Lore Note:
This ship was designed for Star Trek: Fleet Operations (Fleet Ops), a free game created by passionate fans. The lore of the game was written at the end of DS9, but before the end of Voyager. As a result, the game takes place in a universe that is different than the main Star Trek Timeline. For more information please visit www.fleetops.net
Lore:
The Calypso class was originally designed as a short range science vessel. Its large shuttle bay was used primarily for installing large and sensitive scientific equipment that the transporters could not otherwise handle. Produced in small numbers alongside the Intrepid and Nova class ships, Calypso class vessels would survey supernovae, explore nebulas, and run experiments on exotic phenomenon. However, after the devastation of the Dominion War, Starfleet needed to quickly shore up its ranks. The Calypso class's modular systems made it a perfect candidate for refits. On most Calypso class ships, a holographic network was installed into its deflector grid. With its new projectors, a Calypso could confuse enemy sensors with multiple sensor echoes. Additional armaments were also added onto the ship, including pulse cannons based on those from the Defiant class. After her retrofit, the USS Fenrir made a name for herself by defending deep space outposts from pirates and raiders in the chaotic days following the end of the Dominion War. Following this tumultuous period, she became a familiar and friendly sight for vessels founding new colonies on the frontiers of the Federation.
Design Notes:
The lore of this ship from Star Trek Fleet Ops described her as a late 24th Century Oberth class, that was then deconstructed and rebuilt into a cruiser. To that end I designed a ship heavily influenced by the Intrepid and Sovereign classes. While studying Sovereign class concept art I realized that one of the core aspects to her style was intersecting and interrupted curves. This became the major inspiration when designing the Calypso. The final result was a large shovel shaped saucer, reminiscent of a Sovereign saucer section cut in half, with curved sections layered on top. This design philosophy had the additional advantage of giving the ship the patchwork feel that would come after a major refit. I decided to have a little fun with the Calypso's nacelles. A flat, smaller nacelle similar to the Intrepid seemed to fit best with saucer section and body. I mixed up the normal style by exposing the coils and making them the majority of the nacelle. After I settled upon the form of the ship, I turned to the other main feature of the Calypso class: her holoprojectors. I used the yellow grid holo projectors as a base, because it is one of the most iconic visuals from TNG. The projectors were originally described as domes, but I found that the grid did not map well to a hemisphere. I ended up designing a small lattice structure to sit on top of the flat yellow grid, but it needed to be simple enough to preserve the clarity of the grid from a distance. The design process for this ship is documented in a blog post on the Fleet Ops website. For more information, you can read it here: www.fleetops.net/news/item/222-lore-and-design-of-the-calypso

I really like sleek, compact designs like this.
Nice little ship! Very creative thinking on the new nacelles design
this is a real Science ship Love it
this would be pretty cool as a T6 Nova for STO
Mzrts12 maybe.
for 30000000000000000zen
I wish more ships did under-slung nacelles like this and the Legacy Yorktown class. It looks so cool!
now this is how the Norway class should have looked
Awesome looking design! Great job.
Katana looking coolness, but definitely unique, and I like the beetle shell shapes to saucer engineering hull.
I like the design, but Calypso always makes me think of a cruise ship.
Someone has their quarters outside the deflector.
since the federation is made up of different races, wouldn't it be only logical to have ship that have incorporated these technologies and designs
Very interesting design and could definitely be a post Voyager timeline ship although registry number suggests otherwise.
Those big oversized windows you and Samuel are mentioning I speculate were possibly inspired indeed by the Galaxy and Nebula classes but the design of the saucer was also inspired by the intrepid, prometheus and dauntless classes (exluding the dauntless as a fed ship)
the person who designed this must have had that thought in mind going by the look of the ship
How did I miss this video?!
TH-cam!
YOUTUUUUUBE!
YOUTUUUUUUUUBE!
Beautiful tough little ship!
I think regarding those holo-emitters a possible use for a science ship would be to be able to generate tools for use in investigating planets (like generating digging machines rather than having to devote space to them). Alternatively they could be used to project a holographic away team to carry out the mission and reduce the risk to an actual away team.
this ship looks cool
Perhaps the bottom circle is used to attach mission specific pods, sensors, weapons even shipping containers. That deflector seems too large for such a small ship otherwise.
If a science ship, where are some dedicated sensor pallets? I'm very curious about the yellow things. I love the nacelles!
maybe the little circle under the bottom is a tractor beam emitter
Are you guys gonna cover the STO ship classes like the hestia?
Ok yeah I still have a lot to learn on Blender 3D to make something awsome. I'm in my first year. Maybe it would be in STO one day who knows.
Holographic repair crew? You could have holo drones repair the ship in the middle of a battle or even project a solid hull plating to patch a hull breach temporarily. Holographic exterior science station? You could project giant light gathering/ bending apparatus (idonno sciencey stuff), as well as super camo and tactical functions.
Like shape of captain yacht are those buttons escape pods
The windows are angled and serve as the hypotenuse.
Great design starship. Next step in starfleet design 25th century maybe.
I know this comment is late, but I wonder. What if the torpedo tubes are holograms that launcher real torpedoes, previously transported from a buried magazine? It’s a great way to present a more diplomatic vessel while having a hold out.
What an incredible and very awesome ship very unique in detail ,well in my opinion anyways. I have a question for commander and captain of course have you guys seen the designs of Ralph McQuarrie version of the enterprise? and what did you think of it? again a wonderful Trek yards. keep up the excellent work.
Superfans want their torpedoes....notice I don't call yous guys names... A scientific research vessel for use within federation friendly space. No real need for armour or weapons bays. Just enough to keep the pirates away. Jacques Cousteau would turn over in his grave if you had photon torpedoes. And you got warp 9.6 and no doubt long range communication to call the Mounties while you're running toward them.
...or Probes, given they also use launchers and torpedo shells?
8 decks, transwarp deflector, exposed components, solution for shuttle bay, relocated planetary sensors, those 'impulse crystals' are seen on time ships. Could this be a "Historic Research" vessel? The ship would be following the strictest Prime Directive protocolls and therefore be lightly armed as possible, and built using the least "Damaging" technologies when it comes to inadvertent exposure? The front and side aspects look remarkably like a "Flying Saucer"... The variety of features, bulky, spindly would tend to create conflicting reports of size and scale.
That 'step' look on the rear of the saucer is actually already done by a STO ship listed under T5 Fleet ships. So it is actually already done, yet that specific ship does have more armor on the nacelles. So that may indicate that this ship is lighter armored but does carry a better shield system. Or otherwise protected. I actually do love how the nacelles look.
The windows do need to be changed in size indeed, it rather looks very odd to say the least. I however love that deflector, really looks cool on this ship and protected by a thick layer of armor. Yet also here, why are there windows so close to the edge or even to the deflector? No ship has that nor does it make sense to have a window where empty space is behind it and with lights on. So yeah, lights should definitely need a update for the sake of logical thinking.
That captain's yacht, or what ever that may be, looks rather odd in shape. It's to narrow to be a effective ship in combat. However it could well be that there is more hidden in the saucer section of the ship that we do not see here. Did anyone noticed the massive phaser strips? What does this thing fire? mega phasers or something? That needs to be resized for sure.
+SIG442 Only if you take the 295m scale. if you scale her by the windows, she has about 10 decks and os probably closer to 195m, but we don't know how big the decks actually are.
I wonder id the angles plating it ablative armor that slides down
On rear view could the steps be shuttlebay
can you guys do an episode on the Odyssey Class from STO? Seems most true to form from the game (kind of, but there is some woo) Love the show, keep up the good work :-)
It looks incomplete from the rear.
The Registry NCC 74377 comes in before the Intrepid Class and after the Defiant. I think the nacelle style fits that era.
-From the rear the saucer is far too big.
-The holo projectors are a REALLY creative addition to trek starship hardpoints.
-The Front view looks ....creepy like a clown grin in blue.
-Akira is not an advanced ship. It's an old design. NCC 63549...which predates Galaxy and after Nebula
(What's with describing everything as "Bits" Samuel? IS that a Canadian predilection)
Actually the Akira dosent predate the galaxy, the registry number that you mention was numbers from the designers phone. The prototype USS Akira was launched in 2368.
This is from memory beta but it makes sense. It was a prototype fighting ship
They might have been in design before but the Akira was made because of the borg threat and otherwise might not have been made, and also first appears onscreen at Wolf 359
+Skyla Jade Forster (Sky) That said a Trekyards on the Akira would definitely be good
+saquist Also pretty sure Samuel is from the UK not Canada
Thanks for the correction
Thats ok, I just thought Id add to what you said
Cool.
Why is it that the new science ships ( Nova, Calypso, ext.) look far more aggressive with their angular sharp edges than more combat capable ships like Voyager? I think both the Nova and Calypso look far better than a Defiant class.
The Federation adapt Dominion tech/design into a new class
Looks like a modern old NX-01 Enterprise. Like the engine design though.
and how is this different than the Nova???
The nacelles being unarmored seems fine, especially if there is no torpedo launcher (which seems way too rare of them not being present), there should be plenty of ships that would not be going near the federation border. So possibly more for cargo, general transport, research, colonization that will only be working well within federation space.
Though does feels like smaller than the connie but there would be plenty of need for smaller ships between most we see in the show and runabouts.
Jesus guys steamrunner are you serious.its clearly norway inspired.
These guys are good at making me feel smarter
Agreed Nova class size the blackbird us smaller still
The holographic projectors be similar to the romulan drone from enterprise mimic alien ships ur in hostel space blend in
shark look from the front
cylon raider from the back
Nova class
The nacelles are too long, but other than that I like it.
