  • Continuing our look at forging hammers for the blacksmith shop, lets take a look at cross peen and straight peen hammers. The cross peen is the more common everyday hammer in most blacksmith shops.

I myself think that if you keep it to all the same type of tool it will be less confusing ie hammering, bending, cutting, etc. and then all the odd of very special tools at the end of each group. be well and be safe.

I will also watch whatever is up but it makes sense to stick with the style of tool until done, ie. Hammers. That way if we make notes on the tool, we have them all in one place for that tool range.

I think having a mix of different tools you have would be nice over categories, but having a couple of styles from each category would be great to have in a video.

I use a straight peen as my main hammer, about 3 1/2 pound, I mainly use it because of the feel and the pick up, not necessarily because its a straight peen. I love tools, so I'm not really fussed what you show us, just as long as we get to see them.

I have bought old cross peen and ball peen hammers over the years and I use them for woodworking(I rarely use nails I just like to have them) I had no Idea they were meant for blacksmithing but now I know!

Old video and comments, but as relivant today as ever....I was using my cross pien today that I made a few months back on some 1/8 x 1/2 flat to make a fish tail end and realized I had too sharp of radius on it. I know I could have just used the flat end, but I was practicing my hammer techniques. Thanks to your video I can redress it with some knowledge this time.

My first forging hammer was a 2.5# cross peen. I still use it as my second main hammer. My go-to for general forge work is a 3# rounding hammer made by Lyle Wynn. That's one nice hammer! I prefer the category format, but I can see why others (with a shorter attention span) would rather have a mix and mash format.

I'm in the group that will watch whatever you put out. From a pure learning point of view it's probably better to stick with the hammers until you have exhausted the subject. Then move on to the next tool category. From an entertainment point of view exhausting a subject might get a bit boring. How's that for a wishy washy answer.

    Hey John,
However you choose to do it, I think it would be good to add in something geared for the beginner. Like "if your just beginning, start with a hammer no more than 2 pounds." "Beginners, you don't have to have that $600 anvil. You can get away with ....." "These flat bit tongs are a good pair to start with". That type of thing so the beginner doesn't spend $150 on a custom made tool for a hobby they may not stay with.
Than you for taking the time to make and share these videos.
    Rob

I would like to see mostly the more common useful tools first with the occasional obscure tool mixed in. This is coming from someone who is new and trying to build some upfront knowledge in the craft. They could be put in play list in the future arranged in categories.

  • @TomBrownMediaBarker
    @TomBrownMediaBarker 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Mix the tools up, but group them as you create them. Cover the most important, and most common tools, then expand in each category. For example. The three most useful tongs or style of tongs. then later on, add specialized tongs to the list of tongs. The various Hardies available and uses would also be a great category.

  • @jamesbarisitz4794

Judging from the comments it seems people are so happy with the videos it will be a small issue how the tool presentation is handled. Good idea to run it up the flagpole to see who salutes though. Now... more about hammers please.

Shoot the videos to how they make sense to you and, as you go, organize them into play lists by tool group. That way months from now someone can "binge watch" Hammers if they desire or catch the shuffle of videos on different tools.

I would think you might want to focus on the class of tools at each time. E.g.: Types of hammers; weight, single hand, double hand strikers sledge, etc. Gather as much information about that subject, then move on to the next subject. You could then organize these videos into "classes for beginner blacksmiths". Just a thought.
Keep on with your videos John, I really like then.

Exhausting one tool might lead to viewer boredom. Viewers are fickle creatures. Too much in a lump may be too tough to swallow. Try mixing different tools and techniques and having it all available on your channel for the flighty to peruse at their convenience. Heaven forbid they get bored! Your first hand knowledge and experience makes this site once of the top 10 out there for blacksmiths seeking instruction and guidance. Regardless of the manner you introduce the material, most viewers appreciate and respect the opinions presented. Count me as one anyway. Go with what you think seems appropriate, don't agonize over the curriculum. Every vid I've seen has always had great points worth the time spent watching 😃
