    One thing that I have learned about the EFlite Draco is that it HATES being upside down. It recovers very poorly from aerobatic maneuvers, as that is not what it was designed to do. It is a high-performance STOL airplane and that’s it. Also, low level aerobatics are incredibly dangerous in non-aerobatic machines. Shame that this had to happen. I’m just happy I’ve finally got mine!

    I nearly did that myself. The error was not letting off the throttle at the top of the loop and literally powering it into the ground.Gravity works against you on the way down and tries to make the height of the loop larger, so coast down the back side.
    Sorry for the loss. Crashes were much more painfully when we had to build them from balsa kits, so it could have been worse.

    NEVER LOOP WITHOUT HEIGHT

  • @jamesbruce1183
    @jamesbruce1183 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Watched the last part at 1/4 speed and he held up elevator all the way through the (underground) loop. He had enough power to continue straight up or he could have made it a a split-S and flown upright directly away from the camera.
    It is a god idea to never land coming directly at yourself. It is hard to judge distance and speed.
    The left turning at takeoff can be fixed with right rudder. It will help offset torque and p-factor that are dominant at low speeds and high power settings. Then you can fly a crisp pattern easily.

    If I ever get to own the Horizonhobby eFlite Draco RC, I’m going to fly it in a similar fashion to Mike Patey…more scale, without the performance of some 3D or air show flight demo pilot maneuvers. Because whenever any RC pilot starts flying this plane in a fashion otherwise this will be the result, not enough mistakes high to attempt recovery, and keeping the plane out in front of the zero line. I know the wind was a factor. I’m glad nobody got hurt, just the $600 slam to the wallet.

    I'm sorry to here about your head injury. I was skiing in Massachusetts years ago and fell on a icy patch and sled into a tree stump which ruptured my kidney and I spent ten days in the hospital. I lost 2-3 pints of blood internally and in my Blatter ,. My blood count was monitored every other hour to see if my kidney was healing or if it had to be removed . Luckly it did heal back together since I had to stay in bed the whole time without moving. I still kept on skiing but was very cautious from then on in Colorado,Utah,california,and Nevada. Oh by the way I spent a year in Vietnam getting mortar fire ,snipper fire and getting stitched up from stupid things since I drove an 17 ton army wrecker all over the lower part of Vietnam. Life goes on and everybody has a story, you were meant to be which somebody told me one time. Good luck Buddy

    My Turbo Timber flys like the Draco. I added an Aerostar 60 RVS ESC for reverse thrust after touchdown. Works great when you can find the right switch! I accidentally hit the reverse switch in the air and when I went full power the prop noise was scary. I immediately cut the power and landed to inspect for damage. No damage but lesson learned is choose a switch that is hard to get to like the A switch. I’m sure we will hear about reverse thrust loss of control incidents.

    too low for a loop for my liking, but, it is doable. if you want safety dont aim for a perfect circle of a loop, let it climb a bit more-ease off the up elevator just to get another few meter of altitude, and when at the top kill the throttle for like a half second and the plane will just drop the nose more than you would with elevator without a chance of getting it in a spin, full throttle then again with up elevator.

      fair play for riskin a plane for safety of the others.
      i was not there, and cant see the whole picture on video, but if there was a plan in that touch n go, it was a bad one and poorly executed. flyin perpendicular to the pitt is not wise in my opinion on a first place because you are flying towards a no fly zone and it puts you in these kind of situations where you dont have a lot of room to manuevre or think. once he pulled up and got a bit of altitude it was safe, ish, if he went for a turn instead of a dive, in which he stalled it (thats why it spun arround) and it was too low to get it out of that.
      most of my time in the air i am thinking about emergency. what if... what if my motor dies now, what if my aileron servo dies, what if my elevator saervo dies... had it all happen before, and it was the fact that i was ready for it that saved my planes.
      have a plan, and leave your self options for when the plan backfires. altitude and speed are 2 options for example which would be of a good use here.
      with all the shit i did, not just in flyin but in life, i will advise to be smart in stupidity

      Cameraman did what I expect 95% of us would do, DUCK!!!!! Me and my friend Bernie went to a Blue Angels air show in Jersey a number of years ago. He was filming it on his camcorder until the solo and reverse solo approached the viewing area head on from about a mile or so out, then they went knife edge and crossed each other. one going left, the other right. From our vantage point it looked like if they had crashed at that point they would have landed on top of several thousand people. So my friend at that instant did what I expect 95% of people would do, he DROPPED THE $600 CAMCORDER ON THE PAVEMENT AS HE DUCKED FOR COVER. And that was when a dollar was a dollar. Did he get the shot? I honestly don't remember but have to ask him next time I see him. maybe I can post the video here if he had any better luck than Chris! LOL
