Danny Kaye was one of Hollywood's TRUE uncontested talents. The man could dance (See him in White Christmas with Vera Allen), sing, do comedy and serious acting. He had all 4 aces up his sleeve but also was a accomplished chef of Italian and Chinese cuisine. There will never be another Danny Kaye and it is a shame he was never used more because his talent far surpassed many who were more well known. Truly a acting genius in every sense of the word.
So my little Danny Kaye story. In 1961 I was an army lieutenant with orders to Korea, and passed through Las Vegas, saw the signs, but could not get into the sold-out Danny Kaye Show. Go to Korea, it is Christmas on the DMZ, with the 7th Cavalry, and I was there as a forward observer from the 77th Artillery, and who, to my wondering eyes should appear, in the gym, but Danny Kaye, and his pianist. And he put on an hour show, with the funny Russian accent, talking a mile a minute, and everyone loved it. And the audience was all armed to the teeth with rifles, and BARs, because it was the DMZ, and everyone carried. Not the Bob Hope show. Just him and the pianist. And a bunch of appreciative GIs.
He's been my favorite person my whole life. I used to watch his B&W movies with my grandad who passed when I was 3. I remember Danny Kaye chilling me out, and to this day I am soothed by his voice and natural antics on my worst days. He's been dead almost my whole life but he's my most favorite human whose ever walked the earth
Danny Kaye was a rare talent. I loved watching him on TV and in his movies when I was younger. Too bad this movie is not on TH-cam in full. A great comedy.
I stumbled across the film couple of weeks ago on Talking Pictures ,and now I'm here .wonderful happy childhood memories with my dearest dad .How lucky I was
You can easily find it on a few different pirating sites for free. I won't post the names here, lest they taken down, but you can just sift through a bunch of sites until you find one with the movie.
I know it's crazy for someone I never met or even saw, but I genuinely miss this man. There have been precisely three celebrities I have shed tears over as if it were a personal loss - Jimmy Stewart, Danny Kaye, and (most recently) Robin Williams (with Alan Rickman being a very close 4th). When a celebrity dies, we certainly feel the absence of their work but with these men, it goes deeper and I can't tell you why, beyond their seemingly ineffable connection with their audience. Yes, I miss them more than one would think. I anticipate a similar reaction to Alan Alda and Betty White. I don't think I realized it at the time, but I believe Danny's last performance was on The Cosby Show as the family dentist, (aside from interviews and a bit of composing). And suddenly, I was 8 years old again watching the Court Jester for the first time. It remains my favorite because shows his diversity so well, and his energy. In it he is suave, funny, romantic, goofy, and smart - all while singing and dancing around. And the lullaby he sings to the baby remains a family tradition for me. I sang it to my son when he was born, and I sang it to my grandson. My son knows it well and has promised to sing it to HIS grandchildren one day. My husband believes in the idea that there is no great beyond, and that we live on as long as others remember us, but when the last person to do so dies, we experience a final death. I, personally, choose to believe in more. But, if he's right - Danny Kaye will live forever. #RIPDanny
This contains without a doubt the best comedy scene ever put on film. Having watched it over a hundred times and knowing very well what is to come, I ALWAYS burst out in laughter after the "Julio!" scene. I challenge anyone to try and do this better.
My son brought this movie to my attention when he was in 8th grade 4 years after his 4th grade teacher made their 4th grade class watch this. He said noone wanted to deal with it but they were ALL 100% behind it after like 10 seconds. This movie transcends. My kid was in public school in San Jose Ca in 1997. His class was of all nationalities and backgrounds. Not a one didn't "make a fool of themselves falling over this gem. Too perfect. 100 percent light hearted perfectly delivered feel good movie and thanks to MASTER who put this shite together.
I'm Gen Z but I'm very grateful that because of my Mum I've watched this masterpiece hundreds of times. Amazing that Glynnis Johns and Angela Lansbury are still kicking Edit: Rip Angela Lansbury, Glynis Johns made it to 100!
As easy as Danny Kaye made it look, he had to do it twice. I'm pretty sure the size of the studio meant that the acoustics were so bad that he first filmed it, then had to dub in the recording we hear, in the studio, perfectly synchronized with the film. It's amazing, really.
I watched this with my bf today. I first watched this movie at a friend's house in 2014 or 2015. It was one of her favorite movies. I liked it & asked for it for my birthday & I got it.
There was almost nothing this man couldn't do.... sing in wide variety of genres (GREAT voice!), dance, do stunts, do crazy stuff with his face, act up a storm... and make EVERYBODY laugh!! Like Rowan Atkinson, Robin Williams and Peter Sellers all rolled into one.. with a healthy dose of Fred Astaire thrown in for good measure. Was my favorite actor as a child.
One thing that nobody seems to mention is that Kaye could rattle off dialogue in real-sounding foreign languages, when all he could REALLY speak was English and Yiddish
one of the most funniest movies/musical ever. The dialogues are fantastic. Danny Kaye simply great. And not to forget Miss Jessica Fletcher...pardon...Angela Lansbury
Danny is the real King here - and so many talents alongside him: Glynis Johns; (the imcomparable) Mildred Natwick; Basil Rathbone; Angela Lansbury; Cecil Parker... a stellar cast. This is one of the greatest films of all time. It can never be remade.
His method of delivery in this patter song (any snappy fast paced humorous nonsense song) reminds me of the late John Lamb Reed, truly a master comic this Danny Kaye.
I adore this movie on so many levels but one thing I think doesn't get the praise it should is the costuming. That Jester's outfit is beautiful. All the costumes are beautiful but that jester's outfit and cap is really special. And looking it up, this movie's costuming was done by Edith Head. So no wonder it was so good.
When I was a kid I didn't understand the part with him whistling and willow willow wailing but now I understand that was their secret code and he was trying to communicate to her that he was gonna sneak her the basket.
Here's a link to it on putlocker putlocker123.video/the-court-jester-movie/ It's less than two hours long and really is a timeless masterpiece, I thoroughly recommend it
I love this movie and have so many good memories of it. I love his movies but this is my favorite perhaps followed by 5 pennies. He was just such an amazingly talented man
@Sean Valdehueza You'd have to go on his website and send an email etc. He can rarely be arsed to reply to anyone on here. Probably too many people to rely to.
They only play half this song - Danny Kaye goes on for another two or three minutes about the basket! The second part starts off “in Italy at harvest time when the fruit is on the vine, all the people gather to sing about the wine”!
@@camacho_roman_costume Danny Kaye was a master of "double talk" - sounding like he was speaking a foreign language when he really was just babbling. Could do fake German and French too
He destroyed the opera in "Wonder Man". He destroyed the BALLET TWICE; in "The Kid From Brooklyn" he did it by song("Nice fellow, Sergeievsky, but no mind of his own!"). In "Knock On Wood" he did it by actually DANCING in a performance on stage
There was more talent in Danny Kaye than the entire present day entertainment industry combined.
Lucille Ball did too
Your soooooooo right
So true!
I'm pretty sure Ant-man is better than this.
@@teex84that is simply not true. I like Paul Rudd, and he's one of the only good actors today, but to say he's better than Danny Kaye is just wrong

@@williamheyman5439 Good story =)
Any time I'm feeling depressed I watch the maladjusted jester and am always cheered up. Danny was really a gemius!
I watch it over and over to lift my spirits too.
You meant to write "genius"
As a young boy i was in love with Danny, now 40 years later i understand why. He had the kind of humour and was the star of the screen. Every screen.

Danny was such a unique talent . Handsome and elegant, and a real gentleman.
And that absolutely gorgeous red hair.
Love him, great actor, unforgettable. It's a great gift to make people laugh 😍
No matter how fast he's talking you can understand every single word.
was almost like an early form of rapping, his diction and pronunciation of every word while singing amazing is great
He is the best patter singer I've ever heard.

Was Provided by His Wife
Sylvia Fine !!
Danny Kaye was good at that

I've known every single word to this song for probably 30 years... love it. :-)
This and his other famous tongue twisters were actually written by Kaye's wife, Sylvia Fine.
His wife gave the perfect eulogy at his funeral: "Walter Mitty had a dream, but Danny Kaye lived it."

He had it all.
Check out the You Tube clip of him singing "Ballin The Jack". In that one is sexy.

Beyond brilliant!
Loved this song. Loved these old movies.
My now late grandmother used to *completely* adore Danny Kaye.
Angela and Glynnis bears all the striking resemblance and spitting images and Same exact looks as Sleeping Beauty and Belle from Beauty and the Beast
I used to watch this movie often when I was a child. I had many of the lines memorized but now it's been too long. Great memories I tell ya!
One of the funniest men in show biz ever!
This movie is priceless
Hearing this, I keep imagining Danny Kaye doing "The Nations of the World" song from Animaniacs. 😜👍
I remember watching this one day in my senior year English class! Little did I know what genuine comedy I was in for. RIP Angela
One day i wish to open my own theatre and do a production of the Court Jester open to all who want to sing and act :)

Brilliant, thank you for reminding us with your post !
Who else but Danny Kaye could sing a stand-up routine?
I would've never found this if it wasn't for a fanfic reccommending it, what an odd way things go sometimes, but this is true art
I still find it hard to believe that's Angela Lansbury in the Blue dress! :O
En serio?
Well, I'd rather believe she wasn't in the dress. But, that's a story for another time.
I revisited this movie in her memory
What a gem he was… and the rest of the supporting cast is excellent too. Real talent then

Forgot about Robin Williams
Danny Kaye ... He was the best tv babysitter for 1965

And he knew how to sing and dance too. I'm a Danny Kaye fan!
Also Michael Palin from Monty Python, see the Spanish Inquisition skit

Oh dear Danny. What better man to court Italians. He was indeed nobody's fool.
Years ago Rolling Stone Magazine put out a survey asking people what their most hated movie was. One answer was "Anything with Danny Kaye it in"
Seems to be kind of the same sentiment about Adam Sandler films.
Happy birthday Danny Kaye!
