Thought exactly the same thing. That was a battle! Really enjoying seeing some of the older guys like Monfils and Wawrinka hanging in there these days.
I love Monfils but I didn't think he would take this. Perricard's game has been very hot recently and his serve looked untouchable. Monfils proved me wrong though. Very entertaining first round match. Well played
100% agree, I would've given perricard like a 90% chance to win. I watch Djokovic v Monfils and Perricard v Kyrgios consecutively and the Djoker Monfils match looked like a senior's league in comparison. Guess they're just more methodical
Monfils returns are too good today. the problem with Perricard is he isn’t good at breaking the opponent serve games. Rely totally on the serve isn’t enough and never enough.
I totally agree. Tbh I gave GMP almost 100% certainty to win this match because he has looked so good recently. But Monfils has been on incredible form this year. At his age, I really thought he(Monfils) would be tired after just winning a tournament on Saturday. But he proved me and a lot of people wrong. Monfils not even facing a single break point in his service game in a five set match is absolutely incredible!
@@JohnBopape-o1yNot true about him playing like top 1000. He's always been at least top 100 in both quality and form. Otherwise, you'd see lots of one-sided losses with 6-0s.
@ true, his level is always decent but when he's really on, it's something else - and that level has been a bit illusive for him to bring even 50% of the time I'd say. There are a couple of matches with him playing Nishikori (one win and one loss) that are just incredible.
Djokovic plays like this a lot too. These old guys have to conserve energy in these five set matches. They can’t go all out like they used to do. Very smart on their part.
I was thinking the same in the 3rd set, felt like monfils could made some faster shots or risking more but he looked more patient if he knew this match would last more time
Yeah. With experience and minimal injuries, he will improve his game. But Monfils is playing better so far. Had he played like this all his career, he might have won way more titles.
What a match. What a lovely exchange at the net. Perricard has such an electrifying game, appears to a bright prospect. Monfis is doing so amazing even at this age. Kudos 👏
this was by the far the most enticing first round matchup on paper and boy did it not disappoint! so evenly matched, though im still pleasantly surprised to see Monfils win against a guy with this big of a serve on this fast of a surface.
At 38 years old it's crazy to think that the sky is still the limit for Monfils. I fully believe he has the fitness, power, and will to beat anyone and win a GS, as wild as that sounds. It's just always a matter of staying mentally there.
What an incredible couple of weeks for Monfils. The best I have seen him play in many years. 🙌🏼 I think we will be watching Perricard for MANY years to come.
I hope this doesn't jinx his participation on the ATP tour for years to come because he is a really exciting prospect. Too often we think that some guy is the next big thing and then he ends up being Nick Kygrios
Many people were writing off Gael, but i know he isn't done just yet. Mpetshi is a real star in the making. He will only learn from this battle. What a match😮
wow. absolutely incredible. what a treat for those who got to watch live. over the moon that monfils has been able to get back to this level at this age and after terrible injury. what an absolute treasure of a tennis player
Monfils was taking so much pace off many of the rally shots, not giving Perricard a chance to tee off with the groundstrokes. Usually Monfils is one of the hardest hitters.
Perricard has outstanding hands at the net and an instinct to get to it with no fear. Huge forehand, reliable one handed backhand....this guy is no serve bot. Great match, great composure by both players.
@@dewman7477 not sure, I had just read that Monfils is the oldest winner of a tournament since 1977. When Federer did win his last title, he was probably a few months younger than Monfils is now.
Monfils is and always has been a great tennis player whose accolades don’t match his talents, but Perricard is danger lurking for every other top tennis player. in a year or so he will be dominating.
wow, Wow, WOW! What a match! Monfils is one of the cleverest players, not mention one the fastest ever around the court. G M-P is a force to be reckoned with -- a giant- killer. So sad he was knocked out so early . .
"17-years his junior" said the commentator and he was right! This Australian Grand Slam is a battle between youngsters and oldsters. Monfils showed that age also means experience. We'll know soon enough, who's has the edge, the older players or the new guns......
This was one helluva of a match...the wily veteran n the powerful young contender! In the end Gael's court savvy n his 'wheels' won this thoroughly exciting n entertaining match❤❤❤
People acting like GMP was some unstoppable tier player lmaoo. He has an insane amount still to work on ground stroke wise and return wise. Monfils exposed that. Can’t just have a serve
Mpetsi needs to develop his grown strokes to be as powerful and consistent. Because Grand slam matches are longer. Consistency is key, not only the serve. I believe he'll come on top of the game eventually when he works on consistent groundstrokes. But wow Congrats to Monfils❤
I can’t believe I’m crying! Every time I watch Gael I keep thinking maybe it will be his last. So, I’m obviously overjoyed when he wins because it means I get to see him again next round. Vive la Monf ❤
GAEL that was extra ordinary. I had no idea with the force and power of your opponent how the outcome would be. I doubted if you would be able to hold your own against MP, you proved us wrong. Congratulations 🎊🎈🎉 🎉super Gael💪💪💪💪😍
Great to see some one actually having volleying in majority of there game he’s going to be a problem going forward especially on grass if he continues to improve
I said it when GMP beat Shelton that service is not enough. Some folks said it literally is enough. lol. Yeah maybe against another service. But unless you play just as well when they return the service your chances drop dramatically. Good win Monfils you’re not done yet and these young folks shouldn’t disrespect you. Let’s go!!!
This is an insane matchup for the first round, for both of these guys
yes, its a quarterfinal equivalent at the least

Mpetshi was solid playing indoors. The AO outdoor court must have affected his serves. We didn't see his explosive serves here.
I knew Monfils would win even before watching the video since AO likes to put the winner on the thumbnail.
Monfils legendary defender. Turning defense to offense

THANK YOU AO FOR ALWAYS SHOWING THE HANDSHAKE! ITS SO IMPORTANT AND SATISFYING TO SEE THE SPORTSMANSHIP OR NOT AT THE END! 🎾🎾🎾
A 38yr old beating a 21yr old in a best-of-five that went the distance, let that sink in. And not just any rookie, but Perricard, an amazing talent.
We're lucky to have him still around
perritard is a clown
Yea monfils just had crazy athleticism in his prime, he’s probably the only 40 year old that could play 5 sets and win against a 21 year old.
that embrace and chat at the end speaks volumes of monfils' character. you know he was propping and urging on his younger compatriot
Once he starts sticking his volleys he will be Trouble.
MonFils played very strategic. Never went for the big shot, saved energy. Incredible.

What a match. Legacy game for Monfils.
I loved the show boat Monfils. He is equally as entertaining without the trick shots. His court coverage is astounding.
Monfils must be like Kobe to Mpetshi. A star and countryman he admired growing up.
