Hi, I started mining Helium with a Bobcat Miner with the OEM antenna in a window on the 3rd floor (20m) of an office. I live in a very flat, low height, very populated city and I made no gain adjustments with that setup. I was averaging about 0.30 HNT per day and achieve a personal best of 0.44 HNT superbowl Sunday. Sunday evening an hour before the new UTC day I installed a new 8 Dbi antenna (Bingfu) on a magnetic base (Bingfu) that has a 10ft RG58 cable. I noticed a drop in activity over the course of the super bowl so 5 hours later I changed the gain to 6.2 which accounts for the attenuation for this setup hoping to increase the power sent to the antenna by the minor. The first full day UTC day using the new antenna setup and the combination of gains, yielded my worse performance to date of 0.21 HNT. Any ideas with what's gone wrong. I'm going to let the current setup 8 dbi antenna with 6.2 gain ride for another couple of days but I'm thinking the Bobcat antenna setup might be the better choice. Although, according to every source my 8dbi setup such have increased my witnessnessing significantly. PLEASE HELP!
Are earnings still down? A possible reason would be that your antenna is now reaching miners in more populated locations, so while you're reaching more of them, your rewards are scaled down because they're in dense locations. I've also not heard of setting the Dbi in the app by subtracting your loss. I think you're simply supposed to input what your antenna Dbi is by default, and possibly the network or app does the rest of the calculation work.
@@favorites1484 yes, earnings and witnessing were down steadily for three days. Yesterday at 20:00 UTC I switch back to the stock bobcat antenna and immediately you could see the increase in activity. As of close of day, I’ve had my second most profitable day. I believe the BIngfu brand antenna (Amazon choice) is crap quality and doesn’t deliver what is actually stated in the description. You should adjust the antenna gain for the the attenuation or you’ll be under powered. Say you have a 8dbi antenna with a 3 dbi attenuation. You set the gain to 8dbi instead of 5dbi. The miner in the US only sends 27dbm of power to the antenna and will adjust you down. So and setting of 8dbi the miner sends less power because of fed rules. 6dbi get more power. It’s all about the your total power is 27dbm-attenuation+antenna dbi.
Even if it's a narrow angle. Let's say you place the antenna at a 10m altitude. The 8dbi antenna has a Vertical Beam Width of 27 degrees. We may assume other antenna's aren't placed on the ground, but let's keep it low at a 2m altitude. This leaves us with +/- 8m height difference and an angle to that point of 13.5 degrees. That would mean that you only can't see those other antenna's within +/- 33.5 meters, which in suburban areas might be just 5 houses further.
Where I live, the 2.3 that came with my GoldSpot was good. I had 16 witnesses after full sync. I then upped it to a 4db (current) and now I have a steady 24 witnesses in which the furthest is 59km away. I'm waiting on my 8dbi to test yet again and see how well I do. I'm in a valley, 2800ft above sea level, so tweaking is fun.

Amazing Job bro, I was going to get a 5.8dbi one but this video made me change my mind. I live in a 3rd floor and have no way to go to the roof. Is it ok if I mount the antenna outside next to my window or in the balcony?
Avoid studs, avoid aluminum siding but if it's drywall and plaster or thin facing brick you may find a better signal as opposed to some windows that are coated , double paned or has inaccessible screens .. just food for thought. Also those numbers look a bit high for some materials..I guess it's better to er upwards
New subscriber and new to mining in general. I just purchased my first helium miner, FreedomFI 5G, and was looking into purchasing my first antenna. Right now I'm looking at the McGill omni 6 dbi 915 and LMR-400 Antenna cabling for an exterior mount at the peak of my inverted V shape roof, roughly 23-30 ft. from the ground level with eve side mounting pole when all said and done. My question to you is I haven't decided the location to place the miner just yet but was considering two options. Option 1) My bedroom where my home and ISP routers reside OR option 2) the attic. If I place the miner in my bedroom my Anttena cabling length will be 25-30 ft with an efficacy of 79.3% (roughly 80%). If I place the miner in the attic near the ventilation port my Antenna cable run to the outside eve location will only be 4-5 ft. with a rating of 95.6% according to McGills calculator (lots of work/home modification going this route). My problem is there is no electricity or internet connection in the attic and all that has to be run before getting my minor setup for that. On paper, these percentage differences seem like a huge reduction of signal loss but wasn't really sure if my laziness to just run the cabling from my bedroom where power and internet reside would cost me much in witnessing profitability. I plan on getting on board with the 5G when it's running. That's going to be costly taking a look at all that's involved in the investment aspect. Hoping that I can mine enough now to cover a portion of that. Basically, the antenna I purchase now will be useless in the future when I move to 5G, but I suppose I could reuse it if I purchase a second minor and place it at a different grid location (family/Friends House). I'm also hoping that when 5g comes about that I can take advantage of living 1 block away from the mall and all the restaurants and businesses around it (planning ahead). Also just for informational purposes, do you know if there is some loss in signal strength when joining two short cables together with a barrel connection to make one longer antenna cable? Can't seem to find any documentation on that. I haven't received my minor just yet, should be here tomorrow but with that said below is my competition within my Hex. Can you let me know how If I'm going about this right with all that I have laid out. Soft Pearl Hyena High Parchment Rooster Melodic Lilac Pony Thanks for your help, loving your content.

I am going to design my own antenna I am going to use 4 gage solid core stretched wire at 18" long it should create 8 dbi with an omni it won't be in fiberglass but in carbon fiber. You have to account for loss to get 120 to 824 percent gains Lrm 400 works fine at 35 ft of cable Also if you want to utelize two antennas with a powered Gain you can set it to .02 gain to a .06 positive gain . How much does it cost 450.00 for the antenna

Hello, I am really thinking about getting one. I live on the 7th floor in a building. I am not sure which antenna would be the best for me. Could you please give me some recommendation? Thanks
@@DoItJustinKace it’s in my home, window of 7th floor. There are like 2 half inch glasses. The miner is inside of the window. Just sitting on the end of the window.
Already I worry about that much glass. Never heard of a 2” glass window tho. Sounds heavy. You there that’s not just triple pane or something? Maybe try an 5.8 being in the second floor.
Depends on the size of the building and 'line of sight'. E.g. if there are several walls between, the signal will definitely not go through it. Then you can only send and receive in a certain direction. When there are tall buildings in front of you on one side, that again will block your signal and could mean a directional antenna could be better for you. And, if possible, place the antenna on the outside of your window.
would love to know exactly how you have that antenna set up back there, with the miner hooked to the side(how?), and the fan that i see. thank you! great video!
instead of trying to punch thru building walls, why not go over the building? im new to this thing but i think i will try the 5.8dBi first. living in apartment is really bad for mining.
So how are you setting up these arrangements? Are you splitting the coin with them or paying them a fee for having it in their house or just selling them the devices and installation?
Good video and I am looking to swap out my 5.8 for a 8dbi however won’t the 8 overshoot all the hotspots closer to me? Most people steer away from a 8dbi for this reason. I want to try one but am reluctant at the same time.

Hi Justin always a pleasure watching your content. Definitely one of the best and informative out of all helium you tubers and I’m subbed to quite a few. Your take on 8dbi for every scenario has got my attention since I thought in the suburbs a 3 or 5 dbi was optimal thru youtubers ive listened to. Not 1 has ever said 8 dbi by the window. Do you use the cable that came with the 8dbi or do u buy the lmr400 in the attic set up. Cause I’ll be putting mine in the attic. Thx buddy
I'd do your own testing, I gained two witnesses switching from 8dbi to 6dbi. And that pigtail is about .9dbi loss which equates to about 10 percent of the transmit power to your antenna, my 25 ft LMR 400 cable has 1.1dbi loss for reference. That's the reason people get the shorter ones or switch to LMR cables. You might not need LMR400, LMR240 for shorter runs is actually a better choice. Find a good antenna, RAK is OK, Rokland has better performace on paper and of course there more expensive ones. I picked Rokland for performace, price and shipping timelines. For my situation elevation is the main objective but I live in a flat area and overpasses stop my signal. Both my 8dbi and 6 dbi reach the same hotspots at 40 miles. Good luck gents! www.timesmicrowave.com/Calculator
About 150’ of cable. But if I use PoE that means placing miner off the ground and if I ever need to get to miner I have to have pay a company to go get it. Owner of tower will not let me on it do to safety and liability.

Hi mate, Thank you for the video, I have a question. I live in a highrise flat with a balcony 100m above ground in the city. I have a few other miners near by but none in my hex, What would be the best antenna for me?
It’s no wonder why my the set up I have at my mother in law house isn’t making any money .. it’s literally 6 sides of brick and I can’t mount it outdoors !
Question: if you have an 8 dbi antenna attached to coax which lowers the dbi by 2, would the signal ( ie the balloon) be the same 8 dbi balloon shape or a 6 dbi balloon shape?
The waveform is a function of the antenna design. The power level (range) is affected by signal loss. The waveform (balloon) still has the 8 dBi shape. It now will just be shorter range due to the signal loss. Imagine the antenna shaping the balloon, and the power causing it to shrink or swell in that shape. A 3 dBi antenna at 915MHz is full capable of reaching an antenna 100km away. This misunderstanding is why he can reach downtown Denver by can't reach the more profitable hotspots that are closer to his house.
@@granta6216 Great explanation of antenna performance. I've gained 2 witnesses by switching from 8dbi to 6dbi and I didnt lose any distance, my farthest witnesses is 40 miles away. Since I'm 30 miles north of Sacramento I thought 8dbi would be best but in my area I dont see any need for anything bigger thatn a 6 dbi antenna. The RAK antenna's seem to be doing well even compared to the higher performing antenna's, I have Rokland and they seem to be decent as well with faster shipping than Rak and better performance spec on paper. Hey Justin, cool channel, happy to see your success. Just wondering if you think us Canadian could get into helium mining, I looked up my address and there isn’t many green helix around me. Does it mean my area isn’t profitable or it could be an opportunity
I hard to say. Depends on how many houses you can get into. I say if you can get 18 hotspots in 18 houses over 300m apart and able to beacon each other, then you have a huge opportunity. But if you just have one hotspot and no others around you, it’s not worth your time.

Nice vid!
Can that antenna connect to my bobcat?
@@alfredo209ful It should. My kit out of the box came with everything I needed.
Update?
@@JoshTVids nothing too crazy, increased my witnesses but not gains
Thanks so much for this video. Makes perfect sense, and I don’t want to deal with lightning here in South Florida I guess the attic it is lol
Glad it was helpful!
Good stuff. Thankyou!
Glad you enjoyed it!
lmfao! I finished my antenna in the dark, on a two story house, with a steep roof pitch, in the rain!!! I'm working 6/10s right now and had to get it done 🤷
Wow you have 2 gold spot miner. Just subscribe. Thank you for the informations it helps a lot. Mine is a bobcat 300, hoping to arrive it as soon as possible. LOL
Amazing Job bro, I was going to get a 5.8dbi one but this video made me change my mind.
I live in a 3rd floor and have no way to go to the roof. Is it ok if I mount the antenna outside next to my window or in the balcony?
Hi there …thanks for all the info on your videos…questions: If I place the antenna inside the attic…..it has to be grounded ? Thanks 🙏🏻
Love your video. So tired of hearing all the Helium experts talk about over shooting. Lol
Those guys are definitely not experts. And I live in places with hills and valleys so I agree it's important to know what you are aiming for.
Just wanted to point out that you may get better penetration mounting to a wall as opposed to windows..just something to consider..
Soft Pearl Hyena
High Parchment Rooster
Melodic Lilac Pony
Thanks for your help, loving your content.
To answer your question - yes there is more loss thru the connectors that are added when you "join" to short cables together.
Currently running 5.8 dbi @ 39 meters to a blue tooth miner 824% gain running lrm600 50ft I think there's one equation everyone needs to consider no homes in general are at sea level this system is like being a pilot you need to work elevation as the ctow flies . 5.8 dbi I sm reaching 400m away.
Also lightning arrestor cost is 200.00 do not buy on Amazon. Supply electrical only ul rated 200 to 300 volt.
Your loss is awesome. I am going to design my own antenna I am going to use 4 gage solid core stretched wire at 18" long it should create 8 dbi with an omni it won't be in fiberglass but in carbon fiber.
You have to account for loss to get 120 to 824 percent gains
Lrm 400 works fine at 35 ft of cable
Also if you want to utelize two antennas with a powered Gain you can set it to .02 gain to a .06 positive gain .
How much does it cost 450.00 for the antenna
You’ve convinced me fuvk the 4 dbi
Yep. Upgrade! Made a new video on it today!
@@DoItJustinKace I can update since I made that comment I have 2 8dbi antennas at 5 and 10m now thanks 🙏🏽
how do you keep the miner cool on hot summer days in an attic? Also wouldn't LMR-600 have even less loss?
I'm thinking of getting into this but there are only 4 Hotspots in my area and they are all brown. The blues are almost 100km away. Is it still worth while? How can I help get the Hotspots in my area to be blue so we can all earn more?
I know I'm super late to this video, but just getting into helium and checking everything out.
Was just curious what kind of stick stand is that you use for the antenna and miner?
I've got hurricane impact windows, block construction, with a metal roof. I need to get up on my roof and hope for the best.
Attic work IMO.
I'm thinking about doing an attic antenna install, do you recommend it? I live in the city not sure if it's worth installing outside. 5.8dbi
Are the new LITE Miners worth getting and available? Where? Do they earn half what a Bobcat would at the same location (since they cost half as much)
What do you think about McGill antennas, they are better optimized and higher quality. It's sayd to earn 7% more HNT.
The McGill antennas are "optimized" - do you have any idea what that means? Do you own one? If you DO own one does it make more HNT than the previous antenna that you were using?
POE will solve your power issue like you said at the end
Man I tried for a hour for the mntd drop today. Didn’t get any. Have nebra and syncrobit still on way. Only have my rak lol tried installing the 5.8dbi antenna. But the network is down
Possible dumb question, but hey I don't know. Can you spray paint the Antenna for a blend in color would it affect the signal at all? Also, I wonder how it would work with the Bobcat miner that is currently coming to me soon. Thanks in advance.
got two 8dBi from RAK yesterday. now just waiting for my miners
Perfect plan!
@@DoItJustinKace hello, why would helium decrease the transmit power on a higher gain antenna. It doesn't serve their purpose if they want deployment and coverage
@@williamjonson6845 I know it makes no sense, and better yet how do they even know or do they get too good of a signal and drop your output power?
@@generalawareness101 you have to enter type of antenna

Where did you get that gooseneck clamp stand and your stands in the background?
Hi Justin, I live on the third floor of an apartment building. I Currently have a bobcat miner with the stock antenna and I have no witnesses and I'm only earning about $10 a week. Can I use the Rak Wireless antenna with the bobcat miner? Is Rak Wireless better? Let me know what you think.
@HODLHelium Great video! Would recommend a 8dBi antenna for an antenna mounted outside of my condo balcony door window on the 5th floor?
Hey Justin, I live in Colorado up in foco and was excited to see your videos! Great job! Im new to this and wanted to get your thoughts on recommended router and antenna for this area that won't take forever to ship. I appreciate your expertise and help. Thanks brotha!
How much you lose with longer cable than 5meters LMR400 ? Or can you suggest any cable from which is not losing that much dBi if it's 5-10metters
I’m going to assume the attic would be a no go for a roof that has solar panels.
So do I understand it right? I should place the miner inside in the attic and the antenna on the roof? Moreover, the best thing would be if not only my antenna ranges a8 dBi, but also all the others that I witness or witness me. Thank you.
Hey Justin can you make a video of your rak set up - located behind you ;)
Not sure what you mean. That’s just something I 3D printed.
I currently live down from you and my mntd communicates with yours. I am going to try moving my antenna to the attic if not the roof. Plus I'm upgrading from 3dbi to 8. Hope to improve our neighborhood earnings
Sounds like a plan. Do you you witness me or do I witness you?
Hello, I am really thinking about getting one. I live on the 7th floor in a building. I am not sure which antenna would be the best for me. Could you please give me some recommendation? Thanks
Is it just in the window on the 7th floor? Or on a balcony? At work or home? How thick is the glass?
@@DoItJustinKace it’s in my home, window of 7th floor. There are like 2 half inch glasses. The miner is inside of the window. Just sitting on the end of the window.
Already I worry about that much glass. Never heard of a 2” glass window tho. Sounds heavy. You there that’s not just triple pane or something? Maybe try an 5.8 being in the second floor.
I need 8 Dbi Omni Directional Antenna I'll place above 14th floor roof top. IND 865 Mhz
My fullkit design www.thingiverse.com/thing:5102429/files
instead of trying to punch thru building walls, why not go over the building? im new to this thing but i think i will try the 5.8dBi first. living in apartment is really bad for mining.
I wondered how you can be so focused in every video. I see the case of Mountain Dew behind you. I wonder no more.
Are the cables that I buy LMR-400 on your link?
Good stuff, man. Thanks! My miner is a few km away and is witnessing yours. We should probably set up a meetup of Arvada miners or something... :) I would love to connect and chat.
Lets do it. What miner is that? We should get a bunch of people to meetup in downtown Arvada.
@@DoItJustinKace My replies keeps disappearing... maybe because I'm trying to propose ways we could connect and chat and youtube wants to keep us here. :)
Were you able to get in on the job today with MNTD!?
Thx for the info. I ordered a bobcat miner for me and a friend across town thinking this was easy lol. It hasn’t arrived yet. Any advise on additional items like better antenna? Thx
The stock Bobcat antenna is very good. Just make sure it has good placement.
Thx buddy
Thanks for your comments. I use the pigtail that comes with the antenna. I know some people choose to buy shorter ones of possible less than 12"
I'd do your own testing, I gained two witnesses switching from 8dbi to 6dbi.
@@JBennett530 So your saying the LMR400 cables are better and you end up losing less DBI by using them?
If my house is very densely populated w other miners, would upgrading the antenna help at all? Right now it is at just 1.2dBi.
So I’m placing antenna on a 100’ tower. Going with LMR600 and a 8dbi antenna. Placing router and miner on the ground so I can access easily.
How much LMR600 cable would that be?
Maybe a 5.8 dbi antenna at that height and a PoE setup for internet and power would be better.
About 150’ of cable. But if I use PoE that means placing miner off the ground and if I ever need to get to miner I have to have pay a company to go get it. Owner of tower will not let me on it do to safety and liability.
@@DoItJustinKace see comment below. Didn’t hit reply.
How bad is it to start in an area where you are the first to do it and the next hotspots are like several miles away? I'm from the Philippines.
Do you sell the cooling fans? I may want to know how I can get one from you since I want to place my miner up in the attic and in Florida it gets hot and humid during the summer. Please advice.
I would appreciate it so much if you can answer this question for me it would mean the world. When you update your antenna in the helium app when you switch it to a custom antenna but keep it in the same location does it affect your routers productivity or no?
I received my Freedomfi miner and has only minder $1.20 in three weeks. Do these antennas work for Freedonfi 5G miners as well?
Where can I get those stands behind you? Wanting to place mine in the attic, and something like that would be great. Thanks.
I was working on a new version of them. One where the RAK didn't need to be screwed into place. Would that make more sense?
@@DoItJustinKace It seems like a nice setup as is. I really like the idea of a tripod style stand so I can center the antenna in the open area of the attic and not have to worry about attaching it to the wood.

Hey Justin! Thanks for the info. Thoughts on us Alaskans who got snow on our roof half the year, would attic still work? Or should I put it on a snowless part of the roof? Thanks!
Great questions. Have you done any research on the effect of snow or ice? What did you already find out?
I was considering a 5.8 dbi but after watching ur video i think i want to go for an 8dbi. Heres thing tho, i cant put an rf antenna outside because im in an apartment 7m up (top 3rd floor). Im getting 32 witnesses. You think the rak 8dbi will work good as an indoor antenna?
Great videos man! Do you think it matters what brand of antenna were using? Looking at the RAK website but i have a bobcat 300. Will I have any issues?
RAK will work on Bobcat. Yes, I think brand matters because who know who you can trust and what their quality assurance process is.
What do you suggest for an antenna - I'm 3 miles from edge of city. Mixed houses and trees / acreages between the antenna and city. Max height I can install is 15' in rooftop.
Thanks in advance!!
I'd need an address. Sorry but city hotspot numbers vary and so does the terrain.
Where did you get your 8db antenna? I have purchased 3 off Amazon and they have been low quality. Thanks!

I did the same this morning, but got 1. I had 5 pages and my phone open and spammed with all until it let me in.
No. I missed out. Sadly.
dude, im in the roof top of 26th floor building,,
over the hll city, clear site view all around the 360o. so do you think 8dbi will be good... I'm thinking to add the 3.5 dbi, as 12 or 10 dbi will over shoot all country :)
What city? Right down town? Maybe a 5.8 or 6 dbi if you are worries. But honestly the good hospots with rewards are probably farther away. Not at city hall.
I have got a 12 dbi live in the uk thinking bigger is better will the system lower it to 9 dbi automatically
What antena u choose on 20 and 30m high roof with clear view?
i see the map and some has green and some is normal. Is it good if your house is next to the green ones? or its better if its still empty? thx
What did you get in the last 30 days with your 8dbi?
To add to your list. Double glazed argon gas filled windows uv protection is impossible to get thru. Not sure what ingredient from the windows is worse but Closed window no witnesses for a week. I opened my window for 8 witnesses that day. With a 5.8 dbi antenna 10 meters up with no no line of sight obstacles
Thanks for the information. I assume that's a window at at your work and not a window at your house? I'll definitely research it.
Hi mate,
Thank you for the video, I have a question. I live in a highrise flat with a balcony 100m above ground in the city. I have a few other miners near by but none in my hex, What would be the best antenna for me?
I'd need to see what witnesses you are getting with your current setup.
I am trying to put my attena up a bit higher and I hope its going to get me more rewards
It’s no wonder why my the set up I have at my mother in law house isn’t making any money .. it’s literally 6 sides of brick and I can’t mount it outdoors !
Attic!
If I have an 8dbi antenna and want to dial it back to 5.8, would that work or would I have to buy a tuned 5.8?
My antenna is outside on a 32 foot pole with few obstruction in the Sacramento valley. For me being in the valley height is the key, building a 40 ft antenna mast in the coming months, hopefully I can get a signal over some of the overpasses between me and Sacramento, if not 50ft tower is next.
If you have radiant barrier insulation, plan your day accordingly.
I’m 60 meters up in a high rise with a clear line of sight across the whole city…what’s the highest dbi I should use to put an antenna in my balcony? Thanks in advance!
6dbi
I put a new 8dbi antenna on a goldspot at a friend's house. Was hoping that it would increase my witnesses from the 2.3 antenna, however I am actually getting less rewards now. It's only been maybe 5 days but worried I need to change to the 5.8 I have. How long should I wait to see my full witness count before jumping the gun and changing the antenna again. I appreciate the help! Macho Chocolate Dolphin for reference
Your numbers appear to keep going up. When did they go down? Aways nice to meet someone from the area. I think I'll start a meetup for us.
think solar panels on the roof would cause any signal issues for me mounting in the attic?
In the direction of the solar panels for sure.
Small towns is where its at.
Agreed! Farming community might be awesome.
Does having a solar panel lessens the gain?
Hi Justin, fellow Coloradoan here. I just had my entire roof covered with solar panels. If I put this antenna in my attic, do you think the Solar panels will interfere too much with the signal?
Yes. That would be a concern.
@@DoItJustinKace Thank you for your reply. I think I will look into a 9 DBI and just leave it in my upstairs window. I have a Syncrob.it I would never buy that again. They are the worst 😞.
For the Rakewirless 8 dBi antenna you referenced, how do you know what the vertical beamwidth is? It doesn't specify on their website.
People get stuck on that number. But close to the antenna it's more like a curve. Don't worry about it!
