I hadn't forgotten my user ID, but my old MAC had stopped recognizing the special character within it. I thought my keyboard was failing, so I got another keyboard, the problem persisted. I checked out other videos, but yours was the most succinct, and yours was the only one I found that allowed comments, which to me said everything! Thank you MOST kindly for your much-needed assistance! and may I say, YOU ROCK!

I have to agree with the last guy who commented. Saved my butt! I tried a couple other suggested methods that did not work on my MacBook Pro. Hi, command +s doesn't work. It takes me to the normal log in screen. Please, help!

cmd r takes me to the padlock.....
the only way to fix this is to flash the bios, or literally solder a newly programmed bios chip to the logic board

I still own a Mac OS 10.4. I know it's a dinosaur but still works fine. The only problem is that i forgot the password I set up ages ago. You just solved an ancient problem of mine in just a few minutes. I am speechless. THANK YOU!!!
