If he had kept training after Cell saga, he probably would've been powerful enough to ascend to SSJ3 without needing to be dead or fused with someone, theoretically speaking, Gohan's hidden potential would've made him so powerful after Cell saga that he would've handled Buu without breaking a sweat. Which is why they had to nerf him and make him the person he is today

2:24 Piccolo rushes to save Gohan and gets faint and almost killed with Gohan just looking without being able to do anything and loses more than half of his body in an instant
2:34 Gohan flips out of rage an his eye pupils disappears when he powers up beyond super saiyan 2 shouting "Piccolo" while having flashbacks when Android 16 died in front of him with the enemy keeps mocking Gohan over Piccolo's body remnant with the foot on his head about to smash it like the rest of his limbs
2:56 suddenly his eye pupils slowly re-appear while his hair start growing backwards and his eyebrows dissapearing with Gohan getting back his sanity
3:14 "YOU'RE DEAD!", That scream comes out of Gohan when he finally reaches the Super Saiyan 3 and the enemy is starting to shake realising he went too far
3:17 Gohan punches him so hard out of nowhere on his face and the enemy goes through a mountain while Gohan enraged is on his trajectory and keeps beating him up
3:39 The enemy gets serious and stops flying of and faces Gohan seriously but he is no much for him
4:00 He realises that and starts charging his ultimate move and so does Gohan doing the Kamehameha
4:10 CLASH OF ENERGY BEAMS
4:21 Gohan overpowers the enemy and starts disintegrating him
4:31 Kamehameha goes up to space like final flash style only bigger
4:53 We see Gohan panting after the struggle while being on his knees in front of Piccolo and in the very end Piccolo starts coughing
5:15 Gohan powers down back to normal and passes out due to exaustion while he realises that Piccolo is alive

Honestly, I like where Gohan is right now. He's got a stable job and can provide easily for his family on his own without having to fight.
Yes, he's much weaker because of that decision to focus on his family instead of getting stronger, but you have to remember that Gohan is always at his strongest when his angry. That power has to be forced out of him because he's not normally as quick to violence like his dad. If it came down to, he'd get back in the fight, but right now, he's not needed. Goku, Trunks and Vegeta are.

Not really, as Gohan would have eliminated Cell very quickly, and not have dragged it out. He would have learnt his lesson, and it wouldn't even have been a battle.

Loky Zorroscuro If Gohan went super saiyan three, after watching his friends get hurt, android sixteen die, and even his father die; he would have realized that he needs to end it quickly. With the power that the SSJ3 posses, it would have probably been a quick win.

We all know Gohan's TRUE hidden powers go beyond the powers of a SSJ2,so I dont see why this couldn't have happened in a "what if"-scenario or such.Would be pretty awesome.
ChaosHead waaaaay beyond, the main theory is that ultimate gohan/Mystic gohan is stronger than SSJ3 goku and can hold that power longer as his mystic power doesn't damage his body like SSJ3 does to goku. The only reason he wasn't a match for super buu(gotenks absorbed) was because buu's power was added to piccolos (just under ssj2 at that time) and gotenks (who could reach ssj3) but after gotenks de-fused gohan would be able to beat any form of buu after that, including kid buu.
Multi Some people say SSJ3 is stronger than Mystic Gohan but I can't see how that is possible, because when Elder Kai helped Gohan unlock his mystic power Goku was amazed,which implicates that Gohan was indeed stronger than Goku at that time. And yeah, Kid Buu wouldn't have been any problem for Gohan, assuming he would've taken the fight seriously. We all know that the only saiyan who is determined to kill any evil opponent he faces right away is Future Trunks.:)

Fun fact: gohan was originally supposed to actually get ssj3 as his next step up from ssj2, but instead they went with the idea of mystic bc they didn't want to animate ssj3 gohan vs super buu since they already had to animate ssj3 goku vs kid buu, so instead they went with a simpler look that'll save them some time since ssj3 is a pain to animate.

Gohan was 11 years old when he reached SSJ2 and took out Cell. ELEVEN. HE WAS A CHILD. Are you telling me that 7 years of hard training, with his body growing stronger through puberty, would mean nothing? I'm sorry but that's the most idiotic thing I've read in a while. During the Majin arc Goku and Vegeta were stronger than the 11 year old Gohan but not by a huge amount. That should tell you just how OP Gohan was even at age 11. Now think, what happens during puberty? HUGE physical advances, that's what. Gohan would have been unstoppable if he had trained hard for 7 years after Cell. Duh.

I always imagine in my head where Cell comes back from the blast and defeats every Z Warrior, except for Gohan, who can barely hold his own in the Super Saiyan 2 state. Then, Cell starts mocking Gohan and the other warriors, causing Gohan to snap once more. This time, the entire planet feels the impact of the transformation, and Cell is left speechless, only trembling at the sight of him. He wasn't prepared. Would he survive this time? Even he doubted it.
I wish one day, someone will animate this scenario with the song, it'll truly be one of the best Dragonball related things ever. It's one of my dreams to see that happen.

This is an amazing mash-up/remix. Great job man. It's really the gohan's anger theme intertwined with the heavy metal guitar riff which sets this mix off for me. The timing as well is impeccable. There's this almost ominous, luminous tone sound that follows the piece, which I adore. All in all, a great piece.
