My grandmother was an organist in Dresden. After the bombing the church was destroyed as well as the organ. She did pick one of the flue pipes from one of the Prinzipal stops. It was bent and dented but still produced a sound. When I took up my first post as organist at the age of sixteen, she gave this flue pipe to me for my birthday. As a Dresdener, I must confess that your documentary is just inspiring and great. You did a very good job here. Just one remark: it would have been more balanced to include also parts not at the centre of the city (Blue Wonder, Pillnitz e.g.) because many travellers also enjoy to see some nature/parks/landscape in easy reach from the city centre.
What other places do you suggest? We were in Dresden just after the river tours to Meissen stopped for the season. So disappointed. . But when returning, would like to see the neighboring areas you mention. We did travel to Bautzen, where the medieval towers were so striking and also learned more about other aspects of the history there. Would appreciate your other suggestions.

Harold Potsdamer Wow! You’re the first person I’ve heard from Germany that has so much antagonism for the Brits and Americans. I love Rick Steves' Europe series. This is the first time I could provide a "like" and a comment. A former co-worker of mine actually visited the rebuilt Church of Our Lady - and she showed us photos; she could not stop talking about it. I love that people can come together to resurrect the beautiful centuries-old architecture that defined their cities. I especially love to see people happy again after all the persecutions and oppression they went through are gone. Wish I could travel and know several languages - just to make friends with the people I meet. And by the way - All the treasures of the Wettin dynasty - absolutely beautiful!

Humboldtforum in Berlin.

I visited Dresden shortly after the wall came down. It was a very enjoyable visit. Everything was less commercial then. Now I see it has changed greatly, very "prettied" up. I don't know how it would be to visit again, in light of COVID-19, which I expect will linger for some time to come. Leipzig also was unique. I remember visiting the Battle of Nations monument and walking inside. I enjoy these travel videos, because frankly I don't have the stamina that I used to have, and they enable me to refresh my memory without any bother or expense.

Very fascinating videography of Saxony. We visited Berlin in order to get a taste of Germany but really regret we did not have time to visit these areas. It's very fascinating to visit former East German areas and notice the variance in architecture with older or Western Germany. It's also interesting to see these large war memorials. In parallel in the Southeastern U.S. many grandiose war memorials were built around 1910-1915.
Hi I am living in Dresden I love the city so much. There is the beautiful space where all the old buildings are and than there are shopping miles like Prager street for example. On the other side of the Elbe is Neustadt, the part with the cool restaurants and extraordinary ideas😊 The part of Dresden I‘m living in has buildings in the old style too, not only the centre is beautiful, suburbs too❤️❤️❤️ Looove Dresden ❤️❤️❤️

Jessie Jane don’t be to hard with him ,he saved Britain . It wasn’t necessary to bomb Dresden but even defenders are warriors and may loose there sensibility during a bitter war.
@@johnedwards7542 The destruction of old historical Coventry's centre - absolutely dreadful, terrible and unnecessary as it was - was never on such a gigantic scale as in Dresden or many other German cities. The UK, comparatively, never received such an utterly devasting force of air raids by any measure; the damage towards historical and architectural monuments done in Germany is - totally neutrally speaking - without comparison. It's just that many people don't know about it.
NorthSea 1981 Bombing at the time wasnt very precise, thats the reason why so much of Dresden was destroyed. And also, lets bot forget how germany bombed rotterdam, Kiew and especially Warsaw. After the war, over 90% of warsaw was destroyed. Dresden was nothing against that

Other places in Saxony to visit: Görlitz (Inglorious Basterds & Grand Budapest Hotel and others were filmed here), Seiffen (town where Christmas decorations like the Nutcracker were invented and are still produced today) and Saxon Switzerland (National Park).
I may be biased, as I spent nearly a month in Leipzig but only got to see Dresden for a few hours (and want to return), but I think Leipzig was dealt the short end of the stick here, and feel the need to vouch for it. Leipzig has some really beautiful museums like the Grassimuseum Fuer Angewandete Kunst (decorative arts), as well as the Stadtgeschichtliches Museum Altes Radhaus (the city history musem, above the ground floor of the old city hall). The former is very affordable to see, and the latter is free. Another free activity is the university's botanical garden, although the palm house costs a few euros to see. Also, the Leipzig Zoo is one of the best in all of Europe!
Thank you very much for this wonderful videotape I enjoyed and knew a lot about Dresden and Saxony .. The source of Germany 's creative, strong, rebellious and courageous .. Greetings from Libya .. I love you, the people of Germany .. Kisses
America, look at this city's, how beautiful a place can be without cars and highways everywhere. I love the states, but oh boy, you need a better public transportation!
So all cities of EU is smaller than the tiniest city the states? Didn't know that every american village has more than 10 million inhabitants. The problem with Europen cities vs american cities is that Europe uses its downtown for more than comerce, while americans prefer malls on the outskirts of a town to relax in. Dont know how big you think LA is, but LA is investing in a metro right now. California, Florida and some of the more densley populated states are getting better trains.Finding even more space for highways and airports in LA or the bay earea is almost impossible. The distance with long distace trains isnt the problem in the USA. You easely could upgrade tracks so that trains drive 200 miles the hour. Then Chicago-New York City only would take 4+ hours (depending on the stops). Its more that the tracks are privately owned by cargo companies. Thats why Amtraks Acela uses almost 7 hours on a trip it could do in 3 hours In theory you could do Boston-New York-Baltimore-Washington-Pittsburgh-Cleveland-Toledo-Chicago in 6 hours or Chicago-LA in 10 hours if you would do it as China does (some trains there do 1300 miles with only 2-3 stops)
just a few steps east of the Frauenkirche is -St.Petersburger Straße- an incredible ugly motorway through downtown Dresden. After the bombs of WW2 german city planers in east and west destroyed lots of german cities (Dresden, Hannover etc.) a second time.
Rick Steve, your voice and your show are a Godsend to me. It just soothes my mood.... You guys make me happy everytime you're on (PBS. I also own your DVD's too... THANKS!
I visited the DDR a number of times between 1966 and 1989. The people I stayed with were top doctors and surgeons. After a tip off that the Station were aware of me I booked into hotels for one night to get the Volkspolizei (Vopos) papers sorted then secretly stayed with my friends. I made friends with a girl my age (c18 in 1966) and I was able to get her some Beach Boys and Neil Diamond records right under the noses of the VolksGrenzpolizei. We were eventually able to meet in London in the 1990s. We are still in touch. I have many tales to tell but not here apart from forcing the Händelhaus in Halle/Saale to publish a guide in English as I told them that Handel became English!
During my trip through Germany in 2019 I never even considered Saxony as a destination. These days however I do wish I paid that land a visit. I will be reading more and more about it. As somebody from the former USSR, I expected to really dislike Berlin. That feeling echoed in any GDR state as well, including Saxony. Oh how wrong I was. That Napoleon war monument is just insane. Just insane...
I have visited Leipzig four times during the last two decades. When Covid times are over, I plan to go back to this Musikstadt and include Dresden, as well.

Super informative video, Rick. Keep up the excellent work, mate 👏❤
Hi Rick. How to say thanks to you to bring the world inside our homes during pandemic. Watching one of your vids has become a daily routine habit of mine. Great choices, Genuine info, high quality photography and nice music and ...
Thanks a lot and god bless you.

Mr. Steves, you advertise our country in a very kind and correct manner. Congratulations.
Thank you again Rick Steves for a professional and lovely presentation, narrated pleasantly and eloquently...:)
Noel Ben Dunsky He just has to learn to pronounce German words better,so people can understand what he is saying.
thank you for showing this video! I was as pupil 1985 in the city, everything was still destroyed, it is nice to see, how much is rebuilt! DRESDEN becomes ELBFLORENCE again!
RICK STEVES!!!! I could watch his videos all day!! MY MAN!!!
One of my fav shows.thank you.🎟️💯
Hi I am living in Dresden
I love the city so much. There is the beautiful space where all the old buildings are and than there are shopping miles like Prager street for example. On the other side of the Elbe is Neustadt, the part with the cool restaurants and extraordinary ideas😊
The part of Dresden I‘m living in has buildings in the old style too, not only the centre is beautiful, suburbs too❤️❤️❤️
Looove Dresden ❤️❤️❤️
respect from Romania, it was already the end of the war and Germany was collapsing on both fronts. the American air force was bombing military targets and the British were committing genocide. this is the cruel truth. a cultural city destroyed by a senile and drunken old man who later lost the UK elections. when the population of India was suffering from hunger, 3,000,000 people had already died, he said;; let them die because they multiplied like rabbits.;;. if I were a German, I would never forgive this genocide of the British
Our inspiration of our travels, thank you @Rick Steve!!!
Thanks Rick Stevens' for these wonderful video!
Thanks Steve. Very informative as always. Good selection of towns.
I just moved to Leipzig so this was perfect. Thank you so much.
Loved Saxony on our visit couple years ago. Dresden is amazing. I always think Churchill got away easy with war crimes for what he did.
Dresden was nothing against that
@@idk6446whatever We shouldn't open up a buzz game with the suffering of our peoples. Suffering is suffering and injustice is injustice, no matter where and by whom it took place. We must not forget the horrors of war, but we should forgive ourselves and especially the other and guarantee our peoples a life side by side as equal and valued partners.
@Michael VR lies

I'm living here in Dresden now... It's rili a beautiful city... ♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
Well done, Rick.
loved the video, the objective but positive tone, the education, great! greetz from east Germany.
Very beautiful presentation 👍👏👏👏👏 Thanks 👍
Too many tourists in Germany i was one of them. What a spectacular country to visit.
Other places in Saxony to visit: Görlitz (Inglorious Basterds & Grand Budapest Hotel and others were filmed here), Seiffen (town where Christmas decorations like the Nutcracker were invented and are still produced today) and Saxon Switzerland (National Park).
Bellissimo video. Grazie!
Thanks from Budapest.
Rick is the best vlogger , no nonsence , just culture history architecture
Kisses
Guten tag, Dankeschon fur teilen!
Thanks Europe teach world how build beautiful cites and architecture.I excite for first Europe travel.
America, look at this city's, how beautiful a place can be without cars and highways everywhere. I love the states, but oh boy, you need a better public transportation!
Please keep in mind that Germany especially and also entire EU is much smaller than the USA
Thats why Amtraks Acela uses almost 7 hours on a trip it could do in 3 hours
In theory you could do Boston-New York-Baltimore-Washington-Pittsburgh-Cleveland-Toledo-Chicago in 6 hours or Chicago-LA in 10 hours if you would do it as China does (some trains there do 1300 miles with only 2-3 stops)
No thanks. I'd rather be independent and drive in my own vehicle to where I want to go on my own.
@@JohnnyUtah15 However, there are a lot of benefits to using public transportation, even if it's not very convenient.
just a few steps east of the Frauenkirche is -St.Petersburger Straße- an incredible ugly motorway through downtown Dresden. After the bombs of WW2 german city planers in east and west destroyed lots of german cities (Dresden, Hannover etc.) a second time.
Aaaahhhhhh I 💖 you Rick Steves!!!!!!! And of course your amazing series. You are a great host.
I lived there for 3 years. loved it

Stasi . not Station above!
Such a wonderful and intelligent video! Keep on this good work! :)
Прекрасные города!

DON'T RING THE BELL. SAPPERS AIN'T DONE BUILDING YET
Just watch all your videos I've been around the world. Thank you, Rick. Wonderful and impressive presentation.
I have a dream to visit Germany
Rojesh Jangam I have dreamed of visiting Germany . ( dreamt can also be used )
If they had won the war, you could already be visiting it right nowxD
May your dream come true in 2020!!!👼❤💙💜💛💚💗👍👌👏

What a great job! I love to watch your videos.
This is like traveling while sitting on my couch.
I have visited Leipzig four times during the last two decades. When Covid times are over, I plan to go back to this Musikstadt and include Dresden, as well.
What a beautiful video, looking forward to see more of your videos.
Great presentation....has convinced me to visit summer 2020. thanks
I enjoy very much your travel tours
Mr.Rick Steves taught all the history of almost every part of Europe in a very magnificent way without asking for a penny rather than paying thousands of dollars for my history teacher a year that's just filled boredom.
Lol you think he does this for free?
