I live remote on a small island in BC . It’s currently snowing and I’m tucked into my tiny home with a good fire going in my wood stove. I spent the morning bringing wood up to my door wood shelter as we have severe snow storm warnings for the next few days. Here I am watching your videos and I feel like I have some company. Great content as usual! Harvesting birch bark from a live tree does not harm the tree when done properly. You can actually remove a significant amount with causing too much harm. Birch is one of a few tree species that has two very distinct and separable bark layers. This makes it possible to remove the outermost layer (the white one) and leave the inner layer (cork) intact. There are some good videos on how to do this properly. Keep up the great videos. Very entertaining!!! Cheers from nova scotia

I mean folks act like they're soooo enviromentally friendly yet they drive gas guzzlers and all, I laugh at those kinds of people.
We grew up eating a lot of margarine also, and then, when I grew older, we found out that margarine has the same chemicals in it that makes plastic, whereas butter is churned from cow or goat's milk. This is why we no longer eat any foods with margarine. Butter makes everything taste much better - including homemade chocolate chip cookies!! With that recipe, you have to add two sticks of butter, yummy for the tummy!🍪🍪🍪🍪
I've watched 10 minute videos, that felt like they were an hour long. This 50 minute video felt line it was only 10 minutes long. can't wait for the next video jay!

Great video!!! Small tip. You can cut up corn tortillas in bits then fry them. Soon as the sausage is browned throw in the tortillas. Brown the tortilla bits to a slight crisp then add egg!! I'm Mexican we call that migas con salchichas. Hope you enjoy!

You make the tent interesting. I have many suggestions, I will share with you but, I would never tell you it's how you should do something. Me, I would just burn those matresses. Let me tell you about harvesting Birch bark. The best time is during the sap running time but, you can harvest the bark in Winter if you do it right. I know this to be true because, I am 74 years old and have been doing it for almost that amount of time. Here in Alaska harvesting Birch bark is considered Subsistance. I learned from my father and many Native Elders. Below will help you understand. Traditional Uses of Bark: Paper Birch has always been an important plant to native cultures in Alaska and Northern Canada. The bark has been used for baskets, canoes, decorative fans, arm guards, arrow quivers, rattles, and wigwams. Birch bark was also utilized for a variety of traditional medicines (e.g. to treat blood diseases and gastrointestinal aids.). Harvesting of Bark: Removal of birch bark, when done correctly, does not kill or greatly harm a tree. The following considerations should be taken into account when harvesting birch bark. 1. Bark does not have to be harvested from live trees. Because of the remarkable preservative properties of birch bark, it can be harvested from dead or fallen trees. 2. Bark should be removed only when it comes off easy, usually in the first part of the growing season (May through June). 3. A small vertical incision through the outer bark (slightly less than 90o to the tree) is all that is needed to peel the bark away. 4. The outer bark is only a ¼ of an inch or less in thickness. Great care should be taken not damage the inner bark. The inner bark (phloem) is the portion of the tree where nutrients and water flow giving the tree life. Interruption of this flow from the removal of inner bark can kill the tree. 5. One should make a small test cut to determine if the bark is suitable for use. When I was stationed at Loring AFB in the early 80’s. We had temps below -60 f. My mukluks and bunny boots where perfect. Never got cold feet. Matter of fact I just returned a bran new pair of mukluks because they came with out the felt liners. I spent 3 years in upper northern Maine. Side note, I am from Maine and still live there. I have actually seen my breath crystalize on an exhale and look like little ice flakes. Oh Man, tomato soup and a grilled ham and cheese YUMM. BUTTAH is much better for you. That other stuff is just processed vegetable oil and other crap. Jay l love watching your winter camping videos. Reminds me of my younger days, I still do a little winter camping, but the weather messes with the old bones. Awesome content.

Grew up with margarine and use butter now too. Sautee with Olive Oil and feel bad using soy oil, even if I grew up on it. For your Christmas video make some chocolate peanut butter pop corn balls. Trust me, your leftovers make great Christmas morning snacks! Recipe... Pop 1/4 cup of popcorn. Add 1/4 cup of chocolate either as chips or from a bar. Add 1/4 cup of peanut butter. Let all melt together and make into a ball or place on a cookie sheet to be sliced up as bars. 😍👆

Ughhh as beautiful as the snow is, I just can’t anymore! I left Michigan 5+ yrs ago, have been back once 1/2020, just before the pandemic went wild, to babysit my grandson for awhile & I’ll be going again 1/2022, to babysit again…that’s enough winter for me lol Here in California, it’s cold in the 50’s to me!! 😳 But I will brave it for my family!! 💕💕🥰🥰 As cold as it is there, I wouldn’t be able to do anything til the heat in that tent was at least 70🤪

As much as I hate the winter in my older years, because I don’t play in the snow anymore, haven’t for YEARS…but I still watch his videos & others, located in freezing temps, in the comfort of my warm home 😉 at 17:50+ I had to laugh, the ice that formed on your mustache looked like those silly hillbilly teeth they sell 🤣😂
As always another great and relaxing video. For my off grid, I use a compost bucket. It’s like your setup but I use sawdust in the bucket. After using it I squirt the sawdust with water to start the composting process. After it fills, I add that to my compost bin. Very little odor and it composts well.
That was a super cozy video! Perfect camping meals. Love the sound of the wind on the tent. Frosted mini wheat beard..good one! You had the perfect sleeping environment..wood stove going, warm sleeping bag and I’m sure a cool breeze blowing across you! Take care 🇨🇦 ❤️

You can NEVER go wrong with a grilled ham/cheese, and some soup! I like a grilled ch with tomato soup but you need to add milk to the soup to make it creamy. Also I use margarine when I’m hungry and don’t want to wait for butter to soften. Anyway you make it, it’s going to be great!
It never ceases to amaze me how little water a guy gets when he melts snow. Another great video Jay, I haven't been up there since I did the hospital but hope to be back in the summer maybe.

I grow up with margarine myself but when I went on my owen and became a Nutritionists I learned that butter is much better for your body, then margarine I can say it is like putting plastic in your body. Awesome northern lights this time. An interesting description of the frosty beard effect in really cold weather. You forgot to mention that every time you inhale your nostrils freeze up, an effect I found surprising the first time it happened. Thanks for sharing your journeys in the cold and snow. Some of us are stuck in places where it's still 70 F and we never see snow. As for margarine, I'd say to skip it and stick with pure butter. Veggy oils are mostly omega-6 and not as good for you as butter (omega-3). Besides, I grew up in dairy country so maybe I'm biased. Moo!
Another awesome adventure 👍 your gonna luv the Russian Bear tent..I have the Russian Bear UP2 hot tent, let me tell ya,it's the best tent I ever owned..goes up in 1 minute and guy it out. It's designed as a sauna also,never tried it..maybe someday. The tent insulated underpad has 2 cutouts for ice fishing ( underpad sold separately) and comes with ice pegs. I so far like your videos better then other people videos on camping Jay, mainly cuz you actually talk to people I don’t like silent videos after constructing beautiful tents and igloos but no interaction
I my self am a foodie. I love seeing what meals you cook up each video. if you do some multi nighters this season, you need to do a special cooking segment, where you go all out with ingredients, and stuff, on a special meal. I know "camping" is supposed to be "simple", and "easy", and stuff, but I would love to see a video where you cook some thing special, rather it be a special family recipe, or personal favorite recipe you have.
Jay... you could use the tent frame 2x4 s ....... Heck they may already be the length you need or close to it ..... get more blocks and and line level...level off the existing blocks .... and cut your 1st 2x4 to the length you need .... and you can just toe it in place .... or use floor joist hangers .... like the ones you use for a front porch or patio add on ..... it's the block placements and leveling that's the most important.... there's lots of videos and info on TH-cam 😁 have fun brother ... stay safe .... see you soon Boss man 😁☕🏆

Lol! When you cut that tree down and then zoomed in with camera and started talking I thought you had beaver teeth and were making a joke about felling trees. Then I realized it was the way your beard froze. It was perfect. Happens to me when snowplowing with 4 wheeler.
Growing up as a Coal Camp Baby, our Honey Bucket was called a Chamber Pot. We didn't place our waste in a Honey bin, ours went into the out house. I enjoy your videos.

I think the Trans fats that is in a lot of them is more the issue for people. Personally the family have been using an olive oil based spread which tastes the same. Supposedly it is healthier. Yep, that's what Julia Child did. She always cooked with both avocado oil and butter. Butter and not margarine.

Ughhh as beautiful as the snow is, I just can’t anymore! I left Michigan 5+ yrs ago, have been back once 1/2020, just before the pandemic went wild, to babysit my grandson for awhile & I’ll be going again 1/2022, to babysit again…that’s enough winter for me lol Here in California, it’s cold in the 50’s to me!! 😳 But I will brave it for my family!! 💕💕🥰🥰
As cold as it is there, I wouldn’t be able to do anything til the heat in that tent was at least 70🤪

As much as I hate the winter in my older years, because I don’t play in the snow anymore, haven’t for YEARS…but I still watch his videos & others, located in freezing temps, in the comfort of my warm home 😉 at 17:50+ I had to laugh, the ice that formed on your mustache looked like those silly hillbilly teeth they sell 🤣😂
Your videos bring joy to my heart...I pretty much grew up camping and having fun with home made fishing rods and squirrel traps 😊
As always another great and relaxing video. For my off grid, I use a compost bucket. It’s like your setup but I use sawdust in the bucket. After using it I squirt the sawdust with water to start the composting process. After it fills, I add that to my compost bin. Very little odor and it composts well.

You can NEVER go wrong with a grilled ham/cheese, and some soup! I like a grilled ch with tomato soup but you need to add milk to the soup to make it creamy. Also I use margarine when I’m hungry and don’t want to wait for butter to soften. Anyway you make it, it’s going to be great!

I grow up with margarine myself but when I went on my owen and became a Nutritionists I learned that butter is much better for your body, then margarine I can say it is like putting plastic in your body. But each to there own Jay you do what you like. I know there are thing I eat that are not good for your body has well. Lol great video. God Bless stay safe & Healthy. 😁

Awesome northern lights this time. An interesting description of the frosty beard effect in really cold weather. You forgot to mention that every time you inhale your nostrils freeze up, an effect I found surprising the first time it happened. Thanks for sharing your journeys in the cold and snow. Some of us are stuck in places where it's still 70 F and we never see snow.
As for margarine, I'd say to skip it and stick with pure butter. Veggy oils are mostly omega-6 and not as good for you as butter (omega-3). Besides, I grew up in dairy country so maybe I'm biased. Moo!

Another awesome adventure 👍 your gonna luv the Russian Bear tent..I have the Russian Bear UP2 hot tent, let me tell ya,it's the best tent I ever owned..goes up in 1 minute and guy it out. It's designed as a sauna also,never tried it..maybe someday. The tent insulated underpad has 2 cutouts for ice fishing ( underpad sold separately) and comes with ice pegs. Overall I would rate this tent 15/10👍Thanks for the awesome share👊💥🇨🇦

I so far like your videos better then other people videos on camping Jay, mainly cuz you actually talk to people I don’t like silent videos after constructing beautiful tents and igloos but no interaction
I my self am a foodie. I love seeing what meals you cook up each video. if you do some multi nighters this season, you need to do a special cooking segment, where you go all out with ingredients, and stuff, on a special meal. I know "camping" is supposed to be "simple", and "easy", and stuff, but I would love to see a video where you cook some thing special, rather it be a special family recipe, or personal favorite recipe you have.

Jay... you could use the tent frame 2x4 s ....... Heck they may already be the length you need or close to it ..... get more blocks and and line level...level off the existing blocks .... and cut your 1st 2x4 to the length you need .... and you can just toe it in place .... or use floor joist hangers .... like the ones you use for a front porch or patio add on ..... it's the block placements and leveling that's the most important.... there's lots of videos and info on TH-cam 😁 have fun brother ... stay safe .... see you soon Boss man 😁☕🏆

Growing up as a Coal Camp Baby, our Honey Bucket was called a Chamber Pot. We didn't place our waste in a Honey bin, ours went into the out house. I enjoy your videos.

I don't know if Margarine is the problem... I think the Trans fats that is in a lot of them is more the issue for people. Personally the family have been using an olive oil based spread which tastes the same. Supposedly it is healthier.
