I am the father to two girls adopted from China. Our oldest daughter was from Shijiazhuang, Hebei Province. She was 8 months old when we adopted her, and she is now 26. Our youngest was from Yibin, Sichuan Province. She was 2 years old when we adopted her, and she is now 21. As of yet, we have not traveled back to China, but hope to someday. Thank you for sharing your story! You are blessed!

I was also adopted, in New Zealand, by a couple originally from the Netherlands. At the age of 24, I met my birth mother as well as two half brothers and a half sister. The next eldest brother and I even have the same first name. Both my mothers become good friends and were the official witnesses at our wedding. I married a lovely Chinese lady so can understand how important it is to connect to your Chinese roots. I loved getting to meet this new branch of my family. I have learnt to understand the reasons I was given up and now feel double blessed. You will still love your Dutch parents and remain grateful for all they have done for you but love now expands to embrace your new family connections as well. May you find fulfilment.

I sobbed while watching this, I am SO happy for you! I am American Born Chinese and growing up, I also felt a huge piece missing from my life because I grew up in a small suburban town where there were barely any Chinese people. I grew up rejecting my Chinese heritage because I was bullied for being Chinese. I never saw China as a second home for me because I had very few memories there. It all changed when I went on my first real trip to my family's hometown in China at 24 years old. That trip made me see China as a second home, just like your trip did for you. I learned so much about my family that I never knew before because my family is pretty avoidant when it comes to talking about their past, since it's filled with traumatic events like starvation, illness, premature death, and a harrowing journey to America. I felt like a new chapter opened for me, just like for you. Now, I moved from the US to China and am on a journey with my partner to build a heritage seeking travel company that aims to reconnect overseas Chinese with their roots through root seeking trips to China. This story is a perfect example of the power of root seeking trips!

Hey Grace, thank you so much for your comment and sharing your story. I'm happy to hear that you made that trip to your family's hometown and could finally connect with your Chinese roots. I think there are many more who are on the same path and struggle to find a connection. It's inspiring to hear that you found that connection and are now helping others to find it! I wish you and your company good luck 💖💖.

@@GraceandYJ I am so sorry that you were not able to connect with your Chinese heritage until you became an adult. As a mom of two adoptive Chinese daughters, I was fortunate to live in a city where they could attend school full time in Mandarin and where they could focus on going to a school where they were immersed in Chinese culture. It’s incomprehensible to me that you were bullied for being Chinese and I am sorry that you went through that. Such a wonderful thing that you have made a positive out of such a negative. A heritage seeking travel company is amazing. I have taken both my children back to China with me when they were younger several times and hope they will go back as young adults. I feel some comfort in knowing they have a working knowledge and comprehension of Mandarin. It will help,a lot when they decide to travel to China as young adults. ❤️

I'm a mama who adopted our daughters and also had a child by birth. I am just so happy for you that you have been able to find your birth family and can now have so many more people who love you in your life. I imagine that your adoptive parents are very excited for you. I think it's impossible to truly love someone and not want that person to be surrounded by love. Love- true love can never be selfish or self focused so for me I pray every day that my daughter born in China and adopted by us can have the same fortune as you have. We love her so much- we have been so blessed to have her a part of our lives and I want her birth family to have the chance to reunite with her and experience that love. And I want our daughter to feel all of that love too. It is my dream and I hope it happens one day soon. As for you- thank you for sharing this wonderful journey and isn't it amazing what has happened! It is only going to get better and better. I'm so happy you will go back to China. Embrace your Chinese family- you both have alot of lost time to make up for!

Thank you so much for your kind comment and sharing your story. Yes, my adoptive parents have always been very supportive of me and they were super happy when they heard about the reunion. They argue that love can be shared. You can have 2 sets of parents. Finding my Chinese parents will change nothing, they are still the ones who raised me. I wish you and your family all the best. I hope that your daugther one day will find her biological parents too. Sending you much love!

I am also adopted from china during the one child policy. I grew up in Texas my whole life with a Mexican mom & white dad. This video was so inspirational to watch. I was never really interested in connecting with my biological family. Not because I didn't care, but because of how I would feel. And what I would even say? But watching your journey has given me a beautiful perspective. And gently reminding me i could be possibly missing out on something beautiful. So happy for you, this brought tears of joy to my eyes 🥹❤️

Congratulations! Especially for holding it all together on the emotional rollercoaster! After graduating from Oxford in 1986 I went to China for the first time. What an eye-opener! To be part of the billion person community - looking the same - even though I could not speak the language. China was still quite newly-opened then. I went to a special "Overseas Chinese Correction School" in Beijing to learn Mandarin. I learned even more about myself. My mother was Dutch and and met my British (HK) dad in England - where we grew up speaking English. Our closest relatives were in Holland!

Thank you for sharing your story! And I feel grateful that you have a loving family who accepted and raised you from the other side of the world. I wanna share my story with you here too. My mom was from huanggang and my father was from Chaozhou, a place where people would keep having babies until they have enough sons. I was born as the first child in early 1990s and after I was born the whole family urged that my mom needed to get pregnant soon to have a son. My mom didn't agree and struggled for three years there. Finally she left there with me and after many years when I was old enough to understand things she told me the real reason that made her leave without any hesitation. She knew in that village a grandma drowned her newly born third granddaughter in a big bucket. And their whole family kept silent which meant they agreed with that murder. My mom told me she knew it was real because the mother of that poor little baby spent a lot of time with her working at the same time. She saw her whole pregnancy and saw no baby when she came back to work with a flat belly. That woman was also numb to what happened to her and her third daughter because it was kinda like a norm there. Many baby girls didn't even get a chance to be adopted like you and people who were supposed to love them killed them with no mercy. It's been more than 30 years without a father and I know exactly where he is. I have been struggling thinking of the idea of visiting him and his whole family. Yes, he married someone else and had six kids afterwards. I know there has been a part missing in me all these years and I know he has the answer. Thousands of times I can't help imagining going there ,meeting him, having dinner with him and talking to him .But I can not yet let go of the part that he never showed up in my whole life when he knew he had me and he knew exactly where my mom and I were living. So for me it a NO. I'm touched by your courage and the big hearts of your whole family in Netherlands. Hope you have a good peaceful and beloved life no matter happens.

Your story is truly inspirational. It reminds me of my father, who was adopted as a very young child. He was brought up by two loving parents who gave him a good home. He went on in life, got married, raised a family. Two of his children had children of their own. About four years ago, a DNA match came up positive for a blood relative. After a couple of more tests, we discovered relatives from his biological father and mother. He had three brothers who were still alive, but this was in the middle of Covid and we could not travel. When we could travel again, he met his brothers at the age of 88. He died six months later.

When a child is adopted through intercountry adoption it should be about the needs and rights of the child. It is a basic human birth right of children to know their bio parents and heritage. If potential adoptive parents of intercountry adoptees don't suppprt this basic right or understand that the adoptive child may want to search for their first parents, then they aren't suited to adopt. DNA testing and projects to distribute DNA kits to communities that can't afford them as easily, will continue to help enable reunions more than ever.
Thankfully, the UN Hague Convention and adult intercountry adoptees abd advocates are helping to educate about the realities of intercountry adoption.
When an adoptive family gains a child, immense pain and loss has happened to the child, her first parents and extended family.

I was adopted as a child and found my biological mom and sisters a few years ago and it was an eye opening experience as well. Like you said, there was some negative reasons for the situation but it was a positive experience overall to finally get back in touch with them. For me, my adopted parents are my parents along with the family I was a lucky to be adopted to but reconnecting with that mystery in my life so many years did bring some completion in my life that I am guessing you have been feeling these past few weeks. Congratulations on finding your Chinese family. Now you are whole. Anything going forward is like icing on a cake.
How blessed are you to have Dutch and Chinese families, and they all love you? Embrace both. Soon you b eill stop referring your Chinese parents as "biological" parents and your Dutch family as "adoptive parents." Each are your family. My birth parents I call "mother/father" and adoptive parents "mom/dad." It is so easy for everybody when I do.

Congratulations on finding your birth family!! I am SO happy for you! Their kindness and warmth toward you made me sob. 😭 I'm an American woman studying Mandarin, which is probably why your video got recommended to me, and there's a lot of misconception about Chinese people and culture here. Videos like yours smash those stereotypes and I thank you for sharing it! You have a new subscriber in me... I can't wait to see updates in the future. 🥰

I am so happy for you. You've shown me how to remain positive while waiting for an answer. I'm glad you found your biological parents. Atleast you can say you know where you came from and who are the persons behind you for so long. Enjoy your journey. I hope you will cover another vlog with them. Oh yeah, privacy. I forgot. Sorry. But until next time. I'm a new subscriber btw.
