....?
infinity 2 Don’t put that on us mate 😬
Axil She doesn’t sound like us brits either. We also, don’t want her lmao. \_(•_•)_/

The husband said he thinks it’s hilarious Lol. What a great nice caring husband she’s got
1:24 ‘she sounded like a woman from Ireland’. Sorry I’m from Ireland and we don’t sound like that at all haha. She sounds more Australian or South African
Yeah. I thought South African too (I'm a Brit)
Agreed
Ya I’m from cork and I had to go to the comment section when I heard her voice she’s Australian man

yh it didn't sound British to me what so ever
She certainly doesn't sound like Mary Poppins. Completely different accents.
Ok first of all why do all Americans compare British people to Mary poppins? And second of all she has the most unconvincing British accent ever?
Natalie Grant she said that's a compliment her speech therapy is working
Terryfold
So you heard 1 person say it now it's an ,american thing' nah. Its just that the whole word associates her with poppins
Natalie Grant Okay first of all not ALL Americans compare brits to marry poppins at all
Why do you say all Americans... it’s like if one person from America or any country says something, people then assume everyone else does the same...
Natalie Grant actually Julie Andrews is from England and plays mary poppins in that movie
NONE OF US IN LONDON SOUND LIKE THIS WOMAN OR MARY POPPINS
do u even london?
flisko I live there
ill mash u up blud
Samuel Durrant Haha ikr
Yes you do
It would be cool if i had that, imagine a Puerto Rican guy with a British accent, i wouldn't mind at all
Suavemente
ikr
I'm Puerto Rican and I can make a British accent
John Fizzelo me too
l0l
I heard the forgetting Sara marshal line, “you sound like your from london. “😂Lol
For those saying that she doesn’t sound british, watch the whole video till the end. She has been taking speech therapy to get rid of it. So she may not sound exactly like the accent, which is good for her since that is what she wants, she wants to get rid of it and sound like herself again.
London accent? More like a Newcastle accent
I dont think so... more like Leeds
Yeah I think maybe specifically east riding of Yorkshire
ant wto I live in Newcastle and I don’t sound anything like that.
ant wto it sounds a little bit as a Gordie accent but I’m from Newcastle
ant wto that’s what I was saying! Funny enough I’m from the U.S and even I know what a Newcastle accent sounds like!
I want to be able to fake an British accent...

So weird, it's a mix of a Yorkshire accent and some sort of Australian/South African accent.
BlunderCity no she doesn't, her accent has never been Yorkshire not even in the slightest 😂
Ellie Taff
Birmingham then. Definitely more northern than southern.
BlunderCity it doesn't sound like an Australian accent at all
