Hi, Glenn. I know this video is a couple of years old, and don't know if anyone has mentioned this. But, you can adjust the ball diff with it in the car. Just remove the cup with the long pin, and use the tool to tighten while holding the other wheel.
For anyone wanting the dampers for their sand viper you can no longer buy the ms version nor the dampers on the buggy. However I found out that the front springs on the sand viper are identical to the MS just not painted white. The rear springs are the red ones from the dt02 spring kit. If you order the tt02b/df03 aluminum dampers just follow the instructions out of the MS manual and use the springs I mentioned. I acquired all of the parts and verified with Tamiya support. The cool part is that the sand viper comes with medium springs and the dt02 spring kit comes with the soft and hard springs.
Now if I could just get the rear tires or something close to it ;)

This is the same ball diff I put into a DT03 recently. I have run 2 batteries through it and it has loosened slightly, so I think it is a case of keeping track of them. I also just finished a top force build and have found them a bit of a pain as you have to pull them out to tighten, but the car is brilliant and I think the ball diffs make quite a difference in handling especially on loose dirt
Yeah, it’s a real beauty but that diff is a pain to get hold of. 😕 I’m not too keen about the stock wheels and tires - though I’ve kept them on mine too. Great video my friend. Watched it all 🙂

Another interesting video, I love when you get in and start working on the cars. Doing this you are going to get more subs and views. The only gripe I've got with this car are the wheels, they don't do the car justice, it's like tamiya went into the parts box and just slapped on the first thing they found. Do the car justice, make her proud, Glenn you know what to do, put on some wheels to make her pop. Keep up the good work mate.

Foam pads always does the trick against a rattling body
The DT-02 ball diff is pretty useless on high grip surface. But on loose surface it's nice.
My TRF201 is just a shelf queen now so DT-02 gets a lot of running

I like ball diffs ff01 had one at took a little while before the ball diff got loose, but it was easier to tune like that one.

I once had white springs for my TL01. They should re-release bat model to TL01 and make a new tl02.
Wish they would Re-release this again!. Especially if the gearbox was made with FRP or CRP !!. The gear box doesn't hold up well when racing on tracks with larger jumps over time!. Had to fit some toes made of carbon fiber and fill in the hollow area where the a arms are with epoxy to strengthen them !. Would be awesome to see a new DT 02 made from Frp or CRP !!.
i wouldn't be sure about the DT02-MS not being rereleased. The DF-03 MS had an official rere.

I have raced many brands of rc since the late 90's, ball diffs were the norm back then too. What I learned is that ball diffs do require frequent servicing and adjustment. For whatever reason, the Tamiya ball diffs always had issues up until Tamiya made the TRF series of kits. Tamiya basically copied the rc10 stealth diffs which is still the gold standard today. Those spring washers are hit or miss, made assembly complicated, and were eventally replaced with an actual spring which makes it easy to build, and more consistent. Nothing you can really do with the older style ball diffs, just keep the power low, and check every run.

Just now re-watching this video while I have my DT-02 in pieces, tinkering.
22:25, I would suggest that the heatsink is for the transmission housing more than for the motor. With a better ESC to run my 16t brushed motor on 2s, it gets a tad warm, I'm worried if I push it too hard on a hot day, I might melt something. If I had that spacer, I'd be using the original motor plate too to keep the heat out of the transmission. I think I might need to dig something up similar so that I can stick the finned one on the bottom of the can.
One other thing for anyone reading this far:
Does the DT-02 usually have an issue where when turning full right, the turn buckle hits the left side of the chassis? When I received it, the original owner had put two spacers between the top of the bulkhead and the shock mount, which solved that issue, but it makes body fitment a bit weird, and pitches the nose down ever so slightly.
I just don't like how it looks, I've looked at that section of the manual, all the various servos, servo horns, and turnbuckles I have and nothing works out.
Awesome as always Glenn. Have you ever had a Tamiya DN01? Still seems to be a few Zahhak kits floating about. I guess they are like the 2wd equivalent to the DB01 Durga, based on the TRF201.

Yeah they need to be maintained and adjusted on a regular basis. I’m getting a much better understanding of them now but I still prefer gear diffs 🤷🏼♂️

As it happens i picked up a new in box sand viper just before lockdown, with no real plan as to what to do with it. I knew nothing about these MS cars until your video today, is it technically possible and viable to turn the humble viper into a DT-02 MS if yo have the budget for it?

What a great looking buggy. But those different style wheels also throw me off. Get the tamiya white df03 multi-spoke front wheels which match the rears, and buy the GPM hex wheel adapters, which come with the bearings. It will then look absolutely ace. And no, I am almost certain tamiya did not make those wheels for the 2wd buggy. Great vid, keep them coming!

@@TAMIYALegends I tried them and they do not work with the Tamiya wheels. They just get squeezed by the wheel-nut assembly and jam. There are some Carson wheels that much but I only found them in black. Check it if you like. tamico.de/Carson-All-Terrain-2WD-Wheel-Set-4
Yeah I would use about an inch of Velcro each side and also 10mm wide by 5mm thick high density sticky back foam along the sides of the chassis which helps to avoid dirt ingress, and will avoid the shell rattle. You can find this sort of thing on eBay
Interesting it has a ball diff but no slipper. Using the ball diff as a slipper is not the best design idea. Means it will wear out quicker and need resetting often.
Odd that the heat sink motor plate is buried in the gearbox and has no fins on it. Why did they not design a full bolt on motor plate like other cars, which also moves the motor nearer the centre line?

I think it depends on the motor as well, I guess a 540 and they might be fine 🤷🏼♂️
Great video.. love the Tamiya stuff.. since you are a legend I figured I could ask you a question a little non-related.. I picked up one of those knock off TT-01 frames to build a car and of course I over powered it.. 😎
My question is if you know of any steel diff pinion gear sets? I stripped the pinion gear in the rear diff pretty much instantly. I've been looking and searching and have ordered the Tamiya factory gears but they are still plastic. Steel ones would be amazing! Thanks for your time and I hope you are doing well in these times. Oh do I love the DT-02 Glenn!! I got it in its LOWEST spec as what I call the 'Oliday Buggy - an homage to my best Mate, Mark Bryan.
However there's SO many hopups available!! 😁 I've been able to add a few...
BTW, Floureon Batteries make a 2S and 3S Batry that fits that Battery Tray snugly! I run a 3S Batry in mine with a 25T Torque Tuned Motor, and she SCREAMS!!

Tamiya has used Springs that are WAY TOO stiff for so long, most Tamiya enthusiasts think it's the correct way to run...
IT ISN'T! The way yours has a little natural Droop when you put weight on it, is beautiful!! If the Springs on your real Car sat fully extended - your Ride will be terrible and you'd have abysmal Handling!!
I try to explain that on the TamiyaClub Forums, but I can't get the more hardcore guys to understand.....
OMG those Springs are so perfect - I must find some! Or even find the Spring Rates, so I can get similar.
Another thing open for hardcore Debate for many years, is Diff types!
I'm a firm believer in Sealed, Oil Filled, Gear Diffs....
There's also some who believe that Ball Diffs are the only way to go.
We're of course, open to our opinions - but a Gear Diff will NEVER work loose, causing slippage and need adjustments.
And a Ball Diff is slightly more efficient, less drag.

Ball Diffs aren't BAD... But they are more fiddly - especially if you have to take apart the Gearbox to adjust!! 😲
If you can find them in Canada, you should try Floureon Batteries. Mine are 3 years old, and show no signs of going anytime soon!! 👍👍
MOST of them are made to a similar size of NiMH Stick Packs, or smaller. Like I said, a 3300 MAh 3S Floureon Battery fits snugly in my DT-02!
Their 3000 MAh 3S fit with a very minor modification in my M05!! 😁
Everything's got a drawback.....
The only one I've found on these Batteries is, NO high C ratings. Highest is 50C.
However I've had NO problems with any of my Batteries! 😉
The ff01 had a ball diff that looked different than that.

If you would do the new 100 Tamiya's I bet the dt02 to and the dt03 would be on there.
Maybe the cardboard is to prevent them from rusting together. Although the plate is probably aluminium so it would surprise me. Looks like a fun buggy though. I'm still looking to buy a 2 wheel driven car. Maybe I'll take a look at one of these. :D

Yes I had to remove and regrease the ball diff in my tgx mk1 after every 1 to 2 tanks of fuel with a high powered engine. The damn thing would spin so fast it flung all the grease out and eventually burned the pressure plates 🤪

Paper motor gasket protects the plastic gearbox housing from the motor heat to extend its life.

@@TAMIYALegends The motor plate only acts as a spacer to give room for the heat sink to fit. Heat sink is then responsible to cool the motor down. The plastic housing of this gearbox is very common to crack where the motor is bolted down. I went through many of them after I upgraded my DT-03 to brushless.

Hi Glen . I have just noticed that the Tamiya Nissan Titan has tamiyas astrol wheeeeels front and rear in gray wearing dual block tyers front and rear. ?? Dual block are 62mm astrol wheels are 60mm?? Also did they make narrow front tyers.

Hello just a quick question I own a TAMIYA Thunder Dragon there is a few videos of it on my channel just wondering there is an awful noise coming from it when you engage reverse when going forward quickly just wondering if that’s to do with the gearbox?

I haven't worked on a DT-02 before so to say i'm no expert would be an understatement but could you adjust the ball diff by dropping the suspension arm on the side that the diff has the alan drive adjuster, remove the driveshaft and then the ball cup from the diff, would you then be able to insert you alan driver into the diff and by holding the opposite side wheel tighten or loosen the diff accordingly?
No unfortunately not, you have to take the hex plate off the diff to get to the allan head bolt 😞. That can only be done by removing the diff. Now I’ve said that I’m going to double check that lol 😂

@@TAMIYALegends i have the ball diff on my Titan, i Argee no need to remove the diff, just remove the cup with the pin and use the other cup and a allen key to tight or loose the diff.
toe out will turn better, toe in will be easier to track straight at high speed.
I think you're wrong I think you need to do it to give it a little more space for the motor to stick out.
Back in the early 90s when I got my manta ray I also had a beautiful sort of catalogue wherein all the tamiya models were listed with great pictures and details. Don't remember if it was from tamiya directly or from the shop. Anyway l could have sworn in that catalogue was a tamiya belt drive model, buggy, not road model. But in the database I find no such model from that time.

Yes the MS is the better spec car, but believe me the kit car runs great my friend 😎👊🏻
I was racing DT-02 back in 2008-2009
It had almost no front grip on carpet and with more powerfull engine it just wheellied all the time. It was no match to B4 and xxx-cr
Yeah I wouldn’t expect it to be up there with race cars, but the DT-02 race series looks great fun 😊
Don't forget the fastest production car is all wheel drive the Chiron it did 304mph. So even in the rc word don't underestimate a awd car.
I do not understand why Tamiya made this buggy? I like Tamiya R/C cars for two reasons. Easy to build and they look great. This buggy looks like a Team Associated RC10. The RC10 is a legendary 2wd buggy. It was just the best old school R/C buggy ever made. I think if you are looking at racing buggies this Tamiya car is a failure. If you want this buggy because it looks cool, okay I get it. Thoughts?

The other gear on the gearbox looks like you need to be replaced it is seriously used up.
