    Kevin here, just so everyone know we estimated the crank HP is around 240 since I am a little faster than his. We later dynoed it was around 193WHP about 210-215 BHP, car now has a bigger turbo and working on a tune where it will truly be a 240WHP car with racing coilovers. I will be back Jun 14 at english town and hopefully we can time it.

    I love people who put so much effort and work into a car nobody really cares about. It’s more of a personal journey than a publicity statement. My father’s 428i had 240hp actually. The N20 motor has such a great sound. The 124 sounds a lot like my friend’s 500 abarth, it has a catless downpipe.
    This car looks so fun to drive, and I guess it has enough power for how light it is. It looks like it digs into the corners VERY well. The park bench also makes a difference in its handling at speed. Throw some bird shit on it and you got a city bench.
    Nice sound to this car. I like the way the 124 looks. He does a nice job driving on the track for being new to it. I still can’t fathom how you guys drive manual so well. The downshifts and everything happening at once is something I’ll have to learn for when I get my TTRS, since it’s a 6 speed.
    I wasn’t there to feel the car, but I wonder how the suspension was in the turns. Your friend is funny lol “I might be a little bit slow” 😂
    I don’t really hear much turbo except blowoff. Probably because it’s so tiny. But the sound is a good one for sure. That looks like a pretty technical track. You both did well on it for sure!
    Anyway, I get paid tomorrow. Saving more towards the dream car. I got approved for a credit car so I can build my credit more for the bank loan now. I’m really happy.
    Fan wall huh? Maybe I’ll take a road trip one day to be on that wall. I’ll see if the Passat can beat that time, but I doubt it. Great video man
    Also, careful sitting on those park benches. Birds tend to shit on those all the time

      My wife giggled at the park bench to city bench analogy 😄😄
      One of these days, I will have to try the 428i or 328i. I've always tend to shy away from anything that isn't a range topping performance model, but recently I've been thinking about something like doing a base Alfa Romeo Giulia vs. WRX STI or Golf R. The thing is, they are totally underrated because they don't have a performance moniker, yet, in the case of Alfa, it's a 2.0L turbo that makes 280HP in the base version. Which honestly is in the same league as economy performance cars.
      The 124 probably sounds like the 500 because it is the same engine. Perhaps with a longer exhaust setup. I personally prefer the Abarth 500's exhaust note just a little more. Maybe because it makes sense in a car of that stature.
      I'm actually quite surprised at how much of a difference the aero makes on a car with this little power at the modest speeds I was going on this track. My 124 doesn't have all the fancy aero, and I thought it handled well, but this thing makes my Abarth look like a cake walk. Downshifting in a race situation and rev matching just takes practice and knowing your car.
      You are always welcome to come do a track day with me, whether it's at this home track or when if I ever visit the Texas area (which I will). If you ever visit the area, I'll take you on the track with my Abarth.
      And good for you to start on the credit train. It's so important to build good credit that people often overlook that aspect at a young age. Just be responsible and all will come with time.

      Track Day TV haha good to know your wife reads my comments too!
      Man, I think you’d enjoy the 428i more. No offense, but I feel like I’ve just seen more sedans from bmw on your channel than coupes, and I think a video on the 428 or 430i would balance that out with your last video on the 2 door M850i. The car actually has exhaust valves, which is surprising for a car that isn’t an M at all. It burbles mostly when in sport plus, and i think the best sounds you’ll get will be from the outside of the car. I’d do lots of exterior shots with exhaust note if I was you, if you decide to review the car that is. It has a wonderful sound, and the twin scroll turbocharger made by Mitsubishi can be heard from across parking lots just with the car stock. I loved driving my father’s 428i. I did lots of illegal shit in it and i was only 16 lol. That’s why he never lets me drive his E400, but maybe he will trust me with it one day.
      The 428 has a very smooth suspension setup. There is body roll, and it does understeer a bit because of the infamously lightweight N20 motor, but it is very well balanced. And it has launch control. Drive the car for 18 miles in sport plus and then it’ll be ready to do launch control. It’ll spool the turbocharger and squat the back of the car before you take off, but from what I’ve heard, the 428i is a bit finicky with the launch control. You’ll have to put it to steptronic of course but when you have your left foot on the brake, don’t ease your right foot onto the gas. Literally put it to the floor after the brake pedal is to the floor, or else it won’t work. My father’s 428i was a factory tuned showroom model, so it could never grip on launch control. But the normal models will do so with ease. I’ve actually considered the 428 to be my next car, but it’s just too slow in comparison to the cars my friends have, and the in-line 5 from the TTRS has much more modifiable potential than the in-line 4.
      God, you’ll enjoy the sound of that car. I would do an automatic if I was you. The manual is better for the 435i with the in-line 6. Better sound and gearing with that model. The engine braking in the 428i from 6,000 rpm down sounds gnarly. You can really hear the turbocharger with the windows down by the way. Windows up, it’s silent. And the car sounds better with the Windows down anyways. I like the exhaust sound more than the engine sound in it.
      In-line 4 turbos are becoming very common today. That’s the reason I’m buying the TTRS, because the in-line 5 is actually becoming more rare, only being made by Volvo and Audi now. Before, VW made them, same with Audi and Volvo, and ford made it for the Focus RS in the 2009 generation.
      But yeah man, I’d totally recommend driving the 428i over the 3. It just looks SO MUCH BETTER. The halo headlights are absolutely stunning, and give the car a VERY aggressive presence combined with its wide wheelbase and lines carved on the hood. Smooth but aggressive is the 428’s game. It does have quite a bit of low end torque as well. The twin scroll spools nearly instantaneously. Very advanced technology for its time. Revving it sounds great. You can hear the turbo in the revs too. It activates with any push of the throttle. And the blowoff is very audible from the exterior too. Like I said, I highly recommend you do exterior shots of the 428. The sound is nearly unrivaled by any other in-line 4. You’ll get what I mean when I say it sounds reminiscent of a V8.
      Anyway sorry for the long reply, I just wanted to give you as much info on a car I loved and was passionate about for 4 years straight. I’d love to see one of your very organized reviews on this car. Such an underrated car it is. 240hp it’s getting to 60 in 5.1 seconds. That’s amazing for 2014 for sure. It outruns the Ford Focus sport, with a twin turbo V6, and my father’s current car, the E400 coupe from Mercedes Benz, also with a twin turbo v6. The N20 motor is much more capable than most motors out there even today. And I think you’ll get a very nice kick out of it. Shifts are very rough in sport plus, and that’s where you’ll find the real sports car in the 28i. Rough as in a good way. They’re very quick shifts. The car, from my knowledge, isn’t even dual clutch actually, so how fast it shifts surprises the hell out of me. In Steptronic, it will hold the gears into 7,000 rpm, but it loses power significantly there, so id recommend testing it in Step and Manual for yourself. Personally, i enjoy full car control, and i drive my VW in manual all the time. It’s nice to be able to shift at whatever RPM i desire.
      Anyways if you come to Texas, let me know. I’d love to get in touch with you and meet you. Maybe even take the VW out for a drive, but I’ll probably have my TTRS by the time you come out, so that will be our car of focus for the day. But I’d still love to show you the Volkswagen, a naturally aspirated in-line 5 at its FULL potential, without any modifications to any internal parts whatsoever. Barebones full potential. That’s what I focused on with my 2 year modification series with it. Oh, and you’ll definitely get to drive the Audi if you want. VW is up to you. I live 45 minutes from Dallas, about 20 mins from DFW airport. If you do decide to come visit Texas, and you’re in the DFW area, get in touch with me for sure. Drop a comment on one of my vids, actually 3 of them to be safe so I don’t miss it, and I’ll be more than happy to set up a date, time and place to meet with you. Cars are our passion, and I enjoy sharing it with whoever I can.

      She really enjoys these long format comments, as do I. She knows you as the guy that writes essays. 😄
      I'll have to try out the 4 series at some point. I've never driven any of them whether it's an M4 or 440i or 428i. But I do sort of want to wait for the new generation since this F32 generation may get rebooted or refreshed soon. Hopefully they keep the same sportiness. Do you know if the exhaust note is real or is it synthetically assisted like in some other BMW models?
      As I drive more and more cars, I find that body roll is an inherent reality that can't really be avoided in most stock cars. Unless they are a dedicated track model, the only way is to do aftermarket suspension. Even my 124 came with a boat load of roll from the factory despite the car being so small and sporty.
      Keeping up with your friends' cars has been a past time hobby that sadly gets forgotten as you get older. I remember when I was around that age and I had all sorts of car buddies and we would measure dicks with our cars and hypothesize about who is the better driver. Now everyone has jobs and families and the car hobby in them died. But I guess car culture in Texas is better than it is around here, so maybe it's different.
      In my experience with modern turbo engines, you never really want to get it up to red line because with most factory tunes, the power is mainly in the mid range from around 3500 - 6000RPM. Anything beyond that becomes a waste of energy and you're better off shifting earlier. I think we touched on this in a previous conversation. I saw an "M" 428i the other day. Is this real? They had blue M calipers so I'm guessing it wasn't just a stick on badge.
      I'm thinking of coming to DFW this year at some point. I have a friend that lives down there. Perhaps at the end of the year when it is a little cooler. Let me know when you get the TTRS. I have yet to drive a stock one so that would be an interesting thing to do. Definitely will make an announcement on your channel if I do.

    • @noblevengeance312
      @noblevengeance312 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Track Day TV the exhaust note in the 428 is real. For the 435 I’m pretty sure it’s real. My friend has a 328 and actually took out his sound system to reduce weight in the car and it had the same exact note. There is no active sound system in it.
      Yeah the culture here is way different most likely. I see more bikes in New York than here, less sports cars and more daily cars. Here, everyone likes going fast.
      And yeah dude, my TTRS is going to be a 6 speed manual, so you’ll have fun with that. I’ve heard though that it’s really easy to outshift the synchro, so that will have to be replaced with an OEM one. I’ll definitely let you know when I get one though!
      Also for the M428i, that’s not a real car hahahahaha. The 2015 428s come with optional M Package which will add M sport brakes, and some extra trim and interior options, and also a bit louder exhaust that’s barely noticeable in comparison with a base 428, but that’s it. I find it cute how people think their car is an M car until they get smoked by a REAL M 😂.
      As for essays, I actually write really good essays. I scored a 7/8 on my first ever SAT essay portion, so I’d say I can write very very well! A skill I have that I don’t get to use much.
      I almost got pulled over today. Luckily my uniden r3 saved my ass. Laser was aimed my direction I was going 15 over. It picked up the laser before I even got around the corner so I was able to slow down. A Honda Accord sped past me 2 lanes over and got pulled over lmao.
      But yeah man, I’d appreciate a shoutout when we do this with the TTRS. It would mean a lot to me also if we could do a separate video cinematic on my Passat maybe one day. I’ve put a lot of work into it, and I can’t wait to get the TTRS so we can shoot a cinematic of it as well. Should be a fun day or even two!

    Tork or EuroCompulsion tune, now that you’ve tested both?

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      To be very honest, Tork. I went and drove my Abarth 124 a few days after Kevin's, and the throttle response and power delivery was very different, despite all other mods being almost the same.

    • @gabrielflores1149
      @gabrielflores1149 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Track Day TV Thanks for responding! Who knows, maybe if you still have your 124 Spider and decide to upgrade the turbo to get to the next level you could go Tork. Btw I tracked mine and brakes faded a bit with EBC yellowstuff pads. Will try Hawks HP+ next. Which do you use?

    • @Motosthetic
      @Motosthetic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Track Day isn’t yours automatic? Is his car custom tuned? Cause I have barely ever seen anyone run Tork and get good numbers/results. If they can even get John to do anything.

      @@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy is it a big job on the 124s? It's not bad on the 500s and I figured that would have been worse. Not as familiar with taking apart the 124, but it is surprisingly more of a pain than the 500 for a lot of jobs

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bsd103 Yes, because the engine is mounted longitudinally instead of transversely like in the 500 series, they made some things ridiculously difficult to access, like changing the oil requires you to practically remove the intake. It's not an issue of space, there's actually more space in the 124's engine bay, but it's really an issue of design. A turbo and downpipe swap is something like a 4-6 hour job for a professional shop (from what I've heard).

    • @bsd103
      @bsd103 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SpeedLabsMotorEnvy that's crazy! The 500 abarth is very smartly packaged. I could get the motor out in 4 hours or less. Most anything takes less than an hr or two, comes apart very simply. Ive been wanting to pick up a 124 to build but the more I hear about the packaging the less I want to. Even the suspension is a pain to swap compared to the 500 - which I can pull both front and back in under 30min total

    • @Chilicharger665
      @Chilicharger665 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy
      @SpeedLabsMotorEnvy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's definitely heavier than an NB or NA for sure. The chassis is straight off the ND Miata's so that is a better comparision (minus the forced induction). But an S2000 would be an interesting race because they are pretty much the same power to weight ratio. My Abarth 124 is ~230HP and doesn't have all the crazy aero so I may actually do track battle with an S2K at some point soon.
