Amen! Unfortunately I went to a church when I was a kid where several members of one prominent family were incredibly racist. I never knew that until I took my best friend to church with me and they treated him badly. He was black and it really turned me off of church for a long time.
I’m 60 now and had almost the same grandfather figure when I was 13, he passed away 2 years later. Broke my hart. He shaped who I am to this very day, I think about him to this day. Never underestimate the power of influence on a boys life to become a good man. I thank God to this very day for him.
My own dad abandoned me and my brother in the middle of Arizona , in the 70's , my mother never re married , but a man named Jimmy ( a black man) was always a father figure to me
My JV football coach was the first influential Black man in my life and I still think about him. He made me a better teenager & person and I didn't want to let him down. Some of the kids didn't treat me the same because of the way I looked. But Coach Pack gave me the chance and I ran with it and earned respect. Forever grateful.
Yes it was. He’s given interviews about it. He said that Old Man Wrigley was the person who most influenced his faith in God. Ronnie Dunn went to seminary school to become a preacher. This song is a tribute to the man who brought him to God and helped structure his faith. He won’t do the song live because he can’t make it through it without getting emotional and choking up.
This song is about our relationship with Jesus. That old man from Ronnie's childhood taught him about the real meaning of faith and love. We all should strive to be more like that old man, a wise and devote Christian.
The best part of this video is that this child needed a father figure in his life just as this man needed a child to nurture. This child was raised to believe in what was in people's hearts, not by the color of their skin. The world would be a better place if people could keep seeing people's hearts through the eyes of children, and not the bigotry of elders.
If a song can bring a smile to your face or a tear to your eyes, then the writer and singer have done their job to leave a lasting memory in your soul you will always remember. Great song and video.
Mannn, yall got me over here like Jai grabbing tissues. I didnt expect that. I appreciate the shout out. That's really cool. I just try to show love to people that are real and hope its reciprocated. That's all we can do in life and you by no means owe me anything considering the content you've both put out.✌❤💯
Beautiful song and wonderful video. I can feel the boys loss....I was as blessed in my life like this young man because I had a Mr. Wrigley. His name was Les. He was one the maintenance men at Dorset Village in Los Angeles, Ca. in the 1950s & 60's. Les was the best man I ever met. Les, God Bless you and thank for you for your friendship, humor, support and wisdom.
In 2020 my Momma passed from cancer. During our last few months together she requested this song (and only song she requested) to be played at her funeral. I had never heard it, and couldn't/didn't listen to it until the day she passed. I cried like a baby. I BELIEVE Momma. And I KNOW it doesn't all end with a ride in a hearse. Jesus Christ is The Way, The Truth and The Life...and the only way to the Father. I had a dream just a year or so before Mom got sick (or really we just didnt know yet 😔) that I was at her house at her feet crying and telling her I forgave her for the past, I repented for the things I did and said that did not honor her over the years and then I washed her feet. Then I woke up. That day I text her and told her what God laid on my heart. I said to her what I said in the dream and she said she said she loved me and she wished she could hear it every day. (I didnt mention washing her feet, she probably would have thought I was weird or something lol) Fast forward to 2020 and we found out she was sick. 3 months later she was paralyzed from the waist down (due to the cancer spreading). I took her in to take care of her. She didnt want that because she didnt want to put me through that, but I said no, you are my Momma and nobody will take care of you like someone who loves you. So she stayed. (Plus she cooked in a nursing home for over 20 years and knew how they treated patient's.) Anyway, it wasnt until one day I was giving her a sponge bath and got on the floor to wash her feet that I realized God restored our relationship and humbled me like never before... washing my mommas feet. She passed 2 days before my 40th birthday. One of the best moments was when I was helping her and she looked me in the eyes and said "Thank you for loving me so much". 😭💖 It wasn't always easy, she was "stubborn as a mule", as they say, but she was a fighter. Always was. All I could do was LOVE HER LIKE JESUS. So thats what I did. By the grace of God.
Exactly! It was about Jesus without actually saying His all powerful name! Everyone needs to hear of Him. Not everyone is ready to listen if you lead off with his name though! JESUS to the end!
It's got nothing to do with Jesus and why do people have to bring religion into everything? It's about the relationship between an elderly black man at one end of of his time here and a young white kid at the beginning of his and what each gives to the other, which would be the case regardless, even if they were both atheists.
Sean Scanlon “I raise my hands, bow my head, I’m finding more and more truth in the words written in red they tell me that there’s more to life than just what I can see. I believe.” There may be other things to take from this song but it is definitely about Jesus.
Sean Scanlon it obviously emphasizes the faith the old man had that influenced the boys life. “The words written in red” refer to the red print in the Bible, being Jesus’ spoken words.
@@seanscanlon9067 you are wrong,, But thats ok In a good way....The old man is talking about seeing his loved ones again, Because he Believes in the scriptures Notice the bible Notice the after life wishes he has , yes the kid is hurt by the passing of the man, But he now also Believes he will see him again,, In the end, the bible is open, Sure the pic of the old mans family is in it, But the Word s I believe is about Believing in jesus words, For whom ever believes in me shall have everlasting life, Its from a true story That Dunn wrote about that encounter with the old man in his own life FACT GOD BLESS And it should always be about our creator
Song is great reminder of the truth of Jesus. Being human isn't about race or even culture. It's about relationships, and love and kindness. Something we need more of in this ol world.
I watched a guy walk into the middle of class one day about 2 weeks into my 1st semester in college in Ireland 🇮🇪 & the teacher told him he was interrupted class, & asked him to leave. I laughed at the thought of him busting into class & then being told to leave. He was a Black Nigerian guy. Anyway turns out he became my best friend & one of the most special people I ever knew .
My Gradmother was best friends with her black male neighbor when I was six yrs old. I am 75 now and I still remember them sitting on front porch and laughing their heads off. I loved it. Jesus breaks all barriers
True love from the heart is color blind. This is heart wrenching watching the bond of love, but cannot be destroyed by a slow ride in a hearse. WE BELIEVE there is more in life. I’m a 74 y/o (white) man from Kansas and we have to love and try to build on trust and relationships every day, one loving human being at a time. Peace and love, my brother and sister! Ciao!

This was the video that brought me to your channel a year ago. This song, these words, this video hits home with a lot from my generation. Because I can remember my visiting neighbors with my grandparents and taking food to families when someone passed away or needed whatever. Many occasions women, black ladies and white, would do the same for my grandma. It was just what you did no matter your color. They never said to us kids” you know , Mrs. so and so, the black lady” it was always their name period. So I raised my kids and now my children the same. There are more people who believe in God and love no matter what but the media won’t show that. 🤨
Crushed me. He taught him something else very special… To believe. There is something more than what we have here in life and that old man pass that on to him.
This is about a beautiful long friendship between this boy and wise old fellow. This is really about the cycle of life, the old man knew he wouldn't live forever, but what this young man gained from knowing & loving & respecting his elder, is priceless.Country is soulful story telling. Brookes and Dunn are great. Music is what moves me, don't care what era or style it comes from, if it moves me, I love it.
Family... one of the greatest songs ever written, one of the greatest bands ever put together, and one of the greatest dinners to hold a mic! Thank you... I cry every time I hear this! I too, was father less...
One of my favorite songs that helps me out. I lost my grandfather a few years ago. We were close, very close!! So this gives me strength and helps me remember him and what he taught me.
My best friend sang this song at my dads funeral in 2015 and now my best friend has been gone 3 months so this song is very emotional and special to me❤️ “The words written in red” my favorite part...
While Kix Brooks was the lead singer on their bigger hits, Ronnie Dunn had the blue eyed soul voice that tugged at ur heart on the deeper more meaningful songs. This was a personal song written about an older black combat vet that had a huge impression on his youth and life. This song won them Single of the a Year, Song of the Year and Music Video of the Year. It’s also ranked in the Top 40 country’s saddest songs and that’s a huge feat in itself.
Yes , Brooks the Singer, had an African American Man who lived down the road, who did become a father to him, he took it so hard , and afterwards he wrote this song for him . I cry every time ,because it reminds me of how I grew up , you go to check on strangers, loved ones, neighbors what a perfect video, for us all to watch and hear ,in these times . I lived this as a child, my best friend was a retired electrician that had a lake cabin next to my families lake home. I had way better conversation with him while fishing than I ever had with kids my age.
The ones singing this is true story about him when he was growing up and this is like his grandfather figure to him, such a beautiful song very well written. God bless
We all bleed red. We LOVE & we DIE. This is a powerful song of love & death. Unconditional. Without the BS. BTW. The lead singer Ronnie Dunn went to divinity school and this is his song about a special Man he knew growing up. Thank GOD he recorded it. Thank You both for the reaction video.
Wow! That brought tears to my eyes! 😥 Such a beautiful story of a good man and a young boy. The old man had lots to say and what was nice.... the young boy loved to lessen. The song brought me right there with the story. 💯😔
I am a 70 year old woman and just watched you for the first time. I just want to say that you two are amazing. The love and respect you have for each other shines through. Already love you guys. God Bless You
You two are remarkable. I like the way you respected the song and didn't pause and babble all the way through it like so many do. Your faces, as the song played, said everything and words weren't really even necessary. Thoughtful and soulful commentary and thank you both very much.
This is one of favourite songs for the car right now , love singing it at the top of my lungs, love brooks n Dunn. Every time I watch a reaction to it it brings a tear to my eye.

One of my favorite songs, videos and reaction couples. I like the respect, concern and love you seem to have for each other. Thanks for entertaining me the way you have.
I had the same old man down the street when i was growing up. he was a vet in the army and made me want to join. so i did and when I remember when I was finally was in i use to write to him all the time and then i got that call from my mom saying that he had past and this song makes me cry and think of him every time because he was like a father to me. Man I wish I would would recorded all the stories and life lessons he told and taught me. I hate thinking that my kids and other kids will never experience this tip of relationship that me and that old man had.
Half and Jai, I love you guys!!!! I've been a firefighter for 20 years in a 90% low income city. I'm a country boy, but I love the people of the city I serve and protect. Y'alls videos show diversity and love and it makes me so happy!!!! If the rest of the world could just get along. Country music is what I grew up on, but I love all music. Keep up the awesome work, and Jai, if Half messes with you, just call me the Big Sexy!!!!!
Love your Channel's penchant for frivolity as in Bill Burr .... though here we are going the other way into TEARS without a doubt ... Ronnie Dunn gives a stellar performance in this Ballad of REAL AGAPE LOVE, Mentoring from a true heart .... a friend a young person is left with only GOODNESS and GRATITUDE ....never attitude ! This what we need more of in our Nation, the world !! So great our Lord is clear in these two proponents in lyrical story. Love it. GBjj
Wow I totally agree hello from Canada I just discovered you guys and I'm really glad I did and this was the first one so I can blame you for making me cry. This makes me feel like he lost his grandfather maybe it's because I didn't get to know any grandparents but wow and when he said the line written in red how true I think those are quotes in the Bible that are written and read anyways thank you so much God bless
I enjoyed the way you both listened and moved to the music and then interpreted the song. I'm new to your videos but definitely a fan of you two. Thanks
The kid needed a father figure and the man needed a son, they filled the void in each other’s lives. And, damn, can Ronny Dunn sing
Ronnie Dunn is so slept on as a vocalist.

Y'all pronounced my last name right. Lots of people struggle with it lol
True story of Ronnie Dunn's life. When people don't see skin color it's a better world for everyone. 6-12-2021
The older Gentleman was his best friend and Grandfather figure .This song also makes me cry .
one of my all time favs. A country classic that makes me cry every time
He sang tf outta this song! One of my all time favorites!
One of my favorite songs, videos and reaction couples. I like the respect, concern and love you seem to have for each other. Thanks for entertaining me the way you have.
That song has soooooo much meaning. Great great selection!!!
Rosalind Jones Yes it does
My absolute favorite Brooks and Dunn ( he's the singer) video/song... a true story and deeply honest!
I love this song! Such a beautiful story!
Storytelling at it's finest...☝️❤😢☝️❤😢 On POINT with y'alls reaction and comments...thanks!! 👏❤👏❤👏
This is a true story.
Many lessons in this song. I cry every time I hear it.
Beautiful! If we all focused on loving one another we would be in a different place!
Stop letting hate fill you up!
That’s what we all need today.
I enjoyed your reaction to this sweet memory of Ronnie Dunn. I’ll be back, Rock On, young people 😎🍑😷
You guys make me smile every time I see you. You are the perfect couple!!
I enjoyed the way you both listened and moved to the music and then interpreted the song. I'm new to your videos but definitely a fan of you two. Thanks
