Vinegar is amazing stuff! I bought an abandoned motel that had been closed up for 2 yrs. No power = no sump pump and the basement was beyond nightmare levels. 1st person I had in was the mold and asbestos guys. They said, if I was up for the challenge, I could spray w/vinegar, scrub, spray and scrub again. They weren't wrong. It's been a yr and a half and nothing has returned! It was an intense workout but worth it, saved me thousands $$
I'm LOVING this adventure you're on, so glad you're sharing it with us. (Makes me feel less alone in the renovation insanity 😂)

I'm glad to hear that. I've always opted for bleach, so I was worried for Shannon. But it sounds like that treatment has a good track record.

Yes vinegar and peroxide kill mold. Bleach does not kill mold spores.

Having a relaxing outside space while you work is as important as having a bedroom that is done and clean. Both contribute to sanity so don’t discount getting a small spot with the umbrella set up before things are done.

Plus, sometimes you want stuff to dry/cure outside due to smell or fumes or convince. A covered space can be a lifesaver there to protect the pieces from direct sunlight, which can affect the process and from falling tree matter. You can also sometimes use it to hang things from or to hang netting to help keep bugs from what you're working on.

I know that my front porch makes my life exponentially better. Even if I can’t be out there for very long, sometimes we just eat out there for dinner time. If you can have that as a way to remember, it’s worth it, assuming you have bad weeks,it might be worth putting that thing up after all. Especially if it doesn’t take that long.

Vinegar is better for killing mold than bleach.
Yes, vinegar is a mild acid that kills 82% of mold species. It’s often used as a natural and nontoxic alternative to cleaning chemicals when it comes to killing household mold.
Cleaning vinegar, which contains 6% acetic acid, is the best type for killing mold. White vinegar containing 5% acidity will also work just fine. If you don’t already have some at home, white vinegar can be inexpensively purchased at most grocery stores.
Vinegar can be used to kill mold on both nonporous surfaces and porous surfaces. Compared to bleach, it can more easily penetrate porous materials like wood to kill mold growing underneath the surface.
Apply vinegar to the moldy surface using a spray bottle
Let it sit for 1 hour
    Scrub off the mold
Wipe clean and let surface dry

We buy the large jugs of vinagar, both me and my grandmother, as it's cheaper that way. We then disperse it to various more attractive glass vessels which both look better and as they are smaller they can be stored in various rooms and spaces to be on hand for use. Kitchen under the sink for cleaning, kitchen on the coutner for food, bathroom, laundry, and then a spray bottle for windows if you're of a mind. It's great to just have around and easy to use for when you need.

When we approach a problem of unknown scope like the water/mold in your house, we start with simple solutions and escalate our actions based on the results of those actions. So you're not failing because your initial response didn't solve the problem, you just haven't found the right solution yet. We don't want to start with the most extreme solution and move to the least if the aim is preserving what is there.

Bleach doesn’t kill mould, it removes the colour, but doesn’t kill the spores. The vinegar is an effective solution and is even more effective if mixed with tea tree oil. It works well when applied to an area, is left for 15 minutes to an hour, and then scrubbed and cleaned off. If it doesn’t clean off the mould fully, repeat the same steps again.
There’s a scientific paper reviewing its effectiveness by Cox et al called “Determining the antimicrobial actions of tea tree oil” in the journal Molecules, it’s a zbit old, but has some good information.
Also, wow that floor looks amazing after cleaning! It’s beautiful

After a waterproblem in my halfbath in summer, the water coming from the floor above, I've very quickly had black mold all over the room. The company who came for repairs used H2O2 40% which is peroxide. The guy sprayed it on and let it sit for an hour. After that he wiped it down with a rag. The mold had been bleached and was dead. Then it was just a matter of scraping down the tapestry and put on new wallpaper. It's been some years now and nothing new came through. Everything is fine.

Strokes, COPD, so many things make caring for your home and pets a huge challenge! My solution due to how my folks would forget the time or not be able to do anything was to pick up washable bed pads and put them on the floor where my mom had her accident. When this happened, all potty training went out the window. Since the dogs saw this as a 'good pee zone', we made it official and washing the pads daily is a thing. Yes, the dogs still go out in the yard, but they have to leave their business card somewhere to announce they are home. The dogs are older too, so it works out for their old age care. Better to find a way for it to work out for both than to yell at the poor pet. Dogs do have nest spots, guard spots, etc. Where I find those, I give what my dogs need to be comfortable in that space.

I'd be wondering what is conducting moisture into those floorboards. Like, if it's not a leak or other dampness from above, maybe it's coming from what is underneath them. Should be a void of course, but there may be dirt or something else conducting moisture to the floorboards surface. I think I would be pulling up the affected section to investigate. At the very least it would make it easier to recondition the boards before you relay them.

The dehumidifiers make your cellar dryer but also warmer - where mold thrives. Perhaps opening the basement windows will allow dryer air to flow through the area. Get all of the damp/wet junk out of the basement ASAP. Perhaps screens for the basement windows will keep critters out! Love your home,!

    • @ShannonMakes
      @ShannonMakes  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

That is not correct. Mold prospers in dark, wet places. Without water, they can't grow. The hotter the air, the less water it can hold, therefore you actually want to heat the air up to dry it out.

I would rather the smell of vinegar than bleach any day of the week. Plus bleach would affect the colour of the wood more than vinegar does in the long run. I always keep industrial strength vinegar in the house as it is better than bleach when tackling mould spoors. Plus vinegar and old newspapers are great for cleaning glass and windows.
WOW love the collection of old lamps they are so much prettier than modern lamps.
There are times when doing that little bit of Gardning during major renovations is needed to decompress from the stress of the renovations inside, plus it gives your body time to breathe in fresh air that has no spoors or dust.
lol I have been known to watch others who’s videos have been over an hour long on reno’s because it’s been full and busy you actually don’t notice the time and if I have to be doing something I just set the alarm in my phone to prompt me to get me butt into action. The steam.mop works wonders for getting the stickies off the floors and the occasional mystery mess. I like to put about a cap full of pinesol in mine and use it in my bathroom to help get the pet smells out where I have my litter box. It might save you some scrubbing. I just loved watching Chanelle run around in the back yard. Living the good life, running around funding sticks and sniffing the various scents. Too cute. It's like a corgi paradise 😁❤️❤️ Maybe before you get to the fainting couch, you should make yourself a patchwork pair of paints. That way when you go on tour if your pants rip in a very unfortunate place again, you will already have enough patched to hide the patch 😜🤣😂🤣

I had to fix up a basement that suffered from mold so bad you could smell it outside the house. If you would like some suggestions here are a few: 1) If you DON'T plan to paint the support beams under the flooring, look up mixtures with tea tree oil. That will kill all the mold BUT you won't be able to paint the surfaces afterward. 2) If you want to have a bright basement (like I did) you can use tinted stain. Stain penetrates the wood and robs it of air and moisture. Paint just sits on the surface and the mold with come back. Stain soaks in and stops it. If you tint it white, it will brighten up the basement real quick. Also, not basement related, if you redo the front porch, use tinted stain. It doesn't fade like paint, and if you need to refresh it, you will not have to scrape and sand like you do paint. You just wash it, dry it, stain it again. Easy-Peasy. Love what you are doing, keep up the good work! And I would sit through an hour long video as well. But I am a crazy person like that.

From an opposite wet coaster to you, I feel for you with the mould. But you disturbed everything; so any spores that might have been contained in the basement moved everywhere else. 😭 You prob already know, but that basement needs to be dried out and sealed; the windows resealed, and the roof and roof edges made solid in order to perm get rid of the mold. Otherwise, just add treatment time to the list of seasonal/weekly household chores. But you’re on the right track with making your big expenditures related to water management. This is a huge project; congrats on tackling it. I enjoy watching your challenges and how you are so open about actual effort involved (27 hrs!?!?! of editing time!!!)

I know this video was filmed last summer, but for anyone reading here: Bleach is not that good against mold. It works some but not super efficiently. And what it worse; it lightens it, making it look like it is all gone, while it might not be, lulling you into a false sense of being mold free.
Instead use mold remover or a general disinfectant.

I fear it's going to be hard to get completely on top of things until you get a little further along in the reno - like get the basement sorted, and that's kind of relying on gutters. And then there's the windows and the roof - it will all be good in time.

I don’t know very much about Wood. I do know a *LOT* about textiles.
My mother gave me some old towels and the minute they got a little bit damp, they smelled like a swimming suit that stayed in a car for a couple of days still wet in a plastic bag. Awful.
I did a lot of research and what I found was that bleach makes mildew *look* like it’s gone, but it does not eliminate the spores. It only eliminates the color (which makes it look successful at first).
What did work was a long hot water wash with half the detergent I normally use, a half a cup of white vinegar, and a half a cup of borax. I do dry things in a gas dryer and I don’t know if the heat helps kill what’s left or not.
In the US I get my borax in the laundry department of the grocery store, but I think I’ve seen it at hardware stores also.
The towels don’t smell bad anymore!!! Ever.
I do collect a lot of vintage textiles, and I did have one item that needed to be washed in that same way twice. It actually does kill the spores. It also doesn’t damage things with bleach.
I’m not trying to boss you around, but I’m trying to save you some difficulty. I hope I’m not posting too late for you to notice my comment.

I live in a very damp, moldy area of the US and, in my experience, vinegar works way better for keeping mold away than bleach. When I use bleach it just seems to come back faster, versus vinegar keeps it away longer (I assume it acidifies the area or something). Keep doing what you're doing with drying out the basement, but go over the spot 2 or 3 times scrubbing with vinegar. Since it's in that one spot, it's probably also a good idea to open up the floor there as other folks have said. There may be water in the floor, whether it's a current problem or just leftover water from an older leak that's been remedied. Obviously if there's a dripping pipe or something, get that fixed. If it's just wet from something old that's already been remedied, leave it open with fans over it to dry it out really well (this may take up to a week in my experience).
Sorry you're dealing with that, it's never fun! But I hope it helps to hear from people who've had the issue and made it through the other side!
