    This is my side hustle for extra cash after work. The best part is I do it right out of my garage with very little interaction with customers. I mostly cut 16ga to 12ga mild steel for my signs, but this plasma cutter can comfortably cut up to 1/4 plate. This is a Langmuir Crossfire Pro CNC plasma table.       I pulled a file off fireshare and altered it a little. Took the points off so it didn’t scratch the material. I have a video coming with a pretty interesting product for slats. Should have it up in the next month or so.

      I make them on fusion 360. You dont have to be an artist. A lot of the jobs i do are logos or something the customer provides. I usually have the freedom to add my own touch to them.

      They have definitely been going up. I live close to the steel mills so that might help a little. I also have a deal with a roll mill I do electrical work at. They sell me cut offs for a little more than scrap price.

    Great video! Thank you for sharing all the details of the time and money invested versus return. Looks like you were using a MacBook Air? Does it seem like the Mac products run that system just as well as Windows based as far as you know?

      Windows is the recommended system to run with that setup, but they have options to run it on IOS as well. Ive had a couple of issues here and there with the Mac that I wouldn't have had with Windows. I have another video on the plasma machine ready to upload. Just waiting on one last bit of footage. Should be a good one. Im starting a more detailed video tomorrow on the whole process. Should be more informative.. Thanks for watching!

      Thank you! I did get the torch hight controller. I have issues with it every once in a while. Sometimes i shut it off. Ive got some really good upgrades coming up for the table soon.

    Hey man, excellent videos. I am thinking of buying this set and start my own side gig up. I am just curious to ask if you ever have customers that want a sign that has a copyrighted logo? Example: Miami Dolphins logo on a football helmet. If so, what do you tell them? Or do you just go ahead and do it? Thanks

I would never advertise copyright logos for my business. Kind of a gray area. I think as long as your not mass producing them youll be ok.

      It is. It really doesn't take much. Just 30 amps for the 45 amp plasma cutter. I see you have the hypotherm 45. All you need is the table now. would be a great addition to your shop!

      It so just a cheap 30 gallon husky air compressor. Also have an air dryer/ regulator. Theres another one built into the plasma cutter as well. Air compressor keeps up just fine though. I plan on upgrading once i build a barn/shop.

    Seen Adam’s sign today that you made. Not what I was expecting. Was thinking it was just a flat cut out. Wow was I impressed!!! Everything from 3 dimensional and the paint and colors were top notch! And a big thanks for the hat! Will be wearing it in future videos for sure!

      @@MrClockw3rk depends on the design. I usually get warpage when there is a lot of cuts around the boarder. Honestly im not a big fan of 16 ga. Most of my designs i cut on minimum 14 ga.

      They have went up a little bit. Most of the signs I've been doing lately are custom signs so the pricing is all different. Steel has definitely went up but I do my best to keep the prices the same. Its just a side business so im not doing a lot of volume.

    Nice work. I’ve been thinking about having a side hustle like this as well. I’m tech and Cad Savvy, so no issue there. I’m sure if I get a few local customers the ROI will be quick.
    What kinds of tolerance does the plasma cutter have??

      Yes for sure. My machine pain for itself pretty quick. A machine like that covers a lot of applications. Doesn't take up a ton of space and doesn't require too much to run it. I just picked up a $9k sign job for the exterior of a building. Thats material, powder coating, assembly and installation. I have more plasma table video coming soon. Hopefully next week or so.

    When you only put 2 tabs on a piece, do you ever notice them not hanging right? I usually try to put a 3rd on to let it tripod on the wall so I know it always hangs right and not tip into the wall, even it its not used as a hanger, just a spacer.

      I use 1/4 round stock. I cut them to length and tack them on the bottom so the spacing is even all the way around.

      I usually price the signs by size. There are a lot of variables like size, gauge steel, custom or stock design, any welding or painting. Just have to use your best judgment to make it a fair price but worth your time. Theres really no great way to do it. Thanks for watching.

      There definitely was a learning curve. The cad program takes a little getting used to. Theres a lot of videos out there that teach the cad program. Once you get the hang of that, its just a matter of getting familiar with the machine. If you have any specific questions ill do my best to answer them for you. Thanks

      Sorry I dont have any cut charts. I usually cut everything in 14 ga. I think they have some on Langmuirs website.

    Do you see the metal sign business/popularity trend as just being something short term, or do you think it's something that will continue to stick and be desired by consumers? I've always thought about picking one of these up and starting a small business to do signs, seasonal decorations, etc.

      I can see there always being a demand for it. Everyone seems to be into the personalized items. I dont see that changing. I also my small parts and brackets with that machine too. I actually have better profit margins with making brackets than signs.

      @@SpicerDesignsLLC Agreed, especially on Etsy people go crazy over the custom stuff. Plus once you knock out the CAD files, it seems there isn’t a ton of extra work that needs to be done

      Thanks. I just have a 30 gallon 175psi husky air comp. Nothing special. The plasma cutter has a built in regulator and dryer but i cranked the internal reg to the max and installed an external regulator/ dryer that’s accessible for adjustment. Only needs like 60psi for the 45 amp plasma cutter.

      No issues with but he air compressor. Ive done 20 minute cuts with it. Keeps up just fine. Ive cut up to 3/16 with it. I just got a machine torch for it too. I might make a video on that one day. Its a nice upgrade.

      I don’t typically use one. I think langmuir has one on theyre site for the machine. I normal use the same ga steel so i dont have to make many adjustments

    You should try an air chisel. It will speed up the dross removal.

      Ive seen guys use them. The dross comes off pretty quick. But the back side of the cut leave a sharp edge on it. Im just worried someone’s going to cut themselves on it so i basically bevel the entire back cut. I have a dual drum sander i can run them through too but it still has that edge.

    You need some acoustic wall treatment in your room. It is very "live" and reverberant (lots of echo).

      If your talking about all the equipment in my garage, then yes its more than $5k. The equipment I specifically described in the video priced at $5k was accurate. Plasma cnc table with 45 amp plasma cutter was $3864.95 with tax and shipping. The air compressor I use is just a cheap 30 gal husky which costs $352.03 with tax. After those two expenses your left with another $783 budget for a laptop to get to the $5k. Those are the only 3 pieces you really need to plasma cut signs. The intro to the video was specific to the plasma table setup only. Hopefully that clears up my cost breakdown. Thanks for watching!

      I was wearing it, just not using it. I usually close my eyes when im tacking. Sometimes my eye lids get sun burn.

      @@larryrobinson4288 are you a welder Larry? Ive been welding for 18 years now. I have 20/15 vision. Never had an issue. I appreciate the concern but this is normal procedure for tacking.
