This is the craziest way I've seen anyone ever tie a button knot, there are such easier ways that one can tie this knot. There are several tutorials on this site that demonstrate how to tie this knot in a much less convoluted fashion.
I have been taught to have separate channels for the final two passages through the knot. With the bury I doubt it matters much, though. Very nice video. I appreciate the over the shoulder view.
Made one last night. It turned out pretty well, even if I do say so myself. A friend just gifted me some 1/8" Amsteel (not fond of yellow, but hey free is free) and my next project is to make one of the clip button knots for my tree straps.
It's not just aesthetic, it's practical. Burying the end stands increase the amount of material the noose bites on, and therefor the diameter of the loop, which means a more gentle bend a a less strength lost. It's one of the reasons why this type of button knot is stronger than the older diamond knot method.

Pretty impressive button knot tying Jeff! I have done numerous whoopie slings, continuous loops and ridgelines out of 7/64th Amsteel. This looks more difficult but will give it a go. It seems like the sky is the limit with this material. :)

@@jeffmyers7062 I use the calculator on Animated Knots which is the Edwards calculation, set for a Diamond Knot. I know that the button knot takes more, both in the tying and in the bury but am unsure how much more. I am thinking approx. 10% more.
I buy Amsteel in cut lengths from West Marine, locally. Have not tried to buy bulk (full spools). They might be available online from WM. Hope this is helpful.
Jeff, I first saw your soft shackles on Outdoor Adventures channel. I tried to find Frozen’s video again and naturally, now I can’t! I was hoping he had a link to you for purchasing a couple sets. I have no desire to make my own. I didn’t know if you had an Etsy shop or some such thing. ?

Spliced some of these and used them on my last trip out. Worked great, I really like them. Much easier to work with than the standard soft shackles.

Im very new to this and I ordered 12 strand 3/16in dyneema for utv/atv recovery. Do the same steps apply for the 12 strands and thicker rope?

even a 1 inch loop will never slip . A good rule of thumb is a 1 inch overlap of the two strands
