- Today, Mary Miles Minter is mostly known for her involvement in the famous William Desmond Taylor murder case. At the time when this film `The Eyes of Julia Deep' (1918) was filmed, this was all ahead of her. She was a bright up-and-coming star.
When Mary Pickford departed Paramount Studios to form United Artists with Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks, it was this second Mary who the studio chose to be Pickford's successor, reputedly at Pickford's own suggestion.
She never attained the same level of fame as her successor, and retired from filmmaking when her Paramount contract expired in 1923.
She has a very natural screen style unlike many of her contemporaries who over did it and are dated. Its sad her career got derailed.
She does. Very contemporary, really. Also a kind of Lee Remick quality to her.
This is a great example of why MMM was so popular during the post WWI years; shows that she was a skilled actress. Want to add this film to my collection!

A company named Sunrise Silents had several of her films out on DVD, but unfortunately they have closed down. Few of her films have survived, and even fewer are available to buy. It's such a shame.
It's great to see this vintage film footage. She really is best remembered for the WDT murder case. Too bad, as she could have had more of a film career.
There is a strong chance that she's the one who killed him. It stands to reason that that is why she'd be remembered. If not her, her mother.
Today (April 2) is her birthday. It's sadly tragic that her career was sacfrificed to the William Desmond Taylor murder mystery.
I wonder whether her not knowing the difference between a revolver and a semi automatic had plot significance later on?

Personally, I think it was her mother. But there is no real solution. I can name a half dozen suspects and that still wouldn't be all of them.
