2022 Nissan Frontier Pro-4X vs. 2021 Jeep Gladiator Texas Trail: Off-Road 101

  • The midsize pickup truck segment is heating up once again and longtime holdout, Jeep, has stepped up to the plate with the JL Wrangler-based Gladiator. While its frame is unique to the Gladiator, allowing exceedingly more towing capacity than the Wrangler, the Gladiator is in all appearances a Wrangler with a truck bed.
    The Nissan Frontier has soldiered on with only cosmetic updates for far too long and for the 2022 model year gets a full makeover. Riding on a modified version of the outgoing truck’s frame, but with all new interior and exterior, this is a bold new Frontier. The 2022 Nissan Frontier was also named The Midsize Pickup Truck of Texas at this event as well.
    How do these two midsize offerings stack up against the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma we reviewed last week? Watch to find out!
    Here are some quick stats on the 2022 Nissan Frontier:
    • 3.8L Direct Injection V6
    • 9-speed Automatic Transmission

    2023 Pro 4x owner here. I love the truck for all the reasons you said. Nissan never set out for the Frontier to be THE best midsize truck, but wanted to make a truck that does everything competently which it does exactly that.

    I've owned multiple Jeeos for almost 20 years. The quality and value jeeps going down, especially with the Gladiator.
    Not only is the Gladiator a horrible truck, it also sucks as an offroader until you dump another 40k into it to bob the bed, add a huge suspension kit and tires due to the breakover angle, and swap out the axles for actual strong ones.
    Not that the Frontier is going to be very good offroad no matter what you do to it, but at least it is going to be way better at every day truck things.

    The Texas Trail is built off a Willys with some more luxury and offroad in mind vs. a base model. You guys forgot to mention that the Gladiator has a limited slip diff that will outperform the Frontier anywhere along with its solid axles. The LSD will do better on dirt, mud, sand, and snow. I took my Wrangler with that same LSD through some sand dunes, snow, and deep mud. In that configuration, that Gladiator will outperform that Frontier through pretty much anything.

    • @GTGarageTalk
      @GTGarageTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Don't get us wrong, we liked the Jeep... its price for options just seemed a little heavy for us when comparing to the others in the segment.
      And as great as an LSD can be, it is no replacement for a true locker.

    • @victorandrade7940
      @victorandrade7940 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GTGarageTalk I agree, the Gladiator is super pricey. The rear locker is a low speed locker. Use would be very limited compared to an full time LSD. You would get far more use out of the LSD vs. the locker. I never needed a locker and I went through some pretty tough trails. The articulation was far more important. In my opinion. I saw a TRD Pro running on two wheels vs. all the Jeeps on all 4s. Open Diffs. No LSD or lockers.

    • @GTGarageTalk
      @GTGarageTalk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ve just got a sour taste in my mouth after getting stuck in my 07 Silverado with an Eaton G80 automatic “locker” that I just want the option to control it myself.
      But you’re right. The Jeep is a total package.

    • @victorandrade7940

      @@GTGarageTalk I took my Jeep in for service and I got stuck in a 4x4 Ram 1500 loaner. I was stuck in very little mud and rain. Immediately wanted to return the RAM and get back into my Jeep. I live 5 minutes away from Pismo Beach, CA. Very well known place in CA for the dunes. I really would take it a step further and test out the LSD long term. I think you guys will change your mind. I was never a "Jeep" guy. But they're so much fun. I've had a JL and now a JT. I've never tried out a base model without LSD and open diff. But Ive been out with JK Rubicons that got stuck with lockers. We had to use winches to get them out.

  • @Grodd70
    @Grodd70 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love my Gladiator (Rubicon) I 100% agree with comment that the Texas Trail or Willys should have a rear locker. Tacoma, Frontier Ranger and Colorado all with their "off road packages" have a rear locker. Some will say Mojave, which does have a rear locker along with suspension ect. but it is the exact same price as my Rubicon. Jeep needs a "cheaper" model than either of those with a rear locker and even if you don't get the Rubicon electric sway bar disconnect make it manual disconnect, a model like that would really compete well actually very well.
    The new Frontier ...great looking truck go give Tacoma a run for money :)

      Yep, Jeeps target market is now mostly women. The vehicles look awful, made cheap, heavy and underpowered, and more concerned about cushy interior garbage than actual offroad prowess.
      I wouldn't say your view is "outdated" at all. We shouldn't feel obligated to go along with media and activist driven garbage.
      At least with the Nissan, you don't have to worry about bored, fat, middle aged women leaving plastic ducks in your vehicle everywhere you park.
