  • Each year, BYU Religious Education and the Religious Studies Center sponsor the annual BYU Easter Conference. A General Authority emeritus or former Church leader is invited to give the keynote address. Accompanying the keynote speaker are other teachers, educators, scholars, authors, speakers, historians, or experts on Christ. All speakers talk about the Savior, his life, his mission, his Atonement, and his influence in our lives today. Watching the BYU Easter Conference is an ideal way to prepare to celebrate the Easter season.
The 2022 keynote speaker is Virginia Pearce Cowley, author and former member of the Young Women General Presidency. Additional speakers are John Hilton III, associate professor of ancient scripture at BYU, and Jan Martin, assistant professor of ancient scripture at BYU.
In this talk, John Hilton III references an Ensign College Devotional called “The Symbol of the Cross: A Bridge, Not A Barrier.” You can access this talk at • John Hilton III: The S... .
The Religious Studies Center and BYU Studies have published several articles by Professor Hilton related to Christ’s Crucifixion. These are freely available atjohnhiltoniii.com/crucifixion/.

Missionaries seems to have been taught in days gone by that it was all about the Atonement. I think this has been rectified. I could not think about one without the other. So much love and pain on our behalf in both of these. Thankfully he rose again.

Haha! I was talking about this subject to my brother this week! Sometimes we forget and need to refresh our thoughts and focus on learning more! Loved this. It was like he heard our conversation and is talking on it! Excellent!

Sister Pierce - oh how much I see your mother’s and father’s influence in you. Oh how I love them and you! Thank you for your sweet spirit and the uplift of your words which are so much a reflection of your parents’ spirits and words. Thank you for your raw spirit and open vulnerability. Thank you for the rays of sunshine you bring about with your words. Thank you. May you be blessed forever. 🙏🏼😌💞

The last talk (President Kimballs daughter ) inspired me ! Her mention many sudden deaths among her peers was tragic , though . Seventy-seven doesnt seem like enough longevity especially for those that keep the Word of Wisdom and other LDS practices. President Nelson was born in 1924 !

Wonderful talks. Thank you. Perhaps our common understanding of Gethsemane as the focal point of the atonement comes from D&C 19:16 For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for ALL....18 WHICH SUFFERING caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to BLEED AT EVERY PORE, and to suffer both body and spirit-and would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink...." Emphasis (CAPS) mine. All that seems to have transpired in Gethsemane, not Golgotha. Thoughts please??? My current view is that these are not separate, discrete events; but rather, a single integrated atonement/crucifixion/death/resurrection event. All of it was necessary to open the path for us to reconcile to God.

We are currently working on adapting our videos into transcript form. It's not ready quite yet, but when they become available they can be found at rsc.byu.edu/media.

I'm pretty sure we empathize Gethsemane over Calvary because other humans have been crucified, but only One took upon Himself the Burdens and sins of mankind as Christ did causing blood to seep from every pore without Him going unconscious or dying
