  • Economist and social critic Glenn Loury talks about his memoir, Late Admissions, with EconTalk's Russ Roberts. In a wide-ranging and blunt conversation, Loury discusses his childhood, his at-times brilliant academic work, his roller-coaster ideological journey, and his personal flaws as a drug addict and imperfect husband. This is a rich conversation about academic life, race in America, and the challenges of self-control.

Brilliant - a rare interview where both participants are smart and articulate

Great conversation! I appreciate the idea of rejecting simplicity, slogans, and flawed arguments regardless of ideological leaning.

A very interesting conversation. I can sympathize, given that I'm even more of a failed academic - completing my masters's but failing my Ph.D. thesis - and then losing my mind to drugs and to pornography - ended up in prison (for nearly 5 years) - and then deported to France, whence from I'm watching this. Things ended rather more badly for me - I needed therapy, but I got prison and deportation instead. It's complicated because of the kind of pornography I stumbled on and downloaded for which I went to prison and labeled a sex offender. Things have never been the same since.

      No. Prison was appropriate.

I don't think you should be comparing yourself to Prof. Loury. Still, I wish you all the best.
