  • I had found this back in stock recently at Tower Hobbies and as soon as I got I had to build it!! I lost the original footage (it ended up going through the washing machine!!) along with another build so I had to re-shoot them after the fact! So an abbreviated build and quick run on the track!
    You guys are all awesome and I appreciate all the great comments and questions from everyone. Really enjoying talking to you all in the comments section.

    For many years I preferred the desert gator body. But I've come to appreciate the Sand Viper body. Kind of bridges the old school look and the full front cab of modern racing buggies.

      I think doing it in a brighter color helps a lot as well The yellow on the box art is a bit blah and resembles cheap mustard! LOL!! I have seen a few in different colors and they look really nice, the box art is a bit flat and blah to me.

      @@AddamsPlayground yeah I agree, the box art is very bland. They look great in blue, black and orange. All those colours go with the grey wheels. The fluoro pops nicely too

    I’ve never been a huge yellow fan except for like the “old School “ mustardy yellow , but this really looks exceptional! It gets around the track beautifully! 🔥🔥🔥😋

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I think yellow is usually one of those take it or leave it kind of colors! I had to just go to the hobby shop and stand in front of the paint section and figure out which color I wanted to go with, I had several in mind. The fluorescent yellow stood out so I went with it and glad I did. It gives it that race buggy look and Glenn from Tamiya Legends had told me that everyone needs at least one neon buggy in their collection and he is right! I looks and runs great. Some thicker shock oil and touch weight in the nose and it will be really fast I think!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Keith! It was a comment left by Glenn in one of his videos that got me to go with the fluorescent yellow. I had said how cool his retro neon buggy turn out and he responded with "everyone needs a neon car in their collection" so that is what I heard I my head when I saw the paint in the shop!!! I am glad I went with it as it is close enough to the box art but way cooler! build the Sand Viper before you build the MS as it will probably pale in comparison! But it was a quick fun build and super easy paint job so really a one day build if you want it to be. Thanks for checking it out!!

      Thank you!! I was really going round and round with what color to choose so i just went to the shop and stood in front of the wall of paint to figure it out (not the first time!). Yeah, man, that's a cool addition to your collection! I totally love this buggy, I also just got one recently. And I already like yellow, but neon yellow is just the best colour there is! Yours looks so cool, and bright!
    It was a cool run, but like you said, the front tyres are letting it down. I put same type front tyres as the ones on your Holiday buggy, it helped a bit. Pretty sure this could become one of your fastest buggies on that course.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am vert happy with the neon look, it is super bright and makes it seem more like a race buggy! I am going to stick a couple wheel balance weights up front and will be trying some different tires up front to get it tuning better! Than a little bit of suspension tuning and I think it will be a very fast buggy out there! It may be hard to chase down a 4wd time but I'll give it a shot!

  • @MarkBryanRC
    @MarkBryanRC ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Oh yeah, great buggy right there, Addam! Also, you are not the only one to lose video footage, all part of the game my friend! I like the way you adapted the boxart look, I think your version looks very sweet. Did you get metal ball bearings in your kit? I agree about the front end washing out in corners, I spent a lot of time dialling mine in. I actually used the same front tyres from the Holiday Buggy and they have much more sideways grip. Also, tuning in a little more negative camber front and back makes a big difference, IMHO. Looked like a blast on the track. Great video, dude! :))

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks, I am very happy with the way it looks!! I am dumping the light oil and replacing it some heavier oil in the shock and adding a tiny bit of weight to the front end. I do think the tires are not the best and I did get a different set to try out, not sure they will go on the rims though as thy are very thin but I will give them a try. Thanks for the tip on the camber, I will try that as well. I think with tuning and tweaking it will really be an outstanding buggy out on the track! I did get bearing included in my kit.

  • @andyrobinsonrc2480
    @andyrobinsonrc2480 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Now your talking! Love DT02s especially the sand viper. I did use to race mine in a dt02 only race class. You need roughly 40g of weight up front weight wise, I tended to use Schumacher stagger ribs on the front of mine tyre wise. Essential modification is to brace the front shock tower between the two shock tower mount point with a bit of carbon fibre or alloy, you can use a turnbuckle but it’s not as good. I’ll pm you a list of modifications you can do to them. Spec on the sand viper over basic HB is bearings, light weight gear shafts , oil cva’s and adjustable turnbuckles :) not bad for Tamiya .nice video ;)

    The Sand Viper has very sleek looking body. I was deciding between this and the DT03 back then and so tempted to get it just for how it looks. However, I went with the newer chassis. In any case, both DT02 and 3 are awesome drives. Similar light front end issues on both.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, I think the Sand Viper has that classic sleek look to it and the DT03 has more of the fighter plane with no wings look to it. Both a sleek and racy in the own way but the SV has that classic buggy lines to it. A few small wheel balance weights in the front end will tame the light nose. It realy doesnt take too much and i have not noticed any negative impact to it with the Neo Fighter, it has a much better drive now with some weight up front. Thanks for watching!

    Looks good. I went for the metallic green on my colour - the same colour as the Top Force. Looks great as I didn't like the standard yellow either.
    I love the DT-02. it was my first buggy after a TT02 and Lunchbox. Here in the UK, it's great value considering it comes with bearings, oil shocks and adjustable bits. I definitely think it could handle some more power, although the front end is definitely a bit light. I used the shock oil in the kit, and I thought it is pretty soft too.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think one of the best things about this kit is you can paint it a variety of colors an it still look great with the stock decals on it! The extras are certainly a welcome addition as well! With more power you will definitely want some weight up front. I am planning on sticking a few of the self stick wheel balancing weights up front to settle it down. It worked well on the Neo fighter as I was having the same light front end issues with it. I love the GT Tuned motor but right now it is too much for it but after some weight in the front and some tuning I think it will be a great combo and be a really fast buggy on the track!

  • @thunderstormrc
    @thunderstormrc ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks awesome. Might need some adjustments to make it fast on your track. Could you make a lap time leaderboard to put the lap times into perspective?

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think with some thicker oil in the shocks and a little bit of weight in the front end it will be much faster. The front was floating a bit on power so I really ha to ease into it. Some wheel balance weights in the nose and it should be able to keep the front down so there is more steering on power. I was doing a leaderboard and it just kind of fizzled out, they were just not fun to do for some reason. I can add the fastest times for these on it and show it in a future video. Should have done it for this one and the next one coming out but I didn't even think about it to be honest!

    Go on *mazon or other such sight a look up self-stick 1/4oz weight. It looks like you have plenty of forward bite on the carpet so a lesser motor will give you more control Try the weights first. Yea yellow was never my favorite color, but it is easy to see. Also a yellow gen one mustang convertible with black top is just too good looking.

      I have some of the weights and will try some in the front. I have done it on others as well and a little bit does help a lot. The motor does have a ton of punch so me not stabbing the throttle so hard! I drove this right after another one you will see soon and it was a bit more tame and I could get on the gas much more! A few tweaks and some more practice and I think it will be a great buggy!!!

    This looks like it’s a blast to drive but that front end does not look like it wants to go where you tell it too, was that a ton of understeer. Do you think that might be a tire or suspension? Love the way it looks and that aggressive profile is just so enjoyable to look at

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I think it looks great! The front end issue is two things I think, not enough weight up front and the rounded smooth rib tires. Going to put a little weight up there and swap out the front tires with some different ones and see how it goes. Also adjusting the shock oil so too

    Yeah you got it!!!!!!
    I like what you did with the wing and wish I thought of that!
    I really chose this buggy because the trf201 is practically impossible to get even though it’s listed for 175.00 on the Tamiya website that would be an amazing deal at that price). Zahhak isn’t any easier to get. I contacted tamiyausa and they emailed me back saying both are models are discontinued ;(
    I think I want the astute 2022 TD2 next. I’m holding out to see if they’re are any year end surprises. Before I decide.
    Too bad on the oil. Maybe you can go one hole in the piston if you haven’t already?
    Can’t wait to see what you get next.

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did and I am glad I did! I love it! The wing thing turned out well, I was going to leave it clear but at the last minute I thought it may look goofy completely clear so I taped it off and it turned out great! Keep checking for those buggies especially over at Amain. They tend to get random lots of discontinued kits in here and there. I would to have loved to find that TRF201 for $175!!! Would have bought 2 for sure! The Zahhak has but out of stock for quite some time so maybe they will do another run of them soon, who knows! I think just dumping the super thing oil out of the shocks and filling them with the thicker stuff will fix them right up, I took a chance with it and knew it may end up too free. You never know for sure until it is all together and the battery is in there! I have a few cool things upcoming!

    • @danielandrews7028
      @danielandrews7028 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@AddamsPlayground yeah thicker oil may help. Switching from the two hole piston build to the one hole can have the same effect. My baseline was the the stock oil. It was too soft so I went with the one hole piston.
      Yesterday I found team associated 40 and 60w oil in my stash. The rear in my dt03 bottomed out so I went 60w in the rear and 40 in the front (I also swapped out the stock one piece piston and rod for the one in the df03 rebuild kit so it’s identical to the sand viper in build).
      I did the same for my sand viper. 40 is super close to tamiya yellow. May as well have matching oil.
      I just can’t get myself to buy those df03 aluminum shock kit to compare because that 70.00 could almost buy a new kit. I bet I’m close though.

    • @danielandrews7028

      Hey Adam hope you are doing well. Well i broke down and bought the Tt02b/df03 damper kit. The springs from that kit can’t be used because they are not for rwd buggies. I used my tower hobby points and got them for less than 20.00 otherwise I would have never bought them. I was working on my sand viper kit and decided to look online at tamiya usa for the dt02 Ms manual to see how the dampers are built. The Ms damper build is different than the instructions included in the damper set. I discovered that the dt02 Ms uses the same front springs as the sand viper however the rear Ms parts are the Blue springs from the dt02 spring hopup kit. Ok. So testing these front sand viper spring and the rear blue spring on the dd03 dampers felt great. Here is the funny part. I put the rear blue spring on my cva’s..GASP! It felt the same! I had to remove all spacers from the rear as the blue spring is taller.
      So in a nutshell with a stock sand viper kit…..Build both cvas with one hole front and rear and put the yellow tamiya oil in all dampers.
      Use no spring spacers
      Blue spring on the rear.
      The longest eyelets both front and rear. The kit only comes with two so two more will be needed.
      Done!
      The cvas are the same length as the df03 aluminum dampers built to dt02 Ms specs.
      Unbelievable!
      I’m going to save these dampers for a special future kit.
      The gold springs from the kit will be used on my plasma edge.
      I discovered the secret sauce and cracked the code.
      The td2 astute 2022 uses all the springs from the dt02 spring kit. It uses the weak red ones. I’m wondering if medium stock front sand viper springs and either medium stock rear or blue hopup springs would be amazing on its stock cvas
      I won’t have that kit until February as holidays and birthdays are coming up ;)

    Great build, great buggy, great video. I still have the Sand Viper New in Box here, somehow I haven't gotten around to building it yet. But your video is a beautiful inspiration. The car is very fast. Do you use the standard Pinion? 2S lipo? Is that even possible with the Hobbywing?

      Thank you!! It has the 1060 which you can run a 2s lipo on but I am running it on a nimh pack as I have plenty of them and they work in all the Tamiya. You can run a 3s pack with the 1060 but I never do as most of the Tamiya kits don't have the room to fit a 3s in them. I ran the stock pinion but did upgrade the motor to the GT Tuned motor which makes a ton of difference and it is not a terribly expensive motor, usually around $30.

      Thank you! For timing the laps I am just using the editing software. I put in breaks in the footage each time it crosses the line at the bottom of the big jump. It is pretty accurate give or take a frame of video so 1/10 of a second roughly. Once the breaks are in I just check the clip duration and that's the lap times. At first it took a long time but I have it down pretty well now so it doesn't take too long. It is too much money to invest in a lap timer for just me running around out there, those things are expensive!

    • @AddamsPlayground
      @AddamsPlayground  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a little smaller and a little lighter (maybe) than the DT03 but both of them get around the track very well. They both suffer from a light front end but I think out of the box builds, the DT03 will beat it. Now with a faster motor they are much more equally matched but with a fast motor the front end floats more so it can slow you down! A few self stick wheel balance weights I the nose usually fixes most of that and not going full throttle all the time too but I find that hard to do!! You are asking the wrong guy if you wanna know if one of any buggy is enough... nope! These are like Pokémon for me, I need to capture them all!!! LOL! In my honest honest opinion get a DT02 and build that with her, it is a pretty simple kit that can easily be done in a weekend and you guys will have fairly equal but different buggies to go run!
