    I'm shocked how many people in the comments have no experience and are trying to talk trash. The purpose of this tool is not to replace a drill press, it is for holes on tables, mortises on large legs, drilling dog holes, etc.

    • @johnbesharian9965
      @johnbesharian9965 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      LOL! Yep, last dog I drilled holes in didn't appreciate it and almost didn't survive the experience. On a more serious note, an inexpensive 8", or 10" bench top drill press with the head rotated 180º opposite the base could easily drill 90º dog holes in a bench top. It's the angled drilling and portability that makes these types of drilling guides most useful in places a drill press dares not go - or is unusable in.

    Why was a spring not incorporated into the design like other drill guides?

    • @rockler
      @rockler  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Nathan, During testing, we found that it was easier to operate the drill guide without the springs than with them. The springs made it harder to press the bit into the workpiece, increasing the chance of binding or other substandard result. We also found that, because of the smooth action of the carriage, springs weren't really needed to help retract the drill after use. Thanks

    Question- Ive never used a drill guide before. I work in marine construction and we have to drill a pilot hole through 7"-14" thick round pilings with thick drill bits. Sometimes getting enough push is hard to get b/c you might be trying to push a drill in neck deep water and its very difficult to push the drill hard enough for it to catch traction. The problem isn't so much staying on angle, the problem is getting enough push behind the drill. Do these drill guides help you push the drill in anyway or do they just keep your drill at a set angle?

    Why don't the guide shafts have springs?

    • @rockler
      @rockler  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The springs don't really help. They actually make it more difficult to drill down. The core function of this is to guide the drill straight down easily. So why would we want to fight spring resistance while trying to do so? We opted out of the spring, as it is unnecessary and honestly found it a bit of a nuisance. The top cross bar has a thumb screw on the side so that you can easily lock it in place when the drill is retracted.

    Actually not bad compared to the others out there. I would pay $200 for a solid accurate drill press. All that's missing are guide rails for flexible mounting options. People keep saying buy a cheap drill press, try sticking an mft tabletop under a drill press and see how far you get. This has its specific uses that cannot be matched by a drill press.

    What is the max depth that the drill can bore a hole in the work piece? Can it do 4" deep?

    • @rockler
      @rockler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there, the depth you can bore depends on the length of the drill bit you are using. The bottom of the drill guide’s chuck stops roughly 1” above the workpiece. If you have a drill bit that is 6” long, you will be able to bore 4” deep (that is accounting for the part of the bit that will be tightened in the chuck).

    • @rockler
      @rockler  ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on what you are doing. Sometimes you take the workpiece to the tool, so a drill press may be better. Usually for smaller parts. And sometimes you need to take the tool to the workpiece, so our portable drill guide would be the solution. Say you need to drill holes on the bottom of a table for legs to be mounted. You wouldn't be able to reach the hole location with a drill press, or even lift a whole table top on to a drill press. That is where the portable drill guide excels. Also, with it's many features, you can easily drill the sides of boards with the location pins or mount the vice and drill centers of dowels or pen blanks for the lathe. Hope this helps, thanks!

      That's like saying just get a table saw instead of a track saw... It's not that simple! There are things one does better than the other and vice versa. So depends on what type of work you do and how you prefer to work. Overkill for the DIY'er but for the professional who would do a lot of what this would be good at, it can pay for itself...

    Nice product but way overpriced. You can buy a drill press for the cost of this set up.

  • @MAGAMAN
    @MAGAMAN 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    You can buy a drill press for less than that and it's 10 times more useful and accurate.

    • @ZeoCyberG
      @ZeoCyberG 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That would be true of the typical drill guide but this is much more accurate and useful than those. So not a big difference from a drill press other than raw power of the drill motor. But this can be quicker to set up, you can take it with you to a job site and not be limited to the workshop, you can work on any size work piece and won't be limited to just the capacity of the drill press work table, you can still work during a power outage as long as you have batteries for your drill, it can be more convenient for those with smaller shops or no actual shop and has to use an improvised work area that you can't keep any permanently placed power tools, and it will be easier to work on angles and odd positions of the work piece.
      Not for everyone but no tool is, it just depends what type of work you do and how you prefer to work... Cost is high but for professionals time is money and anything that saves time and effort pays for itself over time... So I only wouldn't recommend it for the casual DIY'er...

      Not really a drill press replacement for most people, unless you are very space constrained. This is more of a specialty tool for on-site work or when your workpiece is too large to bring to a drill table, think Drilling a mortise into a table top. I’ve used the cheapo version quite a few times for attaching bases to table tops, they work okay, but I would rather this. Not sure if I will buy it, but I see the value

    • @SpydieFan
      @SpydieFan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a specialty tool, the cheaper models are still available if you don’t want/need the precision. Just the quality drill chuck alone is about a $50 item, it’s high priced but I think it makes sense. Not something I would use often, but I would be happy to have one.

  • @PleasantRanch

    This is an ill-conceived product. It offers no advantages over a drill press. Anyone can easily find a used, or even brand new drill press for far less money. I get that this thing does what it’s meant to do; but why and for whom?

    • @SpydieFan
      @SpydieFan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It’s meant to bring the tool to the work where a drill press would not be appropriate, for example boring a mortise on a large table top, or working on a built it. Nice to have for on site work as well, where a drill press is impractical.

  • @Taylexwow

    From the bottom of the churck to the BOTTOM of the base? Why do we get such pointless measurements in woodworking.....it should be to the TOP of the base because thats where the workpiece is sitting!

    • @SpydieFan

      I’m confused, that measurement is the total travel of the chuck, essentially what is the possible drilling depth. It’s a very important measurement. You can drill an 8” deep hole, good to know.
