I purchased the Drillmate to drill 2 perfectly straight 1/2" diameter holes into the back of a 1" thick floating shelf for the supporting rods; and while it is supposed to be able to locate and hold the center of a drilling surface, I found after testing on some 1" thick scrap that it was a little unstable, would move off center and didn't produce a perfectly centered straight hole. The way I fixed this was to remove 2 of the grommets and screw on 2 blocks cut from a 2x4 (diagonally on 2 corners). This gave me the centering and stability I required, as well as the added benefit of being able to clamp the drill mate to the shelf at these 2 points. I took a picture of it and tried to upload it but was unable to.

I bought one, it is ok. I took the spring off as it cants the chuck/drill bit towards the shaft with the spring as there is a bit of slop in the sleeves that ride up and down the shafts. I removed the two hard plastic sleaves from the chuck carrier and replaced them with a piece of ultra slippery Teflon PTFE 1/16" thick sheet (McMaster Carr part# 8545K13) that I rolled into a cylinder. To cut the strip uses the full height of the hard plastic insert to measure for the width of the strip and marked a line with a sharpie. Cut the strip off with sharp scissors. Then roll the end of the strip around one of the steel shafts(PTFE is soft) and mark the approximate length needed to make a complete cylinder, you will have to trim off tiny amounts of the length to get it to fit perfectly into the holes in the drill chuck carriage(it should be a tight fit), push the piece of PTFE all the way to the bottom, I needed to use the edge of a 3/8" dowel to to get the PTFE piece to bottom out. There is no need to reinstall the two screw they are not necessary as the Teflon fit it tight. All the slop is gone. Reassemble the drill guide and put a thin film of gun oil, 3 in 1 oil, synthetic motor oil, or the like on the steel shafts, it will be silky smooth and it will be an excellent tool.
I would recommend mounting it to a 8" or 10" square base for stability. This is a light duty, hobbyist tool, do not expect to be drilling holes for pegging mortice and tenon joints in huge timbers.

I have one of these in my art studio - it's great. Works well nicely made. Nice video - I learn how to easily drill close to the side of material (it was a simple solution, yet I hadn't thought of it 😂🙈) - thanks for the tip 😊🌺💗

This makes it so much easier to install things such as floating shelves because if it's off by like 1° you end up with a bunch of skewed screws and it'll never be a nice fit. With this thing all you have to do is place it at the right spot and drill without thinking twice. And it's not even expensive, I thought it would be like at least 100 USD.

I've been shopping for a drill press for quite a while...you have to spend upwards of 1k to get one with more than 3" of quill travel. Stuck between powermatic and Jet... This thing definitely has some advantages and can prove to be a very useful tool if you use it appropriately.

    • @natelarge

FYI Powermatic and Jet are the same company. They say Powermatic is better quality. Jet is friendlier on the pocket. Just some food for thought.

Based on your video, I purchased one and tried it yesterday. Being a super amateur, it worked great on my project.
I could see a pro having ideas for improvement but for a product under $40, it was well worth it IMO.
Thanks again for the inspiring tutorial and keep up the great work

there are mixed reviews on amazon for this and other competitor products with compareable price range . many complains about instabilty of bearings and run out which leads to inaccurate results.
Kanzawa drill guide receives postive reviews generally speaking but the 120 bucks price tag makes it an unreasonable choice for DIYers like me
    any helpful comment on this?

I run a print shop and needed to drill holes in hundreds of election posters mounted on Coroplast boards. This made the job a breeze. Paid for it right away. I am going to make a base for it so I can clamp it to a table so it is stable.

An ask here if you don't mind.
I got myself this thing. She could be a skookum choocher because the construction and materials are relatively robust. However, the bit on the top what is intended to be put in the drill chuck seems to be bent at the root, as witnessed by my drill with a nicely centered chuck causing the whole rack thing to weeble-wobble and shake around with each turn.
I'd like to straighten that thing out. How should I approach the problem?

U can put a thing on the bottom and temporarily clamp another thing to the thing on the bottom and that lets you keep a repeatable distance from an edge

I used one of these to drill a hole with a 1 &3/8 bit through a 4x4, but it didn’t come out straight. I am a beginner at this.
I did not use a clamp to hold the wood in place. Is that where I went wrong?

    • @natelarge
      @natelarge  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hard to say without having eyes on the situation. Like you said the guide might have wandered causing the hole to move, or maybe the guide was not set right, lastly it could be a defective guide.
