The eeveelution depends on the first two rival battles (the one in oak lab and the one in route 22). If player win both he pick Jolteon, if player lose both he pick Vaporeon, if it's 1-1 he picks Flareon.
The gym leader mechanic seems kind of impressive considering it's still technically a Game Boy game. Game Freak still hasn't managed to do that to this day, even with Scarlet/Violet. For the rival is it the entire team that changes now? Even in normal gen 1 games, half of his later teams changes depending on his starter so that he always has the same types present. Grass/fire/water are the variable slots in red/blue, while fire/water/electric are the variable slots in yellow.
@@qactustick It's not that impressive it's literally as easy as setting a variable to check how many badges you have then set teams for however many badges you want to care about. One thing Jrose didn't mention if you guys aren't aware but you can buy all TMs in this game. Celadon on the 5th floor has a guy who sells the early to mid game TMs (water gun, thunder wave, etc). Cinnabar Pokemart has mostly the gym TMs and things like Dig. At the Pokemon League the mart sells the most of the high end stuff ice beam, thunderbolt, flamethrower (yes TM 04 has been changed to flamethrower). After you beat the league there is another guy next to the league mart stand and he sells the 120 power moves, earthquake and psychic as well as PP ups. Also stone evos still learn their level up movesets so don't worry about missing out on any moves.
Maybe there could've been a compromise where after you catch Mewtwo, the man that normally blocks you from re-entering the dock area tells you that he saw Mew flying out and heading southwest, or maybe you temporarily re-enter yourself and interact with Mew, who then teleports to the Cinnabar Mansion. Either one would be a callback to the popular myth and unlock its encounter at the Mansion when activated.

I partially disagree. Thing is, the games WERE more challenging back in the day, either due to lack of knowledge about Pokémon attacks, movesets or due to the absurd amount of knowledge about the games themselves. And that was part of the fun. That doesn't mean modded or new versions of games have to be ultra hard, but I for one enjoy more difficult versions, so I always hope, at least, for a difficulty mod or setting. @@BernardoWLopes I, respectfully, disagree. The main reason a lot of the older games were hard was because their levels were inflated to compensate for their terrible movesets, lack of coverage, the AI being just awful etc forcing you to grind just to keep up but that’s not really “difficulty” and proper challenge just makes you grind more which is cool when you’re a kid cuz you don’t care lol because Arceus knows I didn’t 😂 I had all the free time in the world to grind back then. Exactly this, and the new games try to capture that spirit as well. I get sick of the gorillas going "Ug, pokemon not hard enuf, game bad ug ug" when it's like... It's not about you and your weird fetish for groin-crushing difficulty little bro...
@@alexisauld7781 there’s a balance to be fair. Because while I do think there’s a lot of revisionist history about the difficulty/design of the older games and a lot of “mUh DiFicUltY” among the fandom, at the same time they have since Gen six from Musuda’s own mouth have purposefully made the games insultingly easy 😂 which isn’t good either. Part of the problem is due to their crazy self imposed development cycle they don’t have time to balance the game for all to enjoy not just one group or the other.

35:10 there's a bird in my neighborhood we've named Craig. Our Craig is just like this one, in that it also likes to wait for someone to walk by (minding their own business) so it can swoop in and kick the crap out of you.
Two things ive always wanted to see: 1. Gym leaders who refuse to battle you unless you reduce your team size to match theirs. 2. A tournament style battle against randomly generated teams which you must win before challenging the elite 4, and preferably in a stadium setting instead of the back room of a gas station in the mountains
Love that you're showcasing this! It's so cool to see how you found different speedbumps from me. Surge was the first time I noticed it; I smashed him with Parasect. You handled the Rivals better that I did, despite being much lower level that me xD I definitely not build a balanced team lol. Spore/Growth on Parasect was insane the whole game. Definitely my MVP.
One of the coolest changes I saw when playing was Flareon learning Growth (AKA Gen 1 Calm Mind). That with badge boost glitch made him unstoppable if I got to set up
One of my favorite rom hacks was called "Ultra Violet," which was a hack for FireRed. You were able to catch or envelope every pokemon from the first 3 generations. Pokemon that would evolve by trade instead evolved by level up. All of the legendary pokemon were catchable. Mew for example was located inside Bills pokemon machine which teleported you to a small island. There were a few hidden tiles throughout the game that would guarantee the next encounter was shiny. There were entire maps that were made from scratch. It was honestly great. Idk if it's still around
And that's the general issue with hard pokemon games. It all comes down to puzzle encounters where you can waste forever to set up the solution to a problem, or you have to cheese it with something like a badge boost glitch. Neither is really any more fun than if the ai wasn't acting after you and wasn't setup with all the options and stats
I just beat the yellow legacy postgame, took me about 100 hours and I had a blast. All my favorite nostalgia vibes without the bugs and quality of life problems.
She was actually planned for the original red and green but was scrapped midway, then she was brought back in the remakes with a new design that is popularly known as "Leaf"
I love how the rival had 3 different teams representing the 3 different outcomes from the first couple of battles like originally but his teams also come from different games/manga I believe.
This brings me *_so_* back to the times I used to play Pokémon Tower Defense! I never truly considered playing the Gen 1 games beforehand, but now? Now I want to play this game a darn ton for sure!! Shout out to the dev that called it the perfect rendition, because I haven't even played the game and I can already say that they're totally right!
That Surge battle shows a real shortcoming of the Hard mode function. It isn't about figuring out a better strategy with the pokemon you have, but forces you to catch a pokemon who can beat the gym leader. Imagine trying to do a solo challenge or a nuzlocke in this game mode and not catching the obligatory Dugtrio first.
A Grass type can handle Surge pretty well since they resist Thunderbolt and Surf. Pikachu can also ParaFlinch its way to victory in true anime fashion. Other options include Nidorino/Nidorina with Dig, a sleeper like Drowzee/Wigglytuff/Butterfree, or just a stocky Normal type like Lickitung. Dugtrio is far from the only answer
Damn this game looks amazing! Ty for taking the time to showcase it jrose! Its a nice change of pace when you do these types of videos playing through romhacks, well done keep up the great work :)
Its sad we live in a world where all Game Freak have to do is either copy and paste this game or hire this guy and they will make bank. But instead they copyright these kind of games so moone can play them. What a joke of a company.
It's a major improvement over the base game, but playing through it, it feels unfinished and unpolished. A good example is the fishing mechanic. Instead of having fishing spawns change based on the route, the Old Rod catches the same 2 Pokemon everywhere and the Good Rod catches the same 2 Pokemon everywhere. They also clean up some bugs but leave in place other negative ones. They actually added Sleep strategies to trainers that didn't use Sleep before, but you still can't attack on the turn you wake up, which is so annoying. This change and others make a lot of the trainers feel like a total RNG-fest, which I HATE. It also really annoys me that they removed the Bug on Poison super effectiveness but kept the Poison on Bug. That leaves Parasect with 3 4x weaknesses. That said, so many of the changes are great. Fighting and Bug type Pokemon are finally viable which itself is a miracle.
Hey I know it's not super relevant to the video but I just wanted to say thank you for the great videos you make! You've quickly become one of my favorite TH-camrs to listen to and I really appreciate the relaxing and (for lack of a better term) wholesome vibe your stuff has. God bless you, I pray you're well, and keep up the great work!
Old Rod not only catches Goldeen, you can also get a Poliwag! I got oneon my playthrough, and it´s now a really tanky Poliwrath that learnt Ice Punch naturally!
@TheRandomGuyTheFarNoGameCat well unfortunately I only have my phone to run roms on and I tried but couldn't get crystal legacy to work so I probably won't be able to get this to work either sadly
@DKTN11 I tried :/ I followed the links and directions I just couldn't get it to work. I'm also pretty noobish when it comes to tech so that doesn't help lmao
I really don't mind quality of life updates. Nintendo/Pokemon Co. Do it all the time, it's why we have like 10,0000 remakes of gen 1. I like this. Can't wait to download it.
It's always interesting to see what 'improved' versions of the games get wrong and right. Giving Raichu surf, while a fun reference, ultimately invalidates the entire system of type advantage/disadvantage. Having all the pokemon in each game and replacing trade evolution with level up is a good change, but the way the were spread through the game invalidates the game's choke point difficulty design. Brock can't be a tough take down if there are a bunch of special attackers or pokemon with super effective moves before you get to him.
Raichu can get Surf in the new games. And what? Have you ever heard of Type coverage? They even had that in Gen 1 like letting Dragonite learn Fire moves or Rhydon learn Electric moves. They added Grass, Water, and Fire Types early because they're way too far into the map as is and most Yellow players will end up relying on the starters for their coverage. A lot of the early Pokemon games have this issue for some reason, most of the early routes will just have Bug and Normal and Rock Types.
@dawnsbuneary damn, the fact that it's been longer since that song been out compared to the year it's singing about makes me feel old. Growing old sucks
Removing badge boost from hard mode sounds like a perfect thing to do. I never used it in those games. Or well... i never intended to use it. Moves functioning how they are supposed to. But if you want the jank. It is a staple for gen 1. You can play on easy where you can over level too.
I've been playing pokemon games on and off since Yellow came out as a kid, and I had no idea what a badge boost glitch was until I looked it up just now. I had actually forgotten about the badge boosts in general from back in the day (Been mainly playing Gen 3-5 games past several years or Pogo until I stopped a year ago).
@@budsmokinpandaz pretty sure it doesn't, and pretty sure that a lot of people will just click off for it and that the algorithm REALLY doesn't like that
I always liked sandshrew as a kid, as a pure ground type it had the immunity to electric and resistance to poison without any real downsides. Also the moveset was pretty terrible, but not knowing to spread my elements as a kid it's always have strength, slash(to get around bulking defence since criticals bypassed it), earthquake, and double team(for those times I was facing something faster and would rather dodge than risk being repeatedly hit). It worked OK as a part of a 3 mon team, I'm not sure it's work as well in a smaller or larger team(less coverage is bad, but less exp would be just as bad).
Definitive edition my ass. Clearly even without hard mode enabled the whole game is set up to punish anyone trying to run a full balanced team. Making it stupid hard doesn't make it better. I thought the idea was to make these older games accessible to modern fans with quality of life and bug fixes, not make a pseudo kaizo hack. The sprite updates do look nice though, I'll give ya that.
i think its inevitable that crystal will be the best. gen 2 had more obvious things wrong whereas yellow's issues are too apart of its identity to really change without getting radical. you can't change the lack of counter to sleep for example without inventing abilities or new moves.
I started playing this hack two weeks ago thanks to you. It’s totally epic. Great improvements to the base game while keeping the original feel and vision intact. I haven’t played Gen 1 since the early 2000s so this was a perfect way to revisit my roots.
I don't like the girl option in yellow at all. No it's not because I'm anti-girl, but rather Ash was always meant to have the pikachu, so it just goes against the original story.
Im glad they kept mechanics in, you don't want to restrict play too much. Couple of points I used Onyx in my playthrough, its GOOD! 9th highest base stat total, and a fast stab Earthquake / Rock Slide user. Also Solarbeam is base 180 damage, think the logic was its a bad move but its absolutely terrifying to swap into.
Yeah Hard Mode should remove badge boost glitch. Or they should add Expert mode and that takes out the badge boost glitch. Release the Pikachu really quick.
Hey, I´m currently playing this! It´s been quite a ride so far, the streams have been crazy with moments of me just breaking to a surprise here and there completely messing with me. Definitely my favourite gen1 ROM hack so far!
Love this series of games so far and love that jrose is playing them too . Smith and the people that helped him are clearly awesome and have some respect for the source material. These are the kinda "remakes" I adore. Can't wait to give Yellow a shot after their Crystal version. Hope fan of the new sprites and back art! Incredible!
im also of two minds on the badge boost glitch still being around, on one hand there is what jrose said - it's a staple of the game, and yeah removing it from hardmode would be a nice balance between staple and difficulty, but there is an argument to be made for it not existing at all: this is supposed to be the 'perfect' version (im not sure if the mod author uses that phrasing or just jrose) and if that is the case, removing all glitches/exploits/etc. would, and really should, be a priority.
I just beat it, and had SO much FUN!! it was living my childhood all over again, I could FINALLY FINALLY have a GENGAR! for the elite four! thanks to the modders and developers that made this possible ❤

None of this excuses that Pokémon to this day doesn’t have a regular type of difficulty choice
Rare footage of JRose actually attempting to enjoy playing Pokémon for once 😂
I just played it. I think it is far better yellow. It also great seeing regular trainers use less garbage pokemon. Yellow my first game
I love the little sprite for Grimer in the party-menu, it's adorable \o/
Thank you for showing this version, this is fascinating

OK, the weirdest thing about this video is seeing you in Seafoam. I think that might be a first for the channel.
Its very awesome to see SmithPlays make this Legacy trilogy
I enjoyed your Crystal Legacy video, and this is no exception especially when you're very well versed in Gen 1 and all these solo runs
Can't wait for Emerald Legacy soon
Been watching all the streams thesmithplays has been putting out. Played through Crystal Legacy and on my way through Yellow Legacy. Really cool to see Jrose playing another youtubers creation
Lt. Surge was buffed to be an actual challenge in Yellow Legacy…
Yet I still managed to solo him with Pikachu 😂
Thank you Para-flinch
Goof at 3:50, that sprite is actually based of Green from the Pokemon Adventures manga, highly recommend reading it the later chapters in particular were very ahead of its time.
I hope you play through Emerald Legacy when it finally drops too. These are great videos
the badge boost glitch shouldn't be removed for hard mode, it should be extended to the opponent and the AI reprogrammed to take maximum advantage
After a hard 11hr shift, nothing is better than a jrose upload. Thank you
35:10 there's a bird in my neighborhood we've named Craig. Our Craig is just like this one, in that it also likes to wait for someone to walk by (minding their own business) so it can swoop in and kick the crap out of you.
is it a magpie?
@@markblacket8900 pretty sure it's a Northern Mockingbird, but I wouldn't be surprised if its mother was a magpie.
Congratulations 🎊 YOU GOT CRAIGED
Craig: SURPRISE MOTHAFUCKA
This was so much fun to watch on Twitch! Not as great as Crystal but still excellent.
Two things ive always wanted to see:
1. Gym leaders who refuse to battle you unless you reduce your team size to match theirs.
2. A tournament style battle against randomly generated teams which you must win before challenging the elite 4, and preferably in a stadium setting instead of the back room of a gas station in the mountains
The mullet on Ashette is too wild!!!! Great video JRoss11😂
I can't believe Jrose uploaded on exactly midnight on my birthday omg
Hbd
That's awesome!
Happy birthday bro wish you many more 🎉
Hbd
Happy birthday!!
One of the coolest changes I saw when playing was Flareon learning Growth (AKA Gen 1 Calm Mind). That with badge boost glitch made him unstoppable if I got to set up
So glad the Psychic Flying type beat the champion
One of my favorite rom hacks was called "Ultra Violet," which was a hack for FireRed. You were able to catch or envelope every pokemon from the first 3 generations. Pokemon that would evolve by trade instead evolved by level up. All of the legendary pokemon were catchable. Mew for example was located inside Bills pokemon machine which teleported you to a small island. There were a few hidden tiles throughout the game that would guarantee the next encounter was shiny. There were entire maps that were made from scratch. It was honestly great. Idk if it's still around
Not to be confused with Dark Violet btw
And that's the general issue with hard pokemon games. It all comes down to puzzle encounters where you can waste forever to set up the solution to a problem, or you have to cheese it with something like a badge boost glitch.
Neither is really any more fun than if the ai wasn't acting after you and wasn't setup with all the options and stats
I just beat the yellow legacy postgame, took me about 100 hours and I had a blast. All my favorite nostalgia vibes without the bugs and quality of life problems.
The girl character is Green/Blue (depending on the language) from the pokemon manga.
She was actually planned for the original red and green but was scrapped midway, then she was brought back in the remakes with a new design that is popularly known as "Leaf"
@@DanielPereira-ey9nt Leaf and Green are not the same character. Green appears in the Let's Go remakes with her original "concept art" appearance.
@@gaobot they are the same in practice and are completely interchangeable, she even wears the Fire Red Leaf Green outfit in the manga for a bit
@@DanielPereira-ey9nt You are right, it appears they are the same character in the manga, but not in the games.
They very well could be the same in the games. The Let’s Go games use the retro designs anyway.
I love how the rival had 3 different teams representing the 3 different outcomes from the first couple of battles like originally but his teams also come from different games/manga I believe.
Right before bed. Perfect.
Like crystal. It's a very fun mod to watch. But I'm super excited for the emerald legacy in a few years. That will be legendary
Sandslash didn't give any hecks to any of those Pokemon way above its level.
Damn this game looks amazing! Ty for taking the time to showcase it jrose! Its a nice change of pace when you do these types of videos playing through romhacks, well done keep up the great work :)
25:50 omg I recognize her from somewhere but idk where!!!
You're thinking of Kris, from Crystal version. She was the playable female character.
@@THEREDHOTWRECK Technically yes, but _technically_ technically... her username is very important here
Cannot wait for the Kabutops solo run. Happy to see my favorite Pokémon putting in work!
God bless you, I pray you're well, and keep up the great work!
i'm glad the bulbasaur back sprite was updated in particular, it always looked like a sad frog to me lmao
"when else will I use a grimer?"
Epic foreshadowing is epic
Old Rod not only catches Goldeen, you can also get a Poliwag!
I got oneon my playthrough, and it´s now a really tanky Poliwrath that learnt Ice Punch naturally!
I am the only one wondering who is guarding moltres?
Yeah, I think he forgot to show the Moltres footage, I was wondering where Moltres was the whole video
Just got home from work. New Jrose11 video. Must watch. Plus Yellow was one of my first games from pokemon. Sweet sweet nostalgia.
I just Go to Work. 😄
Yellow was my first pokemon game and I loved it so much. Wish I could play this!
You can :). There are ROMs floating around 😊
@TheRandomGuyTheFarNoGameCat well unfortunately I only have my phone to run roms on and I tried but couldn't get crystal legacy to work so I probably won't be able to get this to work either sadly
@@dennisdunker8764u just need to patch it I think
@DKTN11 I tried :/ I followed the links and directions I just couldn't get it to work.
I'm also pretty noobish when it comes to tech so that doesn't help lmao
I really don't mind quality of life updates. Nintendo/Pokemon Co. Do it all the time, it's why we have like 10,0000 remakes of gen 1. I like this. Can't wait to download it.
Perfect JRose uploads again!
Also he increased Onix's BST
23:22 'this motley crew of Pokémon' has got to be a reference to the Pokémon guide from the 90s, RIGHT?
When did motley crew become classic rock?
@dawnsbuneary damn, the fact that it's been longer since that song been out compared to the year it's singing about makes me feel old. Growing old sucks
Removing badge boost from hard mode sounds like a perfect thing to do. I never used it in those games. Or well... i never intended to use it. Moves functioning how they are supposed to. But if you want the jank. It is a staple for gen 1. You can play on easy where you can over level too.
Sandslash sure had quite a glow up in this narrative.
2 minute long sponsor less than a minute into the video the algorithm is gonna murder you man 😭😭
Does it not like when you fastforward? Lol
@@budsmokinpandaz pretty sure it doesn't, and pretty sure that a lot of people will just click off for it and that the algorithm REALLY doesn't like that
Cubone and Venonat's sprite are the cutest things I've ever seen.
More rom hacks button 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻
🙄 stop crying and go back to vanilla yellow. I beat this game on hard mode with only bug types
Good for you 🙄
i think its inevitable that crystal will be the best. gen 2 had more obvious things wrong whereas yellow's issues are too apart of its identity to really change without getting radical. you can't change the lack of counter to sleep for example without inventing abilities or new moves.
I started playing this hack two weeks ago thanks to you. It’s totally epic. Great improvements to the base game while keeping the original feel and vision intact. I haven’t played Gen 1 since the early 2000s so this was a perfect way to revisit my roots.
Opera GX even has Chat GPT built right in. Thanks for the warning, I’ll stay far, far away from it then!
Opera is a Chinese based browser if I'm not mistaken, it made my phone slower than when trying to use Chrome which also sucks now.

This rom hack looks amazing and I like all the improvements they made to this game
I don't like the girl option in yellow at all. No it's not because I'm anti-girl, but rather Ash was always meant to have the pikachu, so it just goes against the original story.
Grimer and Koffing menu sprites give me life. :D
38:36 “Machamp, Champ of NOTHING.”
"When else am I gonna use a GRIMER?"
How Fast Can You Beat Pokemon Red/Blue with just a Grimer when?
Im glad they kept mechanics in, you don't want to restrict play too much.
Couple of points I used Onyx in my playthrough, its GOOD! 9th highest base stat total, and a fast stab Earthquake / Rock Slide user.
Also Solarbeam is base 180 damage, think the logic was its a bad move but its absolutely terrifying to swap into.
Ive been following the creation of this game for a long time now, so its neat to see other people finally playing it!
Yeah I really feel like they need to remove the badge glitch for hard mode
Yes! I've been waiting for this!
Enjoyed the Crystal Legacy video, so was expecting this too haha
Yeah Hard Mode should remove badge boost glitch. Or they should add Expert mode and that takes out the badge boost glitch. Release the Pikachu really quick.
Yellow was my first video game ever and this ROM has all of the small improvements I wanted when I was a kid, I can't wait to try it.
Yellow version was my first love for a game and yellow legacy brought back that love for me. Such a fun game
Trending at #23, so happy for you and your channel. Great work.
Wow … I’m very impressed by this. I really want to play this and crystal legacy now. Thanks jrose
20:59 sad Grimer noises. Please use my cute slimey boy more, he deserves it.
