Sonego knew exactly what he had to do, since Fonseca had beaten him before. With impeccable drop shots and better coaching, he outplayed Fonseca. Had he relied on baseline shots, the match would have ended in straight sets.
I was pulling for Fonseca, but this match will be a great experience for him to grow from. Great match from Lorenzo, to come back and pull it out in the fifth.
It was a little obvious to me that people were over hyping Fonseca. The guy is amazing of course, but beating Rublev isn't that big of a deal anymore. People were already saying Fonseca and Sincaraz would be the new big 3. Gotta give him a little bit of time

João was visibly tense today with all the expectations on his shoulders, only from the 4th set on that he played with more freedom. João future is bright, overall this Australian campaign is a big success for the teenager, now is keep working hard and move on to the next tournaments.
@ yes Alcaraz popularized this tactic. Sinner is using it more. Their ability to hit the dropper after blasting a 100 mph ground stroke is what makes it so devastating The players are so quick that if they have a chance to recover, the drop shot will not work

By real threat, do you mean they respect Fonseca's level of tennis? I see nothing wrong with that. worried or not any top players do that (look up Alcaraz vs Sinner US Open 2022 which Alcaraz won ultimately), but result is what matter. Fonseca stated he's gonna enter Aus Open to have fun and gain experience, just swing big at the ball but for other top players, they have more pressure in ranking. As for celebration, if you beat a tough opponent in a tight 5 set matches (which Fonseca really is even at such young age), you are allowed to celebrate in whatever way you like? Sinner kept his head down because he wasn’t even good 😂 Fonseca is a whole league above him, once he is 19 or so he’ll be winning slams. With this performance he easily will get 6+ slams by age 23 (sinner’s age).

When I say he's top 20, I'm not going by how he did in one or two specific matches, I'm going by his athleticism, his tennis IQ, his weakness/strength, his ability to adapt and think in mid-match. People were talking exactly like you about Alcaraz, then he won US Open at 19 and 3 more since then. Joao has all the right things in place, all he needs is more experience and more physical growth

All the while being 17y/o for the majority of the year for player like him, ranking doesnt mean anything, he simply wasnt playing in every GS, master 1000s, and some 500s to be able to cumulate that many points. But if you actually play tennis competitively you would know he's top20 material

Not sure why everyone is saying that Fonseca is now at Sinner's and Alcaraz's level. He won 1 round at the AO because he played really well and matched up well against Rublev. Show me consistent results against top players (Sonego is good but isn't even in the top 50) then we can talk.
I would say he still needs to show consistency even with the top 100 players wins. He has been playing challenges almost for the entire 2024 season! The win vs Rublev was a mix of him playing loosened up with no pressure vs the most emotional player in court which is also unidimensional in his play style. Definitely the worst one among the top 10 players which he’s going to leave soon cause better players are worth way more than him.

We always we always want to see the teenagers go all the way in the slams. But the chances of them getting hurt are great when they go deep into an early major. And it's pretty disastrous down the pike if they do win early in their career and have to deal with the intense pressure and distraction from the media the year following. One of the commentators said quietly that he doesn't move well enough yet. If they can train him wisely, he stands less of a chance of getting hurt and will steadily develop into a top 10 player. He is so charismatic and his ballstriking is amazing.
Great match! Off JF learns a good torsion lob it will help with people like Sonego who get so close into the net and then cut off the last volley- and that said Fonseca played fantastic- he has great tennis IQ at such a young age!

It takes time and he is going to get there, he wasn't given a wildcard, he got there by winning 3 matches of qualifiers. He is def going to get there eventually

Give the next gen some time. As the commentator bluntly said, fonseca’s movement is not a strength. He saved gas by not even attempting to get the drop shots but that isn’t going to cut it at the elite level. On the plus side he’s very young so he has time!

Two days ago everyone waxed lyrical about Fonseca, the new force to be reckoned with. Warned Carlos & Jannik that this kid could hoist the trophy. He’s out: 2nd round. People are fickle & vacillating airheads.
It takes time and he is going to get there, he wasn't given a wildcard, he got there by winning 3 matches of qualifiers. He is def going to get there eventually

Great game, when the guys are good we have the privilege of seeing that. João could have won, it was in the details, as it always is in tennis. João, always holds his head up, trains and never gives away any points for free. I think he could have avoided playing Sonego when at the net, perhaps by avoiding him with parallel or cross shots.

Give the next gen some time. As the commentator bluntly said, fonseca’s movement is not a strength. He saved gas by not even attempting to get the drop shots but that isn’t going to cut it at the elite level. On the plus side he’s very young so he has time!
