Such a kind-hearted kid who didn't want to hurt anyone, but he saw that there was no other way to achieve justice but to give into his anger. He finally found the strength that was inside him all along.
It's not just about powerups and transformations, it's the character story and struggles that lead them to those epic moments. It took a long time to reach this point, it was raw emotional event that gives something for adults as well as youngsters. These things were lacking in later in the series and especially in Super. Some of them were epic in a way, but they always came too fast, felt unearned and poorly executed. But in Gohan's case, everything matched and these moment will go down as one of the most epic things in anime history. Let's hope for more professional and people who invest in the series and characters long term to provide equally amazing moments in the future.

The fact that Gohan was never even expected to become the main character of Cell saga is the biggest and most enjoyable plot twist in dbz. Like Trunks lost his master Gohan to the androids then even being more powerful than Gohan in his normal state and then he saw him become a Super Saiyan 2, to eradicate Cell and to protect his loved ones. Like who expected this? Everyone probably expected Trunks or Goku to beat Cell but that plot twist was the greatest of all time.
With Trunks Toriyama hinted at something that was eventually proven true by Gohan and Goten. The most powerful race isn't the Saiyans. It's Saiyan-Human hybrids.

I believe most of us love gohan at this time because he reminded us of ourselves. When this first aired we were around his age and we could relate to his power and emotional imbalance. Now, as we have seen him grow into an adult, we see how we ourselves have changed, and how we miss those powerful and emotionally impacting moments of our youth. At least that’s my hypothesis :p

They said on the reveal stream for part 2 that while this song was very good, it felt very much like a kicking ass song, and while Gohan DOES kick ass, they feel that the original songs idea that it is sad that Gohan is being forced to grow up here, and that is sad.

*I know I am probably late writing this but I can confidently say that many people who don’t understand the meaning behind this theme are probably going to judge you for listening to an anime theme while working out. For them this sounds like instrumentals and there are no words in sight. But, for us it differs because even though we don’t hear any words, this still speaks to us in ways that can’t be perfectly explained unless you were there in the 90s watching it for the first time. mystic form uses all of his bodies latent powers. he can't exceed it, he can however improve his base power.
If I recall correctly, Old Kai said that the way he released Gohan's power was just a patch job, something to release enough to give him the power to beat Buu. So Gohan's potential may not have been fully realized yet.
