7-years later and this morning the dreaded dash light came on, initially YTube vids disconnect battery cables but watched your vid for short cut fix it. Now I need to DIY to see if I get your results👍
Out of all the videos I have watched over the years and recently about how to turn off a check engine light, this is the first one that has shown this method. Great information 😎👍
Dude, you rock. This right here is the difference between your knowledge and wisdom. I'm compiling a list of useful car knowledge, and this is going in it.
It worked for me 2014 ES 350. Had it read at Autozone it was a Gas Gap Code. Checked cap and it was off (kids helped pump gas and didn't screw the cap in). After over 100 miles light didn't reset. Tried the ECU fuse as explained on the video and it worked.
😁I had recently purchased a 2018 Ford Escape that was getting poor mileage because it had been "living" at sea level and it now lives in Denver, CO which is 5400 above sea level. I took your advice, plus I also pulled all other fuses connected with with the engine or transmission. Mileage went from 22.5 to 27.2 immediately. Thanks! Jim in Denver
Thank you I was trying to find the key sequence to reset the ECU in a Subaru for example my 2014 Dodge Avenger if you want to reset the ECU you could just turn the key to the on position and pump the gas 7 times but nobody seemed to know it so this idea is 100x better than disconnecting the battery and pumping the brakes
After replacing fuel pump, maf sensor, map sensor spark plugs ,spark plug wires, catylic converter, throttle body , lower intake gasket, manifold gasket ,vent solenoid, purge canister, and maf sensor for the second time to redo everything po172 and po171 kept comin on till I came to a mechanic that had asked me if I’ve rest the ecm. Come to find out he was gonna charge me 40$ to check it and another 120 to reset it on his scanner which I already paid in the past..This video reminded me of the hassle I went through until I pulled the damn ecm fuses out and disconnected the battery which now has my ecm reset so that it can compensate correctly and now my engine is A1 and no engine light has come on yet….2008 impala flex fuel headache car 🤕……yes I replace everything on that car….always use ac delco or original manufacture not no bull crap brand learned the hard way on that too
Man I'm going through the same thing and going crazy.. I'm about to try this and hopefully it works.. o2 sensor, map sesnor, fuel injector, throttle body, pcv valve all replaced and I'm going to be extremely pissed but also extrememly relieved if this works
😆 I just came back into the house to wait out the 15 mins after joining my positive and negative battery cables together based on another TH-cam video. And then I run across your video.
IF your car has a problem the light is going to come back on again before long, do yourself a favor and buy an inexpensive code scanner (about $40) and you can read all the codes and fix the problem the right way, or if you just want to turn the light off it will do that too without popping the hood
It works like a charm, mechanics can take control over your car and keep your car running bad in order to get more money out of you. The mechanics can keep you coming back for repairs with their scanners and they can use the scanner to keep your car running bad
Simple solution: Buy a $30 scanner and scan your own car before and after going to a mechanic. Also, that mechanic is taking a HUGE risk on their reputation if they are doing this....
@@TeeTafoya87 yes I did buy a scanner pay over a hundred dollar and sixty dollar for a code reader my check engine light comes on after I replace everything myself because the mechanic didn’t know what was wrong switching coils and injectors so what I did I started with the fuel pump and filter and the car runs better but the check engine light comes back on so I replaced cam and crank sensor new plugs new coil new vacuum canister check valve and the other valve new mass air throttle sensor idle control fuel pressure sensor get pcv and every thing on the car and It runs very good and strong better than ever but the check engine light still comes on I cut it off 20 or 30 miles it comes back on so I open up the dashboard and took the bulb out and my 04 mustang GT automatic dark shadow gray is running good I even put a new harmonic balancer on it
Hey, just want to say thank you for this video. It works on my civic with the E-MID blank screen problem. This method is much faster and safer than to unplug the battery.
Clumsy unplugging of batteries can cause short circuits that will fry your alternator.2) Old corroded battery clamps can break. ECU fuse removal is best explained.
Thank you so much my friend. This light on my Instrument panel stays on all the time. I will try having a go at this easy fix. This will save me a lot of money. You are very Helpful my Friend. Jonathan and Audi A3 owner.
Did this work for your A3 and what year is your vehicle? I have an a2 with the EM light on. Want to know if this is worth trying or straight into the garage?
Thank you very very much it worked perfect for my car honda frv. I made it the old school I took the whole plug of the battery left it for 10 min and then pluged it in.. tara! Many thanks again.
When reprogramming a new BCM to disable the Anti theft make sure ALL fuses are installed and working. It is setup to need to communicate with certain parts of the car and without all fuses present (even RDO funny enough) it won't work. This happened to me until I found the info on a forum.
Best method, so much better than taking batt cbl off. My radio has about 40 settings that are lost at battery change etc. On my Ranger I killed the pwr to the PCM memory and drained it by putting a load on it at the fuse box. (an analog meter, then let the needle fall to 0). Still have intermittent flooding at start after replacing fuel injectors. So if anybody has suggestion I'm listening. Other than smelling gas at warm start sometimes it runs great and the trans shift points are smooth as glass now.
_"How about the capacitors on the computer itself?"_ DISCLAIMER... DANGER!!!! - Never, EVER touch a positive and negative cable while EITHER of the cables is still connected to the battery! BOTH cables (positive AND negative) MUST be disconnected from the battery BEFORE they can touch each other. With that said... I eliminated any residual charge from the capacitors by connecting the positive and negative cables (from the car) together with a clamp to hold them together... while COMPLETELY DISCONNECTED from the battery. I left it this way overnight. Next morning, I connected the positive cable and negative cable to their respective (correct) battery terminals. Computer was reset after driving a couple of miles. Check Engine light gone.
Would probably be worthwhile to mention that most import vehicles have more than one ECU or PCM fuse so some vehicles it may not be as simple as just finding Mr ECU and pulling him out
Probably equally important to mention that this would be considered a soft reset in the process of unhooking the battery terminals and then connecting the positive and negative leads of the vehicle would be considered a hard reset of course giving enough time for the capacitors to drain and the control modules to start from scratch would be the most important step
Disconnecting the battery is much easier & while you've got the cables off it's a good time to clean the battery posts. Then reattach the cables your good to go.
Yes, it's important to clean the terminals. But it sucks to have to reset the clock and stations on the radio. So if you know the terminals are ok, then the fuse works nicely.
I have some tips to share as I have experienced this problem for quite sometime. So many way I have tried but the problem was never resolved until lately I got a tip from a good foreman for my bmw. Belief me or not, all what you need to do it change the ignition coil, one set. 4 cylinders car, you need to change all 4 units or if for 6 cylinders car, you need to change 6 unit. Don't just change only 1 unit. All my car problems has been resolved. Very smooth engine, just like new car. No more "engine check" signal came in. Trust me.
I have a2007 bmw 750Li . One day I was coming home from the grocery store. And didn't see it last minute and ran over a like a block of wood from a piece of furniture or something. When that happened it's like all my sensors and everything with the ecu started acting up. It still runs and drives it's just not normal functioning. It's a V8 by the way.
Um you don't just plug the fuse right back in as you have to wait for the residual charge to dissapate, same thing with unhooking the battery terminal.
Did you say you remove pos and neg off battery? Why not just remove pos? I am replacing injectors and i I usually disconnect pos cable for safty reasons for certain jobs like starters, alternator etc..thanks for sharing
To drain ECU, you need to disconnect both and connect with each other for 30 minutes. If you want to disconnect for safety, then you disconnect the negative, NOT positive.
I'm wondering that still can't work. When car isn't running, no ignition on setting or door open, no power is going to ECU. It's dormant, like your desk top computer is shut off. Pulling the fuse with no power present or flowage does nothing. Like turning off your power bar on your off-state desk top. The codes remaining are like ROM bubble memory and don't erase. The way to do it is to open your door, key to ignition on, then pull the fuse which drains the electricity flow. Resetting fuse a minute later reboots the computer. Otherwise, everytime you turn off your car, close and lock the door, computer will always be turned off and reboot every time. What's missing here?
If there’s a fault that triggers the engine management light to come and you don’t fix the fault and knock the eml off it will still come back on until fault is fixed🤔🤔

Mahavir Bhakta of course but, he failed to mention that. It would’ve been better put to just show how to remove the light. Neither way resolves anything. LOL
@@bryanmartinez7531 I agree. But sometimes you resolve the issue causing the light but because the code is stored in the ecu the light remains. i`m currently getting this, i`m suspecting its a faulty ecu, so going to reset it by removing the fuse and reconnecting the obdII. i will post back the result.
came back; ended up taking the throttle body off to clean it again, changed spark plugs, changed from oil to regular air filter and then did an idle relearn: turned key to on position twice, then started car, put emergency brake on, put foot on brakes, and kept car in drive for a min or two. So far so good.
If you programmed ECU to tuned, it won't go to manufacture because it was overwritten. You need to program again to stock. This method only resets to the last programmed
Okay. So I uploaded 1 of meant to be 6 files because I was trying to update the system but only 1 of the files got uploaded and is playing about with the pedals and the gearbox making them stiffer so how do I get rid of that file

How do i know which one is the right fuse there is no indication on the fuse box
cleaned the mass airflow sensor & throttle body, but still got hesitation when accelerating from stop.
This fixed it.
came back; ended up taking the throttle body off to clean it again, changed spark plugs, changed from oil to regular air filter and then did an idle relearn: turned key to on position twice, then started car, put emergency brake on, put foot on brakes, and kept car in drive for a min or two. So far so good.
@@1111comment thanks I’ll try this!
@@1111comment did it fix it?
You are a life saver! Thank you!
Nicely explained
Great advice thank-you.
Would this also help in resetting ecu back to stock from tuned(like superchips flashpaq)?
If you programmed ECU to tuned, it won't go to manufacture because it was overwritten. You need to program again to stock. This method only resets to the last programmed
Okay. So I uploaded 1 of meant to be 6 files because I was trying to update the system but only 1 of the files got uploaded and is playing about with the pedals and the gearbox making them stiffer so how do I get rid of that file
Would this work on older cars I have a 99 Lexus
Hi there quick question, will this work on VW MK7? The car just won't start diagnostics say "J623 ECU needs replacement" before I pay an arm & leg will your method work on yhe car?
Try it, if it won't work, then you will have to replace
My check engine light is not coming on. The little light on the dashboard that's a car with a lock on it is on. A locksmith told me there was some problem with my ECU most likely. Does anyone know if this trick would help?
By doing that, will the light come back on in the future?
Yes, it does not correct the problem.
How about diesel engine? Or matic car..?
Having many ECUs which one should I pull? I have ECU 1,2,3..
all
