Why Won't This Rolex Datejust Tick?

  • Today we have José's 1986 Rolex Datejust on the bench and what a stunner this watch is! It is however also a non-runner, although the handset and date quick-set works. Let's find out what the problem is and see if we can fix it!
The Datejust is an iconic model, virtually unchanged in design since its introduction in 1945. While there have been some variance in the sizes of the different Datejust models, the basic design has stayed the same and for good reason. It is a watch pretty much the whole world recognizes as a Rolex.
Join Stian for a full service and repair of this beautiful watch as we discuss cold winter days in Norway and see if the fish is good or bad!

Your car pushing story brought back one that happened to me. A young lady had pulled up to a local store. When she got ready to leave, her car would not start. I offered to push it backwards to get it running. I explained to her what she needed to do. But I forgot to tell her to put the car in reverse. I got it rolling back, and she released the clutch and put her foot on the throttle. I ended up on the windshield, but we got her car running. 😊

Once I moved to slightly warmer parts of the country, I spent quite a lot of money reimbursing car rental companies for their extension cords when I unthinkingly drove away without unplugging first! 🇨🇦💕

Thank you for this, dear Stian: 👍👌👏! Seeing that Rolex produces 1'000'000 watches a year - though people seem to have to queue to get one (🤪?) - you have your work cut out for you for the next decades, particularly since Rolex always make a hash out of their costly "revisions". So Rolex it is and will be for the foreseeable future. What works in you favor is that you could read out a telephone book and still sound captivating.

Seconds pinion is bend? The outside of the tube is touching the cannon pinion slightly, so when setting the hands back and forth, the seconds hand jumps a bit with the other hands? Or cannon pinion too tight and when setting the hands it doesn’t slip enough and transfers power to the train side?

Thanks for another enjoyable video, Stian.
A few thoughts regarding demagnetising watches during service - I’ve noticed you always show demagnetising the movement after reassembly, and this is certainly enough in terms of the services watch being free of magnetism and the issues associated with it.
I’ve noticed other TH-cam watchmaking channels do the same thing, if they show demagnetising at all.
I was always taught to demagnetise both before and after servicing the movement.
I’m not sure it would make much difference very often, but the thought behind it is that if the watch is significantly magnetised, any small ferrous metal particles, caused by wear and tear will adhere to magnetised areas of the movement. Such particles aren’t that uncommon in vintage pieces that have been used without a recent service.
Magnetism could retain such tiny fragments in place all the way through cleaning and reassembly.
You then demagnetise the watch after reassembly, potentially releasing these metal particles into the freshly cleaned and serviced movement.
This shouldn’t happen if you demagnetise before disassembly and cleaning, and do it once again after reassembly in case any parts became magnetised during the service due to magnetised tools etc.
Perhaps this is often overkill, but it can’t hurt to demagnetise twice to prevent the above from ever being a problem.

    • @VintageWatchServices
      @VintageWatchServices  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Thanks for your comment! I do indeed demagnetise a watch if it runs very erratically and it shows magnetisation on my tester.

One thing you can say for Rolex is the movements are just well designed. They aren't decorated or anything, but the tolerances and fit is top tier. They use more jewels than most as well, but that keeps the reliability up. I think a lot of the sports models are way overpriced, but a nice Datejust like this totally obtainable at MSRP.

What a funny drawing by your daughter Stian, I didn't see it coming when she opened the paper. I do have a question Stian that I don't think I've asked you. How long have you been a watch maker? Your videos display your skill and craftsmanship, but I never knew how much noise the watch case and bezel make while dropping them into the liquid in preparation for the ultra sound. I hope you and yours are healthy and at peace and wish you all a very Happy Easter. Cheers from this old, retired coot living the dream in Tennessee.

5 1/2 years ago I purchased a 16030 when I took the case back off and remove the gasket there was so much pitting on the case back and on the case where the gasket was I had to get a used case so that it would seal, what would cause such horrible pitting behind the bracelet under the bezel and where the gasket goes I thought stainless steel was pretty robust the date of the watch was 84 or 85 I believe.

That focus is unfortunately why I haven't been working on watches lately. If I start, I need to block out at least 4 hours. Partly because I don't have a permanent workbench, and deciding to work on watches means a certain amount of setup and then putting stuff away, but also because at least that much time will go by without my noticing. And that's very hard to do, the way life is right now.

I'm sure that endless advertising helps out a lot too because Rolex makes some of the most boring watches on the planet and in order to sell them the masses must be reminded daily. Porsche on the other and does manage to create something exciting with each new model based on a familiar shape. Only redeeming fact about Rolex that they also produce other wat h models that look nothing like a Rolex.

I'm pretty sure Jubilee is not of English origin, but Biblical term.

I notice you put the movement on the timegrapher, before you add the date wheel etc. Does the addition of the date wheel and it's associated items, affect the timegrapher reading at all?

No, it shouldn't have any significant impact if there are no issues with the date parts.
