"It's not rocket science, It's just knitting." had to laugh and it helped me to relax about being a beginner again... I was feeling like such a failure and now, I've finished a few small projects with a few mistakes. I didn't rip them up... Just laughed at myself and finished the project. Beauty marks, I call them. Thanks for the loving and informative videos. Because of you, I won't give up this time. I'm having fun. Thanks, Lynn
I love you guys. Watching your videos is like sitting down with best friends and knitting. You encourage and teach without talking down to us or acting like our questions, or problems, are dumb and unimportant. Thank you. And, if you guys ever come out with a shirt or sweatshirt that says, "It's not rocket science, it's just knitting" I will be one of the first to get one!
So glad to know that this twisting is normal. I was thinking I was the only one this happens to and decided to search TH-cam for the solution. You guys make me feel so much better about the “issue” that I am not going to fret any more. When the balls get twisted, I will just stop, untwist them patiently and look at the work to see just how worth it it really is. And it’s always worth it! Thank you!
I discovered your channel not quite two months ago, and I'm so thankful for it. I know I'm not saying anything new that you haven't heard many times before, but you guys are an absolute gem. And you compliment each other so well - a great pair! Beyond the wonderful tutorials, thank you for also giving us a glimpse into your world, and into your beautiful home and garden.
Hello Arne & Carlos, hope you're well. I came across you guys quite by accident when I was looking for a special book on World of Books. I then bought and downloaded your book of 55 Christmas Balls to Knit Patterns from Kindle and also found you on TH-cam. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making these videos. I learned knitting during my school days from a close cousin of mine. My late Grandma Violet was very Crafty but she never knits or crochet, late Grandma Theresa had a stroke in her early Fifties, so I didn't have any Grandmas to teach me to knit or crochet like other lucky people... so I'm grateful to you both for taking the time to make your amazing videos to show and teach us the 'how to knit..etc.'. I knit the old fashion way (right-handed knitter) and I learned that, in order for the balls of yarn to not tangle, I have the main colour ball on my right (yarn above my right index finger) and the changing colour on the left ( yarn below my right index finger) holding both yarns at the same time, so that I can change the colours easily without the tangles and tight tension, hope you know what I mean and hope this helps. Thank you and have a lovely day.
Haha, I learnt to do all that on my own. It comes pretty naturally actually. I also learned to keep my thread on my non-purling hand from this video, very interesting. Tusen takk!
Arne and Carlos. Thank you for your tutorials. Thanks to your tutorials I have taught myself how to knit Scandinavian style and I am loving it. I have tried other methods (i.e., Peruvian, Continental, etc) and none seemed comfortable. However the Scandinavian came quite natural and I have not had trouble with the tension. I already bought three of your books. Cannot wait to finish the sweater I am working on to begin on a slipper and then to one of the dolls from your dolls book. They are all beautiful!!! Do you think you will be making a tutorial on how to knit intarsia using the Scandinavian method? thank you!!!! Raúl
This video is everything! Soooo helpful. I am relearning to knit, in Norwegian style. I bought your Lykke mitten pattern and have started it. This method of picking up the two colors in turn is so simple and wonderful. Thank you! Very well demonstrated. :)
Hah! I've done that where you held the skeins in the air and let the project hang and untwist. I stand on the couch so I'm taller and can untwist more length, lol.
I have to say, you must think we are all so stupid 🤣 I was almost in tears from the twists, I love using lots of colours but, I thought to myself “there is NO way advanced knitters are running into this issue” Thank you, thank you times a thousand. I have been twisting the colours each stitch, rather than just twisting at the switch, and carrying it! As for untwisting, I’ve spent hours. I mean HOURS, untwisting from the other end instead of turning my work upside down & letting it untwist. 🤦🏽♀️ Thank you guys. SO much for making this video-it’s such common sense but I guess us new knitters just lack that in knitting 😂 I do at least!
Thanks for this. Both of you. For your techniques, but even more for your sense of humor! Looking foreward to meet you in Koln, Germany end of March! Untill then! Hugs from Jo An, Wolhalla, Netherlands
The yarns with your names on them are gorgeous and the patterns are unique and beautiful. Do you two actually design the patterns that come from these yarns? How does that work?
Thanks for the tip. I used to let it tangle until it became too tight, then I would just hold onto the two balls of yarn, let the knitted piece hang loose, and it will unwind itself in a minute by spinning around and around.
Hi Carlos and Arne, when dropping to untwist yarn, this works ok with yarn like Noro Ito. Unfortunately with single ply merino like Malabrigo Worsted it pulls the work too tight. I have tried the way Arne keeps the yarn in the left hand and although ackward at first I have gotten better at it and it turns out great! Love your videos!
Just did the yarn trick.....letting the project hang in the air....a little...two partner deal with my best friend who treats me like a princess....deb
Some videos on yutube tell me to always pick up the new yarn from under the current yarn, which does twist the yarn. Now I see that it does not matter if you pick up the new yard from under or from over the current yarn. This does simplify life, as I am starting to do color knitting.
I have a quedtion please. You addressed the dual twisting up of the two colors together however, how do you deal with each individual color? They were both severly twisted up onto themselves. How does that occour or why and please, I would like to prevent that from happening to my yarns. I"ve noticed some people seem to add a twist to their knitting by just knitting. While others do not. This is obvious when you are say at a knitting gethering by the multiple difference in results styles etc. Great learning experience. Very exciting. All the varieties of peoples needle types, cords, yarns, color ccombinstions, techiques color mixtures sampeling its a creativuty party if images my mind will forever be replayning in various situations making creativity more genierious. As artists I think it is a creativity encouragement but a necessity for a life long artist and instructor. For me it is imperitive to experiece teaching and taking classes with others to see all the different approaches when everyone that starts with the same basic matetials to create say the same object, pattern, or stitch. I find it helps me and really helps my students,So important I just Love it! Thank you. I hope you get an opportunity to approach this question also. Some get twisted others don't even using the exact needle cord and yarn set up. I'm talking abuot people who use the same cord and needle certaintly. As we know there are some cords that don't ever twist up onto themselves like ChiaGoo cords, which I love because I have a twist to my knitting just from knitting. Also another brand has a connector piece for the cord that attatching needle size, they are some type of Hiya Hiya interchangable needles when converting I believe to a different size cord using a larger or smaller interchangable needle set. I'm not certain of the direction up or down as I don't have them. But a friend does and she just adores them.
I'm pretty good with keeping the 2 colors not too twisted, but is there a way to control the balls, themselves to prevent the yarn from kinking, as you have some major kinks, there. I think it's sometimes called biasing. Thanks! Really enjoy your videos.
thank you ... would this work in m y situation? I am using double strand from same ball to use up my stash for a striped project. The twists are unmerciful and quickly turn into knots if I am knitting very quickly and don't notice. I have had to invent untwist maneuvers which are very clumsy and awkward, but I do want to knit 2 strands to use up my stash; some I am just doing with 2 balls of different colors, but I don't really grasp what you are showing. I will rewatch a few times. I only knit continental wound around left index finger. Liked and sub for sure! Bravo!
You make me laugh so much - thank you - its true, it's only knitting...... i was watching T.V, knitting, following a chart and reading subtitles !!!! Looked down and what a tangle - the 'Carlos method' came into play..... ..spinning around and around, sometimes it's the only way!💖💖💖

What about the floats on the back? if I just drop one colour and knit with the one that is active in the pattern. Then when I swap over to the other colour and just pick the next one up, will there not be to long floats on the back ?
Hi Arne & Carlos! could any one of you please demonstrate how to knit with colours the english way and how to avoid the twisting while doing so. Many thanks to you both for All your knowledge you share with us.
oh how funny. I knit the same way you do and its something I developed myself .after watching continental knitters stretch their fingers out it looked so unnatural too me so being a chrocher first I just naturally bring my work close to my fingers. and would you believe I am a full blooded norwegion and am just starting fair isle. would love to see more beginner patterns for fair isle on utube.
Is there an easy way for the opposite please? Been given a garment that was made up of 2 years knitted together. I am trying to unravel this but what a nightmare? Is there any tips for unravelling the 2 knitted together yarns? Hope that makes sense?
Do you have any suggestions for how to keep yarn organised for two at a time, toe up socks of two colours? Right now I'm keeping one of the balls in the already knitted toe, but I'm still getting quite a mess at times with four yarns going at once.
Because I enjoy the reverse side patterns in twisting and layering of the yarn, reversing the twist as in example 1 would be verboten. I’ve always done example 2. It’s a nice thing to do as it gives me a break ... I can knit for hours on end, so, taking a slow but short break is ALLLLLLLways a welcomed thing!!
Hello, thank you for the great videos. Would you please consider doing one on how to untwist your yarn when working with 3 colors? I can't find a single one on TH-cam. Thanks!
I just had to laugh! I'm so glad that i already just grab my ball and watch my project spin! lol.... But that doesn't work on large projects to well.. lol... seriously tho.... would Arne's way be the way for 3 or more colors of yarn to prevent twisting? ...I've been just stopping and untwisting the strands myself. Than you guys for sharing your talents with us!
Serious question now...what about the back of the work? If you just pick up the strands randomly, do you lose the neat patterning of the back of the work?
you two are so funny love your cardigan tried to send you a photo of the one i just finished for your thought but not sure if i could.kind regards. ps my tec skills are rubish.
UGHHH this is the problem I face when I use three or more different colors (two doesnt bother me too much cause I lift the whole thing and untwist like you just did) I once had four different yarns and it just drove me insane where I just couldnt fix it so I cut them off :))
I been wondering when Arne is knitting a fancy pattern does Carlos read the instructions so that you can knit faster. I knit by myself and I know I could knit so much faster if another person read the pattern instructions to me.
stitcherscottage Yeah, you can carry one yarn in each hand, AND tangling is a thing of the past. I once did a pattern that required carrying two colours on each hand. I managed it with minimal tangling, but sure as heck didn't pay attention to the TV!
stitcherscottage Yes, and this is exactly what Arne shows in the video how he holds the one yarn Norwegian (continental) style and the other yarn he throws in, English style. The issue still is that if you have a very long float, that goes across more that 4 stitches, you still need to twist the two yarns around to keep those floats under control and therefore some twisting is still unavoidable.
I knit two color by combining throwing and continental, one for each color and both colors in my hands. I don't get twists when I knit, but I get them when I turn the work. Is there an easy solution to that?
@@rebeccabilly7466 I did but still managed to twist it. But I did solve the problem. I taught myself to knit and purl backwards and now knit entire blankets without ever turning the work. It saves so much time you wouldn't believe it. Plus it's fun and the change up uses different muscles or something because it seems like I can knit longer without cramping.
I'd appreciate if you could demonstrate doing this on the purl side. It might not apply to you guys, because you nearly always knit on circular needles but most of us have to knit purl, and keeping the tension equal is harder with purl, for some reason. Thanks!
@@ARNECARLOS I must admit I haven't. I know Arne stresses tension is everything with double stranding, and that increases the challenge. But thank you, I will be seeking the knitting school videos. Do I need to pay? I'll do it.
Thank you for assuring the twisting problem is actually not a problem. I always thought I must be not doing the right way that's why the balls are twisted. But of course I will start keep an eye on my balls now... lol
thank you...and thank you for understanding that we all don't have a lovely Norwegian mother or grandmother to ask these questions.

stitcherscottage Yes, and this is exactly what Arne shows in the video how he holds the one yarn Norwegian (continental) style and the other yarn he throws in, English style. The issue still is that if you have a very long float, that goes across more that 4 stitches, you still need to twist the two yarns around to keep those floats under control and therefore some twisting is still unavoidable.

Thanks!
Hi Karin, have you checked out our knitting school videos?
@@ARNECARLOS I must admit I haven't. I know Arne stresses tension is everything with double stranding, and that increases the challenge. But thank you, I will be seeking the knitting school videos. Do I need to pay? I'll do it.
Shouldn't the new color always come from underneath the current color being used and not over the top or doesn't that matter so much?
Kathy Johnson No, there's no rule that says so and it doesn't really matter.
Thank you for assuring the twisting problem is actually not a problem. I always thought I must be not doing the right way that's why the balls are twisted. But of course I will start keep an eye on my balls now... lol
