I am a visual learner, and this explanation is the best I have ever seen. I am experiencing a problem of the fan not coming on a 1999 Saturn SC2 coupe. I had to let it idle for a long period of time because I was getting ready to drain the automatic transmission fluid and do a filter change. It caused the coolant to boil and overflow. I have been watching other videos on how to diagnose the problem, but your video is the one that explained it best on how to figure out what was not working so I didn't spend money buying parts that I didn't need. Thank you, brother.
when you pulled the cooling fan relay off and tested the switch inside the thing by giving it a charge..... that was awesome. I love that even though you didnt need to do that you were still willing to show us another technique. Just found out today that my radiator fan stopped working. So time to have some fun and start diagnosing the cooling sytem. Thank you so much oldschool.

Teachers are told to teach a lot of wrong history and other stuff as well. He has way to much common sense to teach lies. He would however be great at doing what he is doing now but at a higher level i think he helps thousands yearly. Pretty much everything i check science wise or history when i dig very deep i find they lie about pretty much everything we were taught. For example Nicola Tesla we never learned about and he was the smartest guy i've ever heard of a hundred times over. Instead we hear about freemason sellouts who steal others works and ideas and patents and they got the credit. For instance did you know electric cars were around in 1830's but wasn't practical till 1870's or so. But then Ford motor company bribed Edison scum bag who stole patents and killed a couple people at least who were suing him. And basically Ford bribed Edison by paying off since Ford had assembly line and nobody could compete and they killed the electric car that could get 100 miles per charge. They also had steem cars and they killed everything because later they started finding oil in texas at that time as well. So I'm sure the oil industry worked with Ford to suppress technology for over a hundred years. Just like GM did with their electric cars way before Tesla when they crushed a bunch of great working electric cars. Who killed the electric cars if your curious. Also Kepler stole work, Edison stole and was horrible towards Tesla. On and on and on when you look stuff up. Even Hitler and the gunshot and cyanide death in 45 was wrong. When i read they burned his body twice after his death in a hour i knew they were hiding the truth. I have been checking a lot of TH-cam videos to solve my Civic 1999 ex overheating problem for quite long time by myself. I was discouraged not to be able to find the cause. I feel that I finally found the real how-to instruction for "a home made mechanic want to be". I will take your step by step instruction to solve the fan problem. oldskool funk really do appreciate all the help. I was told by a mechanic shop to trash my 1994 nissan maxima after they put in a radiator. They told me it was a blown head gasket and wasn't worth fixing. I have a broke leg and couldn't do the diagnosis on the engine. I kept the car in the driveway and did a lot of research and you were spot on. Thank you so much. Joe

+sexylitehaiti Mine is a 97 Mercury Tracer, Just replaced temp. sensor (and sending unit - reason I done it because my gauge was reading high and acting sporadic ). My temp. gauge typically only runs about a 1/3 of the way over. I let it run till it was about 1/2 or slightly passed and it had not come on. I wondered if it might be even as you described-that is, it won't kick in till it get further over - out of my comfort zone - dont like the "close to overheating" point :). I can kick it on with the A/C and a little ago I straight wire the fan to a switch, but with the new sensor I thought I could eliminate that but maybe not. Don't typically require the fan, but in stop and go conditions need it.

oldskool funk has excellent instructional skills. This is a good start-to-finish diagnosis video. These tests are a great place to start and eliminate common problems before attempting leak & block testing, which involves renting/purchasing expensive pressure testing equipment (among other things) & hunting down the high-dollar adapters for the cap & radiator filler neck. One more thing... I want to share my experience testing the sensor on the stove, because I only got accurate tests by supporting the sensor around the plastic or insulator parts and not allowing the metal components of the sensor to come into direct electrical contact with any other metal (including the cooking pot). Also, my multimeter doesn't auto-range. If I remember correctly, I set it to 200 Ohm and it seemed to work fine. That's all! Great video.

simpler way to find if your engine coolant temperature(ECT SENSOR) is bad after checking fan and relay is good,and if you have an older model like yours before next step you can unplug the fan switch and connect the two pin(shortening the circuit and the fan should comes on regardless of engine temp,if not switch is bad,if OK then either disconnect it while engine running hot or cold ,your fan should comes on if not it is bad or turn the AC and your fan should immediately comes on,if not the sensor is bad how ever on 97 or 98 and newer there are not two different sensors,the ECT and fan switch are combined in one and ECT does the job of both

Thanks Oldskook Funk, the task of teaching others the mechanics of car mechanics is a gift you have for sure. I enjoyed seeing how a non operating fan can cause havoc to the car. Thanks a lot man, that's exactly what my Mitsubishi Galant problem is. I already replace the thermostat. The fan is directly connected to the power, so its always on when I bought it last year. Now I want to put this back to it's original state. I will try to test the sensor probably tomorrow, I just call in for the day now. Helps me alot. Thanks again. GOD Bless you...

Awesome video! I'm no mechanic but I do what I can to keep my and my daughter's vehicles running as much as I can before taking it to a shop. It's also good to know what I'm dealing with if I need to take it to be fixed. Your video is informative, easy to follow, and it shows the why as well as the how. Awesome video, thanks! I just followed these suggestions to diagnose my radiator fan failure. Turns out the fan was bad, but I was able to make sure relays and other components were good.
Great job breaking down the entire cooling system sir? I've had a temperature problem for a few weeks. Temp goes above the usual midway point. Have to run the AC to get the 2nd fan running to keep temps down. *checked thermostat - removed it(just takes longer to go up and still overshoots notmal temp). *checked for leaks - none. *ckecked water pump - ok but still replaced After watching your vid I used my multimeter to check the water temps through the rad cap.Started car. Fan turns on at 96C and off 89C. Both are about 10C above what the workshop manual says. So I'll get a new sensor and go from there. Again GREAT video. You got a new subscriber.

Thought you did a really admirable job! Good trouble shooting sequence. Now, a short comment: If I was TS this problem, and, when at operating temperature I saw the Fan Switch to still be "open," I would have taken it out and "lightly" passed the flame over the "barrel" of that sensor. (and not used the water). It would have either quickly closed, or not. There was a 95% chance that it was your problem. Do you get my drift? Seems it would save a step. Thought your meter use was excellent. You have a good, easy way of teaching how to do something - please keep up the good work. Thanks for the video.

God bless, I was this dealing with this this past weekend lol, went to the Logan junk and pulled 4 thermo switch just to see but I ended up hooking a power switch to the fan so I van turn it on manually ,but now after watching this I'm gona do it the right way. Right on Mr Sawvyeej, Logan Heights in San Diego? I just drove through there yesterday past Mini trucks Junk Yard (used to go there all the time lol). I use to rig up and bypass the fans on cars a lot, and would do it again if I could not figure out the problem lol. nothing wrong with a temp fix.

I'm just know really learning electrical stuff cause of course the newer the car the more computers, sensors, wiring and more come with it. I've been dealing with 2010 aveo and at this point if I wasn't my mom's car I would kicked it down the road. however I watched this video cause my 2000 Plymouth grand Voyager over heated yesterday in traffic with the wife and my 4 kids with me. I discovered the fans not coming on, not even when I turned the a/c on, which of course they should immediately turn on when a/c is turned on. I was wondering how to figure what going on. u just saved me time, $ and most likely my sanity. so thanx my brother and my God bless u every day. ur saint to someone like me. thank you very much

I want to share my experience testing the sensor on the stove, because I only got accurate tests by supporting the sensor around the plastic or insulator parts and not allowing the metal components of the sensor to come into direct electrical contact with any other metal (including the cooking pot). Also, my multimeter doesn't auto-range. If I remember correctly, I set it to 200 Ohm and it seemed to work fine. That's all! Great video.

Great troubleshooting!....This helped me get my 92 accord diagnosed, as i had thought it was the ECT Switch. These tests confirmed it.

simpler way to find if your engine coolant temperature(ECT SENSOR) is bad after checking fan and relay is good,and if you have an older model like yours before next step you can unplug the fan switch and connect the two pin(shortening the circuit and the fan should comes on regardless of engine temp,if not switch is bad,if OK then
either disconnect it while engine running hot or cold ,your fan should comes on if not it is bad
or turn the AC and your fan should immediately comes on,if not the sensor is bad
how ever on 97 or 98 and newer there are not two different sensors,the ECT and fan switch are combined in one and ECT does the job of both

Thanks a lot man, that's exactly what my Mitsubishi Galant problem is. I already replace the thermostat. The fan is directly connected to the power, so its always on when I bought it last year. Awesome video, thanks! I just followed these suggestions to diagnose my radiator fan failure. Turns out the fan was bad, but I was able to make sure relays and other components were good.
Great job breaking down the entire cooling system sir? I've had a temperature problem for a few weeks. Temp goes above the usual midway point. Have to run the AC to get the 2nd fan running to keep temps down.
*checked thermostat - removed it(just takes longer to go up and still overshoots notmal temp).
*checked for leaks - none.
*ckecked water pump - ok but still replaced
After watching your vid I used my multimeter to check the water temps through the rad cap.Started car. Fan turns on at 96C and off 89C. Both are about 10C above what the workshop manual says.
So I'll get a new sensor and go from there.

Thought you did a really admirable job! Good trouble shooting sequence. Now, a short comment: If I was TS this problem, and, when at operating temperature I saw the Fan Switch to still be "open," I would have taken it out and "lightly" passed the flame over the "barrel" of that sensor. (and not used the water). It would have either quickly closed, or not. There was a 95% chance that it was your problem. Do you get my drift? Seems it would save a step.

I used a hair dryer on the sensor connected to the tester and confirmed no resistance on the tester

Right on Mr Sawvyeej, Logan Heights in San Diego? I just drove through there yesterday past Mini trucks Junk Yard (used to go there all the time lol). I use to rig up and bypass the fans on cars a lot, and would do it again if I could not figure out the problem lol. nothing wrong with a temp fix.

That was the most helpful video on this, the problem was a bad or loose connector, when it put it all back it worked fine. But I know it is one of the connectors next time it fails. great video.

It's a good tutorial. Although I don't think I would go through all that hassel of testing the fan switch, just replace it it's cheap enough.

I'm just know really learning electrical stuff cause of course the newer the car the more computers, sensors, wiring and more come with it. I've been dealing with 2010 aveo and at this point if I wasn't my mom's car I would kicked it down the road. however I watched this video cause my 2000 Plymouth grand Voyager over heated yesterday in traffic with the wife and my 4 kids with me. I discovered the fans not coming on, not even when I turned the a/c on, which of course they should immediately turn on when a/c is turned on. I was wondering how to figure what going on. u just saved me time, $ and most likely my sanity. so thanx my brother and my God bless u every day. ur saint to someone like me. thank you very much
