I love all the dump runs! My husband used to work at a transfer station and 90% of our first apartment was furnished by totally not scavenging the bin 👀 As we always said "the dump provides!"
I totally don't have a little obsession with coloring pencils. The dump provided me with quite a few, as well as crafting materials. When it rains, i rarely go.
I love the way you put your dump-haul plastic bins right to work. And there's vicarious satisfaction in seeing that attic getting cleaned up and well insulated. Great work.
You are right- those of us that knew what the smocking pleater was, were VERY excited when you held it up. They are not just good for smocking- they are great when you want to do large-scale gathering, particularly when you need very small gathers! I (and others I know in the SCA) use then for gathered skirts and making neck ruffs. They are particularly good when you need the gathers or pleats really small or really accurate!
@@ShannonMakes it makes me really happy. (I know, "parasocial" relationships, blah blah blah.) lol but it DOES feel like I've known you got several years and seeing your progress and your joy, makes me incredibly happy for "my friend." ❤️❤️❤️❤️
as soon as I saw you and phil retrieve all of those plastic bins and baskets, I yelled “WHAT!!?” I can’t believe someone would throw those away, and I’m so happy you pick them up. It makes me so happy to find use plastic containers. NO NEW PLASTIC!
I agree! You did my heart well when I saw you empty the blk garbage bags to take home and reuse. The icing on the cake was recycling the plastic boxes. They can be repurposed for so many uses. Great find !
well, in their defense, most of them are quite broken, which is absolutely fine for us - they're not so broken we can't use them for our purposes, but I do understand why they were being thrown out... at least they weren't in perfectly good shape!
Love that you went to the dump. When we were kids, we would go with my dad and we called the dump "The Big Store". It was amazing the stuff we found and would recycle! 🥰
Shannon, you are such an inspiration! Years ago my Dad built me a folding screen with chicken wire in the open space so that I could hang items on it for holiday fairs. Forward many years, over 40!, and I have kept it because, well, my Dad made it just for me! Im now learning to weave and am also a seamstress doing alterations...always save what I cut off from hems and use them for mending etc. however I have quite a pile of 'fancy' hems cut offs from prom and wedding clothes...SO it dawned on me watching you that I could use them to weave a wonderful insert for the screen! Thanks!
The first thing I thought of when I saw the thrifted wooden entry shelf was how it would be great for a craft/ sewing room. The slots would hold patterns just perfectly then you can hang scissors and other tools from the pegs! Ooohhh so cute❤❤❤
The 'tip run' was always the best part of a big clean up, you never knew what you'd find to sneak out with. One time we found a WWII anti-aircraft spotlight cover, it was massively heavy and mum turned it into plant pot, after she mounted it onto an old rought iron wheelbarrow frame and painted the whole thing white. It became home to the most magnificent old fashioned Tea Rose and was placed in the centre of the front lawn as a garden ornament... one of mum's pride and joy pieces. She had such a green thumb, she could grow anything and everything. Me, I can kill asparagus fern and wild mint, but I was excellent at all the heavy stuff - digging, hauling, building green houses and lean-tos for all the stuff she grew... I was the labour, she was the pretty ☺️ 🙃🐨🇦🇺
Yay for slow-mo, yay for "no scavenging" and yay for great neighbor Tim! What surprised me was the worry about sneaking stuff out from the dump. Somehow I thought from previous videos it's okay to take stuff from there. My best to Canelle, who already had her best dog time ever (except for that "what do you mean -not allowed-" face). Oh and my gods, I'll have to show the gloves names to my husband :))) p.s. looking forward to the year in recap as I jumped to this premiere right from the 2022 recap :D Those are great to watch and give a new perspective to the string of videos one had watched through the time passed.
I pulled some awesome wicker chairs out of those bins, brought them home, spray painted them blue and they look great on my white veranda. People toss the most amazing things. Way to get that plastic out of the landfill!!
Never seen such a cool selection of gloves. Currently snow flurries and myasthenia gravis flare messing with productive behavior. So glad for progress somewhere (said in Eeyore voice)

You make a trip to the dump a cool destination!! All the best to you and Phil and your sweet pup this holiday season!! ☺️❤️💚🎄🔔
I've never understood why public dumps do not permit scavenging. It's so good for the environment if things are repurposed and reused. Less in landfill and people can find things they need or can use for nothing. It's a win win situation in my book.
They're afraid of getting sued if you injure yourself (broken glass, etc), or get an infection from the bacteria/mold/etc at a dump. Not TOO far from us, there's a place called Last Chance Mercantile, where you can drop off stuff you think someone might be able to use, and where the dump workers can send items they see that are just too good to crush and dump. Also things like a half full can of paint.
I can tell you, the relief you get when having a car hanging around your neck suddenly being picked up was the best feeling ever, I had to get new wing mirrors for my Toyota 2 years ago went to the local scrap yard to see if they had some 2nd ones first, while I was there I was telling the yard owner about the ford falcon wagon that was in running condition but I could not get in or out of due to my disability, she asked how much did I want for it, I knew it was worth $1000 but because I did not have it registered that was the stumbling block so I said $500 she said sold and I will throwing the new wing mirrors for free for the Toyota🙈🙀yep I took the deal as that took me to $1000 it was worth. They dropped off the new wings when picking up the falcon, I even gave them the matching body repair paint so when they went to sell it as either whole or in bits they could finish painting the one wing that had a strange acid burn. To wake-up the next day and look out into the yard and NOT see the car was such a relief more than I had even realised at the time.
😂😄😂😄😂 ….I laugh every time you call Rubbermaid bins Tupperware ( mostly because I envision storing humongous sub sandwiches in them and making my kids pack them to school with their lunches😅😅😅😅Thanks for the giggles!
Love the slo-Mo. for the rental, bright side of it is you saved $. Downside is lots of work. Canelle so cute getting her treats. There’s a wood stove in the shopping part of the video that actually would work in my cottage. Maybe some day. Plus your house videos remind me of all the projects that need to done for my own cottage like insulation & gutters & caulking. Thank you Shannon for everything you do.
25:36 -- The stud bays above the bedroom windows have smaller cavities than the typical "solid" wall bays without windows or doors. In the typical wall bays, there might be some insulation which has settled down to the second floor (if your house has platform framing) or perhaps all the way to the first floor (if your house is balloon framed without fire blocking between the studs). If there's any diagonal bracing let in to the studs, it could be holding up some insulation (temporarily) and keeping it from settling/falling down, as could pipes, conduits, wires, nails, and plaster keys. But plaster keys can break off and fall, pushing fluffy insulation down in the process. Water can cause insulation to settle and compact, too. After you "fill" all the stud bays you can from your attic, it will be interesting to see what your heat camera reveals. I'm fascinated by all of your house videos, but especially any with basement or attic scenes!
Could be used in entryway for keys and gloves. Everyone needs a pair (or 2) of work gloves by the door! (The totes are likely Rubbermaid) The sign at the dump made me laugh - everyone scavenges!
They are super strict at our dump (actually now a transfer station, where they crush everything and load it into huge trucks, to take to a distant dump site). About 10 years ago, a worker let me know he would turn a blind eye if I loaded up a huge sturdy wheeled trash can in my pickup truck, but that was the last time I was able to take anything.
The hardware store glove display had me lol 😂! The names were amazing. It's so cute that all the local shops already know the fur baby and have the treats ready! ❤ Corgi content was definitely top notch! Neighbor Tim seems like he might be the biggest blessing besides the house itself in your journey! What an incredible human! Also the slo-mo hammer flip was pure GOLD! 🔥 ❤
I picked up a used sheet cream with gorgeous orange and green flowers. Perfect for a large diamond qayg template I have. I think I will use a green sheet for the backing. Yay! I call the Thrift Store my personal closet.
Christa, quilt as you go. In this case it is the larger diamond template that fussy cuts the flower design. A shaped piece of batting in the middle, a backing piece that folds around onto the front. I ordered it from Missouri Star Quilt Company, they also have a tutorial. I have done squares the same way without a template. I started cutting batting for a hexagon quilt, but may set aside and work on the diamond. Although I have tried a couple qayg methods, this is my favorite. Hope it helps. The templates are for English Paper Piecing.
Corgi! The two Corgis won third and fourth place in the Herding Dogs category at the National Dog Show (comes on after the Macy's Day Parade). It was awesome because there were a TON of dogs in that category and only two Corgis and both of them made it to the podium. I was bummed that they didn't actually show them coming up for their prizes.😒 I don't know why, but seeing Cannelle in the hardware store just makes me happy! (The one where she was riding on the wood trolly was my favorite.) Especially when you guys were lying on the floor. That was cute. It was so sweet that she got some treats at the dump AND the hardware store. I can't believe it's been a whole year, but then again, I've forgotten some things about the house already because you had so many things to do in the beginning. Getting the attic solidified will be interesting. I wonder how cold it will be up there in the winter - could you set up a portion of it to do different furniture renovation projects when it's too cold outside? I have no idea, as the house I grew up in didn't have an attic per se, they turned it into a 2nd floor with two bedrooms and a full bath with very slanty ceilings back in the 60s. Can't wait to see what you do next, not only with the house but if you'll be out and about performing for the Christmas season. Love seeing the glimpses of the shows. 😊
That was a great video! As usual, Cannell is making friends where ever she goes!! Thanks for all the up dates. That was so nice of Tim to hook you up with the car guys. Good neighbors are a blessing. When you mentioned the ens of the year wrap up, it made think that a permanent ,FAQ (frequently asked questions) section might help folks to catch up. Not sure how that would work, but it’s an idea.
alas, nobody is going to be checking if there is an FAQ before they go leave their question about a topic I just went in-depth on a few videos ago, or before they give advice that I've already gone over in one of my many action plans for the house... the Venn diagram of people who check for FAQs before leaving a comment and people who leave those types of comments are, in fact, not able to make a Venn diagram, because there is no overlap 🤣🤣
@@ShannonMakes. That’s to they don’t look for FAQ section. I always do because I hate to bother folks with questions that I know they’ve answered hundreds of times. Oh well. Good luck and thanks for the reply!
I so enjoy watching you and Phil tackling your home updates. It truly is comforting and inspiring for me to start/finish/ complete 😊😅 the updates in my own home. ❤❤
The protruding knobs on the mail organizer are usually used to hang your key rings on and/or other small and light items such as a flashlight with a hanging loop, etc. I have one myself, stored in a box from a move 10 years ago.😂
Re the repeat comments: I found you when I was looking for fabric storage inspiration and I stayed out of house updo curiosity, but I haven't watched the old vids, just started with whatever TH-cam showed me 😅
Great smocking machine. Couldn’t find anyone saying this but it is super important that you use needles that are for your machine. AND try really hard to find original needles. Some machines are no longer made but some are still in business. These are more expensive but vital. Ask me how I know…..bad needles will cause skipped pleats. Great find and you are going to enjoy it!
It takes a special couple to think “It’s a gorgeous day. Let’s go to the dump.”

If you add calcium carbonate to regular acrylic paint it becomes chalk paint. So it thickens it . I use cheap dollar store paint and it works great

I love Shannon makes holidays. 🎄today I’ll be able to play catch up. I can’t believe it’s already been a year.
Another fantastic video bringing joy and happiness to my life. Phil and Canelle at the end heart warming and special. David
I love hearing that, David. Thank you!
I love the accidental slo-mo shots.
🤣💪🔨🤣
The small odd shaped shelf looks like it would hold patterns😂❤!! Keep up the good work🎉, thk you;)
I so enjoy watching you and Phil tackling your home updates. It truly is comforting and inspiring for me to start/finish/ complete 😊😅 the updates in my own home. ❤❤
Aww, I love hearing that!
It will be soooo satisfying to have the attic work behind you, no?!
yes!!
Love it.
I would also love to know how that smocking machine worked.
Yes! This🤞🏻 this video would be great for those of us who love a good gizmo instructional bit of content lol
6:00 the epic music had me snorting with laughter 🤣
Smocking pleater! Love mine and yes, you can get the needles online. Make sure you have the right model a manufacturer to order them.
The protruding knobs on the mail organizer are usually used to hang your key rings on and/or other small and light items such as a flashlight with a hanging loop, etc.
I have one myself, stored in a box from a move 10 years ago.😂
Headlamps in case of poweroutages
Re the repeat comments: I found you when I was looking for fabric storage inspiration and I stayed out of house updo curiosity, but I haven't watched the old vids, just started with whatever TH-cam showed me 😅
That paint project could be a great charging station too!
I love absolute small town perfection of having ONE of a specific machine (in your case the insulation blower), and just having to wait. ❤😂
🤣🤣🤣
Great smocking machine. Couldn’t find anyone saying this but it is super important that you use needles that are for your machine. AND try really hard to find original needles. Some machines are no longer made but some are still in business. These are more expensive but vital. Ask me how I know…..bad needles will cause skipped pleats. Great find and you are going to enjoy it!
That is going to help a lot on your heating bill! Messy work, good job!
I love to collect abandoned wasp nests and other interesting things like that.
yea, aren't they so cool?!?
This channel has become a new favorite these days ❤
that warms my heart so much, thank you!!
the flip of the hammer left me in awe. Amazing
That smoking tool is so cool I need one.❤
The slowmo section made my day
🤣💪🔨🤣
Good afternoon everyone. Love from the UK 🇬🇧❤️❤️
👋👋
I want to know more about the spinning wheel. Is it intact? Does it spin? Is it a flax wheel, woolen wheel?
I have a smocking pleater, I too have done smocking. I made many smocked dresses when my daughter was young.
So lucky on that smocking pleater!!! NGL kinda jelly
too bad we don't live in the same city/province!
Nice to see the progress on the attic shenanigans and the corgi content ❤
These videos are so well put together. Great music, great content, Love Canelle and LOVE THE DUMP. Super editing. Thank you Shannon
Thank you so much for the lovely words, and thanks for watching! 😊❤️🫶
