    Aang trying to rush to the best bending element like fire without learning the basics about fire and how to control it and learning water and earth first is a huge reason why Jeong Jeong didn't want to train him in the first place. He was not ready. You can't rush these things. Look at admiral zhao

    Jeong Jeong: Power in Fire Bending comes from the breathe. That is why you must master proper breathe control.

    Avatars are supposed to master the elements in a certain order. They start with their native element and follow the cycle of the seasons. For Aang, that means the final element he is supposed to master is fire.

      I thought it was based of the cycle of which Avatar Wan, the first avatar, learned the element (After their native element). But it still makes sense, as Air bending is strongest during Autumn/Fall, Water during Winter, Fire during Summer and Earth during Spring. Never thought the seasons also apply to the cycle.

    9:38, and that’s actually something Uncle Iroh reminded Prince Zuko about in the first episode “No, Prince Zuko. Power in firebending comes from the breath, not the muscles. The breath becomes energy in the body, the energy flows through your limbs and becomes fire”.

  • @calistodorren
    @calistodorren 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    In this show, it's air, water, earth, fire, this is most likely because of the level of difficulty that Aang will have in learning each of the different elements. As we've seen he's basically mastered his primary ability to Air-bend, and because of the philosophical and physical technique similarities, water-bending is practically second nature to him. Earth will most likely be very draining for him because it's been shown that earth-benders are very grounded and stubborn, whereas the monks/nomads were more free-spirited. Fire is probably going to be the hardest for Aang to come to terms with due to it being the wildest and most destructive element, which will most likely mean he will have to learn more about discipline and taking on the full extent of the responsibilities and properly understanding the consequences that his actions as the Avatar will have on the world.

  • @ElvinGirineza
    @ElvinGirineza 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    The Avatars generally learn the elements in the order of the Avatar Cycle. In Aang's case being born an Airbender he would learn Water, Earth, then Fire in that order.

    6:27, I love it when Sokka makes obviously true points that the other characters ignore

  • @dannybob42

    It is a harsh lesson from Aang to learn discipline as well as craft, from the reluctant ronin-esque master Jeong-Jeong. But that being said, while a powerful firebender himself, and a good teacher in discipline itself, Jeong-Jeong was perhaps not the best suited to be Aang's firebending teacher; as good as he was he treated his power like a curse and felt that true mastery was achieved by never using it, which was perhaps not so productive for Aang and his need to defeat the Fire Lord.
    The cycle is tradition, the Avatar usually learns bending from a cyclic order depending on the nation they were born in; since Aang was an Airbender, the cycle is Water, Earth and Fire, Roku before him as a Firebender would've learned Air, Water and Earth, and so on and so forth. That doesn't mean Aang couldn't have mastered it in a different order though, after all tradition was already broken by telling him he was the Avatar before he was 16.
    On the plus side, Katara was fortunate enough to have unlocked a unique sub-skill of Waterbending: Healing. Also we got to embarrass Zhao without even touching him.

    Chey was designed after an Avatar animator from the J.M. Studio in Korea. The character Chey was originally written as extremely crazy.
    But after a few re-writes his craziness was toned down, but not all the way. Chey's wanted poster was hanging on the kiosk next to Aang's wanted poster.

  • @TriXJester

    Aang was trying to skip steps in his training, and that's why it went wrong. Jeong Jeong was right when he said Aang lacked the proper discipline to learn firebending. Which extra hard for Airbenders whose own element has the main strength of freedom and being untethered.

    I felt bad for Aang because he accidentally burned Katara but at the same time, I was annoyed when he said that he would never firebend again. I know that was a great disappointment on his part but he can’t be a full-fledged Avatar without firebendending. Simple as that.

    "Burning Curse" was one of many alternate titles in contention for this episode. It may seem out of place for a season titled "Water." But it sets up the destructiveness of fire - exactly what Aang is trying to stop. It also sets up Aang's fear of firebending.

    Aang forgets where he is, he forgets he’s watching a magic show, he forgets he’s in a Fire Festival, and he also forgets he’s the Avatar. Am I missing anything else? Katara was never in danger. I just love the fact that instead of running away since he full knows that the Fire Nation is after the Avatar, he does a dance. Also, I love that Jeong Jeong read Aang like a book. Jeong Jeong shouldn’t be a teacher due to his loathing of his firebending. If you tell Aang to do something, he does the exact opposite. He’s the flop for this episode with Zhao being a honorable mention.
    Roku showing up is not helpful to the situation. Roku, you should have known better that Aang needs to learn the elements in order. There’s a reason why it’s called the Avatar Cycle. Finding a firebending master to teach Aang is going to be slim pickings. Roku should have said you will teach Aang here either by coming here or finding him when he learns Water and earth. Roku’s failing as a guide.

    • @Themandalorian935
      @Themandalorian935 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's a theory that Roku showed up and forced jeong jeong to teach aang us because he wanted aang to learn about restraint, self control and patience the hard way. As in Roku believed that you can't teach aang this things by just telling him. He won't listen to you unless he learns them through a lesson.

    @kireiscorner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    You know what I LOVE about this episode. Everything Jeong Jeong said was confirmed to be true. The same lessons Iroh gave Zuko in the first few eps were given to Aang by Jeong Jeong. He learned from experience, through his own suffering as well as the suffering he caused, and the loss of his student to violence. His PTSD is really strong & he feels a lot of regret, and I really love his complexity. He taught Aang one of his most valuable lessons. Bending isn't easy, it takes time and hard work, and patience. There will be no shortcuts when it comes to hardships. Overcoming darkness to see the light is a big theme in this show, and learning to take an L to fight another day are necessary lessons Aang needed to learn. He is slowly maturing, and he doesn't take risks after this episode. He starts thinking cautiously and how best to protect over showing off cool bending for the rest of the show and thats such a cool but subtle way to show growth in his character.

    I'm glad you are starting to see the similarities between the elements. That fire and air, water and earth have their similarities. Air fire fire are not physical elements. But water and earth are physical elements. Because you can find earth and water in their natural forms. But air and fire are metaphysical. It's something you have to create and control in your mind. They're not something that can be tasted, felt, seen or imagined. A fire or wind will not start itself, but a rock slide or a tsunami has it's own physical origin.

    When john john said that fire comes from control of the breath, that didn't mean he is using airbending to help him use his firebending. At a more master level of bending he could use both at the same time but at this early stage of his learning he cannot. John john simply meant that breath control is a foundation of firebending to be able to control the amount of "fire bending power" that is emitted from the body. Fire bending in this world is slightly different from the other elements because there doesn't need to be fire around for them to produce it. They fire bend by absorbing the energy of the sun and changing that energy to heat/fire essentially.

    9:53 I realize I'm late to this, but I didn't see an answer to this in the comments and wanted to give my own. And yes, I am aware you have already started Legend of Korra at this point. Regardless...
    Flat answer: yes, he *would* be a more powerful firebender due to his airbending. However, power does *not* equal control. It's like the difference between a cannon and a sniper round. Cannon can do more damage in general, but a sniper round does more damage to the thing you aim at, while limiting the spread.

    I get for like the plot to happen there had to have been some way for jeong jeong to change his mind about teaching Aang but it made zero sense for Roku to step in. He’s an avatar, he should’ve already known Aang had to learn the elements in order and that obviously he wasn’t ready
