Yeah, Leipzig sort of embodies the spirit of Berlin in the 90s to early 00s (still cheap, run down but with a lot of energy and growth, more legit artists, musicians, counter-cultural types live/moving there as opposed to hipster-yuppies like Berlin attracts now) while also overall looking better. That said, it's a lot smaller and less cosmopolitan / international, which is a major negative unless you're really into German culture, food, and can speak German well. I suppose that's another negative for Berlin though, way too many expats there that only speak English, which ends up hurting anyone living there long term as they will not feel properly integrated and limited to a small bubble. Hopefully, the trend chasers, city hoppers, tourists, yuppies, and hipster-yuppies stay in Berlin. Would suck if they started flocking to Leipzig all of a sudden because they start hearing Leipzig is the cooler city now.
Both places are very affordable. Of course, Berlin has a lot more to offer in terms of night life, attractions and history.Leipzig is slightly less exciting but has some things to offer and the people there are typically more approachable.
Not mentioned were two of Leipzig's most amazing cultural institutions, famous the world over: The Gewandhaus Orchestra and the St. Thomas Boy's Choir, which is over 800 years old and which had none less than JS Bach as its Choirmaster back in the 18th century. Thanks for the video!
I live in Leipzig and honestly, to say that "Karl-Liebknecht-Straße is the epicenter for the city's youth culture" is just beyond wrong, it is (apart from 2 or 3 venues) really boring mainstream to pubcrawl stuff... but for people who think shopping at a train station is an exciting start of a trip to Leipzig, it might just be the perfect place... together with the hotspot club "Moritzbastei" Ahahahahaha and 'Elsterartig'... you guys had a really great "Insider" giving you those "hot suggestions" on what makes Leipzig special. I'm amazed there was no "Ladies get the first drink for free" party included (>_< ) And honestly, I'm not usually a troll and like Deutsche Welle, so this just as a little remark that no person with a creative background/job would give you those recommendations. You've really included the mainstream of mainstream and I feel sorry for people following these guidelines on an otherwise inspiringly different city
Hi Mira; Where would you recommend that a first time visitor to Leipzig go to gain an understanding of what makes Leipzig special. I am no longer young but hen I travel I want to see and experience cities as they are even if it is not my classic "scene". Thanks,
hmmm... i wouldn't write it online maybe, also because I am not sure of your taste and there is many sides of the city. A lot of what makes the city special is spontaneous, half-legal, temporary / one-time etc. - I would recommend to approach people that look like they do interesting stuff and ask them what places they recommend. Ask a bartender where he would dine and ask a record store employee where to party :D Generally I would look at the city centre just quickly to take that in and then venture to Leipzig West to look at art and water / canals and Karl-Heine Straße / Spinnerei Area and then walk through Waldstraßenviertel if you like historic architecture (maybe get a bite somewhere South or West Leipzig) and then go to the East of the city if you enjoy grungy urban experiments and pay-what-you like cafés. On a sunny day rent a bike and ride the wonderful way from city centre through the Auwald woods along a Russian tea house and greet a moose and wild boar until you reach Cospudener See, one of the many beautiful lakes in the area. The nature is really unique, so easy to reach from the inner city!
and also: never read any of the official "event" publications. Buy "Stadtschwärmer" it is an alternative, really pretty in-depth city guide with nice recommendations. If you want to save time, look at www.verborgenes-leipzig.de/en/English_110.html for some nice tips aswell - it is an official guide but in my area (east Leipzig) their cover is ok - and amazing compared with standard guides as it does not only cover tourists-only destinations.

Reagan wasn't even president then, it was Bush Sr. So how about you educate yourself on the subject before you try to school somebody who actually lived in the town at that time.
nfletch57 There are few Immigrants in the part of Germany that is known today as East. Most of them are in the western part, especially in the Ruhr Basin.

That tax you refer (Solidaritätszuschlag) is paid by any German tax payer East and West and then used to fund investments in economically poor regions in both East and West. The point of higher development is now only true for rural areas, but that can't be said at all about major cities like Potsdam, Dresden, Jena and of course Leipzig.

I love the Liepzig Gewandhaus Orchestra, Bach's own orchestra. It is the second best in Germany, right behind the incomparable Berlin Philharmonic.
